    This was great - I think the follow-on might be a conversation about how you stay connected while you’re on the road.
    I know your previous build used WiFi, cell hot spots & boosters to accomplish that. What’s the new build going to have? 😊

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lucas! Glad you enjoyed it! That's a really good question and one we'll probably answer closer to the van being finished. As of now we're planning on having a similar setup in this new van: Verizon cell phones + hotspot and maybe another cell booster (we haven't decided on this one yet). Stay tuned! 🤓

    • @lily2243
      @lily2243 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisandsara Agreeing with Lucas. You all provide the most clear content and advice out there. Thanks! I've been deciding between adding a line on Verizon for extra hot spot data, or having one Verizon and one AT&T phone. Living in and working from the van -- teaching online and other web-based work for research and writing. How well boosters work is pretty confusing.

    I’ve been a digital nomad for 3 years and I can attest to the fact that it’s hard and exhausting to have so many people around you completely misunderstand our lifestyle. To a certain extent, it’s because it’s hard to imagine, but there is also a bit of trying to find excuses why they couldn’t do it. And it’s hard to realize the value of having a community of people with a similar lifestyle to yours until yours becomes so original.

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very well said. That's exactly what we've experienced, too. One of the good things that's come out of 2020 is lots of people are recognizing the potential of work + travel.

      I agree with Sebastien. I have worked remotely for 25 of the last 30 years, and am just going to start working from a van while traveling, but most people in the van community are more of the gig worker type and don't have full time W2 jobs. A lot of it is in the evening, at night or early morning, so you can still have your days free to travel & have fun! *You just have to do the minimum amount of hours per week(which is usually 12-18hrs)

    Everyone has their own priorities in life, I'm the 'work to live' person. I, might, have been able to climb further up the corporate ladder but I would not trade in the effort I would have had to put in for the many adventures I have had in life, such as walking across Spain, going across the Atlantic on a boat, living in five different countries. Then again I have a friend who doesn't like travelling, loves their job and would hate not to 'live to work'.
    Both of you having slightly different attitudes to the 'work to live' v 'live to work', makes you a good team.

    Hi Sara and Christ, love you guys❤️ Can you talk about the set up of working in the van? Internet, computer, sitting for two etc. We are both laptop warriors. Solid internet is a must have on the road.

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Chloe! That's a really great question, one which we'll probably answer in more depth here soon either in a video or a blogpost. For internet we've worked by 1) using public internet as often as possible and 2) using using our Verizon hotspots. We have data hotspots on our Verizon phones but also on an external hotspot by Verizon (we have the Jetpack). Data can get pricey and can go really fast if you're doing heavy internet work. We try to save all of our uploading and downloading to do on public wifi and save our hotspots for browsing and simple internet tasks.
      We originally had our iMacs in our van on the road with us but we ended up buying newer and faster laptops which allowed us to remove those from the van. We actually really enjoyed having our full office setup with the iMacs but laptops work fine when we're just traveling for weeks or months at a time. Now we both use Macbook Pros which we love.
      Our seating situation in our first van was a two person booth, and this time around it'll be a similar setup. :)

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kay, great question! So we definitely still pay taxes. We were Georgia residents and had a Georgia business license last year, this year we're in Tennessee so we had to transfer our business and all that good stuff. We get taxed based on where we live most of the year. To keep things legal we use Bench so we're sure we're all set up and our taxes are done appropriately. It can get confusing being self employed and traveling a lot. If you'd like, you can checkout Bench here: bench.grsm.io/chrispochiba9259

    I recently retired (2.0) from teaching as a special educator. I'd love to start working on creating video lessons to support self-contained classrooms in the areas of history and social skills (neither of which is something most special educators manage well) because I love that content. Not sure if you tube is the way to go, or if there's another venue that would work better. Any ideas?

    • @LorraineinPNW
      @LorraineinPNW 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was glancing at the comments and saw yours and thought that I'd comment. I'm a middle school resource room teacher who has been working 100% distance learning since March 2020. Last year, I took one year to teach Primary Sp-Ed. I will say, that as a Primary teacher, I needed resources with answer keys and instructional videos (both for me and my students). Most Sped teachers have to find resources to fit their students individual needs. An area that I've had to "patch together" is Study Skills (organization goals). It would have been nice to have research-based materials already created WITH teaching videos (both teaching the teacher and for students to watch). Everything created should have paper and digital formats (Google apps since most districts use them). For elementary kiddos, I see a huge need for Social & Emotional lessons. You could sell on Teachers Pay Teachers. I'd have spent some good $ to have everything together in one package!

