I picked up the exact same combo, EOS R with 24-70 f2.8, right after the R5 came out. There was no way I could afford the R5 and the EOS R was a bit over budget as it was. But I had started to hit a wall with the M50 and have seen a huge improvement in my blacksmithing videos using it. So I am glad I spent the money. Of course I really wouldn't call myself a film maker, just a TH-cam blacksmith. Thanks for the video.

I was looking into this Camera this past week. Thank you for making this, Danny! Also, Thank you for being one of my biggest inspirations for leaving my old career of 10 years and getting into Video and photography. You’ve truly helped me discover my deep passion for this and for that I can’t thank you enough.

I love my Eos R. It's still my main stills camera. Perfect B Cam for the C200 and my BMPCC6K, great youtube camera as well. Even used it in Antarctica when I couldn't use anything else since the weather was insane and it held up pretty well :). Lovely footage by the way man !!
I've been using the EOS R for a year and I totally agree, it's an amazing camera! My films about traveling and working online have showed great quality because of this one.
Yes! When you have true cinematography skills, you get gorgeous results with a low to mid-budget cameras, and Danny, you are a true master! I wish you will continue teaching us those cinematography skills no matter what gear you and we have, thanks!
Heck yes EOS R! I won two and it's easily my favorite camera of all time. Affordable, reliable, and great quality- what more could you want? The MetaBones speedbooster makes it easier to shoot 4K video too. But the 1080 looks amazing and the workflow is so easy. Sorry, I kind of blurted a lot out there. I just get excited about the R.
@@usmanmajid7837 Well on the EOS R its always best not to under expose becouse the noise in the shadows is crazy bad. The R6 doesn't have this problem. But its a balancing act between the shadows and the Highlights. I would say as long as you are not peaking a massive part of you image exposing for the shadows works well on the R but the R6 I just expose for the highlights. and lately I have simply done 75% lumi for skin tones and things have gone smooth but that is with R6 zebra lines.
@@DanielWhiteWithCanon Nice, thanks for the tips Daniel! How are you getting on with your R6? I mentioned in a comment elsewhere that I'm still rocking a 70D but so desperately need to move into the full frame, 4k, c-log, higher-frame rate game now that I'm doing more serious client work. I have my eyes on the R6 too but oh man.... the overheating issues are giving me anxiety, otherwise I'd have probably already gotten it! As someone who doesn't have big budgets to play with, buying a camera that expensive (for me) would mean it'd need to be my main driver. And that means all kinds of shoots, including longer podcast episodes that I film or interviews etc and I just cannot fathom spending so much money with constant overheating concerns.
i dont know why i keep came back to your channel , watching what you are talking and spreading positive messages, and that makes me very happy when i felt depressed .

This review was so impartial and unbiased - thank you!!! I bought the EOS R in March and struggled with the same things as you mentioned. Can’t wait to see what you can create with the A7SIII!!!
As an eos r owner and user for the past year and a half I can truly say that I love it! the cropped 4k is a little disappointing but I found myself most of the time shooting in 1080p and sometimes I even go down to the 120 fps at in 720p and it still an amazing camera. And as of the photo side of this camera is amazing. Your love to this camera will build as long as you keep shooting with it. I wonder what kind of professional things you would do with it like commercials or music videos or even a mini documentary this camera is a beast you just need to get use to it.
Got my Canon R6 few months back ago and I just have to say that the overheating issue really messes everything up whenever it comes to video shoot. Recently I just got my brand new EOS R (on a limited stock available) and it’s really not bad when it comes to comparison with the R6. But I have to admit the R6 takes much better video quality than the EOS R. So what made me changed my mind to own a EOS R is all about the overheating issue on the R6. What’s best about it is that the EOS R records under H264 with Canon Log and it works well on most computers such as Windows PC during post productions without any lag. Yeah... I don’t owned a Mac. I think it’s worth having the EOS R to do video shoot making it as my A camera than the R6 as my B camera. So to those whom even think about selling their EOS R away, better think it twice.
