As soon as you go into a red staked area you have options . . . Just the rules everyone knows this. Out of bounds and your in trouble. My home course 2nd hole miss left your out of bounds miss right your in a hazard . . . The miss is right as you have options for one penalty shot. Hazards are part of golf as are the rules.
There's a clip online of Rory deciding to take his shot even though it was right up against a rock in some sandy stuff. He takes it, smashes a cameraman and has an even worse next shot. Maybe that was in his mind.
Most people would pull that 8 iron 3rd into the creek, with that hanging lie, or shank it into the trees, that's why the decision, for most, was wrong. But its Rory!
@Fred Wills The amount of golfers I see pull hanging lies always shocks me, probably because they assume they will shank/push it right and they come way over the top and close the clubface in fear of the push. Surely Rory knew he could smack it into the fairway 50yds etc... and have wedge in. He really relied on assuming it was a par 3 from where he placed and that no matter what, he would make 3
Thats a bugger of a hole too - I've hit the creek on the left side more times than i can count - plus its the last hole too so, the opposite of a strong finish.
I don't understand, why he did not drop the ball on the other side near the fairway. As the creeek is on the left side of the fairway and the ball crossed the penalty area from the right side, dropping on the right side of the penalty area should have been right thing to do, or do I miss something?
They changed the rule 2019. However if it's still part of the local rule, then the committee would let him do it, but in this case; it was removed or it was never there as part of the local rule.
It landed to the left of the red line and bounced back into the penalty area from that side. Because the local rule to allow relief on either side was not in effect his only option for lateral relief was on the left side.
@@Malincanada Thanks for the explaination. I did not know, that it landed on the left side of the red line. I thought it came from the right side and went directly into the hazard. In this case it would be not logically to drop on the left side. Now it makes toal sense. Thank you.
can you decide to play it as it lies, walk over the ball and decide no i want to play it from previously played and walk back to the tee box? is this allowed?

@@GolfRulesQuestions Could you tell me what is the Local Rule reference number you mentioned in your commentary. I’d like to tell my clubs committee so hopefully they will adopt it on a red penalty area at my course.
@@1HappyGolfer Refer to Committee Procedures 8B-2 - "Relief on Opposite Side of Red Penalty Area". A Committee can introduce a Local Rule to allow lateral relief on the opposite side of the red penalty area as an extra relief option under Rule 17.1d. The reference point for the relief area is the estimated point on the opposite edge of the penalty area that is the same distance from the hole as the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.
I am certain the red penalty area is always there, and marked with a red line or stakes, or both. My educated guess would be that the club committee have adopted the local rule (providing equidistant or opposite side relief) for their regular member competitions, but I suspect the PGA Tour did not want it in place for their tournament. They probably want their elite players to play from the non-fairway side should their ball last cross the edge over there. A club committee may adopt this local rule simply for speed of play purposes allowing their members to remain on the fairway side to take their relief. Even without the equidistant local rule in place for the PGA Tour event, the red penalty area still provides the player 3 relief options under Rule 17.1d
Starting 2019, "opposite side" option was removed. Reduced options from 5 to 4. New options for red stake are: 1. Play as it lies (no penalty); 2. Return to previous spot with one penalty (stoke and distance); 3. Drop back "on a line" with one penalty; 4l Lateral (2 club lengths) with a penalty. Lateral is only from point where ball crossed penalty line.
Golf should be play the lie, no matter where. Just like Shooter McGavin had to do. Play it off of Frankenstein's foot. Water landing? You get an 8. Also 2X par should be the maximum score per hole.
No wonder golf is ‘dying’ - I’ve played at low h’cap for x40yrs - and always in weekly Comps, but the rules are ridiculously complicated and most players break them without even realising and with no intention to do so. The game is supposed to be FUN and relaxing for us amateurs, but there are far more rules in this PASTIME than at bloody work!
The problem with playing that I see is how deep in the rough it is. The chance is high that he isn't able to get it out and the ball would roll into the creek. By moving it he is able to get it out from under that deep rough. Even a left-hander like Bubba (because we know Phil would 100% go for that shot as it lied) I don't think would go for that shot despite it being significantly easier for him since it wouldn't be on a downslope.
I still don’t get why the rules official allows or instructs him to replace the ball (in a better lie) AFTER he has already placed it in a position that is behind the tee peg and where the official was pointing. This to me, made his next shot much easier as the second time he placed it, it was in a spot with less rough around the ball than the first placement. Surely once it had been placed the first time the ball was in play and he has to hit it from there. Almost seems like the rules official gave him an unfair advantage and you could say that was the difference between him winning versus being in a play off.
Playing Devil’s advocate, if you are dropping a shot anyway would it not be a smarter play to chip it back onto the fairway (anywhere) and then have your next shot from there? Kudos to Rory for hitting an amazing shot with what was still a difficult lie but I reckon 80%+ of golfers could not have landed it on the green from where Rory ended up hitting it…
The assumption is that the ball would end up in a playable position. Given the lie and the stance, that is a significant assumption. If it doesn't work out, you're in a worse position and still need to incur a penalty stroke to get out. Let's remember that Rory was trying to win the tournament as opposed to simply saving a stroke. He needed a five to win, and that's what he did.
When the player dropped their ball, they dropped it close to the edge of their relief area so that the ball rolled outside their relief area. They did this again for their re-drop, and this meant that they were then able to place their ball.
He took a one stroke penalty to give himself a much better lie and stance. If he played it as it lay, it was a much more difficult stance and lie that could have easily cost him more than one stroke.
Rory needed to make no more than a bogey (five) on this hole in order to win the tournament. Scoring par or better would not have made a difference, therefore he did not need to take any extra risk(s) just to make a better score than he needed. By taking a penalty drop, Rory ensured he would get a reasonable lie for his 3rd stroke, which he did and make a reasonable shot to the green. He only needed to two-putt for his five and for the win.
Harry Diamond deserves full credit here, calmed McIlroy down and took full advantage of the rules

