I just did another playthrough of this game and yes this game definitely holds up along with Miles Morales it's by far one of my favorite superhero games and I'm looking forward to Spider Man 2 and what insomniac is doing with Wolverine. I think Spider man 2 may be a contender of my GOTY because everything I have seen so far hasn't disappoint me. Great video by way J ;3
I completed SM2018 and DLCs like around, idk, twelve times? On PS4, PS5 and PC, did Platinum on all platforms and i always, ALWAYS , felt like i'm having fun. Different gadgets, powers, it all makes you want to try new techniques. And sure, in the end u actually go with what suits yours tastes the most but even then - it's just still fun. Swinging on webs throughout New York is just amazing feeling. You swing above people's heads and cars and do tricks and zip from one point to another - it's magic. Traversal is pulling up this already solid game and now, week before SM2, i only wish Spidey's speed during swinging would be a bit higher (like miles) but it's something i can live with (especially on PC, mods to the rescue) I love Spider-Man 2018. It was my first game on first big Sony's console, being PS4 Pro, which i bought with my own money as my early birthday present and i platinumed it at my birthday. My favorite Spidey, always 👍
I'm not a superhero fan and I played this last year on PS4. I was completely blown away with it and had such a good time. It does Go on a bit too long with some filler missions though. I was too worn out by the end to play the DLC.
Spider-Man is such a spectacular game and in just a week we’re gonna get an amazing sequel and we probably won’t need to wait that long for another marvel insomniac game since they’re making the Wolverine game which I have no doubts is gonna be uncanny
The numerous backpacks were explained after collecting the Fisk trophy from one of them - as per winning a contest he was awarded free backbacks for life as his prize. Makes complete sense
I just preordered Spider-Man 2 last night. I just got a ps5 last month specifically 4 Spider-Man 2. Ive been playing the remaster for the 1st time on ps5. It was already dope on ps4 but its even better on ps5. Ive completed the main story & was having so much fun playing the dlc last night. I got so many games stacked up to play
Just finished a hitless run of the game including dlc and man, you definitely feel the difficulty, I’d definitely recommend it as a challenge if your looking for a more difficult experience that isn’t a higher difficulty, you really have to use all of your abilities to your advantage
Don’t think I could pull off a hitless, but you’re right about using all of the gadgets and experiment with load-outs to optimize your experience. I remember going through on Ultimate difficulty and barely at the end when I was battling Olympus Hammerhead, I found an OP load out that literally made me say “why didn’t I do this the whole game? In freaking unstoppable!”😂
Fun thing you missed they actually explain the backpack thing he won a life time supply of backpacks from a science competition if I remember correctly. It’s in one of the items in the backpacks where he says it
For someone who grew up with Spider Man 2 (2004) and Spider Man PS1, I had a blast playing Spider Man PS4. After all, Spidey is my favourite comic book hero ever and I had fond memories growing up and playing his various games along with his films. PS4 managed to just managed to entice me with such a great story, outstanding graphics, and a brilliant voice cast. I platinumed both the first game on both PS4 and PS5… alongside Miles Morales. With only a week away from Spider Man 2… I have full confidence in saying… this about to be the most hyped sequel of the year. Also J, I would actually recommend doing an entire Spider Man marathon covering all his 3D games since they’re quite good… and if you enjoyed the web slinger’s game here… you might get a kick out of a few other of his games :)
The advance suit is kinda my favorite suit now plus the raimi suit is cool but the advance suit has the blue with the orange and white just goes so well together
Regarding the puzzles, I think it’s a matter of different people wanting different things, rather than a lack of confidence. Some people like puzzles, others don’t. They’re there if you want them, and if you don’t, you can skip them. It’s that simple. I don’t really see it as that big of a deal. I’m not a puzzle guy. I always skip them, but I know plenty of people who love them and complete them all every playthrough.
I think in the game they explain the backpacks were all science awards in middle school and high school, which ngl for my science award I got a trophy and a subway sandwich. Wish I got a backpack
20:47 this is by and large the most overblown criticism of the game. These are always so enjoyable because the characters are so good and it helps do a lot of the worldbuilding. And it's really fun to zoom through them. Mary Jane's penthouse segment is easily the longest and it's still only 10-15 minutes. They can usually be completed in about 3 minutes apiece. They're exactly as long as you want to make them, and I find them completely harmless additions to the game and it helps to ground the story really well. If it were an even 50/50 split between MJ/Miles and Spider-Man, now THAT would be a problem, but it's really at most 10/90. It's such a non-issue imo. Not trying to say it's a masterpiece in game design, just saying it is not a net negative like most claim it is.
