OK, played two basic games over lunch with this video in background. it really helped us pick it up quickly (with the help of the puase and rewind buttons)! Can't wait to try with more characters

A player get's one reroll opportunity (unless power specifies otherwise). I have ordered a base set for AvX and Uncanny X-men. Looking even more forward to them arriving after seeing this video that really does a great job of explaining the mechanics, especially when watching this and the play-throughs.

I played for years MtG, but this feels different.The collectible nature of the game took me back 25 years when I was purchasing with friends packs with some random rubber miniatures of warriors who had animal characteristics. I don't even remember how they were called, but I do remember the excitement I felt when I was about to open a pack to get something unexpected. Having some friends play the game so you can trade duplicates is a must for this type of game though.

The first time I tried to watch this I still found it confusing but after looking through the rules briefly and THEN coming to watch this video, it makes perfect sense. I like the narrator, he comes across friendly and helpful. I did chuckle a few times when I picked up on a Canadian accent during the times he said "Out." :) Great video and editing work on this - close-ups happened when I wanted them to happen and so forth. The only improvement I'd suggest are to have a screen in-between segments that very briefly shows a written checklist of various rules (turn structure for example) to help further clarify the phases and stuff. I like having a mix between the person doing the video and seeing the actual rules up on the screen. Just a suggestion. :)

i dig rolling dice and i dont hate the Marvel/Xmen world, tried getting into warmachine to be more social but thats just a money sink. ill probably buy the starter of this and see if i enjoy playing.
It's a fun and inexpensive game, Dice Masters is. For 15 bucks, you get a full starter set with cards that aren't that crappy. And for .99, you get 2 dice and 2 cards to match. It's a damn decent value honestly, and for just 10 bucks in boosters, you can get a decent team going, which is awesome. To make it better, character dice don't seem to change. For example, the Captain America and Iron Man dice from the AVX set have the same faces (just different plastic color), meaning they are compatible with the new Cap and Iron Man cards from the Uncanny X-Men set. Pretty sexy!

+Damien Swanepoel Not at all. They can be helpful when you're first playing, but they aren't necessary, so long as both players clearly know what each pile of dice you create represents. There are also free versions of the playmats that you can download for normal sized paper if you google.

It's like a dice version of MTG but Marvel instead of magical beings. My wife and I (total Marvel fans) are so going to love playing this. Hopefully the kids will too. LOL.

Ok im sorry im still learning this and haven't gotten my rules down yet. id like to know the rules before i start playing but one think i haven't figured out yet is the burst. How do you use it and how do you level up your characters that you pay for like Spiderman or whoever or does it just depend on what dice you buy. +James Dills Some cards, in their abilities, have a burst symbol and text that explains the burst effect. If you roll a burst on your die, than you can use that burst effect. Likewise, there are effects on some cards that let you level up your characters.
When you spend dice to purchase other dice, or for other reasons, those dice are supposed to be out of play (off the play mat) and not to the used pile according to the rules. I understand that this is because there are cards that affect dice in the used pile. You might want to add a comment to that affect for this video.
Hey Donald, do you have a page for this from the rule book that I could go check. I followed the rules in manual, and worked with WizKids on this, but perhaps they updated something?
Rodney, pages 5 & 6 (and others), in the Age of Ultron rule book describe the Out of Play area. I don't know when this was added to Dice Master rules, but that's where I saw the reference.