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love that y'all found each other's comments! You definitely have my brain thinking about ways this could be most effective for teachers and students. I don't have experience teaching so I'm not too familiar with Teachers Pay Teachers, but the perk of TH-cam is that it's widely available and accessible to all. From y'alls comments it sounds like many educators are looking for videos to patch together holes in curriculum and aid in what content already exists, which would make TH-cam a great place to host your content. That way people could pick and choose which videos they need for their students.
      I love Lorraine's idea of providing digital content but also hardcopies (paper handouts) for students, too. A simple website using a platform like Squarespace could be an easy way to direct people to your paper products. You could even provide the videos for free on TH-cam but then supplement your time but selling the paper products so that you're making a bit of money for your time and knowledge.
      A special education TH-cam channel could do really well! It usually takes a bit of time to work on growing a channel enough to make money on ads there, but it's definitely doable. Having a very niche topic (like special education) would be very searchable and helpful to so many!
      As you can probably tell, we LOVE thinking creatively about this kind of stuff. Please feel free to reach out via e-mail if you ever want to bounce ideas off or have any questions. :)

      Hey Sarah! We actually didn't share any info about health insurance in this video past saying we pay for it out of pocket. We've tried a few different insurance options in the past thought: short term health insurance, medical share programs, and full blown health insurance. Each has their pros and cons.
      Short term health insurance: flexible, much less inexpensive than regular plans, and can be joined/dropped whenever.
      Medical share programs: less expensive and comprehensive coverage. It doesn't cover maintenance type issues (annual physicals, check ups, etc.) but rather things that are issues/problems (broken arms, illness, treatments, etc.).
      Regular health insurance: Much more expensive and has annual enrollment. If you have lots of health issues, this might be the route to go.
      Currently we're on a medical share program and it's worked well for us. We liked the short term care but the downfall of it for us was that IF I (Sara) were to become pregnant, it wouldn't cover that (ouch). We'd recommend Dave Ramsey's insurance help for picking a program. That's what we did this year when we switched to a new medical share program. They took into account that we were self employed, healthy, but still wanted coverage for maternity care JUST in case. Everyone is different in what they need covered so talked to an insurance advisor would probably be your best bet.
      I know this was long, but I hope it helps! :)

    What do you picture yourselves doing five or ten years from now?

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh goodness-- that's definitely something we've thought about but considering our 5 year plans never end up looking the way we expect we try not to think about it too much. lol We'd love to still be traveling and making videos. Maybe even live abroad for a stint?
      We have a dream of owning land in Montana, Idaho, or Washington one day where we can invite people in. Almost like a retreat center for building community. We'd love it to be a place where we lead backpacking trips, workshops, etc. where the ultimate goal is that people are 1) resting up and getting inspired away from their everyday lives that have become exhausting, and 2) meet others who are both like them as well as those who might be different. Community is something we're really passionate about and we'd love to have a place that we can help people grow their passions while connecting with others.
      .... but who knows! :)

    Where do you find vans listed on the internet like yours that you sold in one of your episodes? Thanks for your help with this.

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Chris! Great question, If you're looking for one that's already converted, check out RVtrader.com and Vanlifetrader.com . If you're looking for a cargo van to convert yourself, Cars.com and Autotrader.com are a great place to start looking. Our new van wasn't even listed online but when we called the dealer about a different van, they mentioned they had this one in stock and it was a better fit for our needs. Lesson learned: if you're buying new, just call the dealer and see what options they have!

      Hey Mazaiah! Good to hear from you. :) You're absolutely right, I was. In January 2019 I started a coding course but it ended up being a disaster. While I loved the idea of learning to code, the instructor I had never reviewed my work before the deadlines and I ended up getting a full refund for the course. I had planned to use www.freecodecamp.org/ to learn a little bit more, but as Let's Be Us has grown it's fallen by the wayside unfortunately. I'd still love to get back to trying to learn one day soon!

    Video Idea: How much money we make.

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, that's a hard question. We're pretty transparent about how much our van stuff costs and how people can budget for this lifestyle too, but I'm not sure we'll provide numbers on how much we make just because much of our income info wouldn't really help our audience. We're always happy to help by answering any questions though! We just like to keep numbers a little more private because what's a lot or a little money varies pretty greatly culture to culture so we find that it's more important to highlight smart budgeting practices and skills more than money numbers to help others. :)

    Wow...you guys left out [didn't mention] the 3 greatest sources of digital work...!!!! Why? Are you protecting your work sources due to reluctance of creating competition? It is universally known among digital nomads that these 3 work sources [unmentioned] are far and away more valuable than what you have mentioned here....Anyway, due to this issue, I am grading this video as a "fail".
    HINT: Fi***r and U****K are two of the 3 sources that you left out. They are beyond huge!

      Hey Robert, We prefaced this video by saying that it’s our experience. We’re big believers in community over completion and strongly encourage you to share (we even asked in the video) about your experiences in the comment section. If you think you have resources that would be valuable to the digital nomad community, we’d love to have you share the names without the ***. We only shared info based on how we’ve gotten jobs in the past, but we’re always open to learning new ways to find work! ☺️
