I honestly have no other reason to say this then just to say it because it’s true… Mel is one of the most incredible artist that you will find on TH-cam and I truly trust her when it comes to her artistry but also taking care of her products Specifically brushes she has review tons of different cleaning agents shampoos cleansers for tools SO I know she knows what she’s doing when it comes to this! I can trust her 100% thank you for the video!

I like to use a bath towel and fold one side of the towel to let the handle rest on the folded edge... a slight tilt of the handle to keep water out of the feral. Conditioner is a great tip. Tysm!

The best thing I ever did for my high end/natural brushes...ALOE VERA GEL. After I wash them, I pat them almost dry on a soft towel and after they are all done w/ that, I take some ALOE GEL and lightly coat them and shape them. Mostly just my natural hair ones (wayne goss, Sonja g, Mac original, hukuhodo) and they have to be pretty much totally dry or it takes forever to finish drying the larger ones. After they are all completely dry, the ALOE makes them have like a crunchy seal. When they are ready to use, I just dust them on my hand to "bring them back to life, lol". They are like brand new every time. I think I learned that from stephanie Nicole back in the day? Its really helped them keep their shape and they are all just as soft as the day I bought them!
I LOVE your brush cleaning dedication! Drives me wild watching videos of people complaining about their "mysterious acne out of nowhere" right before they use a nasty ass brush/sponge that hasn't been clean in months. One gal I watch, I don't think I've ever seen her use a clean brush makes me 👀👀👀

mangolover Same here! Saw Stephanie Nicole do the same thing and had to give it a try. Since I have naturally curly/frizzy hair, I realized many of my hair styling gels perform the same way. Assumed if it conditions and gives shape to my natural hair, it should do the same for my natural hair brushes and I was right! Now as I buy new brushes, I’m not wasting money buying brush guards 💸

    • @rawveganmangolover
      @rawveganmangolover 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s really neat how it makes a little case for the brush head. All of my brushes are synthetic, but I use it for the face brushes I need to shape, like CT’s Powder & Sculpt is a good example.😊

The best method I’ve found is the Dr.Bronners Unscented soap & Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair conditioner when needed 🙂. I learned about using that brand of soap from the Brush Queen herself, Sonia G. It works great at getting all the pigments out, has never dried or damaged any brushes, and lasts forever. Win win! Thank you for the video Mel, awesome as ever 💖.

I am not an expert nor do I have insanely expensive brushes( working on it) but a make up artist I had told me a tip that you can use pure aloe vera gel. I use small small amount in hand and shape brushes while damp and it works amazing for me! As soon as it drys it almost evaporates but does not leave residue I just fluff after and it keeps my brushes so soft and leaves no residue and brush shape looks new! I have been doing this for a very long time and has kept my brushes in amazing condition. I am going to definitely try the conditioner. That sounds like great idea. Great video. As somebody who paints and draws I just can say YES YES YES! My expensive aqarelle brushes from japan are still in a great condition.
The only things I do different is that I use another solid brush soap from a local brush brand (da vinchi) but I used the dove sensitive soap from time to time too - I love their stuff for my body. And I use a soft towel to gently get the excess water out before I lay them out flat.
Great video as always! Thanks for sharing your tips!

When I wash my brushes with antibacterial soap (after every use as well, face brushes too-it changed my skin) I make same movements as I would on my eyes-circular motions, glide (like eyeliner brush) etc., I also use brush guards for drying them and I do them a hair mask once a week. My oldest brush is like 8 years old and it's still in perfect condition :) great video!

Great tips!! I would also add, make sure your brush handles are dry before laying down the brushes to dry the bristles. I found out many years ago that allowing two slightly damp handles to touch one another while drying ruined the lacquer where the handles touched. I’ve also used Dove and have many brushes in great shape that are 20+ years old!!

I don’t like to waste a lot of water so I used cleaners like the Cinema secrets and OMG it works like magic. But I did find a dupe at Walmart that is perhaps a little bit more gentle it’s from a brand called equate. It’s called spray brush cleaner, it quickly cleans and conditions natural hair and synthetic fiber brushes. It’s also alcohol free. I use this With a microfiber towel and my brushes are clean as new. I will go in for a deep clean with soap and water sometimes. However when I’m on set I have to have alcohol to spray the brushes and make up To sanitize.