I love this Spider-Man game. It's one of the best experiences when it comes to playing as Spidey, and it tells a compelling story that can be dramatic while still managing to be fun and lighthearted when it matters. That's something many Spider-Man stories either lack or don't balance properly (comics can be a downer, shows like Ultimate take the humour too far, etc.). The only real big thing missing from this game was my favourite character, Venom, which makes me all the more hyped for the sequel. ^^
11:36 there's a hilarious explanation for that, one of the backpack collectibles is an award by the fisk fundation and when you hear the explantion he said that aside from the price money he recived and enless supply of backpacks.
I recently played it to hype up for the sequel coming out, and minus a few nitpicks (screwball and the MJ & Miles missions) I still love this game to death
Only gameplay problems are a lack of true momentum and speed while swinging. Along with it being a lil too easy in my opinion due to the lack of physics. Additionally the combat while good definitely needs improving and more depth. Good thing the second (or third whatever) looks like it fixed all that. Hype hype hype hype
I love this game despite its apparent flaws and it holds a special place in my heart, and I couldn't be happier than when I get back into this game from such a long time, there's a lot to love about this game and my favourite aspects of this game is his relationship with the city and many other characters and I especially love the emotional complexity that Peter has and it always feels very real,it quite literally doesn't even feel like acting it feels THAT real, this is an unpopular opinion but I actually really really like the sections where you play as Mary Jane despite the fact that many people feel it ruins the pacing, for me it doesn't coz it feels fresh and unique, it makes a really nice change to play someone without any superpowers, just a need to help the main protagonist in protecting the city, she's no billionaire, has no crazy gadgets or an out of this world ambition like any other superhero and that's exactly why I enjoy Mary Jane's sections within the game, she's ordinary with an extraordinary circle of friends that she works well with
Jesus Christ, yall are goddamn stupid. It's got some fucking flaws okay. It's got some really giant fucking flaws. You can't just say this is the best game ever cuz it's not. Is it fun to play? Hell yeah, it's fun to play. Does it have a great story? Yes, does it have great acting? Absolutely is combat fun? Yes are there parts of the game when I want to throw my ps5 through the goddamn window and hit someone in the fucking face with it yes again.
Y'all need to stop acting like this is the best game ever made. Stop sucking Spider-Man's fucking dick open your goddamn eyes. You retarded motherfuckers and look at the real fucking problems
Spider-Man PS4 is why I got a PS4 years ago but I won't be getting a PS5 because Spider-Man 2 look of Mary Jane and the new game's portrayal of cops in the game but if those are minor like the black and gold suit in Miles game I might reconsider
I just played the remaster on PS5, and I’m about to play MM for the first time. It was even more fun than the first time playing it on PS4. I’m HYPE for the sequel.
So glad we finally got a video on this from you! On my subsequent playthroughs, I always skip the puzzles. Not too good, but I did then once on my first and that was enough Can’t wait for SM2!!
I recently played it for the first time last month when I got my first PS console and I’m going to play through each of them in order, I really enjoyed the game and I’m currently 100%ing it now but yeah the combat, swinging, story and SOME of the MJ/Miles missions were great! Cant way to play Miles Morales and 2
Peter having this many backpacks was explained in one of them Peter won fisk money but didn't want it so he agreed to have an unlimited backpack supply or smth like that xD
This game is famous for pushing the envelope of superhero games even higher after the Arkham games set that impossibly high bar. Not only did Spider-Man (2018) sell extremely well ( over 10M copies sold I believe) but it was just an all around great game. It had the graphics, gameplay, story, and acting. It was one of the games that defined PS4!
i'm playing it for the first time (well, not exactly; i tried it back when it released but didn't care much about it, and now gave it another shot), and i'm loving it! being fair, it's VERY AAA, the bloat bothers me a lot, but insomniac just got the juice when it comes to the traversal mechanics and the combat
I’m just about to go to school, so my dad won’t let me play the sequel yet, but this is the final day before I play Spider-Man two I am so excited because this game Spider-Man one was my favorite game of all time I have a feeling that is about to change but I still love this game. I will always love it.
