    I forgot to mention that this game is 2 players as well, but the experience is terrible. The screen jumps to the movement of both players and it becomes too jarring to look at after a few stages. You’re pretty much always playing catch-up with whomever is in front. Stick with the single player experience

    • @la8208
      @la8208 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It’s 2 player is WAY better than the first one though. The first one, player 2 could literally fall off the screen. So unless player 2 kept up with player 1, player 2 would get lost.

    This game IS awesome. A bunch of my family members played this game, too, and we figured out which characters were best for each stage. We found Gambit was best for the falling boulders level due to his upward attack for the boss and aptitude for taking out those jumping hunchbacks. He was also good for inside the pyramid 'cause those crafty hunchbacks can be annoying.
    Wolverine was essential to beat the last "levels" because of how long and difficult they are. Dat regen is the only thing that could get us past that pretty Hellish zone. And we used Cyclops for the final bosses because he was good for killing the giant scorpion and just blasting all the clones from a distance.
    A challenging game for sure, but not insurmountable. I beat it when I was a kid, afterall. And when we got to our last life, we'd have player 2 join, so when player 1 dies, you still can continue playing with player 2 and 8(or was it 16?) more lives.
    And we did this all without the internet, haha. Ah, simpler (better) times...

    • @VicariouslyRetro
      @VicariouslyRetro  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Nice! Yea Wolverine was always my go-to for the falling boulder stage. And yes, cyclops and gambit were pretty much very similar with their long range attacks, with cyclops having a much faster mutant attack but weaker punch action vs Gambit’s bo staff. But that’s what I loved about this game… the fact that it has such high replayability where you can use different mutants for a higher challenge.
      Beast was my go-to for the scorpion.
      Hahaha yes! I forgot about that. Adding a second player when you’re about to die. Classic. Simpler times indeed

      Having Sega Channel as a kid was awesome! I have so many fond memories of playing great Genesis games like this that I wouldn't have played nearly as much if only renting from the video store.
      Some of my friends had Genesis too and owned copies of certain games i could borrow, but having Sega Channel gave my family access to way more games + titles that were often rented out at the video store like Vector Man, and stuff i later learned didn't even get a physical release in North America. Like the squirrel game, Mr. Nutz, which my parents absolutely loved playing 'cause it was a platformer that wasn't too difficult or complicated for them to play lol. It was good for the whole family, 'cause there was always something one of us wanted to play, all these different genres of games, separate sections for "family games" or games aimed at even younger kids my youngest cousins could enjoy when they were over

    @francescosmith7859 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Yep! This is an absolute gem. I had the first XMen on the Genesis as a kid and thought it was awesome. It is not. I can still enjoy it and it's fun just getting to play as the XMen and the story is good but the characters are so weak (though it's still a million times better than XMen on the NES). Clone Wars makes you feel so powerful and is just an outstanding game. I do wish they had a password system but I can use save states these days so no biggie.
    I still need to play Clone Wars more. Too often I just play everything as Wolverine and need to get better at using the other mutants (and when I unlock Magneto I need to NOT use him so often though that's an outstanding trick to use him when fighting Apocalypse)
    I know other people think XMen Mutant Apocalypse on the SNES is the superior 16 bit XMen game but I disagree. It's pretty good but the characters mostly feel so clunky in that game and I can't stand inputing Street Fighter style commands for the special moves. I'm trying to fight 6 guys and miss my haduken fireball command with Cyclops so now I'm swamped and screwed.

    • @VicariouslyRetro
      @VicariouslyRetro  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yup haha. I thought the first one was good too but looking back, it’s so subpar. The NES one is so bad haha. Like completely broken.
      Actually you don’t need a password system. There’s a level skip code. Pause the game. Press Left + C, Up, Up, Left, Down, Down, Right, C. If done correctly, you will hear a laser blast. Unpause the game, then pause it again. Hold Right + C to skip the level. Hold Left + C to change characters. This is great because you can start at any level with nine lives.
      Def give this game another shot, bro, it’s one of my favorites of all-time!
      And yes, mutant apocalypse is an “ok” game to me. Clone Wars blows it out of the water, no questions ask

    Ohyeah, this game was FANTASTIC. Yeah, it's hard as hell, but that makes beating this game properly after years and years of enjoying this great game through all its replayable, fun bits over and over again that much more rewarding in addition to just how much fun that is to do regardless of whether you beat the game or not.
    This game knew it was fundamentally a game, and that it was difficult. It knew you weren't going to beat it on its first few tries, so it made the levels that come before the last point you died fun to replay--blazing through the sentinel level as Wolverinne, for example.
    The whole thing is packed with killer content--music, sound design, graphics, etc--I can't think of a better X-Men game than this to this day.

    Great review! Great game! A little bit too hard like that ridiculous stage we keep falling down into the water that’s just plain ridiculous and the water keeps rising? There’s like no way you’re being stay without using cheat codes in my opinion or a game, pro or something I’ll let you know which character to pick! Magneto is also the best character for the free falling segments because he can fly and avoiding laser beams. The kids who had a super Nintendo had just as much fun if not a little bit more fun with you at the apocalypse in my opinion! I also really really like the ending from you and apocalypse. The music is so chill.
    It was a great time to be alive in the shed got sonic two or another kid got donkey Kong country, They both had so much fun. There really wasn’t a clear winner in my opinion.

