That was just soooo calming 👏😁. And yet so very correct. I must admit that on some bikes and cars (clutches mainly) I have left them to self bleed over night (air will eventually rise to the top with cap off). Excellent video.
That’s a good bit of kit, I have a smaller Version I use on my hydraulic brakes on the Mountain bike, it works every time, it’s a big saving if you can do it your self. Cheers Del ⚙️🔩🔧👍

@@Moonfleet41 Just something you do (or perhaps Penny does in editing), where when you grab an item, such as a part, tool, can, etc., there is a slight pause. It's actually appreciated because it allows us time to see exactly what you're picking up.
Perfect timing Del, just about to bleed the rear brake on my venerable GL1100 after rebuilding the calliper. Next on the list is bleeding both front and rear systems on my 1977 Z1000 after rebuilding the master cylinders and callipers. I have in the past used a system that attached to the master cylinder and used the air reservoir from a tyre to force the brake fluid through supply lines. Worked pretty well to be honest, but the reverse system shown in your video seems to do the trick nicely. Decided to order one using your link. Ride safe sir.
Most welcome Michael, I've seen those gadgets too, you can force down or up, it doesn't matter, but in both cases there will always be a little air trapped and the benefit of this syringe is that it can safely draw the contents of the reservoir back out in order to empty it and you can force it back in the bottom end again to get a better and more solid feel... and it was a real value purchase at just a shade over £20.
Only problem with using a system to force the fluid from the master cylinder is you need a cap to fit. In the past when I used this method I had an old master cylinder cap which I drilled to accept the nipple. With the reverse method all you do is connect up to the calliper nipple. Just received confirmation of my order for the tool.
@@michaeljohnson-li5nn That's good news Michael, assuming it was Spanner Monkey from the link they'll have it under way in the morning, and you should get it promptly.. a tiny tip that may help you when you come to do it, try wrapping a couple of turns of plumbers tape around the nipple first as it will make a better seal that then won't leak any fluid as you force it in, you will notice you need a fair bit of force, and the plumbers tape stops anything weeping out or air getting drawn in... Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.. Del.

I used a home made syringe approach to my systems as well last winter. Worked very will I agree. The front brake would have bled even faster if I would have noticed sooner that the lever was adjusted all the way close to the bar. Haha. Live and learn but that was pretty dumb haha. All the best.

Handy bit of kit that syringe, a bit more robust than the 100mil one I got off the internet for £5.00 last year , reverse bleeding is defiantly the way to go for dry lines and speed .

Interesting. I’m about to refill my Honda front brake system after a Master Cylinder rebuild. I think I’ll try purging and refilling from the caliper as you did. Can but try.

I have this job waiting for me when I get home. However, it's complicated by my brakes being linked so having to bleed through a proportioning valve etc. Going to try this reverse method.
I read this on another TH-cam video on if your bike has ABS: "the abs block cannot have contaminants get into it and there are contaminants that get into the brake line and they make their way down to the caliper just because the contaminants are heavier and they make their way to the farthest point in the system the lowest point in the system." So I think on a bike w/ABS that needs a fluid change, a conventional Purge first would be a good idea.
Fair point mate, but it's worth remembering that water content builds up in the reservior through the vent holes in the cap, and that water eventually leads to corrosion in the master cylinder, you wouldn't want to push that down through the ABS pump, so there are contaminants in both ends, making that practice largely irrelavant, just flush enough fluid through the system to wash it all out..!

Oh my goodness, how do they think they are, a Bentley dealer! That's ridiculous... and probably the exact reason why bike owners are being driven to deal with their own maintenance, they are slowly pricing themselves out of the market, there is no justification for this kind of extortion when the technician who actually carries out the work probably earns little more than $30 per hour, just do the math, somebody's getting rich.

