I'm back after a long break and wanted to upload a short video about my recent travels to Los Angeles and a spontaneous decision to drive to one of my favorite towns - Palm Springs. I brought my camera with me and one roll of Kodak Portra 400. I offer some thoughts on my break from making videos, and some ideas about why there is never a truly "bad day" or "failed day" of photography. A bit mor...

We also take a look at some quick composition and home scanning tips. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:23 Ma...
Kodak 250D - Slowing Down
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
This was my first time using Kodak 250D - which is 35mm motion picture film repackaged for photography. I have uploaded this video twice and never posted it because there isn't a tutorial involved, a review, etc, and the images aren't particularly groundbreaking - but I have to keep reminding myself that not every video on TH-cam as a small creator has to be a heavy hitter. One Location Video Portrait Challenge - Sony A7S III

I had a lot of fun on my first try at a "video portrait." All clips were shot at one location, a small greenhouse and backyard spot in Seattle, Washington. There are some videographers that really excel at this style of video and I felt inspired to give it a try. All in all, I would say making something like this is excellent practice and something I would love to do more of. Shot on the Sony A...

iPhone 14 Pro - Two Weeks Photographer's Review
มุมมอง 204K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I wanted to make a bit different video than my typical film photography and portrait-oriented videos, so when I got the new iPhone 14 Pro a few weeks ago, it was the perfect excuse to do my own version of a tech/product review. First Time Shooting Film with Flash - Kodak Portra 400
มุมมอง 13K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I recently got back from an amazing trip to Berlin, Germany where I shot almost exclusively on 35mm film. This was my 8th shoot in 7 days and I happened to use 35mm film with flash/strobe, which I had never done before but ultimately decided doesn't need to be scary or intimidating! I cover keeping things simple with just a one-light setup, and a few techniques for acquiring accurate exposure. ...

Based on your colormanagemnet with CSTs, what Project settings do you use for Timeline color space, and output color space? Do you grade on your mac display or something else?
Very informative, thank you! Would love to see a deep-dive into some examples, on how you take a RAW, apply these profiles, and the adjustments you make after that! Also, have you tried Really Nice Images (RNI) presets/profiles? I am curious to see if you have tried those, and how they compare to Cobalt.
This is just right. Please, no camera review, no gear review, no sermons about cinematic lenses or other nonsense that 90% of Y.T bloggers talk about. A film camera, no matter how baisc, cheap, expensive or sophisticated is nothing but a black box with two primary functions, and perhaps only two functions. To advance the film reliably and flat, and to operate the shutter mechanism. The rest is up to the photographer, his knowledge, his skill and his artistic vision. You have done a great job. Kudos to you but please no gear reviews, no Fuji film simulation malarky etc, etc, etc.
I'm glad you liked the video. I am going to be posting gear reviews, though. If you don't like that content, no worries at all you can simply refrain from watching.
@@torreymerritt I am sad to hear that. You have to do what you think is corrcet for your channel.
What's the music at 4:33? Amazing photos by the way! and thanks for explaination working with strobes+film.

