I own 2022 Tracer and I’d say this bike is a pure joy. Very well balanced and easy to accessorize. Standard package is already much better than competition. GT+ rises the bar, and those who need all new tech will enjoy the bike for sure. Those who want a great package for reasonable price will for sure enjoy GT. Best engine and chassis in current market from my point of view.
Due to an unshedualed dismounting from a bike on the ride home from work a couple months back I was in the market for a new bike. I had my heart set on the new GT+ as this is a new for 24 model here in the states. I spent a couple weeks hunting one down and rushed over to the dealership to go pick one up, just to get a left over 22 GT. It came down to cost, the GT+ out the door here after tax and fees is $20k where as the 22 GT that was sitting right next to it on the showroom floor was out the door $15k. I love the new features on the GT+ but I love that $5k difference in my bank better.
I got my Tracer 9 GT last year and absolutely love this bike. I’m itching to get some miles in…soon. The long term review you two did is what made me decide on the Tracer, thanks for the honest looks at the bikes.
You have sold me - I was thinking of getting the Suzuki to replace my departed ZX-14, but watching you riding along those roads, and your commentary has me changing my plans now. I knew I didn't need 150hp, and the slightly smaller Tracer 9 is a better fit for me. It certainly has the sporting ride I am looking for, judging by this video. Great job Simon.
Truly said this is one of the best reviews ever! I can feel that tingle is alive when you speak in front of camera. 30 years, what? Come on you do not count them that way. Imagine what bikes we are going to face in the 3yrs...thank you for sharing this experience.I really like this bike since it was revealed to the world on its first version.
It’s brilliant how you expose the pros and cons of each bike, absolutely brilliant. And your pace riding while talking is… well… this kind of riding skills is what makes all your talking worth enough, when you say you will o you will not choose the bike, one can understand that the bike is properly tested when advising it or not. Thank you VERY MUCH!!!
I own a 2021 GT and it's clear that the GT+ is an improvement. Adaptative radar cruise and braking is an added safety feature. Moving the wheel from the right to the left and changing the wheel to a joystick makes more sense. And the single TFT seems to be what critics of the dual screens want. Still, the fundamental parts of both motorcycles are the same. And this is why I will be keeping my 2021 (16,000) miles and counting. I've sorted out the two problems I had with the stock bike, the windscreen and seat. Thank you for your insightful take on the new bike Mr. Hargreaves.
That was no rambling Mr Hargeaves ...just good old natural biker commentary delivered with balance , honesty and enthusiasm...another well done to Bennett's and Simon in particular ( i don't always think this of Bennetts reviews but this has to be amongst the best of many : )
I find the scuba steve screen on my 2022 allows for my phone to sit centered and not block either screen. Not great looking, but functional. I love this bike.
I love my 2022 Tracer 9GT! I may have gone for a GT+ for the better screen and radar, but not available in Canada yet. I agree with the comments, and add that this bike is so easy to ride quick and smoothly around town short shifting and not getting over 6000 rpm. Smooth and torquey. Effortless commuting.
I would love a GT+ just for the dash screen, but the regular GT is already a bike too rich for my blood, so nevermind the GT+. Best I can do is look at used models to get one. There currently is a 2021 GT at a dealer in Ottawa with 15k km on it for $14k that I am eyeing super hard. Only thing is it's over 2.5 hours away from me, so a bit far, but I'm still strongly considering it.
absolute brilliant review. much appreciated. I feel more in love my 9gt after this. But I had to view it twice as I pretty much only focused on the road the first time. Second time I closed my eyes and just listened 😂
That looks a great, great bike. Nice to see some really experienced journalists putting the bikes through their paces. I couldn't have talked and ridden at that pace. Is the GT+ worth it? After seeing it at the MCN Festival, I would say yes. The dash looks so much better and it's what I disliked most on the previous model.
I am in the market for a new bike and have been watching hundreds of videos and reading road tests to narrow down my options. This review stands out for the real road riding and the very informative and entertaining commentary. Personally I would be happy to pay the premium for the adaptive cruise control and other additional features. The GT model is there if someone doesn’t want to pay the extra.
