It doesn't matter how many times it's explained to them, either, it doesn't compute, so the video's almost a waste of time. It's the same with 'toxins', people seem to believe what they want to believe. I almost get it, like it must feel good to believe something you buy will rid you of them

I was using 0.5% retinol for months and my skin did not stop flaking the whole time, now I know it was a reaction and not a purge, switched to 0.25% and now my skin is much healthier, no more flaking and the retinol is actually working much better! My skin is glowing now!

So true, it really is about balance! For my acne I have tretinoin, pushed it to every night because the doctor said I’d tolerate that after a while, but my skin stayed pretty irritated for months. Now I use it every other night or once every 3 nights, my acne is now actually doing way better with less tretinoin, more isn’t always more! 😄

I noticed with retinol that I only broke out where my skin was visibly congested before or tiny bumps were just on the verge of coming to a head, and no pimple stuck around for more than a few days. People say you’re “purging” if you’re breaking out on your typical areas, but even if I get a pimple on my cheek (where I usually break out) on an area that was totally flat and smooth before, I know it’s just a bad skin reaction. Really annoying that companies push the “purge” myth to get people to stick with a product for months that just isn’t working for them

I started using 0.04% tretinoin in October. I used it up until March, when I noticed my skin was only getting worse. I took a few weeks off before seeing a dermatologist. She prescribed a lower dose, 0.025%, in hopes that I’d have a better response. I’ve been breaking out ever since. Basically 7 months of horrible skin - the worst I’ve ever seen. So many people told me this was normal. I saw my derm yesterday and she agreed that tretinoin isn’t for me and my skin was actually having a reaction. Thanks for sharing this! People need to realize that these aren’t one-size-fits-all products.

I finally met someone who just totally has a similar experience to me. I also didn't find retinol suited my skin even in the lowest percentage. I suffered for almost 5months of breakout. When I went to the dermatologist in my area, she even said “how is it possible for somebody to not tolerate retinol at all?” 😅 I'm using only BHA to clear my pores and Vit C serum for antioxidants. Those two are likely passable enough for my skin to adapt. My skin now starting to get better with glowy finish 😊

It’s much better like probably 80% better with almost Clear skin 💕

Stretch marks happen when the skin is tested past it’s normal capacity and has to do with the amount of collagen and elastin you produce. It all comes down to skin type some people get them some people don’t but you can’t prevent them with products or make them non existent. Cellulite is caused by fat there isn’t anything you can actually do to your skin to get rid of cellulite you need to exercise to reduce the fat, but you might still have it where your body stores it’s fat regardless of being overweight or not.

If you sweat, or get dirt or grime on your skin, you definitely need to wash it off. That being said, Durant mean you have to use soap or some sort of detergent; using a washcloth is a good solution, as long as you don't scrub hard. Purge- Hydroxy Acid and Retinol build collagen and increase skin turnover. Average lasts 3 weeks
Skin reactions- Skin is sensitive and need the balance between efficacy and irritation. It doesn’t get better overtime.
Not every breakout is a purge!
To minimise irritation, start low and slow! (Lowest strength and 2-3 times a week) or buffer it with moisturiser

Thank you Dr. Idriss for giving us these facts!

I'd really like to hear more about that too. (Too many youtubers (not dermatologists) are advising people to use baking soda, apple cider vinegar and milk of magnesium, for example, all of which must play havoc with the acid mantle, especially if used regularly; some are even advocating using them daily.)

Ahhh!! Dr. Idriss I absolutely loveeee your videos, they're exactly what I need!!!
I do have a few suggestions for future videos, I thought I might leave them here 😊
    1. Moisturiser product for your lips that actually work ( not the flukes that cause more dry out)
    2. Hair products for strengthening hair follicles and helping with dry brittle hair.
    3. The debate about air drying hair versus applying heat after a shower ( I saw a few articles discussing how heat is a protector for the protein in the hair, unsure how accurate that is.)
    4. Laser hair removal do's and donts, I did many sessions for years and years, found benefits but at times, it stimulated my baby hair follicules and I started getting hair in areas I never used to get growth before ( my arms and shoulders started getting more hair then usual)
Thats all I have for now, thank you so so much for all your amazing content 😍

Great video, thank you! I was always terrified of starting a retinoid, but with my dermatologists advice I went straight from nothing to nightly 0.025% tretinoin (edited for accuracy, I realised it was 0 025%, not 0.05% that I said before!) and my skin care friends looked at me like I was crazy! From all the skincare articles I've seen online I would have thought this wasn't possible, but I experienced no such "purge" or any adjustment period (beyond some very mild pinkness for the first few days), and instantly better skin, my acne improved and is almost completely gone after just one month.
Keep up the great work, I love seeing more scientists and dermatologists put out information online alongside the huge amounts of misinformation that can easily spread : )

I really enjoy your channel, please consider making a video on how to reapply sunscreens throughout the day. I try to always wear sunscreen, but struggle with the reapplication process. Especially if I wear makeup, which I rearly do, but I do try to put on sunscreen on before leaving the house each morning.

  • @VictoriaLehr

THANK YOU for busting this myth!!! I have been thinking this for some time, there's no way your skin is "purging" when you try new products.
I tried 1 month of Curology, "a mix just made for me", and I aws having a bunch of tiny "water pimples" (that's the best way I can describe it), it wasn't normal zits, it was like very easily poppable and it was just WATERY. And I tried it for 1 month, so 1 week more than the 3 weeks for the purge time, and it was still happening. I was told "my skin was just purging" but I said nah that's BULLL because I've NEVER had weird tiny water pimples............
From then on, I could never believe shit about ppl saying "your skin is purging"

Thank you for being a smart person who dares to tell the truth !!!!Everyone looked stupid because I don’t believe in this cleansing thing !!It’s an irritation and intolerance, a lot of people use at least one active ingredient every day, they peel back daily and retinol together! ??Everyone is afraid they can prevent aging and death and at the age of twenty their daily beauty routine is like that of an elderly woman! ??but let me ask have you seen anyone who will stay forever 20 years ?? Noooooo Thank you Darling!!!KISSSS

I'm happy that in a year I learned do much about skincare, but mainly about my skin.
I can now see when my skin is reacting to a product or when normal, expected breakouts occur. Life saving nowadays!
Going to start Tret in a few months and getting my basics right is the best so far! All set for after the summer.
