iPhone 14 Pro - Two Weeks Photographer's Review

  • I wanted to make a bit different video than my typical film photography and portrait-oriented videos, so when I got the new iPhone 14 Pro a few weeks ago, it was the perfect excuse to do my own version of a tech/product review. I brought the phone to the Washington Coast, as well as the North Cascades, with a few spots in between - testing out things like the new 48 Megapixel sensor, and plenty of other interesting software and hardware updates to this year's model.
    I plan on recording and uploading a PART TWO video soon covering portraits shot on the iPhone 14 Pro, as well as some of the specs I didn't get to as much as I wanted in PART ONE.

    I would describe this video as a breath of fresh air in today's TH-cam. You've done a great job and combined with your extensive knowledge,which is prevalent not only through your speech but also the "depth" of your photos and your video, you have the prospect of making this channel a big deal in the field of photography. Also the shooting location plays a vital role in my opinion, so opting for national parks is a wonderful idea. I'm glad to be here almost from the beginning! Keep up the good work, wish you the best!

    Iphones are still not good at HDR processing. You should give pixel 7 pro a shot if you can get hands on , would love to see comparison and ur opinion on both.

    • @torreymerritt
      @torreymerritt  ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I can see what you mean, I'm definitely curious how some other leading manufactures handle HDR. The Pixel 7 looks really impressive too. Maybe I can get my hands on one sometime to try it out!

    • @berryvolcano3787
      @berryvolcano3787 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Pixel overdoes the HDR, a lot of the time it looks terrible. Shadows and bright sky's are good a lot of the time, it's finding that balance

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The iPhone intentionally goes for a slightly higher contrast. And by going for the brighter shot, it can clip highlights . I think Apple doesn't ever want people to get one of those grungy dark photos due to bright sun/sky

    • @stephaned3072
      @stephaned3072 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pixel remove every shadow.how is that good hdr? You cant get shadows naturally even if you want too. Their processing is too much even skies show details and outline that are not even there. It doesnt look natural

    • @ESKATEUK
      @ESKATEUK ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The pixel 7 has horrendous processing. The images are also heavily post processed and over sharpened. The portrait mode is a joke, the natural low light picture and video quality is abysmal. The only place it performs on par or better than the iPhone is super low light. The positives of the 14 pro max camera massively outweigh the slight difference on HDR, which is what it is. The iPhone blows out the highlights a bit to capture great shadow detail, while the pixel keeps the highlights in check, but have dark, under exposed and lifeless shadows. I’d take the blown out highlights any day, so at least I know my subject will still look good and bright, unlike the pixel where the picture will have a dull unusable foreground but a slightly better sky.

    Really love the way you present this. It gives a fresh take on how to utilise the tools given, and not always like how people would like (always pitting one against the other to see who's better).

    Your comment about the 35mm and 50mm equivalent “lenses” had me thinking could a third party app tap in to the 48mp sensor the same way Apple does to produce the 2x “lens” and label it 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm. Each would be a 12mp crop from the full 48mp sensor

    • @torreymerritt
      @torreymerritt  ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be the next best solution for the current hardware! I definitely still want a dedicated 35mm or 50mm true optical lens, maybe someday!

    • @torreymerritt

    • @mich8261
      @mich8261 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@torreymerritt I wonder if it could be done with a Shortcut routine (I don’t know how to build those) or if one of the third-party apps is able to do it from within their app

    • @danu6718
      @danu6718 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be done without leaving the app. You can fix it in the camera settings where you can have the ‘raw’ and ‘macro’ toggle switch on the main screen while you are using. You can also set it so that the same settings you are using don’t go back to reset after you take some shots and close your camera app.

    • @mich8261
      @mich8261 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danu6718 yes, you can indeed toggle Raw on and off right in the Camera App, but if you want to switch between ProRAW 12mp and 48mp you have to go into Settings -> Camera -> Formats -> ProRAW Resolution

    I still try to get used to the main lens being 24 instead of 26mm. To me it feels significantly more wide angle-y when it comes to distortion/compression etc. and it's sometimes too much for a main lens in my opinion. Other than that I love the iPhone 14 Pro's camera. Your photography is absolutely top notch by the way. Fantastic video, great color grading, great moods you have created. Incredible what such capable hands can do with a phone-camera nowadays. :)

    • @torreymerritt
      @torreymerritt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a walk around lens it’s much too wide for me as well, I absolutely prefer something like 35mm for those everyday shots

    Torrey, keep up the good work!!! Was the video aesthetically pleasing? Hell yeah! Was it informative in this day and age, where everybody's rushing? I'm not sure. I'm at 3 minute mark and there's almost no review, just the facts from the Apple keynote. Viewers will stay for the "look" but that's probably not what you're looking for)

  • @danielfirdaus

    I like the color grading in this video. So moody.
    By any chance, why does telephoto lens have slower aperture if it has longer focal length?
    On iPhone 11 Pro, it has 52 mm f/2.0, on iPhone 12 Pro Max, it has 65 mm f/2.2, and on iPhone 14 Pro, it has 77 mm f/2.8
    For everyday usage, it really struggles in low light

    • @torreymerritt
      @torreymerritt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback on the color grading!
      So I'm no expert in lenses by any means but typically longer focal lengths are pretty challenging to engineer to also have fast apertures while maintaining high image quality.
      And also, the aperture of a lens doesn't always tell the full story in terms of its capability. A lens with a slightly slower f-stop when paired with a larger sensor, with larger pixels, can often take a higher quality image than a smaller sensor paired with a slightly faster f-stop.
      I do agree that almost any phone on the market still struggles with low light telephoto capture, but things are improving and headed a decent direction!