Yam moving the game along. Once you try the ACC on a long run you'll never go back to regular Cruise for touring. I would like to see a belly-pan to hide that exhaust.
That driving in Sadinia and the sound of that tracer just made me want to go ride my bike! Unfortunately my cb500x doesn’t move or sound anywhere near that, but well that was the reason I was watching this video in the first place😅
I love my 900GT, never been keen on the 9GT, I hate the clocks and dont really like the looks much either. You can keep the radar cruise, I dont want it. Yamaha needs to give us this bike with that TFT for £14k or less and painted a decent colour or my next bike is likely to be the Multistrada 950S.
Hi Simon, great review, informative and balanced. I own a 2022 9GT and had 2 previous models. The newer GT engine is a step forward from the previous, more torque and easier access to overtaking power etc. I’ve never been struck by the clocks, as a glasses wearer, I find some of the info a little difficult to focus on whilst on the move. I’ve done over 10,000 miles in the last 12 months on the GT. It’s been round the TT, lapped the Nurburgring, up Stelvio and grossglockner, Assen, Spa, Chimay, Le Mans to name but a few. It’s a fantastic bike. I reckon we’ll try a new one, the radar cruise sounds interesting!
P.S; In only FIVE YEARS,nearly 100% price increase, I only paid £7499 for original Yamaha Tracer 900 in 2018, literally couldn't sell it 3yrs later, silly offers in the £4's with only 6k miles...certainly wouldn't spent £15k on one!
P.s. try to contain yourself a bit more on these jaunts Too many crazy over takings of ‘tin cans’ 😮😮 We want to enjoy these reviews for many more years to come ❤
I really enjoyed this content and the presentation. I only have a 29in inside leg and so sadly find it too high for me unless on my tiptoes. Keep the reviews coming. 👍👍👍
lovely Bike great review, you have transitioned accross to video keeping the same style and quality displayed in your written reviews, the Renaissance man of bike journos
excellent ! I've been interested in the Tracer 9 GT for a few years now. Still haven't managed to get a test ride ! Not sure I need the radar stuff, I'm not keen on riding on dual carriageways and motorways , where its likely to be most useful. The new dash looks a lot better, a better QS and panniers sound useful. If they found there way on to a standard Tracer 9 GT , I could be completely sold, that is after I manage to get a test ride !
We just bought a Tracer 9 GT+. Our first ride was just a bit short of 200 k's. Could hardly get off it and everything hurt. But, that said, we had an FJR1300, which is the king of the road as far as I'm concerned. We traded because it became a bit heavy to handle for us (in weight, that is). I hope we'll get used to the Tracer soon.
I've got a 2021 mt09 but starting to ride and tour more and I think the T9gt might be my next bike. However, it's actually similar to what you said about the difference between the price where actually I can do hundreds of miles a day on my mt09 and not changing, for me means more money for actually riding! Do still kinda want one though! 😊 thanks for a fantastic sincere review, hope you slapped that guy at the end! 😂
Please take a ride test on the T9GT on some twistiest that you are familiar with the MT09. Reason I'm stating this: I've done it myself and forgot about the Tracer. It looses a lot of sportiness for not that much more comfort. The MT09SP is a better compromise, especially if you have riding roads near you. The Tracer is way better on the highway of course, but who wants to ride highways anyway?
@Silenti620 thanks for that, I kinda figured that might be the case. Most of the riding I do is twisties, so definitely wouldn't want to end up with a compromise for abit more practicality on the yearly few days touring... thanks again
love the fast show pop up😀🙃only certain people will know (great tv series by the way),fantastic review and this bike is on my list to try when the weather is better ,looks like the roads are just biking heaven.