    • @VicariouslyRetro
      @VicariouslyRetro  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! Haha I swear to God, I did not use cheat codes for the gameplay footage. I’ve been playing this game since I was 10 years old. I am aware of the cheat codes though and the only one that’s really useful in my opinion is the stage skip. It’s pretty much like a password system where you can start off on any level instead of the beginning. The invincibility code is kind of stupid because it defeats the purpose of playing a video game. I was never a fan of those type of codes.
      I’ll have to try that level out with Magneto, thanks!
      And yes, I agree, there was no clear cut winner because each console had amazing games of their own. I do like mutant apocalypse, but I must say I like Clone Wars better.

(thank me later!) this crap has to stop about Clone wars!!! it was a SLIGHT upgrade to the original Sega Xmen release which both are IMPOSSIBLE to beat without cheats, etc, the stages are hard to navigate, and the villain selection on this one pales to comparison to the first game (which actually sucks BUT offers you more although unplayable xmen as support characters.)

    My favorites were Gambit and Nightcrawler. The former has cool looks, and the latter can climb on almost every walls.
    The problem is, some level require some specific charas to finish. Like the Beast was used to fight a caped boss who could destroy the entire floor or else I had to fight him from walls instead.
    Still on walls level, I had to pick Nightcrawler to travel through safely to the end of level as there was some guy who flew on the background who could kill me with just one or two shots.
    Fighting Apocalypse boss, I had to use Magneto to fly as he's the only char who could deal damage safely.
    The Minotaur boss was the most annoying one because he just charged on me regardless any posts I landed so I had to use Gambit to beat him from below.

    OK, I’ve already seen all your replies to the mutant Apocalypse fans. I appreciate that you do like both games. It’s really strange. The similarities these games have. Both feature apocalypse as the main villain. And the sentinel factories on both games favor wolverine as their champion. I heard you mention clone wars was faster paced.. that’s true in the fact that with Apocalypse I guess I understand that the screen literally scrolls slower and kind of goes and stops until you defeat all the enemies. But if you’re playing on hard it dumps enemies on you. And it makes for some insane beat downs. Also I have to say that the factor that tips the scales for me is the moves list on the playable mutants, they are executed in streetfighter type button combos and wolverine has uppercuts, straight slashes, a multi hit rapid combo and a brutal downward claw swipe. Linked with his ability to climb walls with his claws and swoop down on unsuspecting bad guys three claws to their forehead. I just can’t see giving gold to any other X-Men game in the 2-D category. But never really aligned as strictly Sega or Nintendo so that probably figures into it a bit.

    • @VicariouslyRetro
      @VicariouslyRetro  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea I totally understand you liking mutant apocalypse better. It’s a strategic, slower paced beat ‘em up platformer vs Clone Wars, which is a faster paced platformer with run n gun elements. Kinda different games, really. In fairness, I didn’t grow up with a SNES so I have more nostalgia for Clone Wars. But I always try to put that away when playing games today. Keep an open mind. With that said, they’re both awesome games. It’s one of those scenarios where at the time, kids argued which version was better but now that we’re older, it’s awesome that we have two different completely different games to enjoy. You don’t get that anymore with the PS5 vs Xbox.

    It really is interesting how much of a difference using proper wired controllers on these old games makes. I honestly don't think modern gamers realise the sacrifice we're making in order to play everything wireless these days. I mean, it's not a huge difference to the point that playing all games these days feels like unresponsive crap or anything like that, but there is a very real difference, which I think is especially evident when playing old-school style 2D games that often ask more of a players reflexes and more precision. Definitely a thing.
    PS. Your enthusiasm over this game makes me wish there was a SNES version now. I mean, Mutant Apocalypse on SNES looks nicer for the most part imo, but the gameplay here looks like it might be more fast-paced and fun. So, yeah, a SNES version could have been very cool.

    • @VicariouslyRetro

And like you said, it’s not a big deal for a lot of games, but there are a decent amount of 2d games that put way more weight on your reflexes and precision.

      I havent started with Genesis yet but this game is top of the list. Any other exclusives or games that are better on Genesis that you would recommend?

    I enjoyed the game up till you beat Apocalypse. After that the levels just start getting way too long and huge. You basically have use Wolverine to survive because you need a character who climbs, and he heals to last thru these lengthy stages. If you play with two players, both of you need pick characters that can climb walls so Nightcrawler is the next best pick. He does move faster. It's beatable, but I find the end areas just over stay their welcome and are far less fun than the first half of the game.

      Yea the last two levels are a doozy. Took me a long time to beat them. I was never a fan of the two-player mode

    I actually enjoyed Spider-Man and X-Men on Sega The game wasn’t easy but it was fun and the music was so good.

    Mutant Apocalypse on SNES is better.
    I would say I slightly prefer the graphics for this Sega game, but most of the rest is better.

      Ahhh I’m going to have to disagree. I’m not saying Mutant Apocalypse is a bad game, but I enjoyed this game much more

    Spider-Man and X-Men wasn't that bad, it doesn't hold a candle to X-Men 2 but it's one of the better Marvel games on the Genesis. The music was kind of a bop in it too.

      Haha yea, it’s not THAT bad, I agree. It’s just way worse than x-men 2

    This game was by far the best Xmen game for the 16bit consoles
