I got this for Christmas in 2001 along with a PS2. I was so blown away by how incredible it looked compared to Madden 2000 on Playstation. It wasn't like now when the graphics and frame rate improve a little going from PS3 to PS4 or PS4 to PS5.... Going from Madden on Playstation to Madden on Playstation 2 was like entering a whole new universe. I probably played this game longer than any other Madden game.

People don't understand just how big of an evolutionary leap this game was on PS2 from the previous year on PS1. I was working a job where I had 4 days off in a row, just working the entire weekend basically, and my roommates had bought this, so while they were at work Mon-Thurs, I just played this thing all day long.. I got so good, I'd beat them 49-0 routinely, because they still hadn't caught on to this amazing concept of setting your feet before throwing, or not sprinting into a tackle, causing a much larger fumble chance, etc. The visual difference probably doesn't do it justice, but I remember being amazed at the difference between the two games just one year apart.
2001 was a terrible year since it was the last year of the dreamcast 🤣 but I do remember my cousin getting a PS2 around the summer of that year and we played tf out of this and at the time nothing was like it except NFL 2K1 but the presentation and graphics were way better at the time.

Madden has always been about features and bullshit over gameplay and presentation. Gameplay was pretty good in those days and it’s pretty good now. It’s football but my god. The presentation really needs an overhaul. 2K5 had it all! Madden 08 had the perfect blend of gameplay and features and presentation. Still no halftime, but at least it played well. The best Madden of the 2000s.

I remember the first time I saw Madden 2001, was in a very forward looking IT network admin class run by the local school system for gifted students, teacher declared and followed through on letting everyone bring in video and computer games on valentines day (we had full admin on our workstations because the class required it). Probably the highest-end realtime-rendered anything I'd seen up to that point (and I was fully absorbed by the likes of Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament in those days). I didn't then nor do I now care a single bit about following football, but I spent the better part of a 90-minute early class block eyes glued to the other guys and gals playing this on the classroom's projector. Awesome times!

This game was amazing. I had it back when it came out and I went from Dreamcast NFL2k’s to this, and never looked back. It just felt right, and no bs commercials and filler, this was just get in, pick a play, and PLAY. I can’t stand new maddens with all the pop ups and bullshit, it’s like playing a commercial!

The change in graphics definitely is crazy. However, I think the graphics on Madden 2001 on PS1 are certainly impressive in their own right.

Madden 64 was amazing for the time of football games. In 1997 that game looked so realistic.
Now imagine how us Dreamcast people felt. We had this sort of thing in 1999 lol. In 2000, we were playing NFL football online. It was insane.