Top Review Mr H. We'll hear more on FEC in due course. The triple sounds good and goes well. Shame it hasn't got a start and better screen, be perfect then. C 😀
Very helpful information presented in an enjoyable way. I hope that this bike comes to the U.S. soon. Given the congestion on many highways (even in Rocky Mountain states) I am inclined to pay extra for the additional technology. It is difficult to avoid some stretches on congested highways when trying to focus on scenic enjoyable back roads.
Really excellent review Simon, cheers. No idea how you ride those roads at pace and manage to keep talking! Clear winner of the dangerous riding contest right there at the end though... Jeez 😲
Mint, thanks Steve - aye, this one was a challenge to keep yakking and ride like that :-) - made even less sense than usual. Mmmmm... the rider doing the overtake is a top bloke and we all love him to bits, and nothing is meant by his need to overtake everything - we sort of roll our eyes and go oh well, that's him... don't get it, but there's nothing willy-waving or competitive about it - or if there is, no-one cares. But sometimes you just think oh ffs, keep it in yer pants mate, for your own safety's sake. And stop interrupting me! Go in front or behind, whatever, just 'kin stay there!
@@writestuffmedia Pretty sure I recognise the riding kit and style... Looks like a nightmare to ride with but great fun in the hotel bar afterwards I'm sure! 😉
Brilliant. After much deliberation i went from my beloved Tracer 9 gt to the Tenere 700 as i need something capable offroad. I would have kept them both if i had space in my garage, nevertheless, i dont. Anyways, i also wouldnt get the + version. Little is more i think, and if i need all that crap i would take the car personally. I am however waiting for Yamaha to stick that lovely cp3 into a Tenere!
I cancelled my gt+ order for a 2022 model and glad I did. 15000 is way to expensive and now hearing orders not being delivered till August when originally was may
Here's a test to check out whether the radar assistance shortens braking distance. Do four maximin stops on a clear track 100k to zero, and take the average stopping distance (my guess is 39 metres) then repeat with a paper wall set up at that distance (to reflect the radar beams) and see if the bike stops before the "wall". No harm done if in fact the radar assistance results in a longer distance, just some torn paper.
Hi Alan - I take your point, but I think the benefit of augmented braking - whether it's ABS or this system - isn't to out-brake practised riders on dry tarmac when then have a defined stopping distance to 'beat'. ABS (and this system) is designed primarily to assist during panic braking whilst not interfering with normal braking. Taking ABS to a test track and 'beating' it doesn't prove much. Reducing impact speed by any amount - by slowing the bike in a panic situation instead of losing the front and/or sliding with little deceleration - is more useful.
Great review. As much as I love my Ducati V4S Pikes Peak, this bike seems fantastic. Love the design and sound and great review. I have watched a couple of videos on this bike and the fog lights always seem to only have one light on. Is that normal and if so, why? Thanks
Fantastic revue but, my hang ups are: 15k and rubber brake hoses, the look of most Yamahas are a mess, the assumption that people wanting a touring bike don’t want bright colors? Stick a speed block color scheme on it! Red and white, black and yellow. And for goodness sake, put a tiny bit of thought into the exhaust! I would want to celebrate that wonderful engine with a nice tail pipe.
Braided brake lines are not essential to function or worth the price out of the gate. Only a concern for 2nd or 3rd owner as the guy who took most of depreciation hit already paid enough for new. Same thing with tail pipe which adds cost and weight. The sound of the motorcycle exhaust as long as it is not harsh or lousy is easily near bottom on my list of must haves. In fact my biggest pet peeves about motorcyclists are the juvenile obsessions needing to be heard. Obnoxious and disrespectful and in particular the loud pipes saves lives is complete mind-dead BS.
