Big joel im 50/50 on this but want some pushback on 5 seed path of least resistance. How does a powerhouse sec or big10 not want that that end of the day.
@@birwinz assuming they win out, they get the four seed. This means they’ll probably be playing Oregon or Ohio State at the five seed, who is significantly better than BYU
If you flip Indiana & BYU with Penn St & Tennessee, I think would’ve gotten it right. Feels like they’re projecting rather than ranking the current teams, which makes it tough to move teams up and down later.
Totally agree, but Texas should be below them too. Similar issue of having no great wins & losing to an elite team. Michigan win isn’t really impressive anymore & they’ve played pretty much as easy as an SEC schedule can be
So an undefeated 9-0 Miami at #4 is too high but 7-1 Penn State, Texas & Tennessee aren’t? You’re saying Miami is a brand thats why they are ranked above BYU & Indiana but at least they are undefeated unlike those one loss SEC schools that you have no problem putting above Indiana & BYU. The double standard is insane.

Absolutely right, Joel. Great perspectives. I do agree with everything you said....except for that #10 ranking for BYU (not sure how you can put them there and continue with the arguments about brand bias). Go Cougs!
Well this is why we implemented the 12 team playoff. If BYU and Indiana stay undefeated they will 100% get in the playoffs and we can decide who's best on the field.
BYU have more ranked wins than Indiana , Texas , Miami and Penn state combined with a 30 point win ones number 19 Kansas state and defeating number 13 SMU on the road . Indiana can’t really complain as they have defeated 0 bowl eligible teams and have the 103rd ranked schedule even though I think they are a good team . If there only loss is to Ohio state they still might make the playoff whereas byu could have 2 great wins and finish the regular season undefeated and still not make the playoff is they lose their conference championship game . BYU should be the ones that are complaining . There’s bo way Indiana should be ranked above byu .
@@shobisness8629Omg. This is the exact argument the G5 teams have been using for decades. If record is the only thing that counts no matter the competition, then army is in the top 5
Texas beat defending National champions Michigan in week 2, ranked#10. Oklahoma #12 in week 7. Vanderbilt #24. Just sayin… the real brand bias is Oregon. They’ve had a weak schedule and only beat Ohio State by 1 due to a loop hole n the rules. What kind of coach thinks about how to beat the system to win instead of how to beat the team in head to head football?? Oregon overrated!
@@danielregalado2745it wasn’t a “loop hole” it was a clear rule in the sport at the time. He read the rules and understood said rules better than any other coaches. And don’t act like OSU didn’t get away with a clear interception call on the first drive of the game. Since the Boise game, Oregon has been firing on all cylinders winning by 35,21,21,35,29,21 with the exception of the 1 point win over OSU. Texas started off the season on absolute FIRE.. but have clearly cooled off with their 3 point victory over Vandy, and the week before they lost by 15 and were down 23-0 at half…. In Austin…
You’re trying to tell us that a Hoosier football team that went 3-9 last year, only beating Indiana State, Akron, and Wisconsin is being unfairly biased? Sorry but with a previous year like that, you could understand why the committee is a little hesitant to put too much stock in that team. The same Hoosier team went 4-8 the year before. So even trending isn’t in their favor. Now look at Miami. 5-7 in 2022. 6-6 (regular season only here), and now 9-0. Not to mention Miami’s roster is literally just top tier talent after top tier talent. Sure they’ve had some close calls but even Georgia has. Oregon barely beat the state of Idaho. Talk about a bias. You can just admit you don’t like Miami, it’s cool, we already know most people do.
Comparing ‘23 UGA and ‘24 Indiana is a joke and you know it. UGA had won 40 strait games, of course they had some brand influence. We don’t know these players on Indiana. There’s a difference
LSU has absolutely no chance to jump Notre Dame since they lost to the two teams Notre Dame beat. Indiana at 11-1 drops behind Notre Dame. 2 loss Tennessee drops behind Notre Dame. It would take an insane miracle for Notre Dame to not get in.
