I so love the brief moment when we see Justine looking out the window while doing dishes. I'd be delighted if you did a video of household chores in the 19th century. I'm curious about how it was done without running water in the house, and what cleaning products were used.
I have severe anxiety and this channel relaxes me and takes me back in time. I am so thankful there is an audience for this type of content. Very interesting and wholesome.
@Lynn Well Lynn for many it's choice they make in certain parts of rural Africa (depending which country they are in, the lifestyle they choose and their income). Considering Africa is no longer in the stone age with every modern convenience of any other place. Many indigenous people around the globe, they also "cook outside" for dishes. It's not always about having to cook this way but it's about tradition and just wanting to do it this way
My great grandmother cooked on a wood stove, the house had a fireplace with like metal racks where she would hang pots, then it had a flat rack where she'd set a skillet, I remember watching her many times as a four year old, it always amazed me that she never got burned or dropped anything, she was so precise with her movements. When my Dad renovated the kitchen with all electrical appliances and counters and cabinets, the next week I noticed he was adding a chimney to the backside of the house, Yes he was transporting a kitchenette for Grandma's old style of kitchen with a wood burning stove especially designed for cooking and grandma was so happy it was so to die for it was nostalgic and i remember all the porcelain or clay mixing bowls.
Hi Justine. I really like it when your cooking videos offer no speaking, just cooking with ingredients. Very classic and a focus on the preparation itself.
It is so much fun watching you cook. I love the sounds of a kitchen especially the stirring and and pouring in the sugar and when there's meat in a big dinner involved The chopping of the carrots and onions etc etc. Oh and the crackling of the fire in the background just oh boy that is so relaxing
The ingredient Pearlash (usually spelled as one word or with the hyphen) is an old German ingredient, also called potash (pottasche in German). Haven’t seen that used in years, we use baking soda now, sure would like to find some pearlash.
I'm incredibly intrigued by the simplicity of this page. My favorite time to watch is at night when I'm trying to calm my mind. Thank you for this beautiful creative page.

Wow, I can't even imagine cooking without the modcons we have today. I can't imagine spending most of the day in the kitchen. I have alot more appreciation for the help and women in the past now who spent hours upon hours preparing food for their families. I bet their food tasted real good too ❤
My dad has never used an electric mixer when baking and he baked a lot when I was growing up. He had a few specialty’s like cookies and this oatmeal spice cake that was so good! He combined two recipes for the cake! I usually don’t use an electric mixer for baking either unless it involves dough! I just prefer a wire whip and wooden spoon like my dad! 😂

Watching Ron now enjoying his cakes. One blessed guy lol. Thanks for posting these videos. Enjoy them so much as they bring back memories of my aunts farm in Wva. It's amazing how well you know the heat ranges by eyeballing it...and the way you can use those hot coals to bake...fry...boil...It's just something that I can watch forever.
As a small girl, I loved Mom's pound cake. She used vanilla as a flavoring and baked it in a bread pan and sprinkled powdered sugar on it when it cooled. In our house, pound cake was expensive and rich, so we didn't have it often. But I'd love to try your old recipe, which is different. Also I was imagining how good your pound cake, "plum" cakes and honey cake would taste. Using rose water and orange blossom water are great ideas. I would like to find those flavorings if possible and add them to my spice shelf.

He was diagnosed as soon as he got his medication for his surgery. It looks great though. Oh wow. I don’t think that you are making any noise when you have to get any snow. It looks really cute and I love it. I have never tried that one. I don’t think that they would have to do that anymore because of the same thing that you have been using.
I have some questions. What is pearl ash and what's it used for? What is rose water used for? Do you use the egg shells for compost for the garden or do you give them back to the chickens for the calcium? Do you have a cow or where do you get your milk and cream to make butter? Do you drink coffee? Love your channel!
I had to look up pearl ash, I'd never heard of it before. It's kiln baked potash, making potassium carbonate, the carbonate being the raising agent. It has many applications. Too much in food can be harmful, but the article doesn't say how much is too much. Justine used only a pinch I think. Rosewater is distilled from roses (surprise) and has a delicate rose aroma and taste. It's used quite widely in Middle Eastern cuisine. It used to be popular as a skin lotion. I used it myself when I had a touch of the sun.
Vanilla was not regularly used as a flavoring until the mid-1800's. Before that, rose water was the flavoring of choice along with orange flower water, if that was available.
I was just thinking about making blueberry muffins in my cast iron heart pan then I watched this. Such cute little heart cakes. I was also looking at all your ash ,have ever thought of making your own soap?
I so enjoy your channel and seeing you cooking from scratch. So educational and fascinating! Take me to any historical park and I’ll be at the cooking demonstrations if you can’t find me! If I were ever to reincarnated, I’d want to come back as a food historian! Thank you for what you do!

Thank you for sharing... I just love this channel ❤️☺️
Boy those Dutch ovens were essential back then! Just amazing! I’d probably dump all the ashes from the top lid when removing into my food!! 😮
I was just thinking about making blueberry muffins in my cast iron heart pan then I watched this. Such cute little heart cakes. I was also looking at all your ash ,have ever thought of making your own soap?

You've gained about 6k subs in the last four days. Congratulations 🎊 👏 @Early American
I so enjoy your channel and seeing you cooking from scratch. So educational and fascinating! Take me to any historical park and I’ll be at the cooking demonstrations if you can’t find me! If I were ever to reincarnated, I’d want to come back as a food historian! Thank you for what you do!