I always get this soothing feeling when I watch your videos and I've always thought your footages were gorgeous. Now I see that it wasn't the C200, but your edit, colors and sound that made me feel that way. Great video man! Gave me tons of confidence as an EOS R user! Cheers man, We love you too.
Danny!!!! Got inspired AGAIN! Short story, due to the pandemic happening right now, it restricts me going out and shoot, and I slowly realise the my passion into photography and cinematography level are going LOW! When I finished watching the video I got inspired! Started to feel the vibe again and I can’t wait to head out to film something! Thanks DANNY, appreciate it! Stay safe!
EOS R is still super relevant in 2021 tbh (i would love to have the R5 but just not ready for the file size management of all the big files.) - just wish it does have 10bit options for us to use. love the video!
I love my EOS R! 😎 It is not always the numbers that count. It may not have the strongest technical features but it is a tool that can become the best companion you will always carry with you!
I am so excited for your channel to grow exponentially but I am also very sad for that day because I love seeing how much you're able to interact with all of us now :(
I bought this camera at the same exact time the R5 and R6 came out. Like Danny said it’s a great camera for starting out and even a huge step up from any of canons Rebels. I’d recommend this camera to anyone. That’s the highlight limitations, but there’s also so much you can control and take advantage of as well. And let me say it for everyone else, WE LOVE YOU TOO DANNY.
This is my current camera. It is really nice to see what you have captured using it. Open m eyes a bit more to what I can do with it. I do plan on creating some videos myself that I want to look as cinematic as possible. Thank you for the dope video Danny! I was hoping that maybe one day we could collaborate after I start growing. Since you were in Philadelphia I figured it wouldn't even be that far of a trip but now that you are in Maui, when that day comes, and it will come! I will gladly fly over to you LOL. I will happily visit Maui. Peace Danny! Love you too man.
Why don’t you get one of blackmagic pocket camera for your hiking and other stuff? I think they are a good alternative if you just wanna do a quick shoot with filmic quality and they are cheap
You need to build up that camera like crazy for the user experience that Danny is looking for. The pocket cameras from Black Magic can sometimes be bigger than Danny's C200 because of everything you need to add onto it.
Woah! Caught of guard with the unexpected upload. Ending the day on a high (from the other side of the world). Loved the footage a lot. But waiting for you to try the a7siii and share your thoughts, can't wait.
I thought you captured some awesome images. And your color grading looks incredible. That shot at 7:01 is the best! You would know the difference between what the camera captures and what you do to make it look so good. For me all I see is awesome footage.
Not sure if you'll see this comment, but I've been trying to figure out ways to make my talking head shots smooth and clear like yours. I just can't quite figure what it is that is making mine different from yours or others on TH-cam. I'm not sure if it's just not enough exposure, or it's the lens, or the body itself. It would be extremely helpful if I could just get a second set of eyes to look at it, and see if you could give me any feedbacks. Awesome video by the way, I've actually been contemplating switching over to Canon and this was the camera I was looking at!
Awesome video man ! I agree, you can totally get high quality looking images out of this camera. You just have to be more intentional as far as lighting and time of day. But also cinema cameras just have that extra sauce in the look lol
I love my EOS R. I think of it like a 16mm film camera, and shoot projects that vibe well with that aesthetic. The super 35mm crop that it shoots in 4k has been a cinematic standard for years. The Abyss, Terminator 2, and True Lies were shot in Super 35 so theres ways around the crop and it can be empowering if you strategize for it.
It rains all the time here in Hawaii and you’re going to need a body that can handle the elements. I would consider sticking with your 1DXII or maybe moving up to the 1DXIII. Or maybe wait for the R1.
Aloha from Nashville. Maui is "No Ka Oi"... I lived on Oahu for 22 years and loved it. Enjoy the Islands, and mahalo for making da kine videos. ... Looking forward to the new upgrade for the R... Hopefully they fix the issues.
I know is an old video, but have you tried canon Video X picture style on their webpage. It is based on the canon Camcorder X series picture style, it has better highlight rolloff, and protects the highlights. Another thing that I will try is using Highlight tone priority, this setting protects the highlights but introduces a little bit of noise.
