Feeling pretty good about Michigan. I don't want to talk too much smack prior to playing out most meaningful games, but this looks like the best Michigan team of the last 3 years to me. Feel like we're being underestimated by a lot of cfb fans.
My favorite stat so far is the defense has almost scored as many touchdowns as allowed. They have given up 4 touchdowns but have scored 3 touchdowns. It is insane. I can remember two other takeaways that lead to easy touchdowns as well. But without an offensive Michigan 21 opponents 28
Beating a dead horse but none of their opponents so far are college playoff caliber. Therefor, Michigan is meeting expectation. The upcoming gauntlet of MSU, Maryland, Penn State and OSU will clear things up.
Spot on Joel! With the style of offence Michigan plays JJ seems to be the perfect fit as a player and a leader in the locker room. He has yet to play a 4th quarter this year and hes not complaining about it one bit. He sees the bigger picture for the team. He is a capable passer when needed, athletic enough to make a play out of nothing and a great teammate (though it seems). I also share the same question that you posed. There were a few games in 2022 that they trailed in to eventually end up pulling away and winning but the TCU game is exactly the situation you mentioned. That game seemed to be their worse case scenario come to life and yet they still had a chance to win at the end. Lots of football left to play and anything can happen. Go Blue
let's not forget. in the playoffs, corum was hurt, and Edwards had one hand. so he couldn't even do what he did best. a lot could be said about both of those guys two. both humble enough to share snaps and sit out in the 4th. it would be awesome if that humble attitude stays with the team when theses guys move on
JJ is one aspect but Michigan has a rotating RB's and defensive front 7. They all know everyone needs to play in order for team to get better. Wouldn't surprise me to see Michigan dip into transfer portal more in the future to mine players who are winning-first individuals to continue the culture they are building.

The consistency at Michigan is outstanding right now. No doubt. Just look at their scores and game stats. They are all pretty similar. They are getting coached up like no other team right now. They don't care about stats. They are committed and locked in to what Harbaugh's plan is for the program. They don't panic. Even when McCarthy threw three INT's against Bowling Green it never felt like it was putting the team in trouble. Those were his only turnovers all year, btw.
The scary thing for the rest of college football is that the starters don't even play a lot of the 4th quarter. They've played maybe 1 fourth quarter. Michigan is a dangerous team. That's why their my Natty Champs. #GOBLUE4LIFE
As a Michigan fan, what scares me the most is how early into this season the national praise is coming. It has always been a feature of this program - back to even Bo's teams - They are the quickest to start believing the hype and take their foot off the gas of any team in the nation.
Can't be talking national championship when you playing nobody right now, need yall to play a competitive ranked team first to see where yall at but Penn st coming first
Don't think that will happen. This team experienced that last year and knows what can happen if they show up unprepared. They are too veteran and too focused. They could drop a game to PSU or OSU, but it won't be because they took the foot off the gas.
When the first CFP rankings come out, y’all are going to be the #1 team which is perfect for us because we’ll use that extra motivation to stomp out Ole Miss in Athens.
Joel, its not Michigan's fault they played Minnesota and they should not be dropped to number two for it. I think you, like a lot of others, are letting last years Georgia team cloud your judgment somewhat. Michigan's starters are leaving the field in the 3rd quarter regularly because the games are over, that say's a lot about how good they are.
Michigan has gotten most of their roster into each game this year. Even the second and third stringers rarely make a mistake. That bodes well for next few years, after they send 15 players to the NFL in the next draft class.
This is how I'd describe to a fan of another what it's like to play Michigan this year... Their offense will consistently score points and not hurt themselves, while that's happening the defense will play bend don't break. By bend it means you'll get some yards but probably punt, by break it means you might get a FG....if you're super lucky a TD....this will continue until they have a 10 to 17 points lead......then your offense becomes one dimensional and then the game is OVER!
The best part is that I don't think we've been completely healthy, ever. Mason Graham had a standout game. WITH ONE HAND. And our defensive efficiency (yards given up per point gained by the opposing offense) is still RIDICULOUS.
Michigan is definitely faster than last year and the defense is suffocating. I anticipate them going to the Natty. Still a huge challenge to knock off Georgia.
JJ doesnt get the hype he deserves because they play such a complete game, and their competition hasnt been able to keep up. If he played the fourth quarter and the games were somewhat closer he could have C. Williams type stats. If they run the table and he stays the course they should truly consider him for heisman candidate
A lot of people don't mention this. Michigan is mostly made up of three star recruits. So it goes to show you, that you don't need a bunch of 4 and 5 star players to compete for a national championship. Michigan is a very well-coached football team. And as of right now, it looks like Michigan is going to beat Ohio State for the third straight year with 3 star recruits. As a Ohio State fan, I admire the Michigan coaching staff.
I'll take all conference transfers ( some multiple)from Stanford,Coastal, Nebraska, etc over high school 4-5 stars any day...Proven commodity over some young kid... NO BRAINER
Michigan is made up of mostly 4* recruits. They are usually in the top 10 in recruiting every year. Sure they have some 3* recruits in every class but usually the 4* kids outweighs the 3* recruits. They do get a few 5* kids here and there but usually they get one or two 5* recruits every couple years. JJ was a 5* quarterback coming out of high school. Donovan Edwards and Will Johnson are a couple more 5* recruits that come to mind. Michigan usually recruits very well despite being shackled by recruits needing to meet a high academic GPA standard in order to come to Michigan.
Michigan is fantastic. I understand they've been beating bad teams, but they've felt in complete control of every game at all times this season. JJ McCarthy has gotten significantly better, the offensive line seems to gel more and more each week, and their defense is the best in the country at the moment. Georgia vs Michigan was my preseason pick for the national title game, and after how both teams dominated Saturday, I feel really good about that prediction.
Well let's not forget teams like Georgia struggled bad against teams like Kent State and Missouri nobody talks about that though. Don't matter who Michigan plays they will beat them. They have only given up 34 points total I think that's average 6 points a game. Best defense in the country. They will handle business with whoever is put in front of them. 💯
@@RoyHobbs-hk8cf Georgia hasn't played Kent State or Missouri this year lol. That was last year, when Georgia was one of the best teams of the last 25 years of CFB.