I've being wondering, tough.... once you start getting the expansions, boosters and the mat, where do you store them? Do you have any suggestion about this? Box, bags, or maybe there is something specific to store all the dices and cards of this game out there.
Hey Rodney! Love your videos and this game but I did have a few questions about it. First, if you roll a question mark on a sidekick die, does that mean it could be a pawn too or just any type of energy? And second, if you and the other player chose the same super hero but different variants, how do you split up the dice you have of that character? (especially because I just have the starter box and haven't gotten any boosters yet.) Should you play with less heroes each player can have? I'm not sure, I was hoping I could get some help. Question marks are energy types only. If you both choose the same character and are playing from a single set, then you would need to agree on how to split up the dice. Might be best to use different characters, get a second starter set. Hope that helps!
Quick question, are the action cards playable by both players? I watched your other videos where you play with your co-host and was wondering that. Thanks for your videos by the way! Got me really wanting to play the game :D
The "Basic" action cards are playable by anyone, whether you brought them to the table, or your opponent did. However, regular action cards (like Captain America's Shield) are part of a players team and are not shared. Hope that helps.
At the end of your turn you put all the side lock and character dice back in to the bag. The character dice are they now used as energy and can’t be used attack or defend no more because they were ko’d? Also how do you decide on the stats of the characters? Do you roll for the stats or just decide which one you want? If so wouldn’t everyone just go for the highest attack and defence stats?

Question for you. On the force beam action card. if you roll a burst that say to do 2 damage to each character but there are no characters currently fielded does the damage go to your life points instead?
No plans to currently, my schedule was already booked up pretty solid when it landed, and I may wait to see if there are future clarifications to the rules system before I attempt to pull an instructional video together for it.
This might be a stupid question but a wonder if i can freely mix characters between Marvel Dice Masters Uncanny ,Avengers vs. X-Men and age of ultron and so on, was planning on buying it this weekend !
Thomas Öhman You certainly can, though some sets may have extra keyword rules that don't always perfectly cross over, but I think you'll find it works pretty good.

So at 11:48 you state, "During the attack step the active player can continue playing action dice they have in their reserve pile." I thought basic actions were taken during the main step not the attack step.
So I have the Xmen starter pack. What cards would I use to substitute the ones you used to explain the rules? Like Human Torch, Spider man, Beast and Captain America.
It may seem that way, but in practice it hasn't seemed that way. The person going first tends to reveal their strategy first as well (buying first), allowing their opponent to react. Also, attacking right away is generally not advised, as it's good to keep blockers in the field.
Wow the price is surprisingly reasonable for what you get o.o. Hmmmm doesn't seem to be my thing though due to the collectible nature of it(I like living card game models like Netrunner more). I would probably enjoy marvel legendary more than this(on my wish list thanks to your videos XD). Regardless thanks for the video :).
great videos. i have one question. lokis scepter-magic states "place this dice into your feild zone. you may remove it to your used pile to deal 3 damage to a charecter die that was fielded this turn whenever you may use a global ability. send this die to the used pile at the end of your oppoments turn". when do i move it into the field? can it be an energy? thanks in advance
I much, much prefer 'dice-building' games to their card-based cousins. Dominion was just okay and I really dislike Thunderstone. Something about filling dice bags and having random draws that makes Quarriors fun. I am tired of comic book tie-ins for hobby games, but I must say this one looks good; particularly if they include more independent characters such as Daredevil, Moon Knight and Punisher. (Imagine their dice!)

