I know, Ford still got a lot of input in there, like they still do on the Lion (TD-3.0L V6) they both developed and Land Rover uses on some of their SUV's and crossovers.
this is my range! the bill isn’t close to 5k is much under and they’re doing lots of other things not talked about in the video, some custom things i requested. One of the most expensive bits is the parts not necessarily the labor, that little battery since it’s completely out of stock almost everywhere is 500 alone from resellers. supply and demand i guess. but it’s in good condition cause i meticulously chose one that was a one owner, owned by someone very wealthy from new york city who kept extensive upkeep on the service records, and had lower mileage on it. i’ve thrown 18k of my own miles on it and it’s been a joy to own. sure it’s not as cheap to run as a honda civic, but if your concern is money then you shouldn’t be looking at a range at all. this is my second sport i’ve owned, i take it off roading, camping, and on long haul drives and it’s one of the most comfortable and fun suvs i’ve ever owned. plus a GREAT stereo… once that pesky center channel speaker gets fixed 🤣. Thanks wizard, mike, and daniel for looking after her!
Not bad! I actually like range rovers. I'd buy one to test my diagnostic and repair abilities down the road, 😂 Only thing that would have scared me is NYC... Those are hard miles I wouldn't pay a premium for over a higher mileage vehicle from a rural area. All that shifting, accelerating, stopping, idling.. only to do it again 2 blocks later. Btw cool to see you get out with it. I live in a rural area with thousands of miles of logging roads. Real fun to go out for a day and never hit pavement, see some bear and moose... I want to pick up a truck bed camper and spend some nights out there. I won't do it in a tent anymore!
Two points, first I counted 4 repairs, Brake pads on all wheels, center dash speaker, supercharger belt, and rear battery, not 3 as video tittle says. Not to mention the removel of shielding from under the engine means extra work being done there. Second, beware of NYC second hand vehicles, this is because of rock salt used by the city when snow is threated. It used to be they would salt only when snow hit the ground, now the city salts when there is a threat of snow. This means that any vehicle used in NYC has or will have a rust problem.
I've never owned a Range or Land Rover but I've had a few Jaguars at this point and in my experience they are just fine in terms of reliability. But every time I bought one you could tell the previous owner just didn't do the recommended maintenance on them and I assume that's why they break on people cause the 1st owners don't do or care about the maintenance so it gets missed because I do the regular maintenance and nothing never had any issues on my Jags.
Wow, for a 2015 that thing is so clean on the underside. I had a Older Range Rover when I lived in Las Vegas and it had the HSE 4.6 engine and not only was it a great family car on those canyon roads it pulled a small flatbed trailer like it was nothing. Very Few Issues with that Car.

Yes the Jaguar engines were built on separate lines within the Ford Bridgend Engine Plant in South Wales… the plant also made some engines for Volvo. Sadly the plant has now gone… but Jaguar now produce new generation engines from a new factory at Wolverhampton in the English Midlands.
I rent these wherever i go on Turo. Love them! Especially the Supercharged V8 500+ HP! I've rented Escalades, Navigators, Audi's & more, but like these Range Rover SPORTS the most. Stereo is amazing. Ride is super comfortable! Amazing handling & very responsive! Once i find the right one in my area, I'm getting one!

Not a Ford v8, it was built in a Ford plant along with many ecoboost engines however, many of its castings have “FOMOCO” casted into them. There are several differences between a coyote/vodoo v8 and the 5.0 Jaguar/Land Rover developed v8. Kind of silly thing lots of people assume. Oh and an fyi, the coyote v8 is an evolution from the aj133 Jaguar v8 4.0, one of the best engines Jaguar ever built.
Do yourself a favor and replace the coolant with waterless coolant, like Evans. Keeps the engine just as cool, but zero pressure. The pressure cap on these is 20psi, which means there is 20PSI working to break the plastic coolant pipes open and push through the water pump seals. Waterless coolant will save you big money on these cars on water pumps and plastic pipe repairs, and maybe save the cost of a new engine, and never needs to be replaced.
I have a 2015 sport supercharged just like this and it’s a beast. No other SUV can compete. Seeing the look on mustang / Camaro / challenger drivers faces as you blow by them is worth the price alone
Basically faster than 99% of the cars you’ll see on the road and definitely enough power! But I can think of a handful of suvs and even trucks nowadays that would smoke it. Escalade V, Durango hellcats, trackhawks, X5M X6M comp and even the Alpina XB7, Ram TRX, Rivians/ any newer evs. The new performance jag suvs absolutely are crazy I could go on for days.