So if IU loses to OSU (i presume thats what their 1 loss is if theyre 11-1) that’s worse than losing to NIU? 😂😂😂😂. ND fans should be lucky they were good 100 years ago bc otherwise you wouldn’t be in the playoff ranking
Dude is such a biased hater on Miami. Maybe it’s because they knocked him out many years ago. Miami is 4-0 versus the FPI top 30. All of the “bad calls” against Miami were the correct calls. People are just getting caught up in “indisputable” verbiage. What a surprise he loved the non Miami team in the ACC. How long til he falls in love with SMU? GTFOH. I will only come back when Miami wins a playoff game to watch his tears.
The end of the VT game and the no targeting against Cal were not correct calls. Sorry to burst your bubble. Miami should have at least 1 loss and has no defense
@ You are letting the hate cloud your judgement. If you honestly believe the VT debacle was a legitimate catch, then you are not objectively watching the same play as me. As far as the targeting play, I saw a shoulder to shoulder hit. Even if it was targeting, there was 2 minutes left on the clock and Miami had 3 timeouts. Cal had gotten many (0) first downs in the fourth quarter and likely would have punted after 3 more plays. Not to mention all the calls that didn’t go Miamis way. Nobody mentions those plays. There were several against Miami in both games. Listen, Miami has an elite offense. This is likely the best offense Miami has ever had. Sure, Cam is a stud. So is the OL/DL/WR/RB/TE position groups. We have an SEC type group in the trenches. Anyone saying Miami is overrated just doesn’t watch their games.
@@Ermatinger503”should have” well sorry to burst your bubble but they don’t. If you honestly think that VT and Cal calls were wrong then you’re just a mad fan of another team that’s not Miami.

We should have kept a computer model while moving to a playoff. Then, with all its flaws, we'd at least have defined and consistent metrics for playoff selection. I don't know why a committee of administrators and executives was added upon the creation of the playoffs - The selection method of the top two teams wasn't the issue in the BCS era, it was the fact that only two teams were selected.

Hi Joel! Love your content, and I appreciate your hard work! Loved the behind the scenes episodes. Looks like you are living your best life :D Wishing you well from Norway
Where is the brand bias for Texas Joel? Their best win is Michigan. They faced one team in their realm this year and got WAXED at home. Why so quiet Joel?
@@Czq7py3-5v4ye True, but as a Texas fan I can say that the Vanderbilt game did not inspire confidence. Sloppy play. Mental mistakes. They looked shaky.
@samclark3370 The issue is Miami's 'one trick pony' keeps them in any game, against any defense. It's the great equalizer. What other team is down 28-17 midway through 3 and still cover 21 at the end of the game? Lol Also, the greatness of the Texas defense is irrelevant if Ewers keeps turning the ball over.
I’m guessing the brand bias is really the talent composite. If a team has a low talent composite entering the season, there is more doubt when they have a weak strength of schedule. Indiana and BYU entered the season at 57 and 78, respectively. Now if IU only loses a close one to OSU, they deserve a playoff spot.
To be fair Ohio state lost their starting left tackle first half of Oregon so couldn't run the ball the 2nd half. Used Nebraska game to try to figure out a way to run the ball for the Penn State game. But that being said they are beatable anyone can lose any week.
Miami SOS is 46th BYU 61st Indiana 103rd I know you work for Fox who partners with the big10 and big12 you don’t have to be so bias or is it jealousy for what Miami did to you as a player 😂😂😂
BYU passes the eye test if you just watch the 1st half of games. They tend to get up big then control the game and clock in the 2nd half. They're not blowing out teams even though they could. When they get up big they use the time to get backups some experience instead of running up the score for style points.
I love when you so-called experts hate on Miami all of you keep Miami’s name in your mouth more than you do your own team. Keep hating please because a true hurricane fans love it.
