    I am rather excited by this set even though I don't play D&D, but how any anyone resist Dragons!
    Damned "traffic" jam & the LA/LBC port workers....I WANT MY GAME!

    This just knocks it out of the park. The design is phenomenal.
    The look of the cards is objectively better than the superhero version, but I think the clean lines and so forth better match the comic theme of the other sets. I mean, this DOES look great, and hopefully WizKids brings the superhero versions up to this level after the ones that are in production (DC and Age of Ultron) are out. We'll be covering a lot of this at TheReservePool and should have some reviews and unboxings coming prior to street date for this and DC.

    Another suggestion on the subject of drafting; a method I've tried successfully, using a starter set, is randomising which player gets which dice (just take one of each die and deal at random), which determines the teams, then the players choose which card of that type that they want.

    I have to say, this looks significantly better than the Marvel Version.

      You aren't wrong. I've thoroughly loved the Marvel version. Thoroughly. I'll buy into it hard every time.
      But this knocks it out of the park. It makes the Marvel version look like amateur hour.

      I certainly like the idea of this game..its just...as many have said before..would prefer this as an LCG style rather than a CCG style game. They would make an effort to balance out the powers of characters even more because rarity wouldn't be a thing any more.

    • @trevorwilliamson186
      @trevorwilliamson186 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Riley Crowder Rarity doesn't really mean better abilities in this game, though, it just means different options. Some SRs are really powerful, others are even less useful than their common forms. Just depends on the cards. The CCG aspect really is just to keep the game profitable.

    Got mine on pre-order, with the Minsc and Boo card and also 12 foil packs, i will probably get more extra foils as i am a DnD fan. However i agree that 20 extra packs is enough for casual play. That is the amount i plan to add to my yu-gi-oh and x-men sets. Can't wait to get this.

    So in order to be competitive, you've basically got to buy an entire gravity feed? That sort of sucks... what do you then do with your "leftover" duplicate cards?

    • @trevorwilliamson186
      @trevorwilliamson186 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need to buy an entire gravity feed to be competitive. I've seen dozens of games where not a single rare or super rare card was used, and many of those games won out against super rares and rares.
      Leftover duplicate cards are still useful, considering that every card also comes with a die that can be used to build up a stronger "deck." If you have a character you know you'll purchase more often for your team, having 4 dice is certainly better than having only 1 or 2 dice. You probably won't need 4 red dragons, but having 2 clerics or 4 orcs with swarm might not be a bad idea. Any duplicate card means another die to add to a potential team.
      The game is really quite awesome, and unless you're obsessed with collecting everything, you can do just fine without having to drop too much money.

    This is incredible. I'm soooooo upset that it isn't already in my hands. It deeply hurts, and sadly, my FLGS won't let me pay for my preorder for fear of being shorted merchandise. UUGGGGGHHHHH PORT STRIIIIIIIKKKKKEEEEEEE!!!!

    So this is allot like Magic but with the added dice mechanic, or am I misunderstanding? I love dice and Magic, so this would be a big hit in our house.
    Also I see some comments about this being better than the Marvel version. Is the Marvel version similar? If it is I'll pick up the marvel version now while waiting for this to release. Wow, so many games...so little time.

    • @marcoschaub8978
      @marcoschaub8978 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are all almost identical. However, I'd advise to try before you buy. I'm a veteran Magic player and I love dice also, but Dice Masters didn't click for me. Mainly because the combat is just weird. If your guy fights and lives, he stays. If he fights and dies, you get to roll him again on your next turn. If, however, he isn't blocked and damages your opponent, he goes to the discard. Deckbuilding also didn't feel very satisfactory. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, but I felt like I was oversold on this.

    • @JayChampagne
      @JayChampagne 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marco Schaub Think of the combat in this way: Your dudes have a job to do (get in there for damage). If they do that job successfully, they've earned a rest. If they don't succeed in their job, they'll keep trying until they do. If they get knocked down, they'll try to get back in the fight, and if they can't, they'll do whatever they can to help you.

    • @marcoschaub8978
      @marcoschaub8978 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Champagne I understand that. But I just get this feeling like it's a bit pasted on. You could find similar thematic explanations for almost all of the nine different cases. It's just that because of that the combat didn't feel as exciting to me as the one in Magic. Of course, this is my personal preference and you won't see me handing out Magic rulebooks shouting "Repent, sinners! Thou shall not play Dice Masters! 'tis corrupted and flawed!" ;-)

      If you're not a fan of collectibility, then you should try Quarriors.

    • @leshrac369
      @leshrac369 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MamboPython The thing is this has things mechanically and design wise aren't in quarriors that wouldn't really work with the quarriors dice because they aren't quite built the same. You could jury rig a mod to quarriors to make it work, but it'd be messy.

    • @skevoid

    They should do Dice masters based off of the Cthulhu Mythos!!! :3
    I mean, they might as well go down the list since this essentially IS a collectible game! And I have enjoyed the different themed DM so far...

    • @JayChampagne
      @JayChampagne 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They might as well, since Lovecraft is public domain. Still, they'll probably play some more with the licenses they paid for, first. Do not be surprised if Star Trek, Mage Knight, and Valve themed Dice Masters start popping up. Smurfs and Christmas Story set seem . . . less likely, but are still possible. And then, of course, they can do multiple expansions for each license.

