    Great points Dan!
I am often the last person at the table to finish food because I eat super slow. I realized this is because I chew too much. I once counted- 80 chews per bite. I got into this habit as a kid because I had 90's-kid old school braces for years and unless I chewed to liquid like you say, the food would get stuck in my braces.
We also had a dinner time = family time at home. It's when you check in with your loved ones including yourself, ask your family about their day and if one of them had a lousy day, laugh it out and solution together as a team.

I wish I could chew my food that much. Great practice to eat slow.

As a child I used to just tell off my family to send the food to starving people because I'm full. I'd refuse to eat after that.
I would also only rarely eat while distracted because smart phones didn't exist and our room with a TV had carpet and mom didn't want me eating in it and getting the carpet dirty.
After growing up, I'd try and eat as fast as possible since it'd take me time to drive to a place to pick up food on my lunch break and get back in time. I'd eat while thinking about other things and got into a habit of not chewing my food more than was needed to swallow it.
I also generally now munch on something as a kind of distraction when I'm trying to think or when bored.
I am generally bad at self mastery, but this just means returning to my roots. Easier to revert to an old habit than create a whole new one: I hope.
damn toothbrush and floss... I'll make that twice daily and daily habits someday!