Yes mate, slow steps going forward, we try to dodge most of the time and keep safe, but slowly things are getting better here, even been out for a few bike rides now full lockdown is over, what a strange 18 months it's been, glad to hear thigns are improving there too, stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!
One comment mentioned duel bleeding… finally gave me straight answer.. do left, then right… it is challenging get it 100% bleed out… doing other way.. I’m olde school, hates new changes in the system. Learned a lot simpler way you shown!! Awesome!! GROAN!! More tools to purchase!! Lol 😂 thank goodness at least cheap tool!
Yep, depends on how they are routed, some go from Brake master to Brake Caliper to Brake Caliper, some have the split before the first Brake Caliper in like a Y.
wobbly sauce: dead right, the current Triumph adventure bikes run that tandem system with the left caliper piggy backed off the right, and that's even easier to bleed, just push it all in to the left caliper, it goes straight to the master cylinder via the right caliper!
You have a great channel,,,I do my brakes this way as well,,,I seem to be missing something though,,,,when I use the syringe to push the fluid through and the master cylinder is then filled, do I close the the bleeder then light pump the brake to build pressure? OR once its filled open and close the bleeder while pumping the brakes? I seem to have a hard time building pressure and feel Im just missing one small thing,,,,TY
It's not anything you're doing buddy.. it can be tricky. once you fill from the bottom like this, it can help to just bleed down a few pumps in the old regular conventional way to get any small air bubbles out that may have dragged in up the side of the bled valve thread while it was open... then close it off and you should have a firm lever.... you can tape it in over night too which will also improve it.!
@@Moonfleet41 TY, one more question, I have a shadow sabre vt1100, I rebuilt the front brake caliper, cleaned pistons, greased moving arms, it looks great, I put new sintered pads in, the wheel moves pretty free on the jack so its not impeded, but there appears to be some scraping when I apply the brake hard, I only have 5 miles on these pads, is this just an issue where the pads need to bed in over the course of a few hundred miles and these are normal sounds or is there something perhaps I did wrong and should re-check? TY again for all your hard work
I'm going to buy one of those bad boys...... To bleed my back brakes on my Harley Davidson sportster. I take the broom handle stick to the brake pedal And pumped it with one hand and loosen the valve with the other hand to bleed the break......
i spent the better part of my day trying bleed my front brakes and all i get is a very spongy feel at best, they do grab though.. im hoping the reverse bleed works. i rebuilt the master cylinder, rebuilt the caliper, new pads and steel braided lines.
Another great tutorial mate is it the same method for a bike with abs bike looks fantastic needs putting in a case for looking at too good to ride on our roads lol all the best mate untill the next one take care

No John, it's just the same, this is method carried out at Harley dealerships when they fit ape hangers which means a longer brake line... just don't switch the ignition on when the bike is in bits (but then you wouldn't do that anyway).
Hey Del,great vid as always! Quick question, I'm about to do my Speed 4 system (over the mudguard from rh cal to lh) would you start from the nearest caliper to the m/cyl, or furthest away? (L.Hand)Had to put a new hose from m/cyl to rh caliper (raised bars).

Hi John, great to hear from you, and thanks for your kind words... I think I said 'tape' the lever in, so yes, the idea is that pulling the lever in and fixing it there pressurises the system, shrinks the bubbles to a fraction of their size and over the course of time, usually overnight, they will drift up to the top and out in to the resevoir... then in the morning, rip the tape off, pump the lever a few times and you'll notice it's rock solid!

Great vid but I’m still having problems!! I’ve got the bleed nipple open and pushing as hard as I can on the syringe but the fluid doesn’t seem to be going in the caliper? Almost like the nipple isn’t undone.. but it is.. master cylinder cap off so not that.. any help please. Paul
Hi Paul.. can't diagnose this without seeing it really mate.. you didn't say what bike it is, is it ABS, had it got self bleeder valves (they have a one way flow lock) is it a linked system mate..!! and does it bleed downwards in the conventional way..(just to check if there's a blockage..?)
Hi Del, you mentioned to clamp the brake lever on, over night, is that with or without the resivoir lid fastened? I’ll be having a go at bleeding my k7 750 soon so any tips would be greatly received mate.
Hi buddy, always with the lid on if it's overnight, remember we leave the cap on the bottle it came from so the fluid doesn't absorb moisture from the air, that includes your master cylinder too... so seal it up before you pull the lever in... you will notice a great improvement! Let us know how you get on...
How is this done if you have 2 individual front brake lines? Seems like you might need to occassionally siphon off some fluid from the reservoir when doung the 2nd line.
Not quite Thomas, fill the left side first, then the second you see fluid emerge in the bottom of the reservoir, STOP.. then switch to the right side, and as you fill it, you'll see bubbles foam up through the bottom as the air is forced up the right hose.. then as soon as the air bubbles stop, the fluid will fill...and you're done. !
Thanks for the video, Delboy! I have a question: I'm approaching a change of brake line on my Keeway K-light 125 as I need a longer hose to install mini apes. My bike has combined brake system (CBS) So there's two bleed valves on the front caliper. Do I need to bleed both or can I just bleed the one line that goes from master cylinder to the caliper and leave the rest of the system be? Thanks!
@@Moonfleet41 thanks for the reply! So it's not abs, it's cbs There is only one caliper per brake. The front brake has one hose that goes from the pump to the caliper and another one that goes from a caliper to what I believe is a switch? And then to the brake line. Same deal with the brake line. One caliper, two hoses. Each caliper has two bleeding nipples, one on the top and another in the middle
@@Uncle_Tijikun I'd need to see this to be exact..but from what you're describing are the two caliper linked? does the secondary hose run between the two calipers front and back then ?
@@Moonfleet41 no the secondary hoses are connected to a third apparatus that I'm told it's used to modulate the amount of braking that gets combined. I'm aware it's not the best explanation, apologies 🤣
You don't say which Triumph, but if it's the same as this bike, Try slowly working the lever in and out while pushing the fluid.. two person job obviously, but that should help open the valve in the master cylinder.!
Start with the left, then the moment you see fluid emerge in the bottom of the reservoir, lock it off, and switch to the right. You'll see bubbles for a while as the air from the right hose is pushed out, then the rez will fill, and you're done. !