Thank you Danny to help me feel like I can be a pro like you one day! My "Pro" rig is.... Pixel 3XL and a DjiM2 Gimbal Got it second hand for under 200$ (look like new). And with the rest of my money, I watch free video to get better! Love from Montréal xxx
One thing i did that worked with color grading on this camera is shooting in neutral color profile. 4-800 ISO minimum. 600 worked best for me 400 if its a little too bright 800 if its a little dark
Dude in my opinion it doesn't really matter what camera to use, it's more of what the person behind the camera can do with what he/she has and clearly you have done that and still made an awesome video with the EOS R.
Great video Danny! So stoked you moved to Hawaii! Such a beautiful place. I agree the eos r is good and if you don’t have a ton of dynamic range in your shot it can look great, but as you mentioned it’s a noticeable step down from the clog 2 in the c200 or other cameras. Hope you are doing well out there bro!
I think the cinematographer is WAYY more important than the camera and fortunately you're one of the greatest cinematographers I know of so you could have shot on a go pro and it would have looked like a cinema camera 😁congrats on the move Danny! Stay healthy, lot's of love ❤️
If price is an issue I'd recommend BMPCC 4K, since the newer version release, they are really cheap. Combine that with sigma 18-35 and the quality is beyond anything you can get for that price range. Just tested it out filming during the night at it's incredible...
Story story story.. if you shoot with intention and the material tells a story, it translates into better looking, more satisfying footage. It’s even more relevant today as basically all modern mirrorless cameras produce a “professional” image (to the average viewer).. it’s the storytelling that sets everything apart.
I still use this camera in 2023. Yeah it doesn't have 4K60, that's ok. But I actually prefer having the crop, helps me zoom in a bit more, which I need to maintain some distanct for the work I do. Love it!
I picked up a used EOS R and some lenses for it, and absolutely love it. Usually shoot in 1080 and up res it, but I don't shoot for pro purposes (yet). Loving the camera and it's colours out of camera, which usually meets the use case I have. You did an awesome job getting lots out of it, but you can definitely see where it's not "pro" in relation to cinema cameras or even the R5 or A7siii. Hope you're loving Maui. It's one of the most amazing places I've had the pleasure of visiting!
Super dope vid man, I just did a video comparing the Canon Eos R6 to my older Eos R too and I also noticed that the colors and shadows just break down pretty easily on the Eos R. Really glad I bought the R6 because I feel like the quality difference is day and night! I will keep the Eos R tho to have a dual cam setup for my TH-cam and other things!
Man, footage looked clean to me! Obviously breaking it down to the details it I can see what you mean. Overall though, pretty impressed. Also, Maui looks incredible! Hoping to make it there, been to Oahu twice!
I have had this camera for 2 years. It has been a good piece of gear in my setup. Looking to upgrade to the c70. I appreciate your thoughts on this. They support my experience with the EOS R. You are one of my favorite people on TH-cam. All the best to you and those you care about. -Mike
Great video! I have had the R for almost 15 months and it has been my work horse for wedding videography, apparel photo shoots, and corporate video. Is it great at anything? No. I is it good at most things? Yes. The ONLY complaint I have with it's video capabilities are the noisy shadows it produces when there isn't much light. Thanks Danny!
I’m using a C100 Mark 2, which is a cinema camera but is 8 bit 4:2:0. I learnt that you have to get everything right and are limited with what you can do in post, but as long as you know that you can still pull some excellent images from it. Still trying to understand c-log though.
Dude, I match footage from my EOSr + ninja v to my c300 Mark iii all the time. I would certainly call it capable of getting incredible, truly professional footage. I’ve struggled with it when just recording internally. But the quality bump that the ninja v gives it gets it there for me!
What I really appreciate is your honesty. Some youtubers (to no fault of their own) would “protect” a specific brand. They’d review 2 cameras and you’d watch it and you know they’ll leaning towards the other one but at the end of the review they’d say the most overused phrase in TH-cam history besides,( “So Yeah” 😂,) “ YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH EITHER ONE”. But in all seriousness, cameras now are extremely packed with features Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Blackmagic, etc. they have great capabilities. It’s a cliche but it’s true, it’s the one holding the camera that’ll make magic. I’m I sounding too much of a fanboy? 😂 Might be the Prosecco kicking in. Stay safe buddy.