Brand = Ratings. National champion is determined by how much money the media makes from a team. On field performance is irrelevant, this model is laying the groundwork for the downfall of college football.
The beauty of March Madness is because of the upsets and Cinderella stories. I believe in the future, the 12 team format will have that same effect as March Madness. Haven’t been this excited for CFP since the 4 team format was introduced.
Miami will line up with any team this year and have a good chance to win. There are no elite teams this year, and they've got the best offense in the nation.
You’re correct on the point that there are “No elite teams this year.” AND with the portal & NIL the times of the ‘Bama’s & Georgia & Clemsons strangleholds are quickly ending. The B10 & SEC Administrators colluding to try to keep their power proves that they are running scared. 3-5 more seasons with current rules will prove that out!
Joel, PSU has done nothing and they’re #6. ND has 2, soon to be 3 ranked wins while PSU will have zero most likely. Why do they carry so much clout to be ranked at #6? They’ve done less than ND in the last decade!

Penn state still being ranked that high is insane 😒 they haven’t beaten a soul yet and lost at home to Ohio state and that game wasn’t even that close. They scored 10 point in the first 5 minutes and then scored 3 the next 55.. that’s not a good team.
There’s nothing to talk about? The Miami, BYU, Indiana ranking positions are much more important and interesting. Penn State would be talked about if they were undefeated and didn’t lose their biggest game of the season…
Sometimes Klatt is just out in left field imo, and complaining that IU is too low at #8, really?.....theyve played nobody, like strength of schedule is 112th or something....Miami’s schedule is 46th, so considerably tougher....plus if IU beats OSU then they'll jump, but go me 8th is very good for them
Love your content Joel! But the reason why teams like Indiana, BYU, and SMU, are slow to get up in the rankings is because people do not want another TCU v UGA national championship. These blue bloods are blue bloods because they have a history of winning. When pit against these new bloods, they usually dominate. Clear as day.
These Blue Bloods are blue bloods because they have a history of winning. Until they don't win. For every UGA VS TCU there's a Boise State VS. Oklahoma. Fun fact Army probably. Has a better history of winning than anyone ahead of them except ND. Just not recent, like Miami. They haven't good in almost 20 years. That's the inconsistency that is driving people crazy.
@ thats true! but there was a reason why UCF didn’t get into the playoffs in 2017. They, like TCU, had weak schedules so it was hard to gauge if they were actually good. While the blue bloods are consistently good, consistently having higher ranking recruits, etc.
@@stevenhossen1624, everything you said is true, the problem is having higher ranked recruits and things does not necessarily equal better teams. Case in point Florida State this year. It sounds like the one thing we can agree on is that at least if you win your conference, your in. I just don't like polls because you're guessing which teams are better and there's no consistency.
@@trackcoachmac I think Florida state this year is an anomaly. But look at the other blue bloods over the years - Bama, UGA, Michigan, Ohio State - they consistently rank at the top of recruiting classes. With these higher classes they win championships and they stay at the top of mountain. The polls are just there to give a pulse check of the best teams based on numerous factors: strength of schedule, talent, offense and defensive performance, and also history of success (whether we like it or not). Without that last factor, you would see teams like Liberty in the top 15… when they clearly do not belong.
I think Miami deserves a top 5 spot. They have the #1 offense, a top 20 defense drastically. Miami is ranked #1 in 3rd down efficiency and their defense is ranked 12 in 3rd down defense. Miami gets a lot of hate from former players in the media out of envy.

@@ZB_Snickers I want to start with if ND wins the remaining game they’re in. They get tv viewers, it’s a huge brand at the end of the day it’s all about money and views. I wouldn’t say it was a fluke. MF said the week after that loss the A&M game got to his and the teams head and they overlooked NIU plus the NIU coach said that he had specific reads on what ND was doing that week and MF called and he told him what they were the next week so perhaps all those things helped form the team we now see. All I hope for is wins the rest of the way, no more injuries to key players 🤞and some sign of a downfield passing game. Having Jordan Faizon back is great but if a former walk on is your best receiver or 1a(beaux Collins has been solid too)that’s not a great sign.