in 2016 i had the MT 09 Tracer in Australia, I was keeping up with the 1000cc BMW sports bikes! brilliant bike especially on the hot sticky aussie roads. Then I bought the Tracer 900 GT in 2019 in the UK, and I was disappointed with the amount of wind buffeting and vibrations that came through the foot pegs and handlebars, so I sold it the day before lockdown! But I'm curious about the new updated models now. hmmmm, I may go and do a test ride
Brilliant review. The traction control on my KTM GT has just spat me over the bars and broke a lot of bones. This is top of my replacement list. Being honest, I have lost all confidence in rider aids and want to switch the lot off. Adaptive braking and radar fill me with dread. Can I switch everything off on the standard GT and will it stay off?? Don't mind ABS, but the rest must be off. I don't want to mess about switching stuff off every time I get on the bike. Thanks fella
I would be very surprised at high sales at that price compared to the competition I have ridden the previous model and then tested the ninja1000sx which I found amazing, and bought the 2022 tourer model and then added more accessories and still didn't spend 15k. Big problem I found on the tracer was wind noise and tubulance, and at 6ft 1 the seat and leg position I found uncomfortable. Must say though I found the handling in twisties good
Agree....the bike has doubled in price in just 5yrs...Yamaha sold loads,as they were good value, that's gone now! Sat on a GT+ just yesterday, big fat ass on it too!
Fantastic review Simon! I would be interested in seeing this compared to the Ducati V2S and to hear your thoughts. Does the ACC set itself the speed limit for that permitted road? And then adjusts to speed automatically say before hitting road works at a lower speed?
@@Cycle9568 That's a good shout. Love the 950S. And the V2 - although personally, the lower seat height is a bit too low; but I understand how many more riders will appreciate that.
Thanks - yes, that's an interesting comparison. Hmmm... I think the Ducati is the very much more desirable bike in terms of looks, but to get to the Tracer spec you'd need the Travel version, with panniers, which starts at £16.5k... and you wouldn't have radar etc. Dynamically, I think the Tracer is more compact and agile, quickshifter is better, the engine... hmmm, they're obviously very different but it's hard to say one is 'better'. I think I prefer the Tracer's triple, but not by much because the Multi's engine is good (and blimey, is it versatile!). It's a really tough choice.
..and no, the ACC is manually set. Good idea though - although that starts to get into the territory of controlled speeds! Hate the idea of a bike being electronically limited to the set speed limit!
I like your reviews and your honesty. As far as the bike goes, I cannot understand the obsession with quick shifters on touring bikes. Where I ride in Queensland, I might ride for two or three hours and not need to change gears except for towns. For my riding, quick shifters are just a unnecessary complication that adds cost. With your riding on the review, bit too crazy for me but it looked like you enjoyed yourself.
@@frankseymour4162 I shipped my Ducati to Canterbury NZ...sold it after only 150km...long straight, boring roads...offroad is the place to be there,as in Arizona, my other job!
With all the improvements that Yamaha have put on this, shame they still can't put a decent front mudguard on their bikes. And that goes for all manufacturers
Fuel range to empty still appears to be one of the calculations that Yamaha hasn't included. 14,000 miles on my Tracer 9GT now, and after a couple of hiccups with the TPS that have been sorted, it is still as crisp and intoxicating as ever. The seat, though, remains a criminal offence.
Yes! That annoyed me too, on the 2021 bike... And you're right, I can't see a fuel range trip on the new dash. The seat, on the other hand, never bothered me.
Nice bike & review. I would of thought it’s rivals were the 900s such as the Tiger, XR & V2s? I tried them all last year & went for the Ducati. Not really a bad bike among them, just down to personal choice
This bike looks good but it’s nearly 15k. Triumph dealers will offer the tiger 1200 gt pro with topbox fitted for 17k. Which would you get? Yes I’ve ridden both although it was a demo tracer gt not the gt pro.
Personally I'd go for the Yamaha - I'm currently running a Tiger 200 Rally Explorer and while I love it, it's a strange kind of love; it's intriguingly imperfect and I have to keep going back to it to understand whether it's me or the bike. Life can be like that sometimes. So maybe it's more of a long-term relationship thing. The Tracer is like a song I love immediately.
So, a question, I'm a born again hooligan coming back after 9 yrs , and like the look of the gt+, but is the standard gt as good a bike as an re-entry point. Nb I've got an old CBR 600, which I loved, but needs some attention.
