Shouldn't the 2 club length area not nearer be a curved line not a straight line? I.e think about two circles (big circle with center at the flag and entry point being the radius. And the other being a smaller Circle center at entry point and two club lengths being the radius)

You didn't mention the option of hitting a provisional (from the T) if you suspect your ball has gone out of bounds. You also didn't mention, after 3 minutes of searching, what to do if the ball can't be found. I play twilight golf and moving down the fairway as quickly as possible is the objective, before dusk descends and you're playing the back nine in the dark. Going back to the T to re-hit a drive that disappeared in the red zone is not an option -- unless you want to really piss off the group behind and risk an altercation. Hitting a provisional would be the smart thing, but what if the OB is over a hill or someone plays your ball and moves on without you seeing them? Lost ball situations, as described, when you can't actually see what happens to your ball is something you need to cover.
Thanks for informative video. Today, my playing partner hit his ball into a water hazard. He determined the point where the ball crossed the hazard line and then took a lateral drop so far laterally beyond the rough and slope toward the water that the drop was on the fairway. I was puzzled. I told him that he should only be taking two club lengths from the margins of the hazard, no closer to the hole. He said, "Oh, I thought I could extend as far laterally as I wanted." I said, "No, you can only go as far back from the point of entry, if you go back on a line from the flag stick extended through the point where your ball crossed the margin of the hazard." (This was hard to put in writing just now to get it correct!) He has done this before and I thought he was just being sloppy on his drop. But, I think he just didn't know the rule. BTW, he had five birdies and shot a 73. He took a six on the par 4 where he hit it into the water. A guy that good should know the rules. Or, maybe not knowing the rules is why he shoots a 73.
There are "local" rules too. I highly recommend that unless you are playing in an event with something at stake that everyone chill out and enjoy the game.
Is there also an option to deem the ball as unplayable from where it is found in the hazard and play it from within two clubs length of where it lies (under a one shot penalty)
@@brianollerton3027 you cannot declare a ball unplayable if in a red or yellow penalty area. You must use the options listed.

Question - When you hit your ball in a water penalty area. You go look for your ball but can't find it. You drop in the correct area and hit your next shot. Then as you proceed to the green you notice your ball in the water penalty area. Can you then play your ball after you have already played your second ball.

Once you made the decision to take a drop for your ball entering a penalty area using one of the allowable options for a 1-stroke penalty and you played a shot with that ball, that ball becomes the new ball in play and the original ball cannot be used under any circumstance. It must be abandoned and you have to play the ball you dropped. You can pick the original ball up and put in your bag for use later if you like. Hope this helps!
Question: When dropping taking relief, how many times can you drop, i.e., if you don't like the conditions of your 1st drop, can you pick it up and drop again?
Tim thanks for the view and great question. If you drop your ball correctly at knee height and it doesn’t hit you on the way down, and it lands inside the relief area and stays within the relief area then the ball is in play and you cannot re-drop. Be sure to assess and plan out where you want to drop inside the relief area to get the best lie you can. Hope this helps and have a blessed day!
Can a red stake be removed if it interferes with my swing or stance? Or can I take relief from it?
Peter thanks for the view and great question! Red and yellow penalty area stakes are classified as movable obstructions and you are allowed to remove them out of the way and put back after your stroke if they interfere with you in any way including your ball’s lie, your stance, swing path, and even your line of play.
Out of bounds white stakes however, you are not allowed to move them under any circumstance.

Is it ok if u drop it at knee hight with a bent knee or does the knee have to be straight?
Manatee thanks for the view and comment! Great question. The rules state that a ball must be dropped at knee height meaning the height of the player’s knee at a standing position. This would mean that you cannot lean your knee in to make it closer to the ground seeing this would not be in a standing position but a crouched position. Hope this helps and great question! The backwards Extension drop rule needs to change (IMO)and should be a 1 club length circumference area. If you use the entry point, that would be the nearest to the hole point and anything behind that would not be closest to the hole.

What if your proper drop would be on a cart path? you can then get relief from that, correct?
Thanks for the view and great question! I’ve made a note to make a video showing this scenario later.
The proper procedure when a cart path is inside your relief area when taking penalty relief is to drop the ball on the cart path first.
Usually the ball will bounce or roll outside of the relief area on the first drop. If this happens drop again and place the ball at the spot of the drop if it rolls out of the relief area again.
If the cart path interferes with the ball’s lie, your stance, or or swing path you will be entitled to free relief at that point.