For me, BYU is the only real issue. I had Indiana 7, BYU 5, Miami 4. Miami does have the highest SOS of the 3 based on computers n power ratings, not people. Miami won at Louisville, won at Florida. And even Duke is higher rated most places than any1 indiana has beaten yet. I do think the argument of miami/byu is a closer call, but indiana should be behind both, imho.
Your take is a complete joke on ND. IU deserves to be higher? What team with a winning record have they played? LSU and Bama as 2 loss deserve to pass ND? Bro you need your credentials and credibility taken away
The CFP isn’t about getting the best teams. It’s a product that is owned by ESPN. It’s a television product. Ratings are the only things that matter. So it will be difficult for smaller schools to make it in without winning their conference

Who has Texas and Penn State beaten? Why not call them out instead of Miami? Do they have any wins over CFP 25 opponents? Nope, but Miami does! I might have to start believing that you Klatt dont like M.I.A.M.I.!
As stated in the video Michigan last year were 113th in SOS and were ranked 3 in the first playoff ranking. Don't think you'd make the same argument for them
In the past, the CFP committee has always asked "who have you played?" and "who have you beat?", basically SOS and SOR metrics. Then this year they just threw that out the window in favor of the eye test.
He didn't say anything bad about Miami, his point was that Indiana and BYU aren't benefiting from the same bias that Miami is. He also didn't say Miami doesn't deserve to be that high, quite the contrary he said the other two should also be higher like Miami is. The fact you think this was a bad take goes to show you literally didn't listen to the take at all and instead just got defensive and shut down so the only pathetic thing here is you.
Gratitude for putting up that graphic with the 2023 Michigan Wolverines "Strength of Schedule" (11:40 - 11:45) and their 2 best wins being against UNRANKED Opponents!!!! I've discussed / argued with Wolverine Fans about how EASY their schedule was in their '23 National Championship Year compared to the other '23 Playoff Teams. I had no idea that their Strength of Schedule was so LOW (111th)!!! Besides Minnesota and Rutgers being on that '23 Conference Schedule........Purdue, Michigan St., and Maryland were other "perennial BIG 10 bottom feeders" they had the "comfort" of playing in 2023. Michigan's Out of Conference Schedule was also a "joke" in '23: Bowling Green - East Carolina - the 2023 UNLV Runnin' Rebels. I've said this before in this comment section: "If the '23 Wolverines had to play the schedule that the 2024 Wolverines are playing.........they would NOT have won that National Championship".
Their tough games were all end of year, like OSU. 4 of their last 5 games before the playoffs were against ranked teams. But 8 games in, yeah, it was horrible.

Such brand bias! I’d totally put Indiana & BYU above Miami! Miami is only 4 because people want them to be 4 even though they’re not! Just let me say that they are playing in the ACC! The conference is so weak and Miami is barely beating average or bad teams. Maybe if they can even make it to the ACC championship and get beat by SMU people will finally see that they have no defense and their schedule is almost AAC level! Thanks for the show Mr. Klatt
Indiana's strength of schedule is 103rd in the country, Miami's is 46th. Facts over your biased opinion, and Miami has had a much tougher schedule. As far as barely beating, VT is a very solid team, definitely not average. They almost beat Syracuse and with a backup QB as their starter was hurt. We clobbered Florida, the same Florida who should have beat Georgia if not for losing Lagway. We lead the entire game and beat a now ranked Louisville, and ultimately we beat the spread and handled a Duke team with one of the best defenses in the country. Scored over 50 points and double the points than any other team has. As far as the ACC being weak, they are literally on par with BYU's big 12. It's the SEC/BIG 10 and everyone else, but Indiana has the weakest strength of schedule in their conference, and they're going to lose to Ohio State. Their only tough game.
