Painting starter sets are often overlooked - but their simplicity and refined choice of palette and models choices are often perfectly engineered to offer the most reward for the inexperienced painter. In this video, we're gonna take a look and see what these Warhammer 40000 and Age of Sigmar painting sets can really do.

This tutorial is a really great example of why I keep my doors locked!
😮
Mood.
When he was talking about his brush, I just about lost it laughing.
I started with the Space marine box about 8 months ago, I then bought an Ork Combat patrol I was totally hooked. Still haven't played a game, but I am having just as much fun painting.
WAAAGHHHH!

Pure hobby zen time. Peak soundtrack, as per. Useful info, and as always not up self... A+
and then BOOM! "Uncircumcised brush" out of nowhere. I'm crying 🤣
hahaha, i forgot i said that off the cuff
the "baby shit brown" got me
I can think of a few channels that have covered starter set paints, but none of them would be brave enough to use the brush that came with them and try and emulate that beginner experience. Absolutely hats off to you, and huge bonus points for the quality of the video itself.
As for that skit with John, I feel as though I'm the John in most conversations so this feels like a completely normal interaction...
Hahaha, yeah that conversation was a little too real I realised, I’ll let John know he’s not alone.
Gunpla builder here that dabbles in minis for a change of pace…dude you THREW me when you whipped out the GodHand Ultimate Nippers. I’m over here expecting nail clippers or some kitchen drawer shit…..and then you start playing the Ace Attorney Jazz album?!
You too huh?
A 1 hour The Bill play through special where Tony cosplays as DC Tosh Lines プリーズ!
If you keep asking, you will get!
Best season 3 of Spaced ever.
The tyranid is fantastic. Really enjoyed this video
It really does feel like Spaced in a Hobby shop, which is a credit to the guys at MS_Paints.
@@luketfer I’m not lying, I’d pay good money for that show.
John is like Nick Frost's character from Spaced. Love it.
AHH I remember the starter sets that didn't include the basic colours you needed to paint your models 😂
Love the video Dave
Godhand are unforgivably expensive, but I'm never looking back. I have a habit of, if I end up with a gift voucher from work or a present, using it on a hobby tool that I like the looks of but would never be so extravagant as to buy with cash. Last Christmas went on a pair of Godhand clippers, and just wow.... I'd recommend not using them on transparent sprues, as they're reportedly fragile, but they're an absolute dream to use.
14:00 "my taste in Ultramarines is distinctly 90s, so I grew up on pastel blue looking toy soldiers..." I first got into the hobby in the late 90s and I got one of those mail order starter sets you cut out of White Dwarf and posted to them with a cheque. I had no idea ultramarine was a shade of blue, so I ended up with a chapter of Enchanted Blue Marines
The lore of the Hectorverse has me fully enraptured. I feel like brad pitt in 7... "Whats in the box?!"
Loved the jazz. Nice.
Your hands are pretty steady. The old shot of whiskey trick works. Not good in the long run but fine work i do say.
Aye mate it does work. Normally only do that in the evenings at home. Don’t wanna be shottin whaskey at work haha
Spend 10 minutes browsing for new paints and all of a sudden it's raining paint videos, cracking job. And now I've just learnt about skeleton rats.. I can't believe you've done this
hey man, just want to say thanks for the vids, been a rough time lately and these really help, thank you
This video is making me want to get my nephew some Warhammers.... complete with GODHAND!!
Basic paints, advanced techniques. Gods I wish I could paint this well
I'm not gonna say if i can do it, you can do it too, because that's super patronising and lame to say, but it's a lower hurdle than people expect and they often cross it without realising after practice. A depressingly large amount of practice haha.
Such a great topic for a video! Boosting confidence for the people without hundreds more to spend on tools and paints. I learned a lot too - cheers!
Thanks fella, been stuck home all day with a cold and I needed some soothing wholesome vibes right now.
Aaaaaaay no problem, Wal!
First love the music choice.
Second i got started off a class and a army painter fanatic set at my local lgs and when i say that one afternoon has utterl launched me into hyperfixation is an understatement
Another bloody marvellous video with a pleasantly not at all offensive soundtrack, relaxing and informative simultaneously. Excellent stuff
Cheers mate!