James thanks for the view and the question. Some courses will use red stakes in conjunction with red lines to mark the red penalty area. Some courses only use red stakes and no lines.

If you are virtually certain your golf ball has entered a penalty area then you can estimate where you think it crossed the penalty area and use that as your reference point.
If you are not virtually certain your ball is in the penalty area then you have to treat it as a lost ball and take a drop at the site of your last stroke with a 1-stroke penalty.

Thanks for the view and comment. The rules say that if you are virtually certain your ball has entered a penalty area then you don’t need to find your ball and you would work off of your estimated entry point to take relief with a 1-stroke penalty with the options the video illustrates.
If you are not virtually certain and the ball could be lost in the general area then you must use the rules for a lost ball in this case if after 3 minutes of searching you don’t find your ball.

Rule 43 C covers this clearly,::All five day and green fees must never ever ,speak whilst in the company of the Lady Captain,indeed it is strongly recommended that any cheese n Onions butty that has been in the bag for less than fifteen days,or indeed a pulled pork with mayo ,of the same vintage,be offered to her before she sets out for her daily five Ball, she loves a good mastication !!

With yellow penalty areas you have the same options as the Red except for you don’t have the option to drop within 2-club lengths of the entry point. Other than that the options are the same. Yes the entry point is where your ball first crosses the red or yellow lines or stakes either in the air or if it rolls over it.
Your explanation of dropping on option 3 does not match the USGA + R&A video explanation nor Rule 17.1 which states the drop may be within one club-length in ANY direction but not be nearer to the hole than the penalty area crossing point. It may roll forward from the drop point. Is this not correct?

Simply the same options for a Red Penalty Area except for with Yellow Penalty Areas there is NOT an option for taking a drop within 2-club lengths of the entry point with a 1-stroke penalty as with the red. That basically sums up the difference. Hope this helps!
I don’t think option 4 is accurate. Can’t drop closer to hole from original position prior to hitting into red penalty area. I don’t think
Cory, thanks for the view and comment! Option #4 of taking a drop at the site of my last stroke with a 1-stroke penalty you cannot drop any closer to the hole and that’s what I illustrated so the video is correct. Be sure to watch our 2023 rules update!

Barney thanks for watching our video! In the 2019 version of the golf rules they eliminated the option to take a drop on the opposite side of the red penalty area, formerly known as a lateral hazard prior to 2019.

Scott thanks for the view and comment. A player is not required to find their ball inside a penalty area in order to take penalty area relief. They need to be virtually certain that their ball entered the penalty area and if that is the case and the ball isn’t found they will only incur the 1-stroke penalty and choose one of the options of relief.
No additionally penalty if a ball is lost inside a penalty area. Hope this helps!
Actually, Scott, he did make reference to "whether or not the ball is found in the penalty area." The rules use an interesting phrase: known or virtually certain. If I hit into a pond and see the spash, I'd say it is "known" to be in the penalty area. If I hit toward a marsh and everything I observed (distance, height, direction, etc.) tells me there is a 95% chance that it is in the march, "I've virtually certain". On the other hand, if a ball is headed toward a penalty area and could have stopped before rolling in or gone over it, even though I believe it is in the area or strongly suspect it is there, that's not enough. I have a lost ball and replay from the previous spot. These judgment calls make for some interesting chat on the course.

Excellent video and explanation. Why the powers that be don't make the rules much, much simpler than they are is beyond me. They want more people to take up the game but then give them the most complicated rules of any sport to abide by - just doesn't make sense.
People are taking up the game in record numbers. Not all golf is competition golf.

To play devil's advocate why not carry a club with a 2m long shaft. The fact you carry it doesn't mean you have to play with it.
Maximum club length is 48” except for putter. But you can’t use your putter - so your 2m long shafted club can’t be used for a drop.
Ahh, the devil is in the details. Under the Rules of Golf no club (except a putter) can be more than 48 inches (1.22m). That's why the rule says longest club in your bag except the putter....that puts everyone on a more-or-less equal footing when measuring relief distances.
And because it is the Devil speaking, I would also comment that we are limited to 14 clubs whether we use them or not. If someone had a non-conforming club and it was the 15th club they incur penalties (up to four strokes per round).