So easy to see Michigan’s first 5 games and not be totally wowed based on competition but it’s so easy to look past their depth when they play and they really do just completely wear out teams by halftime it’s unbelievable
It should be said that the field goal and TD that makes up that 10 were extraordinary efforts to put points on the board. A 54 yard FG and a last second TD Hail Mary. This defense is something else.
Hey Joel. Long time watcher, first time commenter. Michigan is the best team in the nation by far. Its ridiculous that they keep voting us #1, but hey, I'll take it. Go Blue!
Question for everyone saying they haven't played anyone this year. How is this any different than the last two years? They didn't play anyone in 2021 & 2022 either and won the Big in both years. If you study the game and really pay attention while watching you'll know how good a team is regardless of who they're playing. You have to peel back the layers and look beneath the surface to see what's really going on. NIU Coach Thomas Hammock is one who was really paying attention. Remember in 2021 when they beat NIU 63-10. After the game coach Thomas Hammock said that Michigan is built to win the Big. And lo and behold he was right. Michigan has won the Big two years in a row. During the 2021 season I knew that Michigan needed to get prepared for the inevitable shootout at the end of the season but they were not. Last year they were more prepared but fell short. This year they are better prepared so we will see what happens. Don't worry the schedule toughens up in November.
While I have watched Michigan for 55 years and agree with some that they have often had had difficulty winning bowl games, in part one would think because of coaching (who remembers Drew Henson against Alabama in an overtime win as an exception? That was one of my favorite Michigan teams with the A Train, etc.) even Bo had his problems with bowl games. This team is different. They are more mature and balanced then last year and they seem to know the only team that can beat them is themselves. This "knowing" seems to speak to Joel's comment of them knowing why they need to play the way they are. If you truly know your the only one who can beat you, then you probably won't get beat. I'm not sure they "knew" that last year. Teams like this only come along so often...in fact there may never have been a team quite like this. The balance, depth, talent, focus, unselfishness, knowing exactly what they are playing for each week, its all there.. I enjoy sports when its played at this level... Enjoy!

