I’m right there with you Judy on the art, especially the Impressionist period and Van Gogh! Super jealous of you getting to see Ian McKellen and Roger Allam. Love both of those actors!
It was such a special time, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about the art! Seriously, I never get tired of seeing some of the art that has become like old friends to us! We heard mixed reviews about Frank & Percy, but we ended up really loving it. -Judy
Happy belated birthday, Judy! 🎉 We love London and it is one of our favorite European destinations for quick 3-4 day getaways. However, 'found their way back to the UK' is an interesting way to describe artifacts from places like Egypt and India in the British Museum and elsewhere.
How nice we have that in common, Tim! Kevin actually said the artifacts, "made their way" to the UK. We would have liked to say more, but we know that there are a lot of hard feelings about these important antiquities and we didn't want to stir up (more) of a political debate. It is frustrating to us that so many artifacts are outside of where they were found. There are a lot of important antiquities that are in the British Museum versus Greece, too, and of course, we could go on and on. The very first time we visited The British Museum in 2011, we just couldn't understand about the "replica" situation, but once we grasped what was happening, we were horrified. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I totally get it and respect staying in the travel vs political history lane. It would be great, however, if more people understood the legacy of the British Empire and things like the monarchy. It is easy, for example, the jewels in the Tower of London are amazing, but knowing how and why they are there is important. While someday we aspire to have the time to spend weeks in a destination a key part of our travels continues to be cultural and historical immersion. The greatest takeaway for me over nearly 35 years and 30ish countries is that we as a people are more alike than different. IMO global travel would cure a lot of the problems we face in the US. Sorry for the misquote...I was on a run while listening to the podcast and should have gone back.
We feel the same, and at one point we did edit out a comment that Kevin had made. We just can't believe how much doesn't belong to Great Britain! -Judy
@@tkozikow We completely agree. We have learned so much more about history from traveling versus from our education. And we wish that we had traveled internationally with our children so they would have had a broader world view at a much younger age than it took us. And although it's cheaper to explore on your own, we love booking small group tours with a certified tour guide at some of the historical places to give us the background behind what we are seeing. No need to apologize about the quote; we had to look it up ourselves. It didn't quite sound as I remembered it, so we had to check, too! Thank you for your comment. You speak so much truth. -Judy
These glimpses into where you travel are fun to see. I look forward to returning to London after not having traveled there since 1990. And your experiences in Japan will be eagerly watched as I haven’t been there since 1981 and will be going back next April. Have a good trip! (And a belated Happy Birthday to Judy!).
Thank you so much for watching! This was a pivot for sure, but it was so much fun. We love London, but it really is too expensive for us to spend any significant amount of time there now that we travel full time, so this was the perfect way to get in our fix. And Japan has been wonderful. We are very eager to share our experiences from here! Thank you so much for dropping us this kind comment. -Judy
Looks like you enjoyed a wonderful and memorable birthday in London. My husband I will be there in May, and for me it will be the first time! Very excited to see some of the same places that you visited! Thanks for the tips!
Hi Linda, We really loved our time there. There are so many pockets of the city where you can spend time. We've been in many areas and loved them all. This was a surprisingly nice and comfortable hotel for the price. It was outside our budget generally, but when we booked it, there was very little available, so I don't think it's that expensive at other times. Hit us up if you have any questions at all! -Judy
London is really accessible via the Underground which makes it easy to explore different neighborhoods. We have been there 5 times, usually for 3-4 days, and we typically have a theme or focus. Probably the best one included Churchill War Rooms, Tower of London, and Parliament, but never disappointed.
We've yet to see the Churchill War Rooms or inside the Parliament building. We've taken a bunch of London Walks (www.walks.com) that have been great with incredibly knowledgeable guides who really know their stuff and also know how to tell a story. We have loved all of them! -Judy
BTW have you been to Gordon's Wine Bar in London? Definitely our favorite place for a drink and light meal. Oldest wine bar in London opening in 1890. The wine list is exceptional and the food is simple, but really solid. The cafe in crypt at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square is a great place for lunch and the concerts are excellent.
No, we aren't familiar with either of these, Tim, but we are so glad to know about them now! We'll need to add it to our list of must-do places when we're in London. Gordon's especially sounds like someplace we'd absolutely love. I'll dig more into St Martin-in-the-Fields as well, also for the concerts. Thanks so much for sharing these! -Judy
Hi Garth, We actually do know a little about food and we didn't share everything we ate. This was a whirlwind trip, though, and we have some specific, pointed things we wanted to do. What would you have liked us to talk about regarding food? We didn't show everything we ate in this episode because that wasn't necessarily the. point in this episode. -Judy
Happy Birthday Judy!
Thank you so much! It really was a stellar way to celebrate! -Judy

Visit Alexandria City in Egypt 🇪🇬♥
It is one of the first places we will visit when we head back to Egypt! Thanks for the suggestion. -Judy
I'm in London 😊 ❤
London will always hold a very special place in our hearts. We love it very much! Have a wonderful time there! -Judy
