Can I Take the Penalty Strokes and Do This?
Clearly, rules makers didn't know golf balls would be $6 a piece when they made this rule.😅JK. I knew this rule. It's also a two stroke penalty and a dunce cap for asking what club someone just played off a par 3.
c
How do you place it where it was if there is no marker?
@@gphillimo rules say to estimate the spot to the best of your ability. Thanks for the view!
I didn't watch the video for a second time but I think you said that if your ball is teed up and you accidentally knock it off the tee it is no penalty, I agree. But you said it has to be an accident, which I do not think is correct. If you tee your ball up in the teeing ground you could kick it off the tee on purpose and it would not be a penalty as the ball is not in play. If I misunderstood my apologies.
One problem that would benefit from a convenient memory aid is whether the penalty scenario is one stroke or two and the relief option is one club length or two.
Awesome video!
🎉🍾🥂👍
Congratulations!!🎉
Thank you!!

The relief area you used was only half of what is allowed. You could have flipped the club to the right of your tee and done an entire semi circle of relief area. Granted, the most forward part would not be used because of the pipe.
Hi Jim! Excellent as usual. Greetings from Italy 👋🇮🇹
Many thanks!
If I have to lift and replace my ball in the bunker, can I clean it before dropping?
Great question! Yes you are allowed to clean your ball before replacing.
Maybe I heard it wrong but I think you said you need to use the longest club in your bag to measure your allowable drop area. I do not think this is true, you can use any club except a putter. I believe they excluded putters due to the excessive length of the long putters. So although most people will use a driver to give them a bigger drop area it is not necessary that you use it.
@@robertkennedy1737 according to the golf rules all relief areas are to be measured using your longest club in your bag excluding your putter and for most of us this will be your driver. One can use a shorter club in the bag to measure with so long as the ball lands and stays in an area the size of your longest club in your bag except for your putter. In other words it is not required to putt tees down but it is a good idea to do so. It is a good practice to use your longest club to measure and put tees down like shown in a serious competitive tournament to avoid a fellow competitor calling you out and claiming you dropped incorrectly.
when playing it as it lies, you said you get no relief if it's immovable like a cart path. Is this only true inside a red staked area? I always thought you got free relief on any man made structure, especially if it stops on / near a cart path
@@PJo336 that is correct in that you don’t get free relief from immovable obstructions inside red or yellow penalty areas. Golf rule 16. Thanks for the view!
Thanks for the explanation. I was faced with stinging bees around my ball in a penalty area and was wondering if my drop inside the penalty area and away from the bees was valid. My lie was actually worse after the drop, but at least I didn't get stung.
Is there also an option to deem the ball as unplayable from where it is found in the hazard and play it from within two clubs length of where it lies (under a one shot penalty)
@@brianollerton3027 you cannot declare a ball unplayable if in a red or yellow penalty area. You must use the options listed.
@@girgolfllc That's good to know that not one of the options available - thank you 👍
Is there also an option to deem it unplayable from where you find the ball in the hazard and play it (with a one shot penalty) from within two club lengths of where it lies,
@@brianollerton3027 you cannot declare a ball unplayable inside a red or yellow penalty area (new terms for hazards). You can only use the options for red or yellow penalty areas.
What if it’s match play???
@@ricardochicas142 in match play there is no penalty and you would play your ball as it lies and the ball that got struck must be put back.
So if you take the option on the line back in the bunker, you don't have to drop on the line here and can drop anywhere within the 1 club length as long as you aren't closer to the hole?
January 2023 Golf Rule Change Video #1 th-cam.com/video/1mwhOqb9gbg/w-d-xo.html
Probably the best explanation of the yellow stake rules and procedures. When dropping "back on the line", do you have to drop it on the line or are you able to drop it anywhere in the 1 club length limit?
@@JAW_73 thank you for the kind comment.! Yes you have to drop on the line as illustrated in the video effective January 1, 2023.
@@girgolfllc and for red and yellow drops, 2 clubs included, it can bounce closer to the hole as long as it stays in the "marked" area?
Do you have a video explaining how to drop when you are in a hazard past the hole or near the green? It would seem you aren't able to drop without being closer to the hole.
@@girgolfllc watching some other videos. So in a red stake, when going back in a line you can drop anywhere within the 1 club length, and it doesn't have to be dropped on the line like the yellow?
@@JAW_73 yes you must drop on the line anytime taking back on the line relief. This includes unplayable ball in general area, unplayable ball in bunkers, red and yellow penalty areas.
You cannot take a direct line back from the ball as long as the bunker allows, and ALSO go to either side one club length. You have to drop the ball as near to the line as possible.