I could see how including "boss" characters with extraordinary powers could take the game into a co-op realm. can you put two of the same dice on the field? like, if you had 2 spiderman dice, could you put them both on the attack feild at once? also is there a limit to how many dice are allowed on the attack field?
I have another question me and my friend have been arguing about this, so when a character attacks a blocker does the blocker do damage to the attacking characters defense? Im pretty sure you showed that on your video but maybe im wrong. My friend says no because hes blocking but from what i saw in your videos the blocker does do damage to the attacker equal to its attack value
The blocker also does their damage back to the attacker. One reason they use the terms "attacker" and "blocker" is because certain effects will target one or the other, but in terms of resolving combat, when two characters meet on the field of battle, they each do their attack damage to each other.
Beast and CA attack with 5 and Human Torch block with 4 so... does the human torch player drop down 1 life point? (the difference between 4 and 5) or does your life total only go down when an attack is unblocked? THANKS
Damage dealt to a character in excess of that character’s defense is wasted. Attacking characters that were unblocked (or characters with certain special abilities) deal damage to the defending player. Deduct that damage from the player’s life.
Both contain all the sidekicks, Basic Action cards and other stuff two people need to play. The main difference is that a campaign box has 16 or more characters, each in multiple versions, whereas a starter has just 8 characters, with three versions each. So the campaign box gives a much more varied and interesting team building experience for 2 players (two-player with just a starter and nothing else is enough to give you a flavour, but is really intended to be supplemented with boosters or other products).
can you mix sets on your own team, such as darkseid and slifer the sky dragon v.s deadpool and deathstroke? ( im sorry i've just picked up this game and have absolutely no battle experience yet)
I am just wondering ... since there are so many custom dice with different symbols of different sizes, is the die still a fair die (each side have 1/6 chance of showing up)? I suspect the designer could not be detail enough to scale each picture, words crave, paint, material density to create a die with equal weight on all sides. So we will have to play the game with unknown probability distribution of each side of the die. Suppose someone run a test and obtain the exact probability of each side showing up, would be a unfair advantage. What do you think?
***** ***** Even with casino dice it is still pretty much impossible to get a perfect distribution of odds. But without deliberate tampering it's hard to adjust the odds by more than 1:10^3. Leaving the odds largely 1:5.
Yeah, and really the best way to keep dice odds 'fair' too is adding sharp corners to prevent too much spinning and get them to land flat after a couple tumbles. These don't have that. But from my experience thus far, I've not really had any dice that act 'weighted' and favor any one side.
I bought the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles version of this and the instruction manual is a nightmare. If I hadn't found this video, I would be selling the game.

hi we just got this game in at our local store and was wondering if its possible to play with more then 2 players? or some sort of 2 aside game? we tested doing 3 heros,1 action and 9 dice and it seamed to work ok aslong as no team had more then one type of each hero
Right. Only at the moment you need to draw an additional die out of the bag, and there are none there, do you put the used pile back into it, and then continue drawing. So if I need to draw 5, and there are 3 dice in there. I draw the 3 that are in there, then put my used pile in the bag, shake it up and draw my remaining 2.
Oh no. Why? WHY? My wallet is crying so loud. I want this game so badly...This is my two weaknesses combined. Love for Quarriors, and love foe Marvel heroes.
I have a question. the spiderman card I'm using "webslinger" states that when spiderman assigns to attack, you may lay a fist to force every opposing character to block him if able. does that mean if you pay the fist that the person your playing against HAS to block him with everything and does spiderman deal his damage to all blockers??
+James Dills Yes, the opponent would have to block him. Spider-man would assign damage to those blockers the same way you would assign damage anytime you have multiple blockers. Hope that helps.
Constantine antihero card states while he is active once per turn you may make your opponent reroll an action die. If you have say 2 out can you do that twice?
+James Dills Not familiar with that card. However, my ability to help is limited to the rules of the game for the most part. When it comes to specific card effects that's something WizKids or the community would be better able to address.
Alot of the characters from the xmen uncanny set have this ability(Heroic: When fielded, Angel may pair up with a different Heroic character until the start of your next turn) so i was wondering since they are paired up do they combine their attack power or do you treat them as separate characters still

WHY???!?! WHY??!??! why u do this to me rodney?? LOL... im a marvel fan and i like dice.. gonna end up buying this one..lol PS. u mind explaining the exapnsion pack a bit more? It has 2 cards each with ONE die matching that card. Wouldnt that means that u ll end up with a character in ur team that ONLY has 1 die, where it seems that the minimun u play in the beginner is 2 per character
You can have a single die, and be able to use the card in your team (you don't need at least two - the starter set just happens to give you two each). Of course, having more of the dice will allow you to put more of them on your team (and therefore, more to add to your dice bag).
aaawwww... :( is only a 2 player game.. i was hoping it was more like quarriors (specially after ready is from the same creators).. guess it make sence considering how quarriors was kind of broken with 3 players and unbalance with 4 players :(.. awesome clip as always though XD
They are a material called Tyvek, which is more durable and resists tearing (unlike paper). I'm sure gamers will bring their own dice bags to the table as they play more.
Zero interest in this. It looks bulky, and needlessly symbol/reference heavy. It looks like a bad combo of Legendary and Dragon Dice. Good video though, informative.
It's actually the exact opposite - a great combo between the license, a deck-builder and a brawling dice game. Furthermore, the use of iconography is very sparse and well adapted to the needs of the gameplay, so your assessment in that regard is fairly incorrect as well.
Anthony DuLac Watching the rest of the video, it also seems very strange that unblocked heroes do damage to life totals...what does that even mean in a game that is supposed to be heroes vs heroes? In M:TG for example it makes sense as your creatures are your minions, but in this Spiderman fights no one and does damage to ...? Thematically this game seems way off as well.
I just got the game with the post today and bower i can tell you i watched the how to play video and i haven't refereed once to the rule book the whole day playing it. its very straight forward since you have all the cards with all the information you need on the table. i found my self only looking at a card if i had to check the level of my charter "to see if it was affected by and action. all ready game session in place after work tomorrow Marvel dice marathon :)