It's the best way to bleed a brake or clutch system but don't forget to move the calipers. Sometimes bubles are trapped in the pistons housings.
Fastest bleeding I have ever seen. I'm sold on it.

Oh my goodness, how do they think they are, a Bentley dealer! That's ridiculous... and probably the exact reason why bike owners are being driven to deal with their own maintenance, they are slowly pricing themselves out of the market, there is no justification for this kind of extortion when the technician who actually carries out the work probably earns little more than $30 per hour, just do the math, somebody's getting rich.

You can also use DIY set: get a 100ml syringe from pharmacy and a proper diameter hose (5mm, from any car parts store). Total cost 1-2 euro. Cheers!

Yes mate, slow steps going forward, we try to dodge most of the time and keep safe, but slowly things are getting better here, even been out for a few bike rides now full lockdown is over, what a strange 18 months it's been, glad to hear thigns are improving there too, stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

One comment mentioned duel bleeding… finally gave me straight answer.. do left, then right… it is challenging get it 100% bleed out… doing other way.. I’m olde school, hates new changes in the system. Learned a lot simpler way you shown!! Awesome!!

Yep, depends on how they are routed, some go from Brake master to Brake Caliper to Brake Caliper, some have the split before the first Brake Caliper in like a Y.
wobbly sauce: dead right, the current Triumph adventure bikes run that tandem system with the left caliper piggy backed off the right, and that's even easier to bleed, just push it all in to the left caliper, it goes straight to the master cylinder via the right caliper!

Same technique is used on hydraulic bicycle brakes. (only there's no reservoir which makes it a bit more of a pain)...

You have a great channel,,,I do my brakes this way as well,,,I seem to be missing something though,,,,when I use the syringe to push the fluid through and the master cylinder is then filled, do I close the the bleeder then light pump the brake to build pressure? OR once its filled open and close the bleeder while pumping the brakes? I seem to have a hard time building pressure and feel Im just missing one small thing,,,,TY
It's not anything you're doing buddy.. it can be tricky. once you fill from the bottom like this, it can help to just bleed down a few pumps in the old regular conventional way to get any small air bubbles out that may have dragged in up the side of the bled valve thread while it was open... then close it off and you should have a firm lever.... you can tape it in over night too which will also improve it.!
@@Moonfleet41 TY, one more question, I have a shadow sabre vt1100, I rebuilt the front brake caliper, cleaned pistons, greased moving arms, it looks great, I put new sintered pads in, the wheel moves pretty free on the jack so its not impeded, but there appears to be some scraping when I apply the brake hard, I only have 5 miles on these pads, is this just an issue where the pads need to bed in over the course of a few hundred miles and these are normal sounds or is there something perhaps I did wrong and should re-check? TY again for all your hard work
I'm going to buy one of those bad boys...... To bleed my back brakes on my Harley Davidson sportster. I take the broom handle stick to the brake pedal And pumped it with one hand and loosen the valve with the other hand to bleed the break......
i spent the better part of my day trying bleed my front brakes and all i get is a very spongy feel at best, they do grab though.. im hoping the reverse bleed works. i rebuilt the master cylinder, rebuilt the caliper, new pads and steel braided lines.
It certainly should mate, it's a simply principle of physics that air will always rise in a liquid, so forcing up to the top simply helps it along!

