Entombed Wolverine Blues is a masterpiece and blueprint for death n roll. Cheers mate
Agreed Mark. Cheers fella 👍
Good stuff. 'Subhuman Race' and 'Chaos A.D.' are both excellent albums to me. Seems that a lot of DM bands went in a more death 'n' roll direction in the mid-late 90s. I like 'Diatribes' too. 'Spheres' rules! :) 'Swansong' is really good too... there are so many catchy hard-rocking riffs on that album.
Agreed Kim, Swansong is a decent album. Subhuman Race, Chaos AD and Spheres are all excellent album, especially Spheres. Cheers mate 👍
As a musician I’ve always had a lot of admiration for bands that want to experiment with their sound… regardless really of whether it works or not! You’ve got to do what makes you happy creatively haven’t yer! Liam nailed it when he described that ‘Gorefest’ album as sounding like the Death Metal equivalent of ‘Thin Lizzy’!🤘🏻
Always a risk when a band changes direction, but like you say mate you gotta do what makes you happy. Sometimes change works and sometimes not. Cheers as always mate 👍
Great final part to your bands changing in the 90's series James! Gorefest and Napalm Death I haven't listened to, Dismember I do wanna check out. Especially that album, Massive killing capacity. I've heard a couple of tracks from Wolverine blues, need to check out the full album. From what I remember it was pretty cool. I need to check out more from Pestilence, I haven't heard Spheres. Swansong and the debut are the only Carcass albums I have left to listen to. So, I haven't really heard any of these, but I will. And im sure I would enjoy almost all of them, I do like the Death n roll style and I love the latest Pestilence album. Nice one, cheers James 😊🤘🏻🤘🏻
I'm fairly new to Gorefest myself Josh. Wolverine Blues is a beast from start to finish. I think the whole Death and Roll style is a good gateway style for people who want to get into Death Metal rather than throwing themselves in at the deep end with something like Cryptopsy's None So Vile 😂😂 Cheers mate as per usual 👍
@mrboulder9714 Ahh ok, that's fair enough man. I have heard a couple of tracks by them but not a lot, plus I always get them confused with Gorguts!!
Yeah I've been meaning to check out Wolverine blues in full for some time, I have heard the first 2 Entombed albums and they're great! Yeah definitely, it's the perfect starting point for anyone looking to get into Death Metal. It still has the vocals but the songs and riffs are simpler and more palettable. Haha, yeah Cryptopsy probably isn't the place to start, no! 😂😂 You're welcome mate as always 🤘🏻🤘🏻😊
Massive Killing Capacity was my introduction to dismember as was swansong with carcass far from put me off it made me want to investigate their back catalogues further I've really enjoyed this little series james great stuff!
I think Massive Killing Capacity and Swansong are good gateway albums for Death Metal. Glad you enjoyed the series Robert. Cheers as always fella 👍
Great episode James! Carcass definitely went through the most obvious change from the 90's. Napalm Death sort of blur the line between grindcore and death metal IMO.
I 100% agree with both of the points you make here Tony. Cheers mate 👍
I would say Morgoth, Therion, and Darkthrone made the biggest transitions from Death Metal.
Another death’n roll album in the vein of Wolverine Blues might be Disgrace’s Vol.2, even recorded before Wolverine Blues came out, but could only be released years later. Hope you dig it. Cheers!
Completely unaware of the album you mentioned. I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation
I'll have to check out the Pestilence album, sounds like it might be similar to Nocturnus
I highly recommend giving it listen. Cheers for watching
World Demise from Obituary deserves to be on that list too, they definitely tried to mix it up on that album. I saw them play London when they toured on that album, with support from Eyehategod and Pitch Shifter (back when it was a two word band name).
Although a little different I don't think World Demise is that different to their earlier output, still a good album though. What a line up, that must have been an amazing gig. Thanks for watching and commenting
Gorefest, especially "False" is still one of my all time faves. Their "comeback" albums La Muerte and Rise To Ruin are also really good.
Haven't listen that much of Napalm Death since Utopia Banished, but I've listened all of their albums nonetheless.
Wolverine Blues is just a banger. Though my fave is Clandestine and this was a bit of a shocker when it came out, but yeah, really great album.
To me Pestilence haven't given really that much since Testimony Of The Ancients
Swansong was also another "what the....." album, but it kinda grew on me over the time. Necrotisicm... is "THE" Carcass album for me.