As a nail tech we were taught at school ( I went to Blanche MacDonald) to run our brushes on the inside of an egg and condition the brush with egg white - my first brush in 1992 was $80 and I still have it . Acetone is so hard on the hairs of the brushes but with proper care they can last . I gently massage the egg white into the brush and let sit for bit then rinse .

Then shape and let sit for 10-15 min ,rinse shape and dry .

The only thing I do differently is that when I place them to dry I put them on a bath towel and I roll up one side of the towel slightly ( only about an inch high) and I place the handle of the brush on the rolled side of the towel so that the brush is angled slightly downwards to help any of the water left in the bristle to run away from the ferrel of the brush. Don’t put too high a roll in the towel tho otherwise when you lean the brush against it the towel can push against the tips of the bristles especially if it’s a really soft brush. You only need a slight lean angle and the brushes dry much quicker.

I honestly have struggled to understand why people like them. I’m going to try to condition it and see how it goes! Otherwise, I use that BB solid too and it really is magic (vs. a gentle bar soap, Dr. Bronner’s, Artis foam, or Sigma’s liquid cleaner, which I’ve had varying degrees of success with). The BB solid is one that I know won’t leave a film behind.

Thank you so much for the tip on using Dove Sensitive soap! I usually use Dr Bronner's liquid soap to clean powder brushes, and the Dr Bronner's bar soap to clean any liquid/cream brushes - and sometimes that soap is hard to rinse out of the brushes. The Dove soap worked beautifully, even for the ones that I thought would be stained. So much easier just using the bar, and a lot cheaper too!!!

I grew up using and loving Dove's Sensitive Skin bar soap! I am definitely going to get a bar to clean some of my natural hair brushes, and I am going to try the hair conditioner tip too. I've always used a tiny bit of olive oil, but the hair conditioner would be much easier to fully rinse out. I use a bar of "ZOTE White Laundry Soap" on my beauty blenders & sponges; it gets them cleaner than anything I've tried and does not leave a residue. You can buy it at Walmart or Home Depot for apx $3.95. Also available on Amazon, but the price is higher. It's a BIG 14 oz rectangular bar of soap (average bar soaps are 3 - 4 oz) that will last you FOREVER! I store it in a plastic food storage container under my sink. Because of it's size & shape, the Zote White Laundry Bar Soap can easily be sliced up into smaller 1 - 2 oz bars for convenience/travel purposes. It is so cost effective compared to the full size Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser, which retails for $16 for 1 oz of product. When it comes to deep cleansing beauty sponges, I've found the Zote soap to be a more effective than the Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser. Just thought I'd share in case it would help someone else on a budget! ;-)

This is a great video, Mel❣️ It seems like no one does this type of purely instructional and helpful video anymore. Thank you so much. You are very appreciated😍 I did want to add something about the brush drying position. I think it’s best to dry them upside down or at least at a downward angle- Like folding the towel to rest the handles or putting something under the tops of the handles. Gravity will help :) When they’re completely flat some water can still seep into the ferrule, especially the bottom portion-the part resting on the drying surface. I personally have one of the Sigma drying towers, but that only does 24 eye brushes + 20 face brushes at one time. So, may not be large enough for you.

Thank you so much for recommending an affordable option! I can't wait to try the dove sensitive soap. Right now I use zote laundry soap for my cheap brushes and the African black shea moisture soap for my nice ones. Dove seems like a great option. Thank you Mel!

Love the solid brush shampoo for makeup brushes but (in addition to that) for some of my more delicate brushes &/or hairs that feel a bit “dry” or splay-out a little after the air drying process, I will follow-up with a light formula argan oil to condition them gently- it really works well!👍🏻

I love the black beauty blender bar. I also love Cinema Secret. No water needed and dries much faster (great for foundation/concealer brushes). I also lay two hairspray cans on my counter (on a towel) and rest the brushes against them tip up/bristles down so any excess water will drip out.

For foundation, the most effective cleanser I have found is a vegan solid shampoo - e.g. Lush. Solid shampoo is better at removing clingy oily foundation.

Thanks for this. You have the cleanest brushes on youtube. They always look new! Turns out it's because you wash them so often. Makes sense! I've been using regular soap since Sonia G said that's what she uses. I only use Parian Spirit on synthetic eye brushes on the rare occasions when I'm using my brushes on someone else.

