What an amazing video for such an amazing game. I've loved Spider-Man my whole life and nothing could've prepared me for Insomniac's Spider-Man. I can't remember the last time a game had me smiling like a little kid, and then minutes later it can have me in tears. This is my favourite version of Spider-Man ever, and this video really encapsulated everything I love about this game and this character.

Just subbed, for me the first game I finished was Jak & Daxter, then Spiderman 2, then The Last of Us, then Spiderman PS4, I cried at the end of both of the final 2 game's, because of how intense and story driven they were, both games are for me, considered 2 of the best game's I've ever played, and yes, also, I loved what TLOU PT. 2 did with the story and characters, for me, they took a chance, did something unexpected and gave us 2 points of view on 1 intertwined story, and I personally thought they nailed it, tho, I understand why it wasn't some people's cup of tea. 💯🙂

One of the most beautiful videos I've ever watched. No exaggeration.
I'm a 7th grade ELA teacher, and I'm still living in my head like I can save everyone. It's so hard to let any of them go, man. It's so hard to see them fail after all of the time we've spent together, helping each other become better people. To see them get suspended, expelled, or killed. I always feel like it's my fault. Like I could have done more. Sometimes I wish I could swing from rooftops, saving them all, but it's not my fault. I have to remind myself.

There is no cap when i say this, but i have a great feeling that Spider-Man 2 will give us the most legendary "Black Spider-Man" aka "The Black Suit" storyline ever told within our screens. The one other thing I really loved about this game is how they even humanized Norman Osborn of all people. In the comics and for the most part, the movie, Norman Osborn is just a selfish arrogant prick who ruins people's lives just because he can. He's just a scumbag through and through.
But not here. Norman's own evil deeds were never out of genuine hatred or glee in the suffering of the innocent, while it may have turned into that over time. It all really started out of grief, and love. Losing his wife took a huge toll on Norman, it broke him. Seeing that his son Harry had the same terminal illness was something he was not willing to live through again. In a way, Norman, like Peter, took the blame on himself for it. But never again. He was going to play dirty to save his son because he had had enough. He was pushed to the point of desperation that he was willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus, including Otto, Li, and many more, just if it meant that he could give his son another chance at life. It's not something I excuse, but it is something I understand.
After all, quoting Mimir from God of War, "The death of a child is not something a parent gets over easily." And Norman is a prime example of that.
I dunno about you, but I don't really like Goblin as a character in the comics cuz he was so one-note. It's fun at first but then it got stale. Making him a broken man just trying to save the one thing he loves adds so much context to everything he does. Cuz then you realize. If you're going to face off Norman, it means you endanger the chances of Harry having a future.

    • @youngspecial64
      @youngspecial64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Beautifully said brother, Beautifully said but that honestly gives me a great amount of faith that harry wont be venom within the sequel. It depends really, but i do wonder of how they'll handle harry....i honestly see them killing him off within the first half of the story. I picture harry as the catalyst of bringing the symbiote into the world, and ofcourse lead to peter gaining the symbiote! But why i believe harry could die early is clearly within the settlement of actually sending norman into the deep end on walking towards the path of madness and insanity.....but it'll also lead to peter's *will* being broken. Peter has already gone through enough with otto turning towards the path of evil, then witnessing the death of aunt may. If he looses a freind that was kinda a brother to him, when he never had siblings within his life....that'll put peter within a dark spot and place. And if the symbiote comes to peter when he's at a place for needing someone to put him together; man the potential is there.

      @rhetiq9989 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It just didn't connect with me enough regarding Norman's reasonings for his decisions and behaviour bcs while the game did ask us to figure it out ourselves, we never actually got to explore that complexity through Norman's perspective first hand and I think part of it is bcs they're saving it for future games. Once Harry is out and plays a direct role in the story, Norman has no choice but to play an even bigger part in the story. That's where we'll learn what truly makes Norman tick bcs Harry is the key to unlocking the human in Norman, this cold and calculating corporate man who seemingly does things for his personal gain in the eyes of others who don't truly know him. This game has only done not much but to set up Norman's bigger role in future games, but not much is still more than what you say about him in the comics

Spider-man taught me to be a hero. Growing up he was a primary role model. Watching him have to make hard decisions, sacrificing what he wanted most, so that he could save the day because he knew he had to. Sure he could have looked away and gone after what he wanted...but then someone else would lose their "Uncle Ben", and he couldn't live with that. I grew up watching and reading his stories, and his choices to do the right thing even at his detriment are the reason I have become the man I am today. Doing what I can for my family, or giving up that extra couple hours of sleep I could have used so I can stay up talking with a friend when they are breaking down...Spider-man taught me to be a hero...and this game perfectly captured that essence and gave one more reminder of how to keep going when things don't pan out because you did the right thing. Take pride in doing your best, because it's the only thing we can all do.
You did amazing on this video dude, thank you for putting in that effort and sharing this with all of us.