Something not talked about very much (as I can tell) is the asst. coaches upstairs during the game. Doesn't seem to matter how good UM is in the 1st half, they come out in the 2nd, totally prepared. No scores against them until the 2-3 string players enter in the 4th. It's not just the ability to play good offense and good defense, by the student players, and on the field coaching, it's also the ability of the asst. coaches to analyze what the other team is doing and get the players to change slightly in their line-ups, their spacing, their angles, and stop the other team dead in their tracks. I watched Jon Jansen on Michigan Replay, show how the defensive line players maybe adjusted inches after that 1st score by Minnesota and that was it.
The depth is legit. Example: Mason Graham has missed the last two weeks with injury. Michigans Dline still dominated. Graham comes back against Minnesota and leads the team in Tackles, TFL, Sacks, Pressures.
you did a great job explaining these stats like penalties and play totals, but the "why" is why JH is S tier coach. the biggest thing that can derail a team this good is injuries. less plays, less injuries. why risk injuries while playing teams that are not PSU and OSU.
As a michigan fan, watching them vs watching ohio st this year...ive got no clue what else will happen but i do know the buckeyes wont survive their trip to ann arbor, i can guarantee that
As long as Michigan doesn’t give up deep shots to Harrison Jr. this year should be a bigger win for Michigan than the last two! OSU even softer on the O-line this year!
UM fan here. I learned after the TCU game, attack at all times. Play as if you're BEHIND at all times. Finish every drive with points. Learn to access the situation without mistakes. Do that . We are only a few teams who are able to win the Natty.
@@rockig5529 The deep shots he's gotten this year, he's had to stop or slow down and wait on the ball. Thats a pick with Michigan's secondary....and thats assuming McCord has enough time to throw.
On the schedule. It is Michigan’s fault for the non-conference being so weak. But it is not their fault that every other Big Ten (other than Ohio State and Penn State, obviously) took this season off.
Michigan is the best team in the country. JJ McCarthy is the missing link that Michigan needed to get over the top. Penn State on the road is the game I think Michigan could possibly lose this year.
I don’t like the hype. I wish Michigan would just fly under the radar. Jinx is a good term to use. Let’s see what happens with Penn st and Ohio St before all the hype
Take offensive stats at michigan and basically add 25% to them. Individually maybe more, like running bsck group. They are really good but need to see more.
Georgia is only number 1 based NOT on what they've done THIS yr, but because of what they have done in the past two years. THIS yr, Michigan has shown themselves to be the best team out there. C'mon Georgia, Auburn took you to the limit and they are not even ranked.
@@omieg89 They would. they have a veteran qb and the fact is they are just much deeper at every position, not to mention having the best offensive line the last 3 years. Georgia is still a very good team, no denying it. but they are not at all like last year or the year before and you know this.

Yeah another small detail to remember. THEY WERE MISSING THEIR HEISMAN CALIBER RB WHO PROBABLY WINS THE HEISMAN IF HE DOESNT GET INJURED🤷♂️
Sorry, but as a Michigan
alum and fan, I am still worried about Georgia. They have won the past two years and might do it again.
But without an offensive Michigan 21 opponents 28
and only 2 of those TDs against were with starters in the game. 2 of them were garbage TDs late against backups
Beating a dead horse but none of their opponents so far are college playoff caliber. Therefor, Michigan is meeting expectation. The upcoming gauntlet of MSU, Maryland, Penn State and OSU will clear things up.
@@fredlin6303acting like Rutgers won't beat whoever you root for is laughable.
Yes, but can that defense kick field goals?
Go Blue
let's not forget. in the playoffs, corum was hurt, and Edwards had one hand. so he couldn't even do what he did best.
a lot could be said about both of those guys two. both humble enough to share snaps and sit out in the 4th.
it would be awesome if that humble attitude stays with the team when theses guys move on
Dudes not a 1st round NFL pick
@@joegreezy He isn't but he may be another Brock Purdy with wheels.
JJ is one aspect but Michigan has a rotating RB's and defensive front 7. They all know everyone needs to play in order for team to get better. Wouldn't surprise me to see Michigan dip into transfer portal more in the future to mine players who are winning-first individuals to continue the culture they are building.
@@joegreezyhaha JJ is absolutely a 1st round pick. No less than 5 NFL teams need QBs from next year’s (24’) draft and JJ is top 3 in every metric. Can you name 5 QBs with better resumes and pro evaluation?
There maybe better QBs in college than JJ McCarthy, but he's the best NFL prospect out of them all. I hope he comes back for his senior year.
That’s an insane statement, I would rather have one Caleb Williams than 10 JJ McCarthys

Come on Joel. JJ is one of the best QBs in the country and this belief he hasn’t proved it yet is ridiculous. He’s lost 1 game as a starter and is one of most efficient in the country. He doesn’t have flashy stats cause the team doesn’t ask him to. He hasn’t played in a 4th quarter all season. He’s elite.

