The bigger ones are released as breeders, they only keep small ones to keep the fishery alive, I’m sorry that California is an assbackward state on the steady decline…
The experience of going fishing in Alaska would be epic in itself, but catching and keeping those size Halibut would be a bit of a let down. If at all possible I would had kept releasing until I got a bigger one, or maybe requested a different location🤷♂️
Later in the trip, we got some better-sized fish. There are specific slot limits in place that regulate the size of halibut you're allowed to keep, and once they reach a larger size, they become off-limits. These regulations are important because larger halibut play a crucial role in the population. A small female (~50 pounds) may produce around 500,000 eggs, while a large female (~250 pounds or more) can lay several million eggs. Not only do bigger halibut produce exponentially more offspring, but their eggs also tend to be of higher quality, increasing the chances of survival for the next generation. This is why conservation efforts prioritize protecting large breeding females. In episode the 4th Alaska episode that comes out we get into some larger fish. One around 200 pounds and in order to keep it we had to report the fish and pay $500
You couldn't have asked for a better day!!! Absolutely glass out there!!🎉🎉🎉
Fishing in Alaska is at the top of the bucket list for me. Hope to get there later this year. Stoked!
Shoulda fished the mini jig, get them slot halibut a lot easier
Sorry I'd be pissed to spend all that money and time to go Alaska and catch smaller halibut than I catch in California
