Many years ago when I lived in Edinburgh, I ordered sausage and onion with chinese gravy and it was delicious. Obviously, not your usual chinese takeaway but I thought I would give it a go. Never have I seen this anywhere else but curious to ask if anyone has ever come across this and if you guys have ever made this? Here's hoping because I love in Wales now and I don't think they'll deliver. Cheers and love this channel.
You need to do another book, with restaurant quality now to compliment your takeaway recipe book. I absolutely love your book and I hear you saying there is a takeaway way and a restaurant quality way. I’d absolutely love if you done both id definitely purchase it
Wow that is fantastic to see how the gravy is made without coming out of a tub. Interesting to about it being good with cheese, a bit like the poutine the Canadians are famous for. Going to give it a go, many thanks!
You know what we're all thinking now, don't you? Show us the easy version, too! I had to explain to two men what gravy browning was the other day, and they must have been about 50. Whaaat! I said I used to keep a bottle of gravy browning in the car and they thought "Gravy browning" was a process, so I'd have gravy in the car and it would go brown. Middle aged men today - they know nothing! Thanks for showing this, as soon as people learn how easy it is to make gravy it might stop them putting Bisto on their sunday dinner. That's worth a medal from the queen by itself!
Middle aged men today know nothing? No, THOSE middle aged men didn't know what gravy browning was. That's it. Not any deeper than that. Maybe they never really cooked. Some people don't. A sweeping statement like "middle aged men today know nothing" probably says more about you than them.
love you both your amazing so lovely thank you for recipes your a lifesaver as my wee one autistic and only likes chinese gravy so your saving us a fortune x
I wonder....When I make Cajun food, I make a brown roux add the vegetables, etc. etc. etc. I wonder if I infuse the oil with the vegetables, then make the roux, would it turn out the same way?
My childhood favourite chips and gravy. People tried putting me of it years ago by telling me there chicken blood in It I didn't care it tastes so good.
Thats amazing. Didn't realise it was that easy to make. Oh yh, u most likely have tried it but I have discovered a product by Lee kum kee that I use with my own kimbap and its a sweet soy sauce and it says drizzle or dip!! And you can get it as a hot chilli version 2. I just wanted to put it out there 4 all of us cuz its amazing to dress rice or anything lol xxx

My local Chinese used to do an English dish where you got roast chicken with a gravy containing fried onions, mushrooms and peas. To this day, we've never been able to get the same flavour. Could a gravy similar to this have been made?
Into the saved list to try sometime. 20-25 years ago My local takeaway used to do chips n gravy (was proper chippy chips as they took over an existing chip shop) the gravy was amazing! I think it was pretty much the bbq sauce used in the spare ribs. It was thick congealed goop but never tasted anything anywhere near as good. They now have a place a couple of villages away and the bbq sauce is luminous orange and nowhere near as good 😢 on the plus side, it's now a rubbish chip shop which is a good thing as it saves me money and belt notches because I don't use it 🤣🤣
I've never had Chinese gravy, so I'll have to try this. My friend is gluten intolerant, would this work with another type of starch or is gluten integral to the thickness? When you say heat the oil at medium low, what temperature would that be? Thanks.
Coeliac here. You’d need to use GF flour and GF soya sauce. Both of which taste similar to the real thing. Might need to add a wee bit of xanthum gum to replicate the glue in gluten
Off topic, when i get a singapore chow mein the pork has a pink coating on it that tastes fantastic, tasted the same on either chicken or pork 20 years ago but never found out what it is
Hi love your videos I have made made the Gravy, it’s a very good recipe but I find it is lacking in flavour and not that rich in flavour what would you recommend to help it ? :)
Looks great, but far too much effort for my lazy backside. Are there any brands to buy in you would recommend (or, just as importantly, recommend I avoid?)

Normally that means you didn’t cook your veg long enough or didn’t use enough salt and MSG, as this is the recipe we sell on the webstore and we often have people say there to much flavour for them

When I was at school in my teens, we used to use our dinner money to buy chips, peas and gravy from the local Chinese chippy. Delicious! Never tasted any as good since. This was in the early 70s in the north west, not far from Liverpool.

Hey guys love the videos. Is there a video of you’re gravy you mentioned at the end of the video.
No haven’t done that yet
It seems to be a northern Ireland thing as every Chinese there does the gravy but in the rest of the UK it's quite rare
Actually depends where your from, in northern England it’s very popular like this, south not at all
I live in a gas free village also. When my old cooker (ceramic hob) gives up, would you recommend getting an induction?
Yes we wouldn’t use them if there was a better alternative :)
Would love to know how to make chicken in a garlic butter sauce I get it from my local it's great

Look lovely but Can this solidify if left to long?
Yeah it will go solid, but like the curry paste you just scoop it
Wonder if you could do it in a slow cooker
When you say this isn't how you guys do it (and that your way is easier and nicer), what is your method?
Curious now ha, cheers
We will get to that :)
Can you help got a satay powder do you uses it the same as the curry one thanks guys x
No it’s more of a rub for skewers
When you say most buy in gravy . Which do they buy . Is their a Chinese style gravel granules,?
There are 100s of wholesale brands so it’s impossible to say

2 beef stock cubes, 1/2 liter of water and 1 table spoon of corn flour, makes a nice gravy.

Is this and your way in your cook book? Great content again both
No there is no gravy in the cook book as it’s very very regional for example where we are no takeaway does it at all
Is this the same as what some takeaways call Chinese bbq sauce or is that something else?
No that’s completely different, bbq sauce is a by product of making char Siu or ribs

I found the browning in Asda
So it's basically just a veg gravy? Is there any version where a beef or chicken flavouring is added?
Veg gravy made with spiced oil...
You could add a Oxo cube or some chicken or beef stock
No because then vegetarians can’t have it and that’s a huge market to cut out