Love the videos man, great to watch. Found u via your interview on painting phase. Big love.
Cheers mate`! Big love backatcha!
Bro am I getting called out?! My entire CSM army is painting via beginner paints and a few choice colors.
The whole bit about the Bill board game. I felt like I was watching an episode of SPACED. Bloody hilarious.
Great work dude, when I watch you I don’t feel I’m watching TH-cam but more of documentary/comedy with all the effort you go into editing etc. epic as ever!! Have you got any plans to do some old world content??
Thanks mate! Currently not, no. I’m probably going to cover Kings of War instead, since I already have it, and it’s something I’m more behind from a cost and accessibility standpoint 🐸😊
Love the creativity in your videos.
this video was perfect for me - i've got the starter set and paints/tools set. I got my first combat patrol (Leagues of Votann) and wanted to figure out a colour scheme using the basic stuff
That Tyranid is stunning mate!
Funny, I loved the Nid and the Eternal. You showed what can be done with a starter set.
Just bought the introductory set to mess about with and having tons of fun with it.
Enjoy mate! That starter brush could use a little stray hair trim after some use, but it's pretty solid!
love the sound track on this one!
Jazzzzzzz... Nice!
They look really good considering the color options. After the fantasy RPG painting kit from Reaper, I happily got started with the hobby with the Getting Started with Warhammer magazines & the bigger GW paint kits (without the minis). I always thought between the 9th ed 40k set & the Age of Sigmar set that the Age of Sigmar paint selection was the better option, plus many of the better sculpts with a lot more character were in the AoS line.
Tony may act goofy at times, but he surely has technical knowledge of the hobby!
Tony's Techernickle knowledge of most things is always surprising.
@@MSPaints He's just handicapping his own power for the sake of everyone else.
looks insane!
I know it’s not the subject of the video, but on the subject of edge highlighting… try edge highlighting with oils, it’s so much easier and user friendly because mistakes can be easily fixed
Thank you for the tip! I’ll give it a go
I look forward to every new vid because it’s less of a show and more of a meditative experience.
Top stuff Dave, really love your comedy bits too man 😂
I saw Skeleton Warriors in that Thanks to my Patrons bit. Nice. I gotta say, the skits are usually a highlight in your vids. Not something other mini related channels can boast.
I'll let John Chumpchange know he's welcomed back!
I think I need a review of the bill board game in my life 😅
I don't think I want to admit how up for that I am....
Your wet palette is driving me crazy Dave! Bruh, I can’t tell if it’s soaked or dryer than a popcorn fart… or that it’s somehow both lol. 😂
It’s soaked and dry, haha. Warping paper drives me nuts!
Yep! I started the WH hobby with the 9th ed Necron and Space Marine paint sets and 1 Recruit ed starter set. That $100 spend, became one of the most impactful purchases Iv ever made in life truthfully. Been enjoying the hobby for 4 years, now on my 2nd ed of 40k, about to be on my 1st ed of AoS. Id argue now though, the new 40k intro set is the way to go because you at least get playable units, on top of the paints and tools. Its a much needed upgrade from the 9th ed recruit box which was still good in its own right. I imagine 4th ed AoS launch boxes will be structured the same way as 40k 10th ed boxes were
This channel is like a mini-painting Spaced! Amazing!
Champion vid again bloke. Very enjoyable cheers 😃👍
First time viewer, just liked and subscribed, I really enjoy your unique presentation, the subtle humour is a refreshing difference to typical painting videos
I like to buy starter sets, especially if they come with a few sample minis. That way I can try to get a feel for a particular faction or model-line, without spending too much money initially. If I like the sample mini enough, then I can spend more money on the same stuff. Ditto with new paints and washes, like with Agrax Earthshade, that I had heard so much about before getting my own pot through a starter set.
got to say the Tyranid turned out fantastic. I still remember the old Citadel Starter Paint Set in the red box with the little milk bottle lids on the paint. ( still have some of them actually) and when I got back into the hobby I got a Vallejo and an Army Painter starter set and each of those had a lot better range of colours for mixing up other stuff that might have been missing. These being themed to particular armies/units means that's obviously not their concern, but definitely not the worst initial purchase someone could make if they're getting into the hobby.