Is it brand bias or is it talent bias? Indiana and BYU don't have the talent like the other schools which is why they wouldn't be favored to beat any of the teams above them. Has nothing to do with brand bias, they just don't have the recruits.
Joel. Miami has covered 7 out of 9 weeks and has almost a 100 team difference in strength of schedule as you said. Why don’t you discuss their average point differential?
Because Miami plays no one. Not one ranked team. They played ball state and Florida a&m.....c'mon 😂😂😂 Miami is in a cupcake conference. No one is ranked except them. Get tf outta here.
College football was better under the BCS era, Every game meant more… And I will never change my mind. The 4 team playoff was a litmus test for what has now become the 12 team playoff… Like I had said from the very beginning, And the powers that be Figured out is the more you expand the playoffs, the more traditional Blue Bloods you can keep it national title, contention, thereby driving up attendance, ratings, and revenue.
Miami has a harder schedule than Texas and Oregon? What top 5 or even top 10 team has Miami played? The ACC is a joke and Miami should have at least 1 loss (two in my opinion) but the refs blessed you. Any team with a good defense is torching Miami
Both Michigan and Georgia were also in the playoffs from the previous year and so started the season already ranked fairly high. So yeah there probably is brand bias but it also can matter a lot where the AP ranks you preseason
About time Joel was willing to acknowledge these teams. He fully ignored them early in the year, even when commenting games live, but I respect the willingness to change
you’re spot on with BYU and Miami but you’re crying brand bias against indiana when they haven’t beaten anyone (their fault for scheduling 3 cupcakes) and they don’t have the NFL talent on the roster that Michigan and Georgia had last year
I’m a Michigan fan, but if Indiana beats us this week I’ll be cheering for them the rest of the way! I think they’re capable of beating Ohio State and/or winning a playoff game
Problem i have with the current rankings: if IU and Penn state both lose one more game (for sake of argument lets say IU loses to OSU) then do they both fall the same amount and IU stays below penn state? So then would a 11-1 B1G team with an identical loss to a 10-2 B1G team be considered worse still? I have much more of a problem with penn state being above IU than Miami
I will take your word on NOTRE DAME, because you had the ND v Navy pick so spot on! At least admit your an anti Domer! The NIU game was lost with 30 seconds left by 2 pts. Maybe mention that.
Joel, love your show! I have seen the others many times, and yours is EASILY head and shoulders above the rest! I agree with you about the brand bias, especially with Indiana. It is almost like the committee is thinking, "They have to prove themselves by stringing together multiple great seasons, then we will award them with better rankings." NO....A great year is a great year! But, big brands and big money run the sport. Keep up the great videos!! You're way above the D.C.'s of the sports commentary!!
This is the flaw of trying to turn college football into a more NFL product to determine the national championship. You are going to have bias, the “eye test”, a handful of teams with good resumes, and using win/loss to determine the teams. Every team is judged on a different balance of the metrics. I miss the old days when it was about beating your rival, winning your conference and making your big bowl game.
Ill tell you why the canes are ranked higher and it isnt bc of a brand.# 1 The VT win- this was a team that nearly beat vanderbilt and we know vandy is a really good football team, #2 the Louisville win they dogwalked clemson, #3 beating the gators who actually had their starting qb at the time in the swamp, beating duke who lost to SMU by 1 point,#4 Cam Freaking Ward. Hush up about miami and their placing. Its more of a media biasness than anything else. Oh and joel ohio state wont be winning anything this year.
I agree with you about BYU and Indiana… BUT you work in the entertainment business Joel. Big brands sell. It’s all about the money for these networks including yours. If you want Indiana and BYU higher up with a better chance of making the semi-finals, it’s going to affect you and your show. Again, I don’t agree with it but it’s the reality.
I'll give you another angle to look at it from. I'm an OU fan, we've been bad this season and I was thinking "man, I wish we had Indiana's coach". But then I thought, what would OU's record be if we had Indiana's schedule? What if they had ours? While Indiana might be suffering from a brand issue, I'd suggest schedule is even more relevant.