No John, it's just the same, this is method carried out at Harley dealerships when they fit ape hangers which means a longer brake line... just don't switch the ignition on when the bike is in bits (but then you wouldn't do that anyway).

Hi John, great to hear from you, and thanks for your kind words... I think I said 'tape' the lever in, so yes, the idea is that pulling the lever in and fixing it there pressurises the system, shrinks the bubbles to a fraction of their size and over the course of time, usually overnight, they will drift up to the top and out in to the resevoir... then in the morning, rip the tape off, pump the lever a few times and you'll notice it's rock solid!
In my opinion best project you have done Dell ,like the finished look. Do you still have the street fighter ,the Hog,and the Hayabusa ?

Great vid but I’m still having problems!! I’ve got the bleed nipple open and pushing as hard as I can on the syringe but the fluid doesn’t seem to be going in the caliper? Almost like the nipple isn’t undone.. but it is.. master cylinder cap off so not that.. any help please. Paul
Hi Paul.. can't diagnose this without seeing it really mate.. you didn't say what bike it is, is it ABS, had it got self bleeder valves (they have a one way flow lock) is it a linked system mate..!! and does it bleed downwards in the conventional way..(just to check if there's a blockage..?)
Hi Del, you mentioned to clamp the brake lever on, over night, is that with or without the resivoir lid fastened? I’ll be having a go at bleeding my k7 750 soon so any tips would be greatly received mate.
Hi buddy, always with the lid on if it's overnight, remember we leave the cap on the bottle it came from so the fluid doesn't absorb moisture from the air, that includes your master cylinder too... so seal it up before you pull the lever in... you will notice a great improvement! Let us know how you get on...

Curious... did you prefer this method over the way you did it with the Busa?
Both ways work for the front, but the rear needs some help as its horizontal.
How is this done if you have 2 individual front brake lines? Seems like you might need to occassionally siphon off some fluid from the reservoir when doung the 2nd line.
Not quite Thomas, fill the left side first, then the second you see fluid emerge in the bottom of the reservoir, STOP.. then switch to the right side, and as you fill it, you'll see bubbles foam up through the bottom as the air is forced up the right hose.. then as soon as the air bubbles stop, the fluid will fill...and you're done. !

I have a question: I'm approaching a change of brake line on my Keeway K-light 125 as I need a longer hose to install mini apes.
My bike has combined brake system (CBS) So there's two bleed valves on the front caliper. Do I need to bleed both or can I just bleed the one line that goes from master cylinder to the caliper and leave the rest of the system be?

Where is it 'combined' to mate?.. rear caliper, or is it ABS?, are there two front calipers, are they piggyback linked?.. more info would help mate !

So it's not abs, it's cbs
There is only one caliper per brake. The front brake has one hose that goes from the pump to the caliper and another one that goes from a caliper to what I believe is a switch? And then to the brake line. Same deal with the brake line. One caliper, two hoses. Each caliper has two bleeding nipples, one on the top and another in the middle
@@Uncle_Tijikun I'd need to see this to be exact..but from what you're describing are the two caliper linked? does the secondary hose run between the two calipers front and back then ?
@@Moonfleet41 no the secondary hoses are connected to a third apparatus that I'm told it's used to modulate the amount of braking that gets combined.

I tried revers bleeding on my triumph but the break fluid will not go up into the master cylinder. Any advice would be good. Tia
You don't say which Triumph, but if it's the same as this bike, Try slowly working the lever in and out while pushing the fluid.. two person job obviously, but that should help open the valve in the master cylinder.!
I get fluid up to the master cylinder but it stops there. Nothing gets into the reservoir ,,any ideas?

Are you suppoused to use a crush washer between the caliper and banjo bolt or just the bolt head and banjo bolt. Something thats really confusing me becuase most videos I watch I dont see one
Perhaps you didn't spot them, but believe me in every banjo union I put a copper washer either side of it.

Pretty much, you just need to adapt the process so you follow the right path with bikes that have split, or linked, brakes.

A lot of brake fluids can ruin paint, so be careful.
Old fashioned DOT3 will burn paint, pretty much all bikes now use DOT4, and even better DOT5.1.. no problems.
