I’m here for the music but stayed for the life journey. This is an excellent take on the downside to alcohol. I went to a Sabaton concert on Saturday and drank a little too much. Sunday morning I realized, “well this is why I haven’t drank in years.” I just feel like I’m too old for this anymore. My body can’t take it and I have responsibilities. It’s so good to listen to your body and appreciate life through an holistic lens. No chemicals needed. Here’s to keeping healthy and clean!

That to me always seems like the healthiest way to sober up. When people say "I can't have a single drop or else I'll lose all control", I feel for them that is terrible, but that's clearly not a healthy relationship with the stuff. What you describe is a very healthy relationship with the stuff, for someone who likes to drink at least.

I quit drinking about a year ago. At that time I was in a really bad spot and wasn't about to blame the alcohol. Long story short I ended up in the hospital in really bad shape due to my heavy drinking. I went through a lot of shit and had to do a lot of soul searching. Once i admitted to myself that all my problems was alcohol related I was then able to start taking the right steps. What a difference a year makes. I am now in a much, much better place, I am happy, content, responsible, confident, etc. I'm even playing guitar again. For me, life is SO much better without alcohol.

Thanks for posting the video! I am an older (53 now, holy shit) dude who has been playing guitar since I was 13. The decision and move to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it was one of two I made during that time, which helped me break out of the trials and tribulations of adolescence, and start to feel comfortable in my skin. The second one was drinking alcohol. I stayed with both of those things throughout my life, but the drinking habit was much more consistent and grew while the guitar playing was whatever for decades, with ebbs and flows. By the time I was 40, my guitar playing hadn't improved at all since i was 20. Maybe it got little worse. But my drinking skills were pro level, lol.
Well, I quit drinking a little over two years ago, and like you, it was a great decision for me. I'm still an amateur guitar player, but my skills in that department have improved more in the past two years than any time other than the first few years when i started playing. That's just one area of my life that's improved. My health, my career, my relationships with my wife, family and friends, other hobbies, my finances. Everything has gotten better. I don't regret drinking all those years. As I said, it helped me when i was young, but i certainly got all I could out of it, at the very latest, by the time I was exiting my 20s. I wish i could have found a way to quit years earlier, but i couldn't imagine life without alcohol for so long. I commend you for figuring out how to quit earlier! I encourage others to consider it.

Thank you for raising awareness of this topic, especially in the metal scene it is difficult to stay away from alcohol.
Since I quit 2 years ago my life also improved tremendously. I used to be lonely, uncreative, judgemental and addicted - not a fun person to be around. Now, after some hard work kicking the addiction, I do indeed like my personality, have amazing relationships with people, started playing two instruments and can take responsibility for all things in life. It's damn hard but it's unbelievably rewarding to quit.

I quit drinking in june, i had a medication change from my neurologist and it had deadly interactions despite my being a depressed alcoholic for the past decade of my life. I almost died in june and I'm not exaggerating. I began losing blood, from puking to the other end. It ended in a massive seizure for around 20 minutes, if my father wasnt with me I wouldnt be here. I bit off a large piece of my tongue and when I woke up from the seizure I puked alot of blood.
Since then I've been in absolute fear of death that I wont drink. I'm feeling alot better and I love seeing more and more positive recovery stories like yours.
Thanks for this Bernth, Im practicing more guitar again, its been hard because I missed a very very large opportunity a decade ago to play guitar in a Black metal band called "Dynasty of Darkness" I couldnt travel at the time due to some legal reasons and spiraled into a depression while waiting for my legal battles to end, which 2 years ago, they did and I have no criminal record and can travel, unfortunately I have to deal with the fact I am 35 now with nothing to show for my life.

My guitar playing has improved tenfold and I'm more driven to succeed at what I want in life. Alcohol and drugs are ultimately a waste of time. It took me 10 years to realize that. I'm lucky to be as young as I am and have that realization; many don't see it until later, if at all. Stay away from drugs and alcohol, kids. Stick to your passion, and don't allow others to sway you from your path. You'll be better for it in the long run, and much sooner in that long run.

Hey Bernth, really inspiring video, resonated with me a lot. I had my last drink in Dec 2016, decided to stay sober for 1 year, and here we are almost 6 years in. I’ve seen cases where alcohol wrecked the lives of people I’ve known or at least heard about. It’s sad that drinking is still a social norm in many cultures.
Really cool to see how much more you can do with a clear head in the morning :-). Keep rockin’ bro!

I've been thinking of taking that step. I'm not a professional at all, but I noticed that slowly my passions like running and playing guitar got replaced with drinking to deal with the stress of work/life and it hasn't done anything useful at all obviously. Thank you especially for showing the books that you found helpful. I want to get back to playing guitar all hours of the day as my vice, just anything but where I am now.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about you. As a young man, you’ve accomplished so much. You e achieved great success. Rather than let this go to your head, you’ve doubled down and worked even harder. All the while remaining grounded and down to earth.
You are constantly putting out epic lessons and guides for up and coming guitarists. Your packages on Patreon are seriously fantastic.
Beyond all of this, you are a GREAT role model for young guitarists everywhere. Globally. If more people who are in the spot light could only show this to our younger generations.
I remember watching your video when you’d said you stopped drinking. You mentioned your practice routine had improved and made a few more notes, but didn’t really make a bug deal about it.
Honestly, I think it’s a huge deal. Congratulations. Too many people let drugs and alcohol destroy what could be a brilliant career.
I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for young guitarists around the world. Thank you.

I stopped drinking a few years ago for two years, then started drinking again....I've been sober for a month now. The party life is great, but I reached the top of my productivity (and happiness!!!!) just during that two years without alcohol, no doubt. I definitely agree with everything you said in the video. Tested, confirmed, and highly recommended. Thanks for the book's recommendation. 👍👍👍🤘

Its awesome your Sober man congrats! on you're 3 years! the only thing that makes me sad about this is I am a Texan and huge Pantera fan. I wish all of the guys in Pantera had gotten sober after they broke up, and had the chance to reconcile their differences. RIP St. Vinnie and St. Dime.

I'm so glad you posted this... Out of work for 6 mo, I almost pawned one of my guitars this weekend to pay for "fun"... That was my last straw with my addiction.
Also, while it's hard to express how you've benefited without sounding preachy but apparently when you add riffs behind it, it just becomes the truth.

Absolutely cool that you shared this. I just got a year again. I had quit for about ten years but I lost some people I loved in a terrible way and fell back into that blur of alcohol. I've tried allot of drugs but alcohol always seemed perfect for me, but it isn't. It takes me nowhere and I start drinking to deal with hangovers. I'm very happy for you know it's rough to be sober around other musicians but it's worth it.

Absolutely true. I quit drinking and smoking and it has improved my practice routine along with my health routine. The idea of ‘I’ll only social drink, or only on the weekends’ is a lie we tell ourselves. It’s just a horrible poison that makes you feel like crap the next day

I really so appreciate this, Bernth. I had several years sober before the pandemic from weed, alcohol and nicotine. Now I have several months sober from all of them. Sobriety is the right choice for me. It is really inspiring to see the musicians I follow emulating positive behavior. Thank you for sharing.

I can totally relate to this. I am sober for 3 weeks now because I had to take pills after a surgery. Can't wait to drink a cold beer x) But in all honesty, I think there is a difference in drinking a beer every few days to having strong liquor or 8-10 beers every day.