I personally think you got the best bang for your buck; I just traded in my 5D mkiv for the new Sony A7c. It's basically the same thing as the EOS R, it was released a few months ago. What sold me on it was the 5 Axis IBIS and no crop in 4k. This little thing with the 28-70mm 2.8 from tamron is by far my favorite to use for fun stuff. I really want to start making TH-cam content and I already have a pretty solid "vlogging" camera, just can't seem to pull the trigger and start.
I’m still limping along with my refurbished Canon 80d and it takes great video in full hd. Your pretty lucky to have the eos r. It’s not the perfect camera, but it’s better than what I have for sure.
Hi Danny! I really admire you so much, I'm a big fan of yours lucky to witnessed your journey here YT. I hope you can visit the Philippines someday and have travel content from here.
Here I am thinking of getting an R when I upgrade from my RP, pair it the Ninja V and get that 10bit 4.2.2 and you're asking WHAT? Of course it's more than capable! EOS R is underrated!
The footage looked great!! I love my EOS R, it's my main camera now I use for commercial work and vlog stuff. Just did a while video on why I bought it over the other cameras that came out!

The EOS R looked really good! Nice new setup by the way!
What lense did you use?
i literally have been looking at getting this camera! so im so glad you made a video reviewing it
It’s pretty solid!!
How do you get the skies and your subject with perfect exposure ?
Remember to watch this video in 4k even if you only have a 1080p monitor because youtube compresses the 4k less - meaning better video quality.
Love it. Footage was awesome , bro!
Thank you so much!!
really good quality! Not regret at all that I bought it just few weeks ago
My question is...how much is that lens....
You can use denoiser ? Do you ? If you not why not ?
I'm curious to know your thoughts about that!
Loved it bro as usual, you're awesome. I got the R myself and loving it thus far.
How do you plan on shooting comericals on an island like Hawaii, isn't the client base very restricted? Or are you planing on full time TH-cam?
Super dope vid man, I just did a video comparing the Canon Eos R6 to my older Eos R too and I also noticed that the colors and shadows just break down pretty easily on the Eos R. Really glad I bought the R6 because I feel like the quality difference is day and night! I will keep the Eos R tho to have a dual cam setup for my TH-cam and other things!
Glad you did a video on this. I wondered how well the video really was on the eos r being that it had a fairly high bitrate.
-Mike
Would you ever come back to canon with r7/8 for personal travel since it shoots photo over fx3?
This is just the clarity i needed. Thanks Danny, love ya too❤️🤟
Great vid as always Danny and looking forward to seeing the results with the A7S3!!
I have problems with posterization/Banding. Any tips on how to fix it for this camera?
I’m still limping along with my refurbished Canon 80d and it takes great video in full hd. Your pretty lucky to have the eos r. It’s not the perfect camera, but it’s better than what I have for sure.
I use the EOS-R with a 16-35 F/4 on the Ronin RS3 Gimbal for my Real Estate videos, it works great!
Hi Danny! I really admire you so much, I'm a big fan of yours lucky to witnessed your journey here YT. I hope you can visit the Philippines someday and have travel content from here.
Damn I needed that lut
Where did you get that funky mini tripod!?! It looks good 👍
One of the tripod links below is broken.
Thanks for the video.
Here I am thinking of getting an R when I upgrade from my RP, pair it the Ninja V and get that 10bit 4.2.2 and you're asking WHAT? Of course it's more than capable! EOS R is underrated!
Beautiful shots dude!
The footage looked great!! I love my EOS R, it's my main camera now I use for commercial work and vlog stuff. Just did a while video on why I bought it over the other cameras that came out!
thanks for your insights. I have been using the EOS R for our travel and hiking videos for about a year. Works just right for my needs. 👍 I am interested to see what you thing about the Sony.
