    The most important thing to remember for beginners is to never compare your work with the box art! They are professionals that have painted for years and do it everyday as a job, there is no way your models will look like that when you start painting. Focus on choosing fun color choices and experimenting with painting techniques as you get more comfortable! Don’t feel ashamed to try something new or a color scheme that is not official! Have fun and be proud of your work! There is nothing more fulfilling then having your own work on display on a shelf or table!

    • @MidwinterMinis
      @MidwinterMinis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +256

      Absolutely, I say something to that effect at the end of the video. The most important thing is that YOU are happy with it, and that YOU enjoy it! :)

      @@MidwinterMinis it’s so important! So many beginners get discouraged because their miniatures don’t look perfect. But honestly it’s what I love about this community, that everybody has a different style. And honestly I prefer an objectively less well done painted miniature over a grey plastic mini in a game of warhammer any day!

    Damn finally somebody who actually tells the basics and not some frickin high class art lesson.
    I appreciate this video a lot. Pretty much every tutorial I have seen up to now was way to advanced for an absolute beginner.
    "Go ahead with the airbrush" as if I have an airbrush just sitting around! Or "Use some wash" without explaining how or even what that is. And ofcourse working with 7 different pots of paint for a simple marine.
    This video just made my day. It gave me some real motivation to go and paint some models while giving me some more realistic outlook on what I can expect.

      Look within yourself before blaming a tutorial offering advanced skills. Beginner techniques are just novice method of applying the same skills. This tutorial is junk and will barely improve your painting ability.

    • @JBasilix
      @JBasilix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @@robsonez Dude I literally looked up beginner tutorials... Not advanced. If something is labeled beginner I expect it to be appropriate for beginners.
      Yes now almost a year and a lot of minis later this video has little to offer. But back then before painting my very first mini without knowing any basics it helped a lot! The title of this video includes "your first". This is not about improvement, it is about the very first step... the basics of basics. And it does that very well.
      Also what the fuck is this: "Beginner techniques are just novice method"? xD. Beginner and novice is pretty much the same... maybe the novice has painted 10 minis while the beginner is literally just beginning. Ofcourse they are the same techniques.
      Seriously don´t even answer... I can see you have nothing to offer in terms of arguementation and I will simply ignore it.

Written instructions with four accompanying images, one of which being "After basecoat, base colours and blacklines - now paint the rest of the miniature." really sucked. The information in the 90s was so bad, despite practically living in the local store for a year or so I didn't once hear anyone mention that you needed to dilute paints. I was so annoyed no one covered this and only found out when a friend casually mentioned it years later.
      It's great people have all the resources you mention these days as it makes things far more accessible, which is likely to keep people enjoying the hobby longer.

You see, I've been wanting so bad for about 15 years to get into the hobby. Like many, I was terrified of painting. I'm no artist. Never built a model kit. I was terrified of it, and thought I would never be apart of the 40k tabletop community. Then I found this video one day after watching "play on tabletop". You made me believe that I could paint. You made it look simple. So I took the plunge. Again thank you. I've painted so much in 1 year and 9 months. I have tyranids, ultramarines, sisters, necrons, and my wife is now painting an orc army. I fell into a deep state of "painting fatigue" after my lattest project (knees deep in an AoS Nighthaunt army) and half-way through it just left me. First time in three years I got exhausted by the simple thought of picking up a brush. However, this video, for some reason, ignited my creativity. Just watching those steps again, the whole painting process explained, the "bread and butter of the hobby" one might call it, it made me fall back in love with painting itself. I put my army on hold, went to my nearest gaming store, got a set of boardgame minis (just a bunch of archers and hellbardiers), and I just love painting them, designing their bases and picking some easy colors schemes.
    I guess sometimes we can really get lost in big projects, watching amazing minis people post online and pushing ourselves more and more, instead of just grabbing a few colors or minis we find cool in the moment and paint away.
    Thanks a lot for bringing the joy of painting back to me with this video!

      You are not alone. I started when I was 13 and now I'm 40 but I still have problems with some things. I've been a tattoo artist for 20+ years and have loads of knowledge when it comes to painting and mixing colors etc... but even I have trouble. I still learn new stuff all the time. It's definitely an individual learning process and I highly suggest picking one video you like the look of and just follow it. Also pick what you want to paint, learn it, and shut TH-cam off and paint them. You will find a 1,000 different videos telling you how to do the same thing 1,000 different ways. Best of luck to you!

So after watching this video I feel motivated to try out assembling and painting my own first models. You explaining the process so well is really motivating, even for someone who did really badly in his art classes ^^ Thank you for this cool video, I will definitely return and look over your tips once more :)

You gave me the confidence that I can do it, even though the last time I've touched a brush and paint was 20 years ago in high school. I've ordered everything you have on your ''beginner's'' list, the brushes and the vallejo paint kit, i also got a wash from citadel and some primers from home depot (the only thing i'm not so sure about). I'm sure my Skitarii rangers will look derpy as hell but hey we all start somewhere.

    More Advice:
    1)You can make a wet pallet for pretty much free with stuff you have around the house and theyll probably be better then the brand ones (search youtube and the first video that pops up should suffice) it takes 30seconds to make.
    2) Plastic glue should be used in a vantilated areas, the fumes of the chemicals melting the plastic can be very harmfull or even in a place with a window if you do a lot of minis at a time or regularly, some people have felt headaches and got health problems, (not just the plastic glue but, spray primers and such materials , do be carefull)
    3) The light is also important, like Guy said , not just to see what you are doing but also to take care of your eyes, youll be able to paint better and longer . Try to aim for a 5500 to 6000k led bulb (K is for kelvin and it should say that in the packaging) , lasts longer, similates day light better, and costs less in energy bills.

    Hi!
    I have found a really handy tip for painting robes of the kind of your skitarii instead of sub-assembling them is to blue-tack the miniature to the base. To access any tricky bits, just remove it and then stick it back. This might not work well with applying sand/texture paint before priming though, but I usually use GW's cityfight bases or basing paints, so I always apply them after painting.
    Anyway, your videos are very good, keep it up!

The nearly impenetrable lore has made it very intimidating to get into, but with how welcoming the community is, I feel comfortable looking up videos & learning about it, & hopefully collecting, building & painting my own figures.
