    @WobblesandBean 3 ปีที่แล้ว +705

    For anyone asking how they do the eye thing, I'm a zoologist specializing in ornithology, I can answer this. There's two main reasons that together create the effect, and I will try to explain them both without using big science-y words.
    The biggest reason is that Lawes parotia birds have a very extreme form of central heterochromia, meaning they have one color on the inside of the eye, and a different color on the outside. They have two rings of color in their iris, a thick yellow ring surrounding a thinner, more reflective blue ring. If you could remove the eyeball, it would look like a dartboard; the small innermost center dot as the pupil, then the thin blue ring surrounding the center, then a much wider yellow band surrounding that. The yellow ring is typically hidden behind their eyelids, as you cannot see the sclera in birds like you can see ours. All you typically see is the pupil and the inner blue iris. When males flash their eye during a dance, they sharply constrict their pupils, causing the thick yellow ring to fill the eye, and the blue ring to become so small it just looks like part of the pupil. If you look up photos of them, in some of them you can see a bit of yellow peeking out the corner of the eye, on the very edge of the blue.
    The second reason has to do with the translucent quality of the blue pigment. When light hits the eye at a specific angle, the blue disappears and just looks black, making the opaque yellow pigment look much more prominent. It's very similar to one-way mirrors, or how the surface reflection of water makes it difficult to see anything beneath, even though the water is clear. But if light hits it at a certain angle, you can see past the reflective surface. When Lawes parotia males point their eye skyward, light hits the blue pigment in a way that it becomes transparent like the pupil itself, thus appearing black.
    Overall the effect is like, 80% the first one and 20% the second, but it's still interesting how there's more than just one thing going on that results in this really cool effect. I hope all of that made sense, I'm kinda bad at describing things in layman's terms. 😅

Winters are still harsh, snow is common way into april. In september first snow falls -15 is common. I have been away from it 46 years now.