We got that set too and see it also has equipment cards and not sure how that differs from the Marvel sets in terms of how you play.

+Damien Swanepoel Not at all. They can be helpful when you're first playing, but they aren't necessary, so long as both players clearly know what each pile of dice you create represents. There are also free versions of the playmats that you can download for normal sized paper if you google.

It's like a dice version of MTG but Marvel instead of magical beings. My wife and I (total Marvel fans) are so going to love playing this. Hopefully the kids will too. LOL.

Ok im sorry im still learning this and haven't gotten my rules down yet. id like to know the rules before i start playing but one think i haven't figured out yet is the burst. How do you use it and how do you level up your characters that you pay for like Spiderman or whoever or does it just depend on what dice you buy. " I understand that you can spin them up/down already also."
+James Dills Some cards, in their abilities, have a burst symbol and text that explains the burst effect. If you roll a burst on your die, than you can use that burst effect. Likewise, there are effects on some cards that let you level up your characters.

When you spend dice to purchase other dice, or for other reasons, those dice are supposed to be out of play (off the play mat) and not to the used pile according to the rules. I understand that this is because there are cards that affect dice in the used pile. You might want to add a comment to that affect for this video.
Hey Donald, do you have a page for this from the rule book that I could go check. I followed the rules in manual, and worked with WizKids on this, but perhaps they updated something?
Rodney, pages 5 & 6 (and others), in the Age of Ultron rule book describe the Out of Play area. I don't know when this was added to Dice Master rules, but that's where I saw the reference.
Ah, understood. I was working from the original rules at the time, so something might have changed there.

Great video Rodney! I've bought a copy of marvel dice masters for myself after watching your videos! I've being wondering, tough.... once you start getting the expansions, boosters and the mat, where do you store them? Do you have any suggestion about this? Box, bags, or maybe there is something specific to store all the dices and cards of this game out there.

Hey Rodney! Love your videos and this game but I did have a few questions about it. First, if you roll a question mark on a sidekick die, does that mean it could be a pawn too or just any type of energy? And second, if you and the other player chose the same super hero but different variants, how do you split up the dice you have of that character? (especially because I just have the starter box and haven't gotten any boosters yet.) Should you play with less heroes each player can have? I'm not sure, I was hoping I could get some help. Thanks for making some awesome videos!
Question marks are energy types only.
If you both choose the same character and are playing from a single set, then you would need to agree on how to split up the dice. Might be best to use different characters, get a second starter set.

Quick question, are the action cards playable by both players? I watched your other videos where you play with your co-host and was wondering that. Thanks for your videos by the way! Got me really wanting to play the game :D
The "Basic" action cards are playable by anyone, whether you brought them to the table, or your opponent did. However, regular action cards (like Captain America's Shield) are part of a players team and are not shared. Hope that helps.
At the end of your turn you put all the side lock and character dice back in to the bag. The character dice are they now used as energy and can’t be used attack or defend no more because they were ko’d?
Also how do you decide on the stats of the characters? Do you roll for the stats or just decide which one you want? If so wouldn’t everyone just go for the highest attack and defence stats?