This is one of two video games that have ever made me cry. The first was The Last of Us. The second was this game. It's ending is such a slap in the face first you have Peter confronting Doc Ock not as Spider-Man but as himself as the person who loved Otto like he was a father as the person he wanted to be like one day. That ripped out my heart. It left my hands shaking it was just good. Then the scene with Peter once again having to make a choice. This one even worse than with Otto. Save his last living relative or save the city. This choice is just so messed up when you really, REALLY stop to think about it. All his life he's been unable to save his family members. His parents, his uncle.. and in this moment he is holding in his hands the one thing that can save his Aunt. All those other times he's been powerless to do anything. But this time was time was different he could do something.. but in doing so he would be dooming thousands maybe tens of thousands to die. It's literally a no win situation for Spider-Man, forr Peter. That broke my heart. Just thinking about ever having to make a choice like makes me feel dead inside. Would I save the person who raised me, who I love, means everything to me.. or would I let that person die in order to thousands of strangers who will never truly appreciate what I gave up to save them. That is why this Spider-Man might be one of the greatest versions EVER!

Except there we already had a grounded foundation for the character and we knew he would happily sacrifice the world for Ellie because he was no hero. That was the first time I saved money for anything, and the first time I spent more than $40... (Sadly, now I don't and can't solve my problems throwing money at them, though)
Now, the first non pay-to-win game I finished on my own was Turok Evolution for the GBA and that was probably the origin of my tendency to finish a lot of games hoarding most of the resources and using just the basic weapons whenever I can get away with it.

I know I comment on all your videos but I just love your content!
I have a connection to this game being your first to finish. It's the first game I ever 100% completed. I just loved every second to the point that it felt as though it went by so fast, I found when I got to the end, I was so emotionally connected to this iteration of Peter and his story.
My favourite aspect of the story is where it strips Peter of his 2 "parent" figures (May and Otto) and then is himself thrust into that role for Miles, he has every right to leave Miles to figure out his abilities on his own but he doesn't and for me it is such a reflection on this iteration of Peters' need to help and be there for everyone despite his limitations.
    Great story telling.

I find May's death so perfect. Once, Peter did something that (in his eyes) killed his Uncle Ben. It was the selfish thing to do, it helped nobody, not even himself, and in the end, it killed his uncle because he was too spiteful at the world to care. Peter Parker wanted to let the world burn, but ended up killing his uncle instead. In that moment, he does the same thing again, he chooses to let her die, but he knows that it's the selfless thing to do. That he is making her AND Ben proud by doing what is right, even if it costs him.
Even if he loses her, it's a triumph, it's THE triumph, it's him learning that he always had the person in him who could do the right thing. He chooses the world this time, and even if it still costs her life, it's the right thing to do.

Yet again, you made me realize things I never considered before! The idea that Otto was always stringing Peter along the whole time is a really painful idea, especially when you see how much Peter admires and cares about Otto. I think Otto really DOES care about Peter and their friendship, especially taking into account the one recorded message he leaves for Peter once he gets started, but his lust for revenge and recognition was far stronger.
I can't wait for your next video!

I really appreciated your interpretation here. I've finished the story twice and I've read the art book, but I never really understood the story and characters quite at the same depth as you highlighted here in this video. I think you really made Octavius' character make sense as a broken, tragic, and manipulative character who doesn't let Peter see that side of him. Every time I turn back to this game I'm impressed with something new about it. Great work on this video!