Wizard said "Coyote 302" and my decision was made. Been eyeballing a 2015 Supercharged RR V8 and been on the fence until now. Thanks, Wizard! Making an offer.
These are fantastic vehicles, and they are also shockingly easy to maintain. Oil changes are among the easiest I've ever seen - the filter is right on top of the engine, and it takes less than 20 min using an oil extractor. 2014 - up Rover Sports are also very reliable - not on a level with a Land Cruiser or a Honda Pilot, but better than BMW and Audi and pretty much on par with most domestic SUVs. The key with these vehicles is that you have to USE them - Take it off road, tow with it, etc. and you won't be disappointed.if you are buying it for the brand name or as a mall crawler, look elsewhere. And avoid the 2009-2013 5.0 V8 LR4s and RRS like the plague.
I own a 2017 in the UK. It's got the 3 Liter twin turbo diesel, which is also a Ford Engine (and also found in Jaguars, Citroens, etc.) It's not been bad at all. A couple of common failure items on that engine (especially the throttle body, which always fails and causes DPF blockage.) Insurance is hugely expensive because criminals reign free in the UK, and these are often the target of thieves. It gets 33-38 mpg, makes more than enough power and is a pleasure to drive here and over in Europe. When we take car trips my kids put up a fuss if we say we're taking my wife's Audi; they always want to take the Range Rover.
I owned the previous model diesel, but sadly sold it due to running costs, tax and insurance are expensive in the UK, but it was a very nice drive. Mine also needed some maintenance which was difficult to do myself so would have been pricey.
Should've checked the rear manifold coolant pipe. Like the crossover pipes they are crappy plastic and always split and the seams. Plus you don't need to put it in access mode. That just lowers the ride height for easier access through lower clearance places
Best car brand on Earth. Have owned loads of different brands, moved to RR around 12 years ago and have never looked back. Will never buy anything else.
The speaker can genuinely be replaced by any aftermarket speaker with the correct diameter. Yes there is a proprietary plug but you can bypass it using a crimp tool and some feston connectors and done.
Not a Ford V8, pure Jaguar, only connection is the block was cast at Fords plant in Wales. It is a Jaguar design and a great engine. This car was built under the ownership of TATA, from 2009.

Any car built today is expensive to fix but you kinda hit on it in this video when you said you saved money by using ford escape parts, if more mechanics were as knowledgeable as you they could save their customers lots of money
Not quite related to the Coyote, Wizard. It is a JLR Group V8. The early ones were very problematic with brittle timing chain guides that allowed the chain to slack, and in many cases, the engines would jump timing and be destroyed. That issues was later remedied though. Not very many issues after that with the engine itself. Suspension and electrical issues were still somewhat common, however.
The AJ133 JLR engine, build in Dagenham, right? Well, the problem with whatever JLR tell you is this 1. There is not JLR engine plant in Dagenham, it's a Ford engine plant; my dad used to work there. 2. If you take one of these apart, like I've done quite a bit, you'll find FoMoCo (Ford Motor Company) stamped all over it. Ford take their engine (Coyote derivative) and tart it up with some JLR plastics, and JLR claim it as theirs.
I had a new one of these for 5 years and never had a problem. Can’t say the same for the new bmw and Audi I had prior . The only thing I didn’t like is the infotainment system seemed to be using a calculator cpu and is painfully unresponsive and slow. Kinda crap for a luxury car
up here in Toronto Canada range rovers, rav4,'s Honda crv's are the top stolen cars , we just had a case of a maple leaf hockey player carjacked in a parking lot with guns pointed at them, keep a eye out for that one
The Car Wizards has the coolest walk on TH-cam! I'd love to see a continuous loop video of him just waddling around on his stubby little legs with Pantera's WALK as the background music!
I didn't realize Range Rover used Coyotes. I'm really happy with my 2020 F150 with one. The down side is they don't take gas. You have to feed them meat!
@@DiaperSNiFFER true that they are beautiful cars but they are like these beautiful looking prostitutes on the street. They are beautiful women but it’s the inside what it’s important to me, not the outside. Nothing can beat a Toyota in reliability.
Remember the OG Range Rover the classic? That was powered by a Buick engine. Rover modified Nailhead to fit the body of the car with different headvalves and a different carb setup.