I'm fairly new to Gorefest but really enjoying them. Wolverine Blues is an absolute banger. Agreed on Necrotocism, definitely the best Carcass album. Cheers for watching and commenting
I knew Entombed and Carcass would get a mention. Interesting thing is I was watching Much Music back in 1991 and Entombed were on and they said "Thrash Metal is dead." As a thrash fan at the time I instantly thought "Wait, when did this happen?". This was the first I heard of it. They were right though. I love Entombed and Carcass. Interesting thing about Napalm Death is that Barney would get fed up with this direction and jump ship and do one album with Extreme Noize Terror, only to later return when they promised to go back to a more grindcore direction with Enemy of the Music Business. The bands I would add are Darkthrone, who famously abandoned the death metal style of their first album to the start of Black Metal on their second album. Morgoth completely abandoned Death Metal for their album Feel Sorry for the Fanatic, citing being exposed to new music and bands such as Ministry. Therion made the slow transition from Death Metal to pioneers of Symphonic Metal. I got into Therion with their symphonic stuff and went back and got their Death Metal albums.
I didn't.know that about Barney being unhappy about the change in direction. Entombed and Carcass have to be here, 2 bands that changed and got it right. Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. Cheers
Entombed did a cool cover of SODs March Of The SOD
I'll check that out. Nice one 👍
It appears on their double CD Sons of Satan, which is a compilation of all the cover songs they did @@mrboulder9714
I'm not big on the whole death and roll thing but the two examples i love is Wolverine Blues and Pungent Stench's Club Mondo Bizarre.
Not familiar with that Pungent Stench album. Thanks for watching
Really enjoyed this mini-series James. Subhuman Race is the only Skid Row record I have never heard, some
other good examples of bands doing the change-up as well.
Cheers Mate.
Glad you enjoyed it Keith. That Skid Row album is good, not as good as the first 2 but still worthy of checking out. Cheers mate
I feel that Carcass' "Swan Song" has aged extremely well, at the time it wasn't appreciated for what it was, but from a modern ear it's not too shoddy at all. I do admit to hating it on release (hell, I wasn't too keen on the change of direction on Heartwork as I got into Carcass with the 1st 2 albums) but it's really grown on me over the years,
Yeah Swansong is a good album and I've enjoyed it from the day of release. A couple of tracks are average but on the whole I really enjoy it. Cheers
Nice dollop of death there, Mr B! I say, those CD boxes are a drop of good. I have the Benediction box - can highly recommend that one, it bangs like a shithouse door - & the Behemoth one. Gawd, they were a bit ropey early on. They got better, mind.
Cheers Nigel. Yeah i have that Benediction box too, killer stuff. Shithouse door 😂😂😂😂
Another great video, really cool series! Enjoyed a lot, thank you! Saw Pestilence live back then, they were just awesome. Killer band. Also like Swansong a lot, really a great album. Perhaps missing here is Odium by MORGOTH from 1993 where they really changed their style (not as good as the classic stuff unfortunatly). Cheers from Switzerland
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the series. Never seen Pestilence live unfortunately. Swansong is a decent album no doubt about it. Thanks for watching and commenting
Nice stuff James. Swansong is ok, Diatribes is pretty good, Spheres - not a fan sorry, Wolverine Blues I agree is superb, just like their first 2 and some after this too.
Did you know The Hunt by Sepultura off Chaos AD is a New Model Army cover.
Wolverine Blues is so good. What an album! Yes I did know that was a New Model Army cover, decent version too. Cheers Paul
Skid row with subhuman race was the album that really got me into. Sep with Chaos ad really made them sound even better and they played at donington that year (94). Gorefest there first two for me. Dismember there first was there best. Entombed wolverine blues pretty good, but could of been better. But was nice that they kept with there guitar sound. Pestilence spheres not album that I was over keen on. They album before much better.
Subhuman Race and Chaos AD are definitely underrated 90's albums. Wolverine Blues is a beast, I absolutely love it. Cheers
Remember listening to Atheist - Elements and loving it, most of my friends didnt like it at first, another great album is Elements of Anger from Sadus, such a great album and got a lot of hate from the fans
I still need to check out Athiest. Nit familiar with that Sadus album you mentioned. Thanks for watching
I love this series and found it interesting to go oh yeah that album is a thing and would go back and love them all over again. Also thank you for reminding me to listen to more death metal bands
Cheers and glad you enjoyed the series fella
Thanks for reminding me about Spheres by Pestilence. I loved it when it first came out and listened to it all the time but I haven't listened to it for years. I'm definitely going to give it a long overdue listen now!