Question for you. On the force beam action card. if you roll a burst that say to do 2 damage to each character but there are no characters currently fielded does the damage go to your life points instead?
It only affect characters, so the players are safe :)
So do you think you'll be doing a playthrough of Myth? Personally, i think a lot of people are going to need the help with that one.
No plans to currently, my schedule was already booked up pretty solid when it landed, and I may wait to see if there are future clarifications to the rules system before I attempt to pull an instructional video together for it.

Thomas Öhman You certainly can, though some sets may have extra keyword rules that don't always perfectly cross over, but I think you'll find it works pretty good.

As many as you end up buying. No limits.
So at 11:48 you state, "During the attack step the active player can continue playing action dice they have in their reserve pile."
I thought basic actions were taken during the main step not the attack step.
You can play Basic Actions all throughout your turn (but must discard them at the end of your turn if unused).
So I have the Xmen starter pack. What cards would I use to substitute the ones you used to explain the rules? Like Human Torch, Spider man, Beast and Captain America.
I don't have that expansion, so I'm not sure.

It may seem that way, but in practice it hasn't seemed that way. The person going first tends to reveal their strategy first as well (buying first), allowing their opponent to react.
Also, attacking right away is generally not advised, as it's good to keep blockers in the field.
Wow the price is surprisingly reasonable for what you get o.o. Hmmmm doesn't seem to be my thing though due to the collectible nature of it(I like living card game models like Netrunner more). I would probably enjoy marvel legendary more than this(on my wish list thanks to your videos XD). Regardless thanks for the video :).

lokis scepter-magic states "place this dice into your feild zone. you may remove it to your used pile to deal 3 damage to a charecter die that was fielded this turn whenever you may use a global ability. send this die to the used pile at the end of your oppoments turn".
when do i move it into the field? can it be an energy?

That booster pack looks like it holds cards only. Where are the dice stored?

I much, much prefer 'dice-building' games to their card-based cousins. Dominion was just okay and I really dislike Thunderstone. Something about filling dice bags and having random draws that makes Quarriors fun. I am tired of comic book tie-ins for hobby games, but I must say this one looks good; particularly if they include more independent characters such as Daredevil, Moon Knight and Punisher. (Imagine their dice!)

I wonder if in future releases, there'll be double-sized dice for characters like Galactus. I could see how including "boss" characters with extraordinary powers could take the game into a co-op realm. I've never played Legendary and have heard good things about it, but I think I'd much rather use dice than cards.
The starter set brings the same characters? Wolverine can be found only in the booster?
All the Starter sets are the same and yes, Wolverine is only in the boosters.

can you put two of the same dice on the field? like, if you had 2 spiderman dice, could you put them both on the attack feild at once? also is there a limit to how many dice are allowed on the attack field?
You can put multiple copies out at once and there is no limit to the number of dice in the field.

I have another question me and my friend have been arguing about this, so when a character attacks a blocker does the blocker do damage to the attacking characters defense? Im pretty sure you showed that on your video but maybe im wrong. My friend says no because hes blocking but from what i saw in your videos the blocker does do damage to the attacker equal to its attack value
The blocker also does their damage back to the attacker. One reason they use the terms "attacker" and "blocker" is because certain effects will target one or the other, but in terms of resolving combat, when two characters meet on the field of battle, they each do their attack damage to each other.

Beast and CA attack with 5 and Human Torch block with 4 so... does the human torch player drop down 1 life point? (the difference between 4 and 5) or does your life total only go down when an attack is unblocked? THANKS
Damage dealt to a character in excess of that character’s defense is wasted. Attacking characters that were unblocked (or characters with certain special abilities) deal damage to the defending player. Deduct that damage from the player’s life.

Both contain all the sidekicks, Basic Action cards and other stuff two people need to play. The main difference is that a campaign box has 16 or more characters, each in multiple versions, whereas a starter has just 8 characters, with three versions each. So the campaign box gives a much more varied and interesting team building experience for 2 players (two-player with just a starter and nothing else is enough to give you a flavour, but is really intended to be supplemented with boosters or other products).