Looks a lot of fun, not sure I need all that tech unless I was as quick as you boys🤣👍. Might try the standard GT if I tire of my lovely Multi V2S which I’m very happy with…which is a sports tourer in my opinion.
@@IanTed ... I always wondered who stood back, looked at the clay mock-up, and said 'Yes, that's gorgeous, that's the one!' and signed it into production. The new bike has definitely taken a step forward in terms of paint finish and overall finish quality - things like the dash, the switchgear and the new panniers all look more - complete. But the overall look of the bike - its style - still completely underplays how good it is underneath.
[10:22] You came up behind a truck, just before the traffic lights area. If the bike had decided to brake (when you were not), you would have been annoyed, but it didn't and you were able to safely overtake the truck. So, no controversy there.
Ya mean follow the lead rider? Oh, I'm all for a bit of fun. Generally, stick to the lead rider like glue - although it's never a requirement; no-one gets left behind because the group always gathers at a junction etc. So riding at your own pace is always paramount, and that's always made crystal clear. No-one needs to lob it big time on a launch. Rule number one. For most of us, ahem. But the worst launches for lead riders are, sometimes, Ducati. We used to have a Dakar legend called Bepe leading us on some of the launch rides and, where he could, he'd get a boogie on a bit. I think Ducati have sacked him off, which sucks 😞 But some of their launch rides were SO SLOW it was hard not to nod off. I remember the launch of the DVT 1200 Multistrada in 2015 and it was like a funeral procession. On the other hand, the V4 Multi launch during Covid with Bepe - when the gloves were off a bit - was a goodly rate. It kinda depends who's bossing the launch protocols. Get a PR dude who's all worried about the brand image and corporate stuff, and it can be terminally dull. Get someone who understands the point, and it's ok, game on. Triumph are usually a good pace, and Honda get the pace spot on - fast enough to keep you interested, but not so fast you can't talk when you're filming. They're brilliant. Suzuki same - and there's a common denominator, sometimes (the event organiser). Haven't done a Kawasaki launch for years but on the last one ... Z900 I think... had a proper good blast with Al Fagan - still remember that as one of those high five moments. Cheesy, but earned.
Hargreaves is fabulous at getting his point across. Could listen all day to him. Those 30 years show.

Looking for a 2nd bike for me and the missus- cracking review - this is now on the list 👍🏻🇬🇧- might need Bennett’s help to choose.
Another great video , well done, drink well deserved .
@@SteveR76 Wye aye pet! 🙂
That is one great review thanks, we can see you just love this bike 🏍 🎉
I cancelled my gt+ order for a 2022 model and glad I did. 15000 is way to expensive and now hearing orders not being delivered till August when originally was may
the sound of that cp3 its sublime even with stock exhaust
Great informative review, I reckon I would pay the extra for the new gt9+.
Cheers Dave in Australia, it would suit our big country touring around.
I just want the TFT on the GT and I'll buy it straight away
Great review. As much as I love my Ducati V4S Pikes Peak, this bike seems fantastic. Love the design and sound and great review. I have watched a couple of videos on this bike and the fog lights always seem to only have one light on. Is that normal and if so, why? Thanks
One is the low beam, the one off is high beam
Great review!!! Just one curiosity: what’s the music of the intro? 😜
The real benchmark to compare would have been the Versys 1000 SE
Fantastic revue but, my hang ups are: 15k and rubber brake hoses, the look of most Yamahas are a mess, the assumption that people wanting a touring bike don’t want bright colors? Stick a speed block color scheme on it! Red and white, black and yellow. And for goodness sake, put a tiny bit of thought into the exhaust! I would want to celebrate that wonderful engine with a nice tail pipe.
Spotted the rubber brake hoses too - cheapskate move by the accountants I feel
Yeah agree, even my £10k triumph bobber has braided hoses and it's aimed at cruising.
Glad I’m not the only one that gets irritated by the little things.
Absolutely no excuse for rubber brake hoses in 2023.