Top video as always man 👊
Cheers, Slimetiiiiiiiime!
For the weird orc guy, after applying the wash, just use the base colours for a slight hilight.
Aye bud! I managed that with the skin, and it looks passable i'd say!
Cool as always. 👍
For your Ork type character, and without knowing what paints were available, maybe you could have darkened the green as the base coat, used the unblemished green and then highlighted a little.
Yeah I probably should have gone darker by mixing it with the agrax or something!
Came for the Thumbnail, thought while watching since when did the young Anders Fridén paint minis and subbed cuz i also have the shaky Hand disease.
Lets dive into the backlog i guess
Make sure to come up for air! There's some weird crap back there!
@@MSPaints as i am currently working as a nurse i am used to weird crap but thanks for the heads up! Really enjoyable Content while painting!
That tyranid looking at good as it does with just the starter paint set makes me think they should do a Seraphon version
Cool tutorial 😊😊😊
Great video
Cheers mate!
Godhand for Warhammer models is the sort of crazy overkill I love.
Pure overkill, hahaha
Who is this "theme of laura" cover artist? Those starter sets are very nice, at least for AoS, good value per paint, also pretty cheap way to boost army little bit if you have AoS Warrior Starter for example. Not everyone is die hard hobbyist and for someone who want to enjoy 15 vs 20 model battles with "toy soldiers" who he painted himself. I started AoS with Warrior + Dominion starters, then bought both AoS starter paints set + bigger set of paints (10, set with clipers and mold remover) and painted everything with my sons with them. Then we learned rules, played few times, put minis on shels and went back to WFB 6th and 7th editions ;) glad you liked those starters!
It's from an unreleased Silent Hill 2 expanded soundtrack, mate. Available on youtube!
@@MSPaintsthank you!
I picked up a set of those army painter drybrushes, and honestly, they were surprisingly good value brushes. Really solid quality drybrushes for a cheap penny. Not as cheap as a dollarstore makeup brush, but close.
Gotta love that Boyes!
I liked the transition from painting tutorial to ...to a mid 2000's spaced episode. Shame Simon pegg couldn't cameo 😂
Think John needs his own model, a being confined purely to Liminal spaces influencing people in our world to play The Bill board game is truly the most Eldritch creature I’ve ever heard of
Aye, you should see him with the lights off.
Another stonking episode. Your writing and editing is getting better. Keep doing your thing. p.s. Are ever going to get a payoff on the chest?
Payoff? Chest? I dunno why everyone is so obsessed with this crappy old chest. I think i might just get rid of it.
I need the Bill right now!! 😂😂
As always 10/10 🎉
This was actually really convenient to see! I recently got into Warhammer, but didn’t exactly want to spend money on paints. I have a basic understanding that you took a break off Warhammer, but is there anything else you’d consider getting?
Have contrast paints improved on the prototype paints of nighthaunt gloom etc?
Certainly have! I'm in the camp that speedpaint 2.0 is generally better, but there's some contrast paint that hits different for sure
Any recommendations for a mirror gold paint or Technic to achieve a mirrored gold finish?
Haven't found one i like yet. Anything that like to me normally never looks right, but then i should probably try it more in moderation.
As a nice touch you are using a wet pallet, something I didn’t learn about until I had almost stopped painting myself, a little bit of grumpy realism for you to ignore should you wish 😊
Yeah they’re a game changer when you get around to using them!
@@MSPaints I have been impressed with your work for quite awhile now, I stopped painting myself because my eyes gave up on me so now I’m relying on commission painters to do the work for me, but I am disinclined to let my MS beat me fully regardless of how permanent progressive it is.
I am thinking of trying my luck with Fantasy Battle or the new name for the same game because I like the idea of square bases and Orcs 🧌
Have you tried wrapping a big old elastic band round your hand and brush when doing fine details? Just do it in a way that puts a tiny bit of resistance on your movements with the brush? I know it sounds weird, but apparently the added tension works wonders for intention tremors. It was a miracle for me, but I have been told it doesn't work for everyone. Also feels weird as fuck at first.