Hello, você edita suas fotos no davince resolve??
awesome work brother

Interesting video, thank you for posting. Would be interested to know more about the location/direction etc of the light and strobe. Beautiful shots. The minimalistic lighting really accentuates the naturalistic look on film I think.
I can't see the ICC's after install.
Have you contacted their customer support? Sorry that you’re having trouble!
Hey Torrey, do you still use the a7riii for digital photos? Or is it Fujifilm already?
I have switched to Fuij but I'm actually considering changing my setup again already. I have the GFX 50s ii but it is proving to be unreliably and possibly just too slow when I need to shoot digital instead of film
@@torreymerritt Interesting. So back to Sony?
@@alexandernordic8551 Not yet, I'm going to try a software update for the GFX but if that doesn't work I'll probably try the XT5 next
Why do you prefer capture one over lightroom? love your videos
When I switched over to Capture One a few years ago, it was clearly the better software at that point in my opinion but that gap has closed a bit in recent years! I really don't think you can go wrong with either, but maybe sometime I can make a comparison video!
Amazing shots man great vid
Glad you like it man, coming out with a follow up video on Dehancer soon
Everyone who reviews Cobalt Image profiles on TH-cam has gotten the profiles without spending a dime. It's hard to find a review by someone who actually spent the considerable cost on it, still thinking it's worth it. I am so on the fence with this.
Nice and clean . One thing only . The most important thing is to know if the film is negative in order to print correctly . A Kodak Ektar would never be printed on a 2383 or 3513 as they are for motion pictures prints. The most important thing is of course the looks but I think , it’s a good thing to make a video regarding film , negative , positive , motion picture , stock etc cause all this will make much more sense for someone who is just starting to use film emulation . The process that film goes through , the print lights (color head) and so on . Then you will be able to unleash the full potential of the plugin ! You might wanna have for example 2 instances of Dehancer , one for stock and print and one only for grain , or you might wanna go to cineon and then finish it with davinci’s stock 2383 which is also great if you use it with a node together in compound (cst 709-cineon+2383 davinci film look). Many many options and decisions but in my opinion the first thing to do is learn how film works in real life and then try to emulate it , and that’s why the TH-cam community is such a great place to start ! Peace 🙏
The way you present this video is definitely different compared to other review videos. I love it man. Your style of making these videos are something worth mentioning. Keep it up 😊
Thanks so much for watching the channel! I’m excited to get back to more TH-cam to end 2024
Beautifully done mate!

I'm not expecting this video to get a lot of views, but my buddy and I went out the other evening and filmed this Nike Running spec and wanted to upload it. I'd be happy to provide an editing breakdown and shoot an overview if enough people are interested. Cheers!