Because it's irrelevant to the point of the video, that's why.

The rules are there, sometimes they go for you sometimes they go against you.
As soon as you go into a red staked area you have options . . . Just the rules everyone knows this. Out of bounds and your in trouble. Yes, even though it very closely resembled a 3-point shot, it actually was a golf shot.

No. Did you think it should be changed?
There's a clip online of Rory deciding to take his shot even though it was right up against a rock in some sandy stuff. He takes it, smashes a cameraman and has an even worse next shot. Maybe that was in his mind.
Marvelous decision from the young Lepricorn.
I blade an attempted flop shot into the club house and knock out the waitress trying to serve cocktails.
The announcer: "and that was a golf shot"
I don't understand, why he did not drop the ball on the other side near the fairway. As the creeek is on the left side of the fairway and the ball crossed the penalty area from the right side, dropping on the right side of the penalty area should have been right thing to do, or do I miss something?
pretty sure it’s nearest point of relief
@@lambohd8160 Did they change the rules for lateral hazard?
Yes, that is permitted.
but then he'd be shooting 4 from wherever the next ball lands instead of 3 from a tolerable lie in the rough.
Yes, but three off the Tee isn't a great place to be........ as it turned out he was on the green for three.
@@nickmaclachlan5178 He was shooting 3 from beside the ditch, not on the green for 3. Drop = 1 stroke penalty.

@@stuartmcphee6009 Also known as "the old way".
SO, why did they set up the course with red stakes if the opposite side option was not available?

Insane how long it takes!
Obviously it worked out fine, but I thought he could easily hit it onto the fairway - with no loss of shot.
Go back and take a look at the stance and the lie. It was anything but easy.
No loss if shot? From the tee, of course. But from where he ended up, he's hitting 3 regardless. And he didn't like the stance or the lie.
Golf should be play the lie, no matter where. Just like Shooter McGavin had to do. Play it off of Frankenstein's foot. Water landing? You get an 8. Also 2X par should be the maximum score per hole.

Interesting, Even as good as he ended up hitting it, look how the hanging lie still pushed his ball to the right side of the green.
What is a red pony area?
It is where horses go when they have been naughty.
Why did Rory drop so close to the red line? I thought he had 2 club lengths from the red line?
To be certain that it crossed the line twice more. Then you have the option to place the ball. This gives you better options and a better lie.
Did Rory just hit an 8-iron roughly 200 yards???
Hey Rory! Light the candle!
You could tell by his feet placement when he teed off that it was going left, weird for a player of that caliber.
All the adds blocked most of the view when he made the shot to the green...
Most of us only follow the rules very loosely. I’ve never played in a foursome where guys aren’t fluffing the ball, lifting and cleaning etc...
It has been said that some golfers give up the game to become Roman Catholics because the rules are much easier to understand.
Golf is definitely not dying. It’s more popular than ever.
Love the commentary but we gotta rev up that energy a wee bit lad!
I have to ask, are you Scottish? I do agree that the commentary is not that exciting

Dotty I love your xomentating6
Don't ever leave us
Pls and thank you
Am I stupid? Wouldn’t it have been a better idea and play it, like at the least you should be able to chip it to the fairway for a better shot
Why isn’t that stroke distance
Because the ball is in a penalty area, not out of bounds, so he get's to drop relative to where the ball crossed the margin.
I was behind the green cheering him on here
Ask Phil!!
He’d know the best way to make it!! LOLLLL
You put up previous videos on Rory’s. last shot that I couldn’t see. Thanks for a good video but terrible ending.
You gotta play bad golf to play good golf
Fyi, he two-putted to win the tournament (2021 Wells Fargo Championship).

Comments: the ruthless diaper sits on car photogenically eating carrots vends bible car
Playing Devil’s advocate, if you are dropping a shot anyway would it not be a smarter play to chip it back onto the fairway (anywhere) and then have your next shot from there? Kudos to Rory for hitting an amazing shot with what was still a difficult lie but I reckon 80%+ of golfers could not have landed it on the green from where Rory ended up hitting it…
Completely agree. But they are not 80% of golfers. They know what they are doing....we all would mess it up. Lol
Perhaps, if he had a good lie and stance. But he had neither.
Can anyone dumb this down for a non golfer? Interested to understand what made this such a smart play