Spheres is definitely a killer album that flies under the radar and really deserves more love. Cheers fella 👍
@@mrboulder9714 absolutely! I'd forgotten how good it was and it was good to listen to it again. Next up, Testimony of the Ancients!
@@k1ngsol938 That's a flawless album 👌
Good to hear your thoughts James on there albums James. I only know the Entombed and Carcass albums. I'll check out the Pestilence, sounds interesting from what you've said about it. Yeah really enjoyed this series and it put some light on the change in metal as the 90s rolled on.
Pestilence one is definitely worth checking out mate. Cheers Grant
@@mrboulder9714 I gave it a listen after watching your video. A very good album. I'd say it's very similar to Voivod.
Hi James!!! Cool one and glad to see you added Skid Row and Sepultura, to me i think Chaos AD was a good record as i don't mind the groove sound they were adding, however "Roots" was a bit too much, imo..... As you might know i'm not big into extreme metal Death/black/grindcore...... i think i have only heard to Emtombed and it's a good listen. cheers and be well
Chaos AD is definitely proof that bands can change and get it right. Cheers Cristian
really interesting series this dude
Cheers man, glad you enjoyed it
Great stuff hitting 2000 subs❤James, well deserved mate!!
Love rhat Napalm Death era, deapite people moaning about experimentation.
Wolverine Blues is a decent record too, killer stuff.
Spheres get's a lot of shit, but I love when bands take a chance andcexperiment a bit.
However, carcass took a step too far with Swansong. I don't really bother with Heartwork either, gimme Symphonies any day.
Great video James, congrats again!!
That 90's era of Napalm is definitely cool. Wolverine Blues is an absolute banger mate. Thanks again mate, i really appreciate that
@@mrboulder9714 No worries James, great video and great idea for a series.
Excellent video here boulder mate! Can’t argue with any of these. Wolverine blues is an absolute monster. Entombed can do no wrong in my eyes. Favourite band and like yourself I remember buying that on cd from the big hmv on Oxford street good times. Also your spot on about the production on gorefest erase and cleansing! Great video mate!
Wolverine Blues is one of those albums I never tire of, heard it so many times.and it never gets old. Cheers Dylan my friend
I have Wolverine Blues and Massive Killing Capacity. I spin them off and on. I still prefer the first 2 albums for Entombed. I really want a copy of Left Hand Path. I do have Clandestine. Didn't GRAVE change their sound after their first 3 albums?
Yeah they did a bit. Part of the reason in that Jörgen (vocals/bass) left the band after the "Soulless" album
Wolverine Blues is my favourite Entombed. Only have the first Grave album so I need to dive into their discography some more. Cheers Rodney
Im an old fart so was around in the golden age of DM and when bands started to change to blend in with the current trend. -some worked, some didnt ! Love that Dismember album - never done a bad one. Napalm are my favourite band of all time, so love all of their stuff. Entombed I thought was a massive let down after the AMAZING Clandestine, but have grown to like it since. Pestilence I enjoyed for its weirdness, but again a let down after Testimony. Carcass are also one of my favourite bands but I fucking hated Swansong - pissed me off when that came out lol - even though I own it 3 times uurrghh
Death Metal was brand new ti me in 1993 so a lot of these were my first Death Metal albums. I can definitely understand them being disliked by fans of the first wave of Death Metal though as they are very different. Cheers
The only death metal i can tolerate is a couple of albums by death. Leprosy and human are very good.
Both excellent albums, I'd recommend giving the excellent Symbolic a try if you like Leprosy and Human. Cheers Marty
@@mrboulder9714 I will James thanks. Can't remember if I listened but I do remember listening to the red album and I didn't like his change of vocals and the more progressive music. I much prefer the old style they had.
Your welcome mate you put up decent content
Thanks, much appreciated
Not really into death metal, but I'd also add any Death album after Spiritual Healing. They went into more progressive direction, still amazing discography.
I did think of including Death's The Sound of Perseverance but decided it wasn't quite enough of a step away from what they had previously done. Cheers fella
Gene Hogan had stated that when they were making Symbolic that Chuck had become tired of Death Metal.
The big step came when Chuck kept the same line up, but added a new vocalist and changed the band name to Control Denied. @@mrboulder9714
No Black Metal or Atmospheric death Metal so many awesome bands
I don't listen to enough Black Metal to justify doing a video on the subject. Cheers
@@mrboulder9714 No worries