Fantastic video! I’m curious, which film stock did you use? I'm on a very similar journey and your work is truly inspiring. Keep up the amazing videos and photography. I loved your perspective that there’s no such thing as a failed day when photographing.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and the overall message!! And yes everything was captured on Portra 400! Also thank you 🙏🏼
love it
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time!
just got my iphone 14 pro last week😊
Congrats on the 14 Pro! Hope you enjoy it!
I know you’ve gone through a breakdown with DaVinci and Dehancer. But I literally would love to see much more of your grading process. I don’t need a flashy TH-cam video, I would literally just love a screen recording session. Please get in touch - Jerry
Hi Jerry and thanks for the kind comment, is there anything specific within color grading that you’d like to learn about specifically? So much of a successful grade is in the source material or footage. In this instance, the raw beauty of the Oregon coast is doing 85% of the work for the success of the grade (in my opinion). But there are certainly ideas or philosophies within color grading that can still be enormously helpful. I’d love to know if you have any specific challenges you’re facing and maybe I can address them in a future video
Your color grading is so on point. Tastefully Classy. Do you have any color grading tutorials like this?? Would love to learn much more!!!
Hey! It’s been great to get some decent feedback on my grading videos. I think enough people have shown interest that it’s time to record a new one pretty soon. I’ve got some videos in the works based on film photography but I’d love to upload a color grading video soon after!
I love the idea of their approach. Their website is really challenging, and their presets require the base pacakge + whatever film emulation stock. I wouldn't mind, but a bit expensive. Might still have to check it out. Maybe they'll have a sale?
Hey man I’d give them an email if you have any spare time just lending your thoughts on their website, etc. I get the feeling they are great at the technical and nerdy stuff but maybe not super great at web design or marketing. I definitely agree though, they could use a website refresh!
@@torreymerritt Just took a look at their website. It definitely needs a refresh and clearer explanations!
Your grades are amazing man, everything looked so cool. Would love to see full workflow!
Appreciate the feedback man! This was one of my better performing videos and I’ve had similar comments so I think an update video might be a great addition to tackle soon
continue making more videos like this, very useful
Thanks for the comment! I’ve taken a big break from this platform and I kind of regret not posting more. I’m going to aim to get some new stuff up. It will likely be a few film photography based videos but then I’d love to circle back to color grading as well. I’ll be brainstorming in the next week or so!
can you tell the white balance settings you had in your camera for the first blue color tone video?
Sure! It wouldn’t have been below about 5400 kelvin. And specifically, that’s due to the fact that the environment was truly very very blue already but still a really good question. If you’re trying to sell that blue hour look and it’s not a very blue environment you can definitely cheat a bit with white balance. I will say that as long as you are shooting on a camera that records 10 bit, there’s a good amount of flex in the grade.
Good day. At the tail end of your node tree, if you did not use the Lut before connecting to Dehancer, then what would your CST have for it's output gamma and color space (details)?
Sorry for the late reply on this question! I do believe Dehancer will accept quite a few incoming color spaces and gammas so that shouldn’t be a huge problem to convert your working space into Dehancer for output. I think I’m going to do an update on this video in the next month or so though, so stay tuned!
You guys did a superb shoot!! Beautiful images even though I am more of FP4 vs the higher grain of HP5. XLNT work by both of you. Thank you!
So glad you liked the video! Cheers!
Look into the Archetype Process film simulations. They have a profile/preset for every film stock's exposure level, development, film scanner, and even scanning settings.
Can you compare with the 14 pro/ 14max?
I wish I still had my 14 Pro, that would be a great comparison!
Great video Torrey!
Thanks so much!
How do you feel these compare to Mastin Labs?
You know what I've never actually used Mastin Labs but I'd love to compare them sometime! I should see if Mastin might want to do a review video, no idea if they would but possibly worth a try!
I was considering a zve1 but I may just upgrade my iPhone 14 to 15 pro for the log. Where do I start to get the images you had for the Pacific Northwest ? Dehancer? What about ND ? Also curious how skin tones are.
Cool atmosphere, nice color grading, good camera movements and well edited - very good
So glad you liked it, thank you!
This video is gold, keep it up
So glad you enjoyed it! I've sadly been too busy the last few months to dedicate time to TH-cam but I'm hoping to return to making videos as soon as I can
@@torreymerrittTH-cam is very time consuming, don't worry too much. Plus your content is high-quality and requires even more time to create it. I'll be subscribed anyway because channels like this need all the support 👏👏
@@kikevigp Means a ton!! These kinds of comments are what inspire me. Excited to have you along!
Honestly your pictures need to be on their preset page. MUCH better than their examples which is why they are under the radar.
That's very kind of you! I do think it could be possible for them to get some fresh images on their website! We all need that every once and a while I know I'm constantly working to update my portfolio haha
I can’t find the actual Portra presets on Lightroom after I import them. I’m only seeing the adjustments presets. Any reason why I’m experiencing this?
Thanks for this.
My pleasure!
This was perfect thank you. I have an upcoming boudoir shoot in an old chapel which is quite dimly lit and wanted to shoot a roll of HP5 +1 and a roll of Portra 800 as well as my usual digital. Great model ,wardrobe and poses, well done, I like your style.

How are you exposing this is insane bro
Finally someone that shows the color management! This is the dehancer tutorial I've been looking for
So glad to hear that! There are some really good Dehancer tutorials out there so glad you found this one helpful!
HP5 Plus can be almost as fine fine grain as FP4 or exhibit obvious graininess. It all depends on the exposure and the processing. It is as versatile a film that exists. FWIW, I loved the photos of the young lady. It suited the mood and her looks and expressions. Job well done.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I have been told by a few other people how much of a difference processing can make on this film. I'd love to revisit it with another portrait project and use a new lab.
I have been using film for nearly 46 years. It used to be exclusively Kodak, Panatomic -X, Plus X Pan and Tri-X and then the original line of TMax. I also use Ilford quite a lot recently. Last week I developed a roll of HP5 Plus rated @ iso 400 in Atomal 49 1+1. I use a Nikon Coolscan ED and this scanner is merciless on showing the grain of the film or any other artefacts. Even after extensive post processing the grain is not ' in your face ' @ pixel level. The negatives develop quite ' flat ' so they need a bit of work to bring out detail and contrast, but for my line of photography, landscape/cityscape that is fine. @@torreymerritt
Absolutely. The processing and the choice of the developer are the main factors in how the film looks which questions the validity of all those silly film simulation presets.