Brush washing shaming is hilarious to me. Everybody's different, thus has different methods, that's life! Glad to see another bar soap cleaner. I usually clean my face brushes with either baby shampoo or a bar of tea tree soap (both Paul Mitchell and its cheaper dupe at Sally's) since I'm acne prone, and dry/shape on a microfiber towel. Also love the Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner, it's a rockstar to clean my eye brushes and smaller face brushes to color switch during application, and to temporarily clean when I get lazy, lol. Appreciate you doing this video, learned some new tips! 😊

For a liquid cleanser, I use the EcoTools brush shampoo (a little goes a looooooooooong way), and Dr. Bronner's solid bar soap for my sponges. All of my brushes are currently synthetic, so I don't mind using the alcohol "double cleanse" method (90% to remove pigment, 70% to disinfect) on some of my eye and powder brushes if they've only been lightly used; I'll save shampooing those after a couple of uses.

I love learning some new techniques!! I’ve switched to using a bar of Dr Bronners soap that I keep in a travel container for bar soap and it lasts forever so I’m saving money and not creating as much waste 🎉

I use the BB liquid soap for my sponges & sometimes for my brushes. I also use the Eco Tools liquid brush soap and all of my brushes come out very clean. For my animal hair brushes, I have a bottle of rose hip oil and right after I am done washing them, I put a tiny bit of the rose hip oil on the bristles and then I take a little piece of tissue and wrap it around the bristles while it dries. Thanks for sharing how you do yours, and I hope people understand that everyone does things differently and that’s ok, do what works for you right? Love your videos Mel 😘😘💋💋

I need to keep these Beauty Blender solids! I usually just throw those minis in my bottom beauty drawer lol I also use the Clinique brush cleaner every time I use my brushes to clean and it disinfects! Then I save my deep cleaning for the weekends when I have more time. I used Dawn dishwashing liquid because again I have mostly synthetic brushes. When I get more natural haired brushes I guess I will need to switch this up. Thanks Mel!

I use shea moisture bars or dove as well. Real Techniques came out with a bunch of brush cleaning products from formula to the silicone scrubbies and they even say simple soap and water works just as well. Foundation brushes you need something to break down oil. So dish soap is my go to or an oil clenaser works beautifully. The hardest foundation to get out is the original IT Cosmetics... it’s so greasy!

Thank you Mel. I usually use baby shampoo (and sometimes Dove soap!) for my synthetic brushes but I’ve always wondered how you keep natural hair brushes clean. Going to look into these tips as I’m going to be investing in nicer makeup brushes 🤗

I usually use the beauty blender solid too, and sometimes a bar of castille soap. I also use Daiso sponge detergent (6 bucks on amazon) for stubborn cream or liquids, it gets those stains out of your sponges and brushes like nobody's business, but it's drying so it's a last resort type of product for me.
Also, I squeeze excess water out with a microfiber towel and use rubber bands to hang my brushes upside down from a rack! Frees up counter space and I don't have to worry about splashing water on my brushes if I"m at my sink :)

Mel most of the methods you've used I've used. My favorite method is using the Suave 2in1 daily plus shampoo for my brushes. When cleaning my sponges I use the original softsoap. I also clean my brushes after each use. I don't know how anyone can go days between cleaning especially if you have acne prone skin. Now for drying after washing I press the hairs with a paper towel. Which helps reshape them then I use a brush drying stand I bought from amazon for cheap. The brushes are added to the stand so that the brush hairs are appointed down so gravity help further. Lastly I have a little fan that I point at the drying stand. My brushes are dry with in 12hrs. The one thing I haven't tired is the beauty blender solid. So i'm going to pick that one up because I've heard great things about it. This was a great and informative video Mel!!!

Your brushes always look in perfect shape. Thanks for the tips! I do hv a few slightly stained ones, may try a few of your ideas. I love the brush tree's like they have on Amazon. Space saver & dries brushes upside down. Also, I started rinsing natural hair in cold water at the end, like they say to do w/ the hair on the head. I also use those brush guards like on beautylish. Not on all of my brushes but on some that want to splay badly. Did see on Sonia's blog, said let them do their thing, how they are meant to be. I got my beauty guards from beautyjunkees. Nice protection when you travel. I love bathing my babies. :)