Just made a fresh cuppa and boom TH-cam notification new video from dave... its as if it was foretold 🤘
you know, I am only now realising that for all your motor control issues, ive never seen you make a single mistake on camera! thats skill! Also did you sneak skeleton warriors into the background there?!
Editing skill for sure, haha.
I really appreciated the music in this video! Especially when I had heard the music at 5:35 and thought about Edgeworth from the Phoenix Wright games presenting an updated autopsy report. Could I ask what pieces you used for this video?
NOTE: after reaching the end, I noticed the Fragrance of Dark Coffee. Nice!
It's all from that Phoenix Wright jazz akbum mate! cant remember the actual name of it
Ah, all I needed to know! Great thanks.
Is the song at the start is theme of laura from silent hill 2 or am i just going crazy ?
Great video btw!
From the SH2 expanded collection! Available on youtube! :)
Today I learned the channel is not named after Microsoft Paint. I am very smart
Or Mobile Suit! Haha
Can it be done !!!! Nurgle Bless 🙌
Shmickel Dorsel fin. Rights!
Aye ya some Kevin Costner.
I've got to ask - what music did you use for this episode? The one playing at the space marine segment is positively ethereal.
Just want to see if I'm correct in guessing the music is from the Live Jazz band versions of the Ace Attorney soundtrack? (I'm only 7 minutes in, so apologies if this is covered in a moment haha)
Hahah yes! Fragrance of dark coffee for the outro/reveal! Fantastic taste Mr. Paints!
Such a great content creator that you summon the elusive Elstonation from slumber?! What power do you yield, you fiend ?!
Awesome vid as always that skit had me pissing my sides bravo
Trying to guess if that skit was based on Spaced or something from The Bill.
Neither! He just happens to look like Mike from spaced in hindsight!
spoiler: Daves way, way older than he looks and he did the music for the bill :D
I wish! That OG theme song is a baffling work of musical engineering, haha. (Not sarcasm btw)
how many times has that spru cutter been folded?
one million troooooops
Can't believe you've gone back to GW painting after all the singular dog kicking they've done (allegedly). Still a nice level of positivity not a bad little show all around.
It didn’t take long to give up on that starter brush
Used 'em til the end. But i can't overbrush and drybrush with it. Well i could. But i dont believe in assassinating my own time.
Love all your videos man , Cheers . Just wondered if u had looked into ketogenic and carnivore diets? Though not mainstream, Ive heard of a lot of positive results for many conditions like ms. Ive personally experienced huge improvements for asthma and depresssion on these diets. Anyway , keep up the great worK :)
Aye mate, i did Keto a long time ago when i was working out n that. Was good, felt good, just kinda one of those things that's hard to sustain with my workload and all that. Always reaching for the carbs and caffeine.
Very watchable as always, but do prefer the non-gw stuff. I get this pays more bills but please don’t leave the esoteric behind
you had me at shiting dog
"available in most hobby shops" not a single shop in my state has it
Sorry mate, I’m usually quite thorough in my research, but I didn’t get to fly over to America to double check.
@@MSPaints next time be sure to drive through every state and double check 🤣🤣, big ups Dave you're an inspiration
Heeeeeey, I’m doing that right now and filming it for my not yet released channel, starting from scratch, having *never* painted mini’s before, hahahaha, at least my miniatures will probably look like a noob painted them ;)
I «tried» making a «wash» from the black color, thinning it out to shade parts of the Space Marines … results where *not great* to say the least, will try mixing black and blue for my next attempt - also I’m doing it «stage by stage», painting the first one exactly as described in the booklet, on the next one trying dark panel lining, on the next one doing edge highlighting in addition to the previous steps and on the last one trying to shade/highlight/drybrush for a more «3d»-effect … This is a great video though, should be a *must watch* for everyone thinking about getting started :)
Have you been watching BLOT outdoors? Lol
Thats what ive been using amd its pretty hard. The brush sucks hard