Rover bought the blueprints and the manufacturing equipment for the all-aluminium 3.5L V8 from GM and kept making the engine (as large as 4.6L) until not so long ago. FUN FACT: before selling the 3.5L V8 machinery to Rover, Oldsmobile turbocharged that Buick engine and offered it in the F-85 Jetfire coupe, one of US's first turbocharged engines, along with the T-2.7L H-6 (yes, a Boxer) offered in the same year in the Chevy Corvair Monza coupe. There's arguing whether the V8 or H6 was offered first on dealers, it was that close.
Land Rover was sold by Ford back in 2008 and the 2nd Generation Sport was never made during Ford's ownership, it was introduced in 2013. When Ford sold Jaguar Land Rover, there was a deal for Ford to continue to supply engines from Bridgend in South Wales to J-LR for a few years. Sadly this is now at an end and the Ford engine factory in Bridgend has now closed.
I remember in the 80's when Ford bought Jaguar/Land Rover. The Ford engineers could not believe the lack of quality-control and the out-dated manufacturing techniques.
Ford bought Land Rover in the mid 90’s and I find it hard to believe that the Ford engineers would have had much familiarity with quality control systems at that time.
Yep, and even after dumping mountains of money to get JLR up to date, they basically threw their hands up and moved on. JLR has struggled to be profitable for a long time, and there are few indications that is about to change anytime soon...
It took the Japanese opening factories in the U.K. to bring quality control standards up. I bought several made to rust BMC and British Leyland cars as a young man and if an engine got past 60k miles, you though yourself blessed. Range Rover and Jaguar benefited greatly from Ford - I now own a beautiful Jaguar XKR with a Ford derived engine and modern aluminium construction.
No leaks? I see the exhaust leaking. Both connections were wet! That is not supposed to be like that! Check the vid on 8.31 to 8.39 and a aux battery, a belt and a speaker is not that expensive you say? Not 10 or 12k less then half of that! So like 4k? Anything above live 7 or 800$ is very expensive in my opinion...guess his boats and houses are expensive to maintain...
Q: Why should I buy a Range Rover? A1: It's not the worst brand for reliability. A2: It's no worse than a Ford. LOL. The owner of that Range Rover is brave for driving it so far from home. Well, it's not at the Wizard's shop for no reason.
Jaguar still uses in '22 the AJ 5.0L in very few apps and Land Rover discontinued their use not so long ago. In Land Rover's case the 5.0L replaced the 4.6L, the last of the old Buick all-aluminium V8's. Influence from other manufacturers can still occur many years after the (sale or JV) relationship ends.
Crappy English engines? Lotus , Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Land Rover , I could go on. Oh by the way the AC Cobra was designed and built Slough England, and MG was a best seller in the USA. Crappy British engines.
Hello boss, I come from China and specialize in making Land Rover and Jaguar parts. We have some accessories that can solve problems at a low cost. We hope you have time to learn more about them
I thought that jlr 5.0l were Ford coyote motors as well until I saw the channel I do cars tear down a jag 5.0l And compared it to the Coyote 5.0l he tore down. Totally different motors. I don't think they share a single component.😮
dusty, these things should be really muddy and covered in dirt. range rovers are built to climb mountains, driver through swamps, navigate deserts. and they do it in big leather arm chairs with nice Aircon and a soft ride... amazing things...
Comes with the territory handing pricey maintenance bills , don’t buy a Range Rover if you can’t handle having to spend money. They feel great to drive every time mine costs me 3-5k to fix or keep up with maintenance I just get back in it after it’s sorted and forget about the bill😂 until the next time it’s due something or something breaks
Car Wizard so loves Range Rover because the cash register still rings loudly even on small repairs. Brakes, belt, speaker still makes that register ring.
In Europe 85% Of the Range Rover’s are diesel (to expensive gas prices)version very very creepy cars breaking chains and crankshaft under 100,000 km. And when you have to change a turbo you need to takeoff the cabin from the chassis… The older models Head BMW engines after that Ford engines they make now Range Rover engines diesel version…
Electric Steering !!! My questions if you do not mind: How does that work if you go through a flood and water goes in and shorts motor ? How about if you discharge your battery for whatever reason, would the steering still work ? Is there a repair kit of some sort for this electric steering service, or is it a "Replace the whole assembly" that kills your pocket ? Cheers and thanks for your excellent car guys content. :-)
One of the design cues of the first 1970 Range Rover, and carried on ever since, was the clam shell hood and floating A pillar and canopy. Ford and others later copied the look.