It's weird. Cause I can go into this game and play the story no problem, I have a good time and it's like binging through a Spider-Man TV show with me in the driver's seat. But if I wanna just hop in and relax I struggle to play it cause Miles was so much better in its traversal. However I believe the same will happen to Miles. I'll most likely be able to go to Miles and the original to beat the story again for the billionth time, but free roaming in my free time I'll probably struggle to get into the traversal as opposed to Spider-Man 2. Insomniac are fantastic at enhancing previous experiences, however it's to their predecessors detriment. But I'll give them this, at least their games are still revisitable cause the story and side stories (especially Tombstone) are fun as all hell. I struggle to play plenty of early games in a series cause of its sequels, ans my personal favourite examples are the Arkham games. Arkham Knight is the best in gameplay and side content, but the main story kinda blows. But I really struggle to just pick up and play Assylum, City or Origins, I can only really play those if I'm grinding the story. Or another example being GTA 3&VC, like why would I play this obviously inferior game in my spare time to relax when I could just play a better game like 4, 5 or San Andreas. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will definitely do this to me. The only way I'll ever play another previous Insomniac Spider-Man game in my spare time is if someone else is on the PS5 and the PC releases are all I have 😂
Sure does. I am playing through it again actually really still fun :) Also, to add to my comment, I beat spider-man 2000 yesterday(I wanted to make sure my copy I got 23 - Years ago still works, and I had fun & ended up beating it. It really deserves a good remaster. It sucks you can’t control the camera & that it’s shorter than I’d like it to be. 3 - Hours is still fair though. Playing it is like playing a Comic Book opposed to just a great game.
my biggest issue with this game is in the stealth you just use the perches and beams like Batman would. Stealth seems like the only place in the game that proper wall crawling could be utilized because outside of that you'd just wall run, but instead you do exactly what batman could do with some other gadgets. May be small but wallcrawling is iconic to the character and it could've been integral to the game and helped it standout more from arkham. Edit: actually a new face changing with every release is my biggest issue with the game, what the fuck insomniac
This title looks amazing and I do heavily enjoy the Tobey Maguire Suit a lot. It is great to see how amazing this title is, especially with all the attention it was given at the time.
Swinging simplicity obviously has its perks, and the system is delightful enough to not complain too much about the simplicity of the system, but the challenge some of the other games offer have their perks too. It's like choosing between two different delicious meals, depends on what you're in the mood for.
Random, he didn't buy the 55 back packs. He won some kind of Mr. Fisk competition thing in High School and the reward was a lifetime supply of bags and prize money but he declined the money.
Played this recently and I had a blast! This is a game that just begs to be explored and tells a good enough story to keep people hooked, in my opinion it's the best spiderman game! Great review!
Performance RT. That's the only way to play. The higher frame rate is SO satisfying, but the raytracing REALLY brings the city to life. Especially at night. I just those spiderman 2 launches with the mode... or they patch it in later.
This is gonna be a comment about the faces, and no, not about Peters face being changed for the PS5 remaster. So growing up during the N64 era 3D gaming has been a natural part of my life, I know peers who despite being the same age hate 3D and can't stand looking at it and while I accepted that differing viewpoint I never thought I would understand it...until the faces of 8th generation gaming. I don't know why, but with the push for photo-realism in games it's become incredibly hard for me to look at the characters during cutscenes (which is a good chunk of time nowadays). When this wasn't a problem during the PS3/360 era, and now that's just the norm with Series SX/PS5. Just something about them makes me really uncomfortable looking at nearly human faces.
It still does I enjoy playing it I just played it again can’t wait for spiderman 2 got the ps5 spiderman edition I’m really hyped and happy hope everybody enjoys it
I'm late with playing this game so i'm watching reviews to see if other people had the same criticisms. I would say this game is good and fun but there are a couple minor things that make big impacts. I'm glad the video mentioned the ease of web swinging. The thing nobody ever mentions 6:21 is that even if you don't "jump" off the web and you continue to hold down the R2 button you will automatically shoot another web. I actually really dislike this because its essentially playing it for you. As the video mentions you don't stop dead when you land on a building you keep running (but what if you wanted to stop). I also really dislike this because instead of automatically sticking to walls you have to press X to shoot a web to the wall to then stick. Which leads to wall climbing. Regular wall climbing is so slow its only useful for the stealth moments in the game. If you try to move faster it automatically makes you wall run. I dislike this a lot because a huge part of spider man is sticking to and climbing walls. What i would of wished is that holding R2 would make you climb walls faster and if they really wanted to include wall running then perhaps double tapping and holding R2 would make you wall run. The rest of my criticisms align with the videos for the most part such as the very basic combat system and ease of stealth missions. The only extra i would add is personally i'm not a fan of this new era stuff they added. Mary Jane was a model and actress let her be that. If you really wanted a woman journalist just invent another character instead of making Mary Jane a journalist. Lastly, peter cooking for mary jane...... stop pushing this new era stuff in "fictional reality" neither one of them would of been cooking they would have ordered pizza or chinese food lol. Again overall still a good game i wouldn't say to let these criticisms stop you from playing it but i would say it stops it from being a 10/10 that i see so many people describe it as.