he had a 3 pick game which soured Joel...and JJ has tremendous players that help him...this is a great QB yr all around ...with Williams in the hunt for a 2nd Heisman

Take a peak at the schedule for next year..Can’t wait…Texas, Oregon, U of Washington, Ohio State, and I believe USC🔥🔥🔥
All those INT’s against Bowling Green
Whatever Michigan’s gonna do they better do it this year because next year schedule good luck they finally have to play somebody
SEC fans just claim greatest conference when it’s just Georgia and Bama
Joel, its not Michigan's fault they played Minnesota and they should not be dropped to number two for it. I think you, like a lot of others, are letting last years Georgia team cloud your judgment somewhat. Michigan's starters are leaving the field in the 3rd quarter regularly because the games are over, that say's a lot about how good they are.
This is the year for Michigan, buckle up err body
Michigan has gotten most of their roster into each game this year. Even the second and third stringers rarely make a mistake. That bodes well for next few years, after they send 15 players to the NFL in the next draft class.
Boa constrictors crush its prey.

Joel has some of my favorite football commentary, honest, to the point, and often correct! Great stuff as always... SKO BUFFS
As a Michigan fan I think Georgia is 1 until they lose.
Just like Michigan is 2 until they lose.
Hey Joel. Long time watcher, first time commenter. Michigan is the best team in the nation by far. Its ridiculous that they keep voting us #1, but hey, I'll take it. Go Blue!

Urban Meyer No Respect !!!!
Enjoy!
Michigan Defense score 2 pick sixes = 12 points

They play the nuns of the north 5 weeks in a row at home.
Ditto for their strength and conditioning program. They are big, fast and physical on all levels.
The depth is legit. Example: Mason Graham has missed the last two weeks with injury. Michigans Dline still dominated. Graham comes back against Minnesota and leads the team in Tackles, TFL, Sacks, Pressures.
That Boa constrictor will go 0-3 in the playoffs
If you are taken out of Your confort Zone, you need to have a backup Plan
Michigan has been dominant all season
Penn State will beat OSU, Michigan wins out
Exactly right 💯
To paraphrase my late, hilarious uncle, "We're not perfect. We just don't make mistakes." 😁
you did a great job explaining these stats like penalties and play totals, but the "why" is why JH is S tier coach. the biggest thing that can derail a team this good is injuries. less plays, less injuries. why risk injuries while playing teams that are not PSU and OSU.
The question is will they if they stay consistent even against the top tier programs
That TCU game was a fluke. Yet we only lost by a TD.
Michigan's worst game thus far was against Bowling Green, and that was STILL a three-score win.
That’s hardly anything to brag about.
As a michigan fan, watching them vs watching ohio st this year...ive got no clue what else will happen but i do know the buckeyes wont survive their trip to ann arbor, i can guarantee that
Did I see that correctly? I honestly believe that Penn state can beat the team down south.
We beat you up take your will and spirit 〽️〽️〽️
12-0 Michigan. OSU is too soft to beat them and James Franklin is too big of a choke artist to beat them
As long as Michigan doesn’t give up deep shots to Harrison Jr. this year should be a bigger win for Michigan than the last two! OSU even softer on the O-line this year!
Watch the tape. OSU is not soft
@@urban_legendO-Hwatching the tape will show you exactly that lol
UM fan here. I learned after the TCU game, attack at all times. Play as if you're BEHIND at all times. Finish every drive with points. Learn to access the situation without mistakes. Do that . We are only a few teams who are able to win the Natty.

Take offensive stats at michigan and basically add 25% to them. Individually maybe more, like running bsck group. They are really good but need to see more.
Legitimately, just to add 25% to those stats because our starters only play three quarters of the game.

Georgia is only number 1 based NOT on what they've done THIS yr, but because of what they have done in the past two years. THIS yr, Michigan has shown themselves to be the best team out there. C'mon Georgia, Auburn took you to the limit and they are not even ranked.
You act as if Michigan would do much better if they traveled to Jordan Hare stadium.
@@omieg89 They would. they have a veteran qb and the fact is they are just much deeper at every position, not to mention having the best offensive line the last 3 years. Georgia is still a very good team, no denying it. but they are not at all like last year or the year before and you know this.