I am just wondering ... since there are so many custom dice with different symbols of different sizes, is the die still a fair die (each side have 1/6 chance of showing up)? I suspect the designer could not be detail enough to scale each picture, words crave, paint, material density to create a die with equal weight on all sides. So we will have to play the game with unknown probability distribution of each side of the die. Suppose someone run a test and obtain the exact probability of each side showing up, would be a unfair advantage. What do you think?
It is rare that dice (except maybe casino dice) are manufactured to be perfectly balanced on all sides.

Even with casino dice it is still pretty much impossible to get a perfect distribution of odds. But without deliberate tampering it's hard to adjust the odds by more than 1:10^3. Leaving the odds largely 1:5.
Yeah, and really the best way to keep dice odds 'fair' too is adding sharp corners to prevent too much spinning and get them to land flat after a couple tumbles. These don't have that. But from my experience thus far, I've not really had any dice that act 'weighted' and favor any one side.
Paper bags? They will last a whole two seconds. Luckily the Quarriors bags are high quality.

hi we just got this game in at our local store and was wondering if its possible to play with more then 2 players? or some sort of 2 aside game? we tested doing 3 heros,1 action and 9 dice and it seamed to work ok aslong as no team had more then one type of each hero
There is no official way right now, but people are certainly experimenting with ways.

I'm a little vague on clearing the used pile. Do you only clear it when the dice bag is empty?
Right. Only at the moment you need to draw an additional die out of the bag, and there are none there, do you put the used pile back into it, and then continue drawing. So if I need to draw 5, and there are 3 dice in there. I draw the 3 that are in there, then put my used pile in the bag, shake it up and draw my remaining 2.

I have a question. the spiderman card I'm using "webslinger" states that when spiderman assigns to attack, you may lay a fist to force every opposing character to block him if able. does that mean if you pay the fist that the person your playing against HAS to block him with everything and does spiderman deal his damage to all blockers??
+James Dills Yes, the opponent would have to block him. Spider-man would assign damage to those blockers the same way you would assign damage anytime you have multiple blockers. Hope that helps.

Constantine antihero card states while he is active once per turn you may make your opponent reroll an action die. If you have say 2 out can you do that twice?

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you have a specific example of a cad you're confused by?
Alot of the characters from the xmen uncanny set have this ability(Heroic: When fielded, Angel may pair up with a different Heroic character until the start of your next turn) so i was wondering since they are paired up do they combine their attack power or do you treat them as separate characters still

Wouldnt that means that u ll end up with a character in ur team that ONLY has 1 die, where it seems that the minimun u play in the beginner is 2 per character
You can have a single die, and be able to use the card in your team (you don't need at least two - the starter set just happens to give you two each). Of course, having more of the dice will allow you to put more of them on your team (and therefore, more to add to your dice bag).

What's up with the paper bags?
They are a material called Tyvek, which is more durable and resists tearing (unlike paper). I'm sure gamers will bring their own dice bags to the table as they play more.

Zero interest in this. It looks bulky, and needlessly symbol/reference heavy. It looks like a bad combo of Legendary and Dragon Dice. Good video though, informative.

It's actually the exact opposite - a great combo between the license, a deck-builder and a brawling dice game. Furthermore, the use of iconography is very sparse and well adapted to the needs of the gameplay, so your assessment in that regard is fairly incorrect as well.

Watching the rest of the video, it also seems very strange that unblocked heroes do damage to life totals...what does that even mean in a game that is supposed to be heroes vs heroes? In M:TG for example it makes sense as your creatures are your minions, but in this Spiderman fights no one and does damage to ...? Thematically this game seems way off as well.
Bower Power No worries gents - the game doesn't have to work for everyone. Complexity and thematic integrity is often in the eye of the beholder.
I just got the game with the post today and bower i can tell you i watched the how to play video and i haven't refereed once to the rule book the whole day playing it. its very straight forward since you have all the cards with all the information you need on the table. i found my self only looking at a card if i had to check the level of my charter "to see if it was affected by and action. all ready game session in place after work tomorrow Marvel dice marathon :)