As always very nice bike
I just wish you could just get the GT non plus with the dash and updated quickshifter 😢
in 2016 i had the MT 09 Tracer in Australia, I was keeping up with the 1000cc BMW sports bikes! brilliant bike especially on the hot sticky aussie roads.
Brilliant review.......Cheers
Looks great sounds fantastic.
How well does it handle bumps and broken pavement?
Fantastic review Simon! I would be interested in seeing this compared to the Ducati V2S and to hear your thoughts.
Does the ACC set itself the speed limit for that permitted road? And then adjusts to speed automatically say before hitting road works at a lower speed?
I believe a used 950S would be a better option…especially a spoked wheel version.
@@writestuffmedia being 5’8 the lower seat height won’t bother me one bit.
Simon, I hope to get your review of the 2023 Niken GT. (I saw Mossy's quick ride on it a couple of months ago.)
It's coming, it's coming! Soon!
Here you're changing every 30 seconds... Scotland
@@williamrae9954 Good point. The world is very different. Thanks for reminding me.
@@frankseymour4162 I shipped my Ducati to Canterbury NZ...sold it after only 150km...long straight, boring roads...offroad is the place to be there,as in Arizona, my other job!
I think Tracer family is the best what you can buy nowadys power/weight ratio, position, reliability.
All that tech and they still can't get both headlights to work on dipped beam! Perhaps they should put a black patch over the non working "eye".
I just put the other one on full beam which is no problem in the daylight.
In EU looking at the pricing, GT+ is 2000EUR more than the GT. thats a big difference just for the radar option
Great video Simon but who was that making the rather dubious overtake at the end!
Love to tell you but I can't. That was far from the worst on the day!
I still don’t like how it looks but I’m slowly coming around. I’d take a GT with the new clocks please which I guess will happen in fairly short order
How would it do for a long weekend 2 up?
So, a question, I'm a born again hooligan coming back after 9 yrs , and like the look of the gt+, but is the standard gt as good a bike as an re-entry point. Nb I've got an old CBR 600, which I loved, but needs some attention.
Is the 2024 identical? Thanks 👍🏻
Why no mention of the KTM Super Duke GT? That's a sports tourer aimed squarely at the same market as those other bikes you mentioned.
great review
is a big difference between electronic suspension and standard? Just can't decide, should I pay extra 4000 USD for this
Looks a lot of fun, not sure I need all that tech unless I was as quick as you boys🤣👍. Might try the standard GT if I tire of my lovely Multi V2S which I’m very happy with…which is a sports tourer in my opinion.
The Multistrada is a better looking machine in my humble opinion 👍
@@Banditmanuk Just don’t get the hideous front end and pannier design, needs an Italian designer. Awesome engine though…
It's will be good if yamaha takes this model technology to upgrade their old super tenere 1200 into new
I hope they come to Singapore 😍😍
5:15 isnt the GT+ windshield/screen slightly(very slightly) wider and taller?
Is the GT9+ sold in the USA or is it under a different name ?
Dream bike 🤩
Looking for ny next bike moving away from BMW theyve gone too expensive. Yamaha are superb quality and this machine looks very good
Whats the reason behind that weird brake fluid plastik can? I mean...so much tech and than this wobbling thing.
I can't find appsaloutely anywhere ... all that tech .. is there hill hold control??
You got me - I looked, and no there isn't as far as I can see.
@Simon Hargreaves that's gutting with all that tech .. I never thought i would use it on my new, now I'd not be without it.
I’d opt for the standard bike if it wasnt for that double dash , just something i couldnt live with feeling like i was always being watched
Great. Again
The extra £1800 is worth it to not have to look at the fugly clocks on the standard model.
Take off the standard screen & put on a puig sports screen. Yippee no more buffeting.
Something got me wondering; the press bikes, how closely, if at all, do you follow the recommended break in directions? Lol
Thanks for the response. I was asking about engine break in; sorry. Lol
Also I believe paint work other little things are supposed to be better.
That's true, the paint is much nicer.