January 2023 Golf Rule Change Video #1 th-cam.com/video/1mwhOqb9gbg/w-d-xo.html
Ok I got one for you. There are OB stakes but also a white line painted. But the white line stops in between 2 stakes and really curves into the out of bounds where it stops. What is out of bounds in that scenario? In other words do you assume that where the white line ends you can assume at that point that there should be a stake there? If you go strictly by the stakes the ball is out of bounds. If you were to put a new stake at the exact point that the line ends, the ball is in bounds. What do you think?
@@hughreilly2023 Good question! The golf course staff didn’t do a good job there so I would in a causal round ask those who you are playing with what they think. In completion round I would ask for a rules official or play 2 balls as prescribed in rule 3. Hope this helps!
better off not playing golf but to walk 5 miles.
Should be play the ball as it lies.... If i land in a divot in the middle of the fairway i have to play it... Yet someone who missed the fairway by 30 yds gets a free drop?
I agree golf rules should allow a free drop if your ball is in a divot in your fairway. Thanks for the view!
@@girgolfllcbut then you have to define “divot”. That could get really nit-picky. General mindset to have going into any game: you are playing in nature-never a guarantee of an ideal lie.
there appeared to be some grass NOT in the penalty area, why did u not drop there, is it because with the 1 club relief area you would still be on the cart path???
@@bournefree you must take complete free relief so this includes your balls lie, stance and swing path, therefore there isn’t enough room to have required complete relief.
First
So if you’re ball was lying just into the red penalty area and your stance was still in cart path, could you still get cart path relief if you claim to want to play the ball if it weren’t for the cart path?
@@mattshuskey thanks for the view and comment. If your ball is inside a penalty area you are not entitled to free relief from abnormal course conditions. I will be posting a video showing this very soon.
Thanks for the education, enjoying your videos. Cheers.
@@girgolfllc u can play from the penalty area without relief if you so desire!
@@bournefree yes that is correct you can always play your ball as it lies from a penalty area without penalty but you cannot take relief from abnormal course conditions if ball is inside a penalty area.
In the first case, isn't it possible to just play the ball from where it stopped after the accidental touch of a practice swing? (1 stroke either way.)
@@kegginstructure thanks for the view and comment. As shown and talked about in the video, if you play the ball from where it stops and don’t put it back you will incur 2 penalty strokes. 1 penalty stroke if you put the ball back. Hope this helps!
This scenario, just happened, at the par 3, 8th hole; during the 1st Round, of the Genesis Scottish Open. Collin Morikawa’s tee shot was on the green. Ludwig Aberg teed off and his ball struck the golf ball, of Collin’s and drove it off the green. My question is how do you know where to replace Collin’s golf ball, on the green; since no one was actually near it, to know the original placement?
Thanks for the view and comment! If a player knows that his ball has been moved by another ball then he or she must estimate to the best of their knowledge the original spot and place the ball. Sometimes this is an estimate. Hope this helps.
That’s why I came here lol. As far as placement it’s on tape so a rules official could watch it and help estimate the replacement too.
I have a question concerning identifying Nearest Point of Complete Relief for an Abnormal Course Condition when there is a Penalty Area also in close proximity. To use your Video where the NPCR is to the Left of the Path, what happens if there is only enough room between the Path and the PA to have the Ball in the General Area - but my (righthand) Stance has me inside the PA? Is this actually a Nearest Point of COMPLETE Relief, or do I get to find a legitimate PCR that includes a Stance in the GA?
I emailed this same question to the USGA Sunday and received an answer in less than 24 hours. (I used Diagram 16.1a in the Rule Book with B1 and P1 AND "added a parallel Penalty Area" to the Left of P1 as a reference.) P1 IS the correct NPCR, even with my Stance being inside boundary of the PA.
Great question! When taking relief from an abnormal course condition such as a cart path in the general area of the course, your NPCR must be in the general area. The NPCR cannot be inside a penalty area or any other area of the course that is not the general area so you may need to go the the other side of the path in the general area in this case. Hope this helps and I will make a video down the road for this thx.
@girgolfllc My original question concerned Stance inside the PA when taking Free Relief from the Cart Path. Visualize a 2 feet wide strip of GA in between the Left Edge of the Path and a parallel PA. USGA said my NPCR would be in the Grass Strip and my Stance is immaterial in terms of the PA. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have the usual Full Club Length Relief Area due to the proximity of the PA.