They explain the sheer number backpacks in one of the 50+ collectibles and you have to listen to the voice bit paired with it. I swear, J, did you even play the game?! /s

5 years. My god i remember the first trailer and waiting a crap ton for it.
Traversal is pulling up this already solid game and now, week before SM2, i only wish Spidey's speed during swinging would be a bit higher (like miles) but it's something i can live with (especially on PC, mods to the rescue)
I love Spider-Man 2018. It was my first game on first big Sony's console, being PS4 Pro, which i bought with my own money as my early birthday present and i platinumed it at my birthday. My favorite Spidey, always 👍
just found your page and it’s a gold mine. you make great videos i’m so excited to keep watching
I'm not a superhero fan and I played this last year on PS4. I was completely blown away with it and had such a good time. It does Go on a bit too long with some filler missions though. I was too worn out by the end to play the DLC.
The second game doesn't have filler missions/ side missions. They improved and kept things lean.
@@zooomthesquirrel3707yeah but the boss fights are cancerous.
@@DevotedChristianity 👍
I wish people actually reviewed the ps4 version of the game
I literally just played it again earlier, IMO it's still the best Spider-Man game
Has it been 5 years dang time flies 😔 😳
Spider-Man is such a spectacular game and in just a week we’re gonna get an amazing sequel and we probably won’t need to wait that long for another marvel insomniac game since they’re making the Wolverine game which I have no doubts is gonna be uncanny
I still can’t stop playing this game. It’s so much fun.
Spider-Man PS4 is ranked way high as one of the best Spider-Man games out there. They took the formula of the character and made it work.
Spiderman was what made me pull the trigger on a PS4, I had a nice enough PC since 2014, but got ps4-pro on 2018 to play this and god of war
I'm replaying it now and still love it
I play this game at least once a year since it came out. It’s still a really good story and fun experience.
I waited years for this game to come to PC and it did not disappoint. The answer for me is an undoubtedly Yes
Five years ago, that's crazy, I swear it came out last year.
It will make me sad that if Spider Man goes into the Batman arkham trail, it has to end someday. But they will make more IP's.
The advance suit is kinda my favorite suit now plus the raimi suit is cool but the advance suit has the blue with the orange and white just goes so well together
how has it beein five years already???? i actually comletred the final dlc about twoi hours ago i cant wait for part two
Regarding the puzzles, I think it’s a matter of different people wanting different things, rather than a lack of confidence. Some people like puzzles, others don’t. They’re there if you want them, and if you don’t, you can skip them. It’s that simple.
I don’t really see it as that big of a deal. I’m not a puzzle guy. I always skip them, but I know plenty of people who love them and complete them all every playthrough.
I finished replaying the games yesterday and for sure it does hold up ( peter got a life time supply of bagpacks lol)
I think in the game they explain the backpacks were all science awards in middle school and high school, which ngl for my science award I got a trophy and a subway sandwich. Wish I got a backpack
Am i the only who feels the Remastered version of Spider-Man 2018 on PS5 looks better than Spider-Man 2?
No. I completely agree with that, and many others do too.
That ultimate Spider-Man music tho
in my opinion gameplay is a 6, swinging upgrades the game to a 7 and the story upgrades it to a 9
Ratchet and Clank is my favorite gaming franchise of all time.
I can't believe its been 5 years already... Ig the Miles Morales game made it seem not that long ago
11:36 there's a hilarious explanation for that, one of the backpack collectibles is an award by the fisk fundation and when you hear the explantion he said that aside from the price money he recived and enless supply of backpacks.
Loved Spider-Man 2018, loved Miles Morales, and can't wait to play the sequel. Great video as usual!
I just started to play this game today for the first time today I’m excepted to see what the hype is about
No fucking way was it 5 years ago…*checks date* fuck
I recently played it to hype up for the sequel coming out, and minus a few nitpicks (screwball and the MJ & Miles missions) I still love this game to death
Still the best spider man ever made
Only gameplay problems are a lack of true momentum and speed while swinging.
