The conductor was John Pritchard. He was conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He wasn't very well (as you can see he was conducting seated for most of the concert), and died just three months later. Britannia was Sarah Walker. The presenter was the much loved Richard Baker. I don't think he looks a bit like Roger Moore, but we always thought him very lucky for getting paid to go to concerts. The programme is the traditional one in a slightly different order. I like the way it is much more staid and stately than some of the modern ones, especially Pomp & Circumstance number 1 and Rule Britannia. Like so many things nowadays, the Last Night has become a parody of itself, so it was very nice to see this recording, before this happened, as late as 1989 too. I think the white suits are wonderful.
@@colintraveller The BBC was over populating the hall with flags. I managed to get them reduced for 1990 - having displaced on on air in 1989. They were actually dangerously heavy poles held up by just one zip tie.