    • @jexman100
      @jexman100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is necessary because it provides the basic action dice as well as the starting dice, and many characters. The starter packs are the best value for money in terms of dice and characters provided, anyway. And it's not as if they have been weakened to be put in a starter.. there are several viable characters in them.

  • @D6Damager
    @D6Damager 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tom mentions the compatibility between sets frequently, but what about the power level of the D&D set vs. The Marvel & Yu-Gi_Oh sets? Is it the same or less since a lot of the abilites are alignment or vs. monster?

    • @DanteMustLearn
      @DanteMustLearn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      D6Damager some of the new mechanics in this set make compatibility with past sets hard like adventures , Xp and equipment but other then that it should work just fine.
      it seems the Wizkids want to keep D&D seprate from the Other sets but it you cna make it work then go ahead :)

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, my dice are stored in a DIY box, with a section dedicated to each set (though you can organise them as you prefer), and my cards are in a small tub, with a rubber band round each set (and each set arranged in alphabetical order for easy searching).

    Looks pretty sweet...I was hoping they'd have something more fantastical/midieval after seeing the review for Xmen/Avengers...I wanted to pull the trigger, but couldn't...I'm not a huge comic book guy...however, this looks right on target.
    My only concern: is the game somewhat (too) complicated/complex to learn...? I'm a former hardcore MTG player (too expensive to continue after MANY years), yet even from watching the videos it looks like there is a lot to take in...please someone tell me it's not that hard to pick up!!!

    • @jexman100
      @jexman100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is simpler to pick up than Magic, for sure. For one thing, you only ever have a possibility of 13 different types of dice on your turn, unlike Magic's cards, and even then probably not and most of the dice function similarly. Combat can be slightly tricky to figure out, but after that it is just buying dice and then the other rules are written on the cards as card effects.

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dead easy. I actually learned the rules by playing a few games against myself. ;)
      There are a lot of different rules, but the character-specific rules are right there on the cards in front of you, and the play mats give you a pretty easy-to-follow guide to help you remember the order of play etc., so you don't need a razor-sharp memory to play. :p

      +Carlos Barreto Not remotely as expensive (yet?), but yes.

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It has the potential to be, but that's entirely on your own head, really. You can get plenty of good games out of just the starter sets; boosters are very much optional, and it definitely doesn't hind on hunting down the super rare cards. Rarity's great from a collectible standpoint, but rare cards aren't inherently more useful than the common ones.

    The most annoying thing about these types of games is that you have multiple versions of the same characters but they all have the same art.
    With so much great artwork available within the D&D (or DC or Marvel, etc) universe, why WHY do they limit themselves like this?
    SUPER ANNOYING

  • @HarfangX
    @HarfangX 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    is there a 2v2 or 4-player variant for this?

    • @JayChampagne
      @JayChampagne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Playing with up to four people is possible, but it requires you to purchase both an AvX or Yugioh starter as well as a UXM starter. It is possible that the D&D set could be used as a substitute for the UXM starter. The reason is that you would need 8 different colored basic action dice. AvX and Yugioh come with Red/Yellow/Blue/Green dice. UXM (and possibly D&D) comes with Pink/Brown/Orange/Purple dice. I say it's possible, but I don't recommend it. This game can get extremely tactical and be a real brain-burner with just two players. Adding two more would roughly double the complexity of every turn.

      Thx for the reply.
      So... I tried Summoner Wars because my gaming group was under the impression that you could play 2v2 and ... well you can... but it's almost like playing to side by side games....
      Would this be the same case? Anyone tried it?I'm only asking because this game seems to get great reviews but we never play 1v1 games so getting this would not work...

    • @kkfulcrum
      @kkfulcrum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are official 2v2 rules from the designers which only require 4 basic action color as usual. Its pretty fun. Check the dice masters web site or board game geek for the rules.

    I have 3 questions.
    First of all, you can have only 20 dice? I thought it was to it's max only.
    Second, swarm ability. Can you explain it to me because I kinda don't understand that one still.
    And third, I personally like using the yugioh dice masters however some stuff say monsters and in this set they're called npcs. Can someone please help me out?
    I'm sorry I am VERY new to the game (like 2 weeks new) and I like it a lot.

    • @jexman100
      @jexman100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A "tournament" ready team build means that A) You are playing with 8 character cards, and not repeating the same character. B) You do not exceed the Max: die number on any card C) You only have 20 dice in TOTAL on ALL characters.
      Some wording on cards is changed per version. Yu-Gi-Oh's Monsters are akin to Marvel Heroes or DnD Creatures. This just keeps each theme making sense, but if you want to mix sets you just need some light intuition about how to translate.
      I can't answer the swarm issue. I've only played the first Marvel run.

    • @DanteMustLearn
      @DanteMustLearn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Earthbound524 1) Monster = Sidekick = NPC
      2) Character/Hero (Comics) = Monster (Yu-Gi-Oh!) = Creature (D&D)
      3) Villain (Marvel) = Villain (DC) [Despite having a different icon]
      4) Monsters for D&D purposes are different from Monsters for Yu-Gi-Oh! purposes. D&D Monsters are characters with the "Claw"Monster banner in the upper left corner.

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It'd be nice to have some extra cross-range clarification, though. For example, you can equate Villains in Marvel and DC with Evil-aligned creatures in D&D.
      Obviously any dragon-based rules in D&D could affect any monster with the "dragon" subtitle in Yu-Gi-Oh.
      I wonder if it'd be game-breaking at all to class all Yu-Gi-Oh monsters as actual monsters for the purposes of Experience?