I’m hoping this comment won’t be buried because I really wanna pour my heart out here. This discussion video has seriously changed the entire way that I view this game’s story, and what it represents to me as an individual. Before I was still on Peter’s side, seeing Doc Ock as a tragically fallen hero who was still a good man at heart. Understanding now, all of the signs that Otto truly knew that he was manipulating Peter, this game means something completely different to me now than just some amazingly well written piece of superhero fiction.
Here's a bit of personal backstory to explain why I relate to this game so much more now. I spent the first four years of my adult life in a long-term relationship with a narcissistic abuser, and nearly a year ago I left them in a spur-of-the-moment desperation to escape. While I was watching this video, I became increasingly more aware of the parallels between Peter & Otto’s relationship, and my own. I understand the rage that Peter feels at the end of the game. The realization that your perception of this person you love was a mask they wore to fool you. The confusion at the realization that their actions almost always had an ulterior motive of control or manipulation, causing you to doubt anything and everything they ever did with you. Even down to Otto’s constant appeals and compliments to Peter’s intelligence, that’s eerily similar to the love bombing that my abuser gave me to make me feel secure and happy with them once again.
The part of the video that truly hit me and made me realize how personally I can relate to this was the ending of Chapter 5. Your analysis of the final confrontation between Peter and Otto genuinely made me cry realizing that I understood exactly what Peter felt. Every single word hit me like a truck.
“Sometimes the best you can do, all you can do, is leave them behind. And it might hurt, it probably will hurt. You’ll be screaming at yourself to go back, you’ll be telling yourself that you’re a bad person for walking away. You’ll be telling yourself that they are your responsibility. But they aren’t. And you have to accept that”.
This single quote stirs in me some of the strongest emotions I’ve ever felt. As I was leaving my abuser, they cried to me that I was a bad person. I was tearing them apart, I was giving up on our relationship, I was hurting them more than anything had before. I was ultimately at fault for EVERYTHING because I was giving up on the idea of fixing things. When in reality, I had finally accepted that they were not going to fix their behavior, and despite years of manipulation on their end to make me believe so, it was not my responsibility. I had to claw my way away from them, the whole time crying and screaming at myself for being a terrible person to them, but ultimately in my heart doing what I knew was the best.
If you read through this comment, thank you for talking some time out of your day to read my essay. And thank you StoryStreet for making this video, it’s genuinely changed how I view this game. I’m going to replay it soon and I hope that this new perspective and personal tie to it makes the experience even more powerful than before.

when i finished this game three years ago i kinda whizzed through it and finished it quickly, but after watching the ending scenes i could see the struggles of the characters and the conflicts but i didn't really get why i wasn't feeling very sad at all by what was happening, especially in the otto and aunt may scenes, i knew that there was a deeper meaning to it all but for some reason i just couldn't wrap my head around why i wasn't feeling sad about what i was watching, but over time and through watching and consuming all kinds of spider-man content (especially video essays like this one) i slowly began to understand spider-man as a character much more and what makes him so special, so what you said at the end there about hoping that today's generation of kids will start to understand all of the themes behind what they're playing really resonated with me, because of this video i was finally able to watch the aunt may and otto scenes and realise why it's so effective and genuinely heartbreaking to watch, i cried like a baby
i swear i'll always love video essays or any any kind of content like this, because it opened my eyes and made me feel emotion through visual storytelling and art, bravo man!!

In many ways, Peter Parker is just as scarred and traumatized as Bruce Wayne. His unrealistic refusal to see evil in others is there because he’s been so hurt by what he thinks HE did to Uncle Ben, by the evil inside HIMSELF… that he’s disowning that part of himself, that *natural* part of himself, completely. He’s so terrified of giving in to even a tiny shard of selfishness, so terrified of that selfishness getting someone else killed, that he’d place the weight of the world on his shoulders rather than risking to face that pain again.

I really needed to hear what you had to say in this clip, having decided recently to quit a toxic relationship with somebody who took out all her problems and demons on me. I put up with it for years because I wanted to save her, and to be her hero, but ultimately had to face the fact that I can't. This whole sequence between Peter and Otto hits differently now, since the language Otto uses sounds like a dead ringer for stuff my ex would say. Peter made the right choice, like the character always does. And inspired by his example, so did I. Now it's been a week since the breakup, and I'm ready to swing into a more positive and hopeful future. ❤I dunno where I'd be without Spider-Man to look up to.