100%. The committee looks at the “blue blood” programs from the perspective of “prove that they don’t belong” and any other team from the perspective of “prove that they do belong”. It’s a gimme for the cfb favorites and an uphill battle for anyone else
I think it’s good spot for Miami matching up better. Miami has a better chance vs bigger talent. They struggle vs smaller faster talent and more spread offenses.

@@trackcoachmac I think Florida state this year is an anomaly. But look at the other blue bloods over the years - Bama, UGA, Michigan, Ohio State - they consistently rank at the top of recruiting classes. Because those are the best 2 conferences
@@billyyank5807SEC isn’t that good this year. Use your Gators as a reference
He can't it would ruin his weak argument.
Miami was also gifted two wins by the refs. They’re not a real contender
@@Ermatinger503 explain gifted? If you think Miami was gifted anything, you’ve been asleep for the past 30 years.
Miami hurricanes best team in nation this Guy is the biggest hater Texas , Oregon both have a easier strength of schedule then Miami
Miami is soft.
😂😂😂
What are you smoking?
Miami has a harder schedule than Texas and Oregon? What top 5 or even top 10 team has Miami played? The ACC is a joke and Miami should have at least 1 loss (two in my opinion) but the refs blessed you. Any team with a good defense is torching Miami
@@Ermatinger503reading and research is fundamental you can answer that yourself one game doesn’t define a schedule smart ahh
Is Georgia tech the best team in the nation now?
You wouldn't If they lose to you? I thought you'd hope for them to take down OSU in general and represent the conference well in playoffs
@@rockerfarm6445oh I would, I just meant that I’m not cheering for them this week. I phrased that badly lol
A Michigan fan thinks Indiana is capable of beating Ohio State?! NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
same
Cheating not working well this year lmfao
Well here the thing , a school/brand as big as Notre dame shouldn't be losing MAC teams
The NIU game was lost. Don't gotta qualify it
You lost to a MAC team, doesn’t matter how, that’s embarrassing. Leonard will choke for you don’t worry!
How you gon say all this about BYU and still rank them at 10 , you bias yourself
Klatt hates Miami always has
Maybe but he’s honestly spitting straight facts
@@glaucidiumgnoma5797no he’s not none of them teams would stand up against Miami stop it
@@Truckerdatfish lol.....
Miami is Notre Dame South
@@Truckerdatfish Miami had help from the refs
Joel, love your show! I have seen the others many times, and yours is EASILY head and shoulders above the rest! I agree with you about the brand bias, especially with Indiana. It is almost like the committee is thinking, "They have to prove themselves by stringing together multiple great seasons, then we will award them with better rankings." NO....A great year is a great year! But, big brands and big money run the sport. Keep up the great videos!! You're way above the D.C.'s of the sports commentary!!
How does Miami rank #46 in SOS, but BYU ranks #63, but BYU has played more ranked teams than Miami?
BYU has dominated the Big 12, Indiana hasn’t beaten anyone. Game at Ohio st will be huge for them.
Absolutely joel! It's all about the brand and the money.
5:33😂😂😂😂
100%. The committee looks at the “blue blood” programs from the perspective of “prove that they don’t belong” and any other team from the perspective of “prove that they do belong”. It’s a gimme for the cfb favorites and an uphill battle for anyone else
BYU just needs to stay focused and continue winning (and surprising people). The respect will come as will the ranking.
BYU has the same number of CFP Top 25 wins as the 5 teams ranked in front of them. BYU(2) IU(0) Tennessee(1) Texas(0) PSU(0) Miami(1)
Preseason Rankings is absolutely the initiator of this bias.
Honey, wake up! The Klattster is giving the comitee the business
I think it’s good spot for Miami matching up better. Miami has a better chance vs bigger talent. They struggle vs smaller faster talent and more spread offenses.
