Totally understand and totally agree. The cinema was such a wonderful palace in which we were transported to all corners of the world. And musicals were a huge part of my family's world. The comfort, the spectacle and the music would be so hard to find again today.

I was born and raised in a once small paradise island of Jolo, Sulu, Philippines. I was Blessed to be a student of Notre Dame of Jolo Girl’s High school department. The Jesuit Marist bothers and Dominican sisters introduced us to Broadway musicals, and I could remember performances by combined students of Notre Dame of Jolo College, high school and elementary departments, held in a moderate size auditorium in our school, this happened during the 1960’s, and I could remember that they played “Oklahoma”, “Annie get your gun” which my elder sister was one of the performer, “South Pacific”, The King and I”, and “ The Sound of Music.
I would like to Thank you for uploading this video, this is the Best Theater Broadway musical I’ve ever seen, composed by the genius and God Given talent of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The Amazing conductor with all members of the symphony orchestra, as well as all the fabulous singers with their beautiful voices were all magical to me. I wish that there will be new generations, more like those of Rodgers and Hammerstein. God Bless.

When I was a kid, we had 5 LPs at home, 3 of which were Rodgers & Hammerstein: Oklahoma, South Pacific and The King and I. I played them over and over and still know each song by heart over 60 years later. As an adult I've grown to appreciate many of these tracks as among the finest songs ever written, I absolutely love them. When my mum was still alive we used to belt out Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' together. When I sing it now, it's difficult to hold back the tears. If there's one thing we need to thank the USA for, it's the music it has given the world. All of the genres of western popular music came out of its different geographical regions and multifarious ethnic groups. Musical theatre and films is my favourite genre.

When the show, "Oklahoma" opened on Broadway and the songs got on the radio, the whole country was enthralled. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing someone singing or whistling the songs. Our teachers at school had us singing them every day, especially, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!" We might have thought they were a part of Americana that had always been with us. At this time in our history, they were just what we needed to see the bright side of life during the times of war and recovery. It won't be forgotten as long as we're alive.

As a little boy growing up in NYC, in the 60’s, I was lucky to have parents who were friends with Richard Rogers. On a few Christmas eves I sat at the foot of Mr. Rodgers as he played Christmas songs as only he could. I knew I was in the presence of a great man. Indelible in my memory, this music cuts right to my heart. These days it’s wonderful to cry. In joy.

Many thanks Jim, for sharing that wonderful story. What a great privelege to have been so close to one of the two---GREATEST, popular music writer's of all time.
It has been my belief for the last, nigh-on 60 years, that when R&H died, so did musical theater, with about three excellent exceptions. THEE most important content of their music, was the shere musicality of their songs, and great, often witty, narration of the lyrics, which , was a strong accompaniment to the story lines. Virtually ALL of the songs, were eagerly awaited, by most of the big singing stars of the era, who were almost garanteed, a big hit after they had recorded them. Few people left the theatres without singing or humming those songs. Compare that with today. It is very rare, for a new ''Musical'', to have more than one big hit, maybe two, the rest ? immediately forgettable. Thanks to the great John Wilson, and his superb Orchestra, we can hear those enequalled songs, as they were intended, and LIVE TOO.

Mount Nebo, I love your comment that "our DNA is wired to enjoy these two brilliant souls." You nailed it. When I was a small child, I had no idea that two human beings created these melodies and lyrics. I thought they sprang up from Nature. Only Nature had the power to create such beauty and perfection that could impact our hearts and minds forever. Though in a way, Rodgers and Hammerstein are like Natural Wonders whose magnificence continue to inspire mere mortals.

Hammertstein wrote most of the lyrics and Rogers the music. A story I read, told of them working on "South Pacific". Rogers telephoned Hammerstein one morning and said he needed put a song in where Bloody Mary was trying to lure Lt. Cable over to an island off limits to servicemen.
It took Hammerstein about 20 minutes to drive to Rogers' home, and in that time he'd composed "Bali Ha'i "

Of course, the conductor, orchestra, musicians, soloists and choir are wonderfully excellent, the best of the best, and there have been many compliments to all these people, as there should be! Here, I would like to praise Oscar Hammerstein for his memorable lyrics and even more for the brilliant music of Richard Rodgers! How could Mr. Rodgers, along with Mr. Hammerstein’s lyrics, compose such stunning, emotional and technically perfect music and write so much of it during his lifetime! What an amazing talent that created some of the best music ever! A lot of people grew up with this music, as I did, and it has made such a difference in our lives. If you have problems in your life, which we all have, listening to or singing or playing the music of these great musicals, allows you to soar above your problems not just for a few minutes but for a very long time, as you continue to hear and feel the music inside your head! Bravo and Encore!

The Carousel Waltz Suite is my most favorite R&H instrumental piece. I’ve heard it so many times on CD’s and records, but never saw a close-up orchestra performance such as this one. The John Wilson Orchestra performs with so much joy and enthusiasm, that it’s not only music heaven to my ears, but an incredible sight to see the amazing talents of each musician, playing their individual instrument to perform this beautiful R&H masterpiece. I usually see other orchestra musicians appear very serious with their instrument playing, but this group exuberantly performs with much joy, smiles and true emotions which comes through in their music. What an incredible treat to see this Proms performance of R&H music! Thank you, thank for putting it on TH-cam! I love it so much! 💗🎵💚🎹💛🎭💜🎶🧡🎪💗🩰🎷🎡🎀👒🎶📯♥🎷🎺🥁🎵🎼🔔😊

@@evanwoodham6296 No, surprisingly, it was here in my small hometown of Bowling Green, KY. He had come along with Anna Maria Albergetti, to headline a show at our local theater. We (a group of us local citizens) bought a closed OLD movie theater to keep it from the wrecking ball, and had converted it to a live performance traditional theater. This was a fund raiser even and the night for the grand opening celebration. I say again, I was so surprised as to how nice they both were at just sitting at a table with lowly me and talking to me as if they were actually super happy to be with us for this event, and how easy it was to just sit and talk about a lot of things. One thing that impressed me just as much, was this lady who was with us. She was the piano accompanist for them and it took awhile but eventually found out I had heard her piano playing previously in a movie. She was the player for the famous music of "Dr. Zhivago".!!! I LOVED THAT piano music she provided and I actually targeted HER for more questions and answers than I did the two stars. She was one of those famous people we never get to know about, so I gave her my devotion that night. I wanted her to know how appreciative I was for her talents.
