    Hey everyone!
Initially, I had trouble getting the outro solo down. I spent so much time tabbing the song and creating the backing track that I neglected actually practicing. When I started playing the solo, my fingertips were too soft to hold the bends for any more than a couple of measures. To toughen my fingertips again, I practiced bending on an Acoustic guitar with 13 gauge strings. SRV would approve I'm sure. When I returned to playing this solo, it was much easier! Lesson learned and note to self - keep practicing as you are tabbing.
I have double tracked the lead guitars in this to give the classic sound. The only difference is that I didn't stray from the guitar that I heard in the right speaker from listening to the recording. So I made it one tab and decided not to overcomplicate things.
Really enjoyed working on this song and I hope you have fun learning it!

I think what people forget about this song when performing it live is that the greatness of the solo depends upon the tightness of all the other instruments. The drums have got a real job to do, not just pace wise but keeping the tempo of everyone in line, the bass has got to be flying about too, I mean its an insane bass line, and the keys and other guitarists have to be so on point. It's the wall of sound created by all of it together that makes the solo truly explode.

Absolutely fantastic as always...tone and chops alike! I especially liked that "love tap" at 6:33 and didn't even break stride...definitely a pro move there :) And btw, how many people go to the extra effort of green-screening their guitar to get the accurate color/wood tone? That's just crazy and shows the effort you put in to the production of these videos. Thanks for all your wonderful contributions, especially this masterpiece!

    If I leave here tomorrow
    Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
    Lord knows, I can't change
Bye-bye, baby, it's been sweet love, yeah, yeah
Though this feelin' I can't change
Please don't take it so badly
'Cause Lord knows, I'm to blame
If I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
    Lord knows, I can't change
Lord help me, I can't change
    Lord, I can't change
Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah

This was note for note perfection. Lots of players think this song is easy because it is sort of a collection of basic blues riffs but the timing is what makes it difficult. Getting the bends and double stops etc with the right speed down to hit all the proper accents and moments that give the solo its charm is what makes it hard.

Learned your version of all along the watchtower-which is absolutely spot on to jimi’s original recording. The solos are cool but the rhythm transcriptions are where the real learning happened for me. Then, i Did your little wing-which i knew sorta-now i know im playing it the way jimi did including the incredible rhythm parts which i never bothered to learn and, again, that,s where my playing really improved. Relearning some country stuff right now from jason loughlin’s truefire course called country connections-highly recco it-then, i’ll come back to this freebird transcription…the solos are basically textbook uptempo rock lead playing and something i’ve always wanted to learn. And your transcriptions are the absolute best on the ‘tube. I wish you’d include the standard notation too cuz it’s cool to use great tabs and notation together! But dude- i love your tabs and seeing you execute the stuff so cleanly and in perfect time is really inspiring. 🙏👊👍

This song which they used to dedicate to Duane Allman in their live shows is strangely seductive, but damn good.
You get used to the sense of melancholy that's conjured up by the first half, but when the speed just shoots up to about 137 and basically remains at a similar speed for the duration of it, it grabs you by the balls. Going purely by the tabs: this solo has too many bends to possibly count, is completely free of heavy metal histrionics, but it's pretty damn awesome! You done a first class job in capturing it pretty much as Gary Rossington did... hats off to you Sir. Excellent job! 🤘🎸🎸🔊🔊🥁🥁😎👍

  • @slyfor2

Awesome cover, big props getting that Gary sound and using an SG, his signature for the slide parts. I read a few times that Gary got that perfect slide sound that sounded almost like a lap steel by placing a nail between the strings and saddles on his bridge to raise the action just enough to avoid the frets while sliding but still leave the action playable.
