Yes, it was lovely not to see young people of non-British nationality waving their national flags. The Proms are a British event and as nice as some foreign people are they should not seek reflective glory from our celebration. In some cases these countries were enemies of Britain a short while ago and some still are particularly in the Republic of Ireland. Let us see not only the Union flag but also those of the other countries of our United Kingdom and of our Queen's Realms across the seas.
I always thought Land of Hope and Glory should be our anthem. Nothing against the Queen. Love it and always cry as l have lived abroad for 40 yrs but have always been very patriotic.
When the time comes for the Queen to leave us, it would be a good time to replace our dreary God save the Queen with Land of Hope and Glory. Unfortunately , if that happened, the lyrics would no doubt be replaced with new words that are sickeningly politically correct!!

We are fast approaching 2024 and many changes have occurred in both our countries since this event took place and I doubt that this event today would ring with such unabashed pride and patriotism. It may be a dirge but I cannot see what you mean when you say "God save the Queen" is german. The first man to publish it, Henry Carey in 1744 (roughly the same times "Rule Britannia" was written), was English; there is a French claim without evidence that they wrote it in the 1680s and there is a counterclaim that it dates from the early 1600s amongst the works of the English composer, John Bull. Beethoven quoted it much, much later in his "Wellington's Victory" (to represent the British victory over the French), was commissioned to write a set of keyboard variations on the tune in the early 19th century and numerous European states later adopted this anthem including the German Empire, Switzerland and Liechtenstein but its origin is definitely not german, so far as anyone knows.

No one seems to remember why Sarah Walker was dressed as she was (or they're deliberately not mentioning it).
This was 1989, the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Sarah was dressed in long, thick stripes of red, white and blue - a representation of the French tricolor! Only at the very end of "Rule, Britannia!" does her dress miraculously transform into the flag of the UK.

Thank God for TH-cam. I don’t know what this is all about, but it was exciting. I enjoyed the enthusiasm and patriotism of the Brits. We are fast approaching 2024 and many changes have occurred in both our countries since this event took place and I doubt that this event today would ring with such unabashed pride and patriotism. It’s not fashionable anymore.

I will, I hope you will too. The Monarch represents us all, no longer rules over us. She/He protects us from politicians, a role reversal to be sure but would you like Tony Blair or Corbyn or Grove to be our overlord? God forbid. Let's be carefull of what we wish for!!

It may be a dirge but I cannot see what you mean when you say "God save the Queen" is german. The first man to publish it, Henry Carey in 1744 (roughly the same times "Rule Britannia" was written), was English; there is a French claim without evidence that they wrote it in the 1680s and there is a counterclaim that it dates from the early 1600s amongst the works of the English composer, John Bull. Beethoven quoted it much, much later in his "Wellington's Victory" (to represent the British victory over the French), was commissioned to write a set of keyboard variations on the tune in the early 19th century and numerous European states later adopted this anthem including the German Empire, Switzerland and Liechtenstein but its origin is definitely not german, so far as anyone knows.
