GIANT Alaskan Halibut... Catch Clean Cook

  • This is the first video from @brookcristoutdoors and I trip up to Seward Alaska! We fished with Off the Dock Charters out of Seward Harbor. The first day we got on Giant halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. I separated the videos based on species, so there is still plenty of big fish and action left. We fished a mixture of big grub tail jigs and salmon carcasses for bait. Big halibut are opportunistic aggressive predators that will chow down on most baits presented to them. We filleted our fish at J dock, and then I made a delcious pan seared halibut, with pea puree, roasted asparagus and orange beurre blanc!

Some of the best sportfishing there is. Such a thrill. The story about the commercial fisherman in Alaska catching a 400 pounder while out solo, not killing it before he got it in the boat, and then it thrashing so hard that it killed him will stick in my mind until I catch one myself.

2 years ago in June my friend that lives in Anchorage flew me out to Alaska for a week. He has a sailboat in Seward that he has had since 1975. We spent the night on his boat and the next morning we went halibut fishing on a boat called the Perservance. Went 3 hours out. The most amazing fishing trip I have ever been on. Everyone on the boat caught their 2 halibut. I had over 30 pounds of cleaned fish. We went all over the place when I was there. If I could afford to live there I would definitely be living there. I could afford to live in one of those dry cabins, the ones that have no running water and your bathroom is a outhouse. They are only $400.00 a month with all bills paid. The thing is they are in Fairbanks and it gets between 30 and 80 degrees below zero. They are only a few miles from University of Alaska Fairbanks. Just a few miles out of the city you are a good ways back in the woods. I love that idea but the cold there I couldn't take.

Alaska is such a special place; from the special fish to the birds, from the bears to the moose, like no other place on earth. And, the Halibut really gave your culinary skills a chance to shine. Y'all produced a really great, entertaining video; fishing in beautiful Alaska, then preparing a meal shared with your friends and family. Went on a fishing trip w a guide. Needless to say it was the most unpleasant and worthless fishing trip I’ve ever been on. Buyer beware. In Alaska fisherman are allowed one fish of most species. The three anglers on my boat were not allowed to catch and release. In fact, one angler on the boat may catch all the Halibut and those fish are distributed to others on the boat. The guides focus is on pictures and advertising, not who catches what. He will take pics at the doc and use them to sell his business. If you shelled out $500 for a half day of fishing and watched everyone else reel them in, even yours which you DID NOT catch. Mark it up to a bad experience and move on.

Fresh caught that day and cooked on outdoor grills while you watch, and even though I'm not a big salmon fan, it was the best fish I'd ever eaten, EXCEPT for any of my halibut eats.
BTW...I will echo what many have said and I've said on your other videos: I'm "hooked" on them. I watch A LOT of YT videos of all persuasions, and the absolute clarity of the video, your personality and uncanny ability to explain everything fishing, and the fantastic content from catch to eat is BAR NONE. Worked as a Millwright at PFI Fisheries in Petersburg AK for 15 yrs. Fredrick Sound had World Class Fishing within 20 miles of town on any given day. Chinook's, Coho, Halibut, Shrimp and Crab. My Whaler was set up for 4 and we averaged 500 Lbs+ per outing at our fav Halibut Hole (which was actually a large mound on the glacier floor) nearly every Spring/Summer. I was also running a Salmon Roe Bait Company and many of my Buds were Guides & Pro Fishermen outta Wash & Ore. We'd fly them up and take em to the Halibut Spot, throw out some shrimp or crab pots along the way and wait for Ebb Tide. We always kept the under 40 pounders and gave away the 80Lb+ Halibut as they were much grainier and less tender than the "Chicken" (small) Halibut. Made the mistake of getting a Commercial Jigging Permit for Halibut one Spring and 4 of us hauled up 6500Lbs of Halibut on Rod & Reel in Two Days. I was so sick of Halibut I didn't fish for them again for Two years . . . besides, the Chinook Salmon fishing was amazing and taste pretty good freshly Smoked. Yum !

Salmon have an anal fin next to their poop chute that has several ribs in the fin that keep its shape. That fin is tallest in front & gets progressively shorter towards the rear. If the two Ribs at the front (tallest) end of the fin stand out as slightly taller and dont taper evenly with rhe remaining ribs, then it's a male Salmon. A nicely evenly tapered anal fin from front to rear is a Female.

I love halibut on the grill with a bit of Tony Cacheres cajun seasoning, Asparagus is a perfect side. I like to give it a sprinkling of fresh grated parmesan before I throw it in the oven

Great Fish. I used to fish for Halibut in Adak Alaska while in the US Navy. We had a Charter Boat we could rent ran by MWR. Lots of fun. Caught my fair share but nothing real big. My Warrent Officer caught one weighing 680 Pounds.

Been catching Flounder on the Gulf coast of Mexico for over 55 years. A delicious fish to be cooked so many ways!
Flounder is the general name for a whole Flatfish family, including Turbot, Sole, Plaice, and more. Halibut is part of that family. The confusion comes from the fact that several species have “Flounder” in their name, while others, like California Halibut, aren't actually Halibut at all.
I hope, to one day, be able to catch cook and eat a Halibut.
    BTW great video, I'm a fan. Thanks 🎣 🐟

Some of my favorite TH-camrs will forage for oysters, clams, neck clams, cockels, etc. Plus, they will fish and/or dive for lobster. After this, they do a shoreline clean and cook. The west coast has quite a bit of that. Traveling is always good.

I think this is one of you two's best videos from start to finish. I showed my wife the dinner you plated and it was the most beautiful display. One of the favorites of mine is both of you having separate sites is seeing you two together more often, your a good match. P.S. Brooks dad is the man with a plan, I would have taken 2 pieces not one! One more thing we're can I look up the butter and orange recipe to get measured amounts?

By far my favorite channel on TH-cam. Thanks for all the great content Vic and Brook. I’d personally like to see more talk about the tackle you’re using in each video. Not sure if you ever used to watch the Spanish fly but I used to love Jose’s tackle box segment.