You retarded motherfuckers and look at the real fucking problems
dear god, just looking at the gameplay makes it seem so slow nowadays after playing sm2 lol
Spider-Man PS4 is why I got a PS4 years ago but I won't be getting a PS5 because Spider-Man 2 look of Mary Jane and the new game's portrayal of cops in the game but if those are minor like the black and gold suit in Miles game I might reconsider
What's wrong with the cops
@@Lonelysum I heard that the game is harsh towards cops or downplays helping cops
@@TomMcD71 wow didn't where can I check it out
Before watching the video, im gonna say that it doesn't hold up in the gameplay department but absolutely CARRIES with story
I just played the remaster on PS5, and I’m about to play MM for the first time. It was even more fun than the first time playing it on PS4. I’m HYPE for the sequel.
So glad we finally got a video on this from you!
On my subsequent playthroughs, I always skip the puzzles. Not too good, but I did then once on my first and that was enough
Can’t wait for SM2!!
I recently played it for the first time last month when I got my first PS console and I’m going to play through each of them in order, I really enjoyed the game and I’m currently 100%ing it now but yeah the combat, swinging, story and SOME of the MJ/Miles missions were great! Cant way to play Miles Morales and 2
Peter having this many backpacks was explained in one of them
Peter won fisk money but didn't want it so he agreed to have an unlimited backpack supply or smth like that xD
There’s not a single thing this game does better than the Arkham games
As someone who’s about to finish it on PS4 for the first time, yes. This game is amazing! I hate fighting the Sable soldiers though. lol
i'm playing it for the first time (well, not exactly; i tried it back when it released but didn't care much about it, and now gave it another shot), and i'm loving it! being fair, it's VERY AAA, the bloat bothers me a lot, but insomniac just got the juice when it comes to the traversal mechanics and the combat
The only way I'll ever play another previous Insomniac Spider-Man game in my spare time is if someone else is on the PS5 and the PC releases are all I have 😂
Around 11:45 if u go through the backpacks there is one where peter won something and got a lifetime of backpacks
Sure does. I am playing through it again actually really still fun :)
Also, to add to my comment, I beat spider-man 2000 yesterday(I wanted to make sure my copy I got 23 - Years ago still works, and I had fun & ended up beating it. It really deserves a good remaster. It sucks you can’t control the camera & that it’s shorter than I’d like it to be. 3 - Hours is still fair though. Playing it is like playing a Comic Book opposed to just a great game.
This review really makes you feel like Spider-Man.
my biggest issue with this game is in the stealth you just use the perches and beams like Batman would.
He swings around the city with the exaggerated swagger of a black teen
Swinging simplicity obviously has its perks, and the system is delightful enough to not complain too much about the simplicity of the system, but the challenge some of the other games offer have their perks too. It's like choosing between two different delicious meals, depends on what you're in the mood for.
Random, he didn't buy the 55 back packs. He won some kind of Mr. Fisk competition thing in High School and the reward was a lifetime supply of bags and prize money but he declined the money.
22:50 damn…I’m aboutta play some Spider-Man right now
i beat this game 9 times when i was 9 and then i
was 10 and beat the game 12 times it was fun
I really was hoping you would make this video, and now it exists. Now I'm gonna patiently wait for you to do Classic MegaMan.
There's a reason it has become one of my favorite games ever, it also has the best Spider-Man story.
My guy i'm telling you from now, if you start a spider man game series retrospective of all the main 3d games, i'm watchin all of it.
There was a throwaway line in the game where Peter mentions he got a lifetime supply of backpacks from some science contest he won as a student.
Played this recently and I had a blast! This is a game that just begs to be explored and tells a good enough story to keep people hooked, in my opinion it's the best spiderman game! Great review!
I remember it dropping around the same time as RDR2 so I enjoyed it but took a long break in the middle of the story.
About the backpacks…there’s something Spider-Man says about winning a lifetime supply of backpacks from some Kingpin fundraiser lol
If you paid attention to collecting the backpacks you would know that he won a lifetime supply of backpacks from the Wilson Fisk science fair
Surprised you didn't mention Ultimate Spider-man
They explain the sheer number backpacks in one of the 50+ collectibles and you have to listen to the voice bit paired with it. I swear, J, did you even play the game?! /s