Loving the video man, I just wanna say this since I'm halfway in the vid. Peter's greatest strength and weakness is him being selfless. The way I see, grew up and got to know Spidey has stuck with me since I was a kid and the way Insomniac portrayed Spidey is damn good. Peter being selfless allowed him to prioritize other people than himself. In doing so he's been able to save many lives of the citizens of New York especially his choice at the very end of the main game. However by prioritizing them it lead him to neglect his personal life, his personal connections and relations. Otto is a good case for this... If Peter had been there by his side then he may have been able to work on the Neural Interface a tad bit more so that it won't affect the motor neurons or whatever neurons affecting Otto. Peter's character would have influenced Otto to stay on the right path and not the path of vengeance and anger... atleast that's how I can see it. But yeah it all ties back to what you said about the long term and short term consequences as well.
Hehe just wanted to say what's on my mind. New sub here bro!

Her father is an alcoholic who barely interacted with her on her childhood and always chose alcohol over her, even when he went to clinics he always snapped back. A few years ago he tried to get on line and my mom and I supported him, but last year he went back to drinking and now has prostate cancer and a tumor on his head due to falling drunk on the street, we're now just waiting for his release by death. My mom feels responsible for him, even then he never bought even a carton of milk for her, and even if she understands that's on him, it still hurts seeing his situation and the best you can do is let him die

I've been dealing with a lot of emotional family abuse after getting married, and I've had a lot of anger and anxiety about how my mother has treated me and my wife. Having a great childhood doesn't help the pain of realizing how manipulative and narcissistic my mother was underneath the picture I thought I knew. Such a simple line but there's so much meaning in it
27:11 Also a banger of a line, I mean damn. My god, you're like a poet sometimes dude.
    Huge side tangent btw:
21:09 This also *just* made me realize that Otto really genuinely could've been manipulating Peter the whole time. The worst part about this realization is that it hurts so much. Like Pete, we want to believe in the good in Otto, the man who wanted to make a difference. But that's because, like Peter: It's the only side we were shown. The only side he gave us. It's the part of himself he knew he needed to show Peter and the devs knew to show us for not only Peter to be by his side on every step of the way but us as well. It's when you realize it that everything starts to click. Of course Otto knew Peter was Spider-Man, of course he would use that, of course he would help him create a new suit, of course he would lend him a plan for a spidey gadget, of course with his newfound knowledge of Peter being Spider-Man would affirm his belief of his kind heart and seflessness even more, so of course he would tell Peter of his disorder, of course he would share personal stories and his personal life with him, of course he told Martin to openly state that Otto himself told them not to kill him so that the compassion Peter had for him even after the reveal was still there. Peter was his safety net. Someone who he knew he could use because he knew he was the one person who loved him unconditionally.
With every success they had, Peter smiled because he thought they were getting closer to changing the world. With every success they had, Octavius smiled because he knew he was getting closer to changing himself.

Nice video, this is a very amazing introspective for the game but here’s something I’ve recently been thinking about. I’m sure everyone knows that Otto came up with the concept for the Advanced Suit but I’m not sure if anyone understands the implications of that, considering at this point in the game, Peter still considers Otto a close friend and since canonically he wears the suit for the whole game, it pretty much means that he has a constant reminder of his former friend and his unfortunate downfall to (for a lack of a better term) a monster. And because of him wearing the Anti-Ock Suit and the end of the game and covering the Advanced Suit, it’s pretty much him needing to put all of his thoughts aside in order to defeat Doc Ock. But after the battle is over and the Advanced Suit shows, Peter finally is able to let it out and accept that the Advanced Suit is not only a reminder of Otto but something that can push him to Be Greater.

I've been following your channel since your first Planet of the Apes video and I'm just in awe everytime I watch one of your videos, I couldn't even describe how they make me feel but they're so well done and interesting and just heartwarming every time.. please never stop uploading content, I hope the next one will be about War for the PotA.
Also when I was a kid I mostly played on PS1 and GameBoy and I think one of the first game I've finished and replayed again and again was the og Spider-Man game on PS1, I don't remember a lot about it but I remember it was my first introduction to Spidey around the same time I first watched Spider-Man 1, been a Marvel fanboy ever since.

This was a beautiful video. You know it's a good watch when you're sitting in front of your tv in silence after it's over. And it's been like 5 mins since it ended. Wow

How did this man use a Spider-Man video to make me feel so emotional but also appreciate everything at the same time?

4:11 The heaving sighs, the cry, holy hell that broke me. And then to get the second punch of- well you all know, and if you don’t know PLEASE PLAY IT- left me in tears while the heroic music of the end credits played.

I’ve never seen a video that better encapsulates the reason as to why I love Spider-Man. A character that saved my life when I was in my formative years. He is truly a timeless character and you should be very proud with this video.