You don't wanna tow to heavy?! Sorry Wizard but i think you never seem what that car can tow.. you will be surprised what we tow with that here in Europe haha
After watching at least 10 videos about them being unreliable, I am surprised with 1 such video. This makes a sense of conflict within my mind to get one of these as a next vehicle or not🤔
As a mechanic if you want something reliable, get a Lexus. If a Lexus is too bland the Porsche Cayennes are actually not bad. They’re decently reliable if well maintained and parts aren’t that hard to find, they use VW parts. They don’t look as good but they drive really well.
If you ever get multiple Range Rovers in the shop simultaneously, could you make a homage to the "I love refrigerators" meme clip, with Range Rovers instead, pretty please?
Love that orangy/bronze color. It would look bitchin on that RT/10 Viper in the background. Or period correct on a 1977 Trans Am with the big hood bird.
Hey car wizard big fan here! I'm just wondering wassup with that isuzu trooper in the back that it's been on many videos lately. I know that you did a video about a month ago but what has been the progress for the trooper.
Generally what cars are better? European or American built cars? Here in the UK there's quite a negative view of American made cars, including Tesla due to their build quality.
Its not the engine but all the elctronic stuff that goes bust. These SUV's are on the bottom of every reliability list in the world. Will never change.
I accidentally called this engine a Coyote. Its actually an AJ 5.0 V8. Which is Ford still. Just FYI
In your Wizardness, I was surprised to hear you call that motor a Coyote, even as your camera caught a "Jaquar/Land Rover" brand on one of the hoses.

It’s not a Bentley. You don’t need to put it into access mode to lift it.
No the suspension should stay up. I worked on mine quite often as the compressor was a bit duff….never bothered with locking the suspension.
Yes access mode is to help you get in and out, not to lift it.
The Car Wizards has the coolest walk on TH-cam! I'd love to see a continuous loop video of him just waddling around on his stubby little legs with Pantera's WALK as the background music!
How many times are you going to suggest this?
Coolest walk? Get a life FFS
I didn't realize Range Rover used Coyotes. I'm really happy with my 2020 F150 with one. The down side is they don't take gas. You have to feed them meat!
Another great video from the wizard. Thanks
Tata motors bought JLR in 2008. So when you say this vehicle was built under Ford ownership at 2:45 you're wrong, Indian ownership.
Continues to be garbage then
Still made of many Ford parts...
$5 or $6 grand are still very expensive for the repairs. Nothing cheap about it.
Yeah, I have a different definition of what “cheap” is I guess.
@@MeanNGreen17 it’s almost like half or 1/4 of the total cost of a 2015 ranger rover.
Glad for the original comment. Thought the same. $6000?! Keep it.
@@FPVphilly I’d still buy it , ✅ these range rovers are the best looking suvs 🚙
Don't worry, Wizard. You'll get that $15k next month on it.
Amazing. I always thought Range Rovers were so reliable
Assume that’s sarcasm….
Ditch the aux battery. Removing it disables the auto start/stop system, which does nothing but wear out starters.
Hey that belt is groovy.
Those processes cost a lot of money. Hard to do when you aren’t too profitable. Plus culture is another factor
Ford bought Land Rover in the mid 90’s and I find it hard to believe that the Ford engineers would have had much familiarity with quality control systems at that time.
There were thos stories of the lengths between the driver side and passenger side not being the same.
I don’t think Range Rover used the Coyote engine, it was a Ford V8 also used in the Jaguar made in Bridgend South Wales.
Range Rovers are SOOOO good. They're worth it.
Q: Why should I buy a Range Rover? A1: It's not the worst brand for reliability. A2: It's no worse than a Ford. LOL. The owner of that Range Rover is brave for driving it so far from home. Well, it's not at the Wizard's shop for no reason.
The car wizard needs to be corrected on this. The AJ-8 is NOT a Ford engine. It’s jaguar developed engine and Ford used it in some of their vehicles.
The paint pops for sure 🙂
The company was bought from Ford in June of 2008. In which case this example is well past the Ford era of ownership.
Vehicles are in development for years before they are for sale and this vehicle was developed under Ford's ownership.
Still had some Ford remnants due to design and production overlap. Similar to MB/Chrysler marriage.
You still find Ford derived parts on them.
Just replacing a belt, battery and speaker for around $5000 is still a lot of money anyway.
In for the repair info, out for the long drawn out look at the condition.
Crappy English engines? Lotus , Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Land Rover , I could go on. Oh by the way the AC Cobra was designed and built Slough England, and MG was a best seller in the USA. Crappy British engines.
No doubt... Rover's wUrst engines were German BMW supplied... sent rover rep to the bottom
Happy Fourth of July to you and Mrs. Wizard.
Happy 4th 🎉
All mechanics love range rovers. Helps them with the boat improvements.