You didn't mention the option of hitting a provisional (from the T) if you suspect your ball has gone out of bounds. You also didn't mention, after 3 minutes of searching, what to do if the ball can't be found. I play twilight golf and moving down the fairway as quickly as possible is the objective, before dusk descends and you're playing the back nine in the dark. Going back to the T to re-hit a drive that disappeared in the red zone is not an option -- unless you want to really piss off the group behind and risk an altercation. Hitting a provisional would be the smart thing, but what if the OB is over a hill or someone plays your ball and moves on without you seeing them? Lost ball situations, as described, when you can't actually see what happens to your ball is something you need to cover.
You left out one thing. Can you rake the sand in the established zone before dropping the ball? I would assume not, but I'm curious considering all the footprints that would be made in the process of establishment. They weren't there before the ball entered.
@@zoktoberfest thanks for the view and comment! You are not allowed to rake the bunker before dropping under normal golf rules so be sure to watch where you step. I know I have many footprints in the bunker on the video and I should have mentioned this.
Before you drop your ball in the bunker, YOU CANNOT FLATTEN THE SAND WITH YOUR FOOTPRINTS! ADD ANOTHER PENALTY FOR IMPROVING YOUR LIE! 😮
Good stuff!
Thanks for this. - The new rule makes perfect sense. In the case of back-on-the-line, there is no reason whatsoever to prohibit the dropped ball from rolling closer to the hole, because you could have chosen yourself to drop it closer anyway. Since you are free to choose the distance from where to drop, the ball rolling closer is irrelevant. (As long as it doesn't come to rest closer to the hole than the original ball was.)
I think you talk too much
Should you avoid walking around in the bunker? If you have to drop within it, your footprints could ruin an otherwise good lie upon a drop.
Yes one should pay attention where they step and I should have mentioned that in the video but didn’t. Thanks for the view and comment!
Did you ever once say what yellow stakes mean?
30 seconds of info stretched to almost 8 minutes.
Tournament golf mark your ball. Buddy golf mark it clean it, line it up and start looking at the break so you can be ready to go as soon as it's your turn. (as long as your not in anyone's way) If some one putting at 6 o'clock another 3 o'clock another 11 o'clock all but your balls down and start reading the green.. This will speed up play 30 - seconds to two minutes a hole equal 20-30 minutes of faster golf. Thank you all the people behind you.
Excellent video.
Love these videos, however as can be expected there are many situations in golf where the situation is not quite as clear. For example, at our Club, Member Member Tournament. Par 3 water in front of the green with a drop zone. Player hits ball and estimates that it went into the hazard but did not see a splash. Hits ball from drop zone, skulls it across the green into another red hazard. As the player is walking up to the green, sees his original ball just outside the hazard on the opposite side of the hazard. As you can imagine, he now thinks this ball is in play, chips it onto the green and makes par. What would be the ruling? In my mind as soon as he hit from the drop zone that ball is in play and he should be penalized 2 strokes for hitting the wrong ball?
Thanks for the view and comment. Yes once the player has decided to play from the drop zone with a 1-stroke penalty this is the new ball in play from that point forward once he strikes the ball and the original ball must be abandoned and cannot be played.
if you hit the green (island) and the ball then goes in the water where can you drop the ball '
The reference point is always the last point the ball crossed the margin of the penalty area. In this example it would be where it crossed after landing on the green even if it flew over the penalty area. Thanks for the view!
Many years ago, I did a shot from that exact lie. Club broke, my hand needed medical attention.
Sorry to hear that and I hope you have fully recovered. Thanks for the view!
Can you legroom the sand after stomping around setting up you drop area before you redrop?
You aren’t allowed to rake the bunker or use your foot to improve the lie in the bunker before you take a drop. Be sure to watch where you step when picking the ball up. I should have mentioned that in the video. Thanks!
If two balls are lying close to each other, and the ball that must be moved cannot be replaced in its original lie because the first person to play causes a divot or other ground condition that prevents the other player from recreating his original lie, how would you proceed?
Unfortunately they will have to put the ball back in its original spot. Technically they won’t be able to replicate the lie but must play from the same spot. This would be no different than if their ball landed in a divot in the fairway. Great question!
❤
You do a really good job clarifying these rulea
Thanks!!
I wish to point out that in playing stroke play as you said at the beginning, there is no opponent. Your opponent only occurs in match play.
Are you saying this tule does not apply to match play?
@ricardochicas142 actually in Match Play there is NO Penalty for a Putted Ball striking either a Partner's Ball or an Opponent's Ball. Again Your Ball remains where it comes to rest and the Other Ball is returned to and replaced on its Original position (as best as can be determined).