9 ot of 10, 2022 range rovers are still on the road! only 1 made it home!
LOL. That was hilarious
Hello boss, I come from China and specialize in making Land Rover and Jaguar parts. We have some accessories that can solve problems at a low cost. We hope you have time to learn more about them
My heart tells me one day I want to buy a range rover, but my head keeps telling me no!
Love the color, very nice for sure.
Beautiful burnt orange color and in great shape... wonder what a nice one like this would sell for?
$30k-ish
I thought that jlr 5.0l were Ford coyote motors as well until I saw the channel I do cars tear down a jag 5.0l
And compared it to the Coyote 5.0l he tore down.
Totally different motors. I don't think they share a single component.😮
dusty, these things should be really muddy and covered in dirt. range rovers are built to climb mountains, driver through swamps, navigate deserts. and they do it in big leather arm chairs with nice Aircon and a soft ride... amazing things...
My warranty covered my 20k repair to replace air suspension on my 2014 last year. The dealer said they had to hold a gun to their head
There's no aux battery warning on the dash. But you will get a exp stop/start function not available warning.
As of August 2012, most Land Rovers in production are powered by Ford engines.
In Top Gear voice: "IT'S BROOOOOWN!"
What a reliable Range Rover at least the engine will be reliable been a Ford Engine never knew that learn something new everyday
Electric Steering !!!
My questions if you do not mind:
How does that work if you go through a flood and water goes in and shorts motor ?
How about if you discharge your battery for whatever reason, would the steering still work ?
Is there a repair kit of some sort for this electric steering service, or is it a "Replace the whole assembly"
that kills your pocket ?
Cheers and thanks for your excellent car guys content.
:-)
On most new Toyotas, you just get the whole rack assembly. Saves time but these parts will become expensive
Water proof.... all connections in vehicle are IP68 if i recall
One of the design cues of the first 1970 Range Rover, and carried on ever since, was the clam shell hood and floating A pillar and canopy. Ford and others later copied the look.
There is no problem lifting any LR in any mode of the air suspension
If it is an expensive car, the bill is also usually expensive. And if you can't afford the expensive bill, you probably should find a cheaper car
5K for brakes, belts and a speaker? Or did I miss something. Land Cruiser prices, and it must have Michelin tires on it.
You people are wizards at making great videos ❤️🙂✌️
Holly crap i never noticed how close they look to an explorer lol. Ill never look at this the same way again 😂
You don't wanna tow to heavy?! Sorry Wizard but i think you never seem what that car can tow.. you will be surprised what we tow with that here in Europe haha
Hey wizard just to let you know Mrs wizards Discovery Sport and that Range Rover Sport was built under Tata Motors not Ford since 2008
half the land rober bill still seems expensive enough to me; is the belt so tricky to replace?
Needed spares for my landrover, bits I wanted were made by GKN, from a motor factor it was 1/2 the price as the same thing from LR in an LR box!!
After watching at least 10 videos about them being unreliable, I am surprised with 1 such video. This makes a sense of conflict within my mind to get one of these as a next vehicle or not🤔
Get a Lexus
It is a V8 Ford so at least the mechanical side should be reliable. The issues are more about electrical and suspension.
As a mechanic if you want something reliable, get a Lexus. If a Lexus is too bland the Porsche Cayennes are actually not bad. They’re decently reliable if well maintained and parts aren’t that hard to find, they use VW parts. They don’t look as good but they drive really well.
@@matte8441
VW parts are stupid expensive.
@@shwndh Not really. Just need to know where to buy them. Outside the dealership, their parts are no more expensive than a Japanese car.
We’ll cross that bridge when we get there
Happy 4th. of July !!!
Greetings from Chile.
At 1:17 we see Hoovies Porsche 928S4 in the background....
I love these range rovers! Except when something breaks. If the air suspension breaks 🥺😯🥺 MAMA MIA!!!!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Classic Land rover? Yes. New range rover? No way
If you ever get multiple Range Rovers in the shop simultaneously, could you make a homage to the "I love refrigerators" meme clip, with Range Rovers instead, pretty please?
Love that orangy/bronze color. It would look bitchin on that RT/10 Viper in the background. Or period correct on a 1977 Trans Am with the big hood bird.
Happy independence Day Mr and Mrs wizard from me a Brit in the UK
wait 3 more years, that 20k repair bill is inevitable
Truth
Rover videos are the best videos
I expected that you'd have mentioned the purpose of that auxiliary battery - never mind!
The Aux battery is for the auto start/stop.
