Fun fact:The reason for the fact that the animators use the same color scheme for Polyphemus Circe and Poseidon is probably because of the album covers.
The way that Odysseus humanizes all of the foes that he's faced and dehumanizes himself in the same breath is crazy. Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but Monster starts with the exact same sound that Just A Man does. If you play them back to back you can hear it.
10:20 You're right! Most of the epic animators base the color scheme of the animatics off of the album covers Jorge published. Troy saga had a blue cover, Polyphemus saga had a dark red, ocean saga was blue, and circe saga was pink!
Yes! And the Underworld saga was gray, so people got creative. Especially since Monster is a callback to all of Act 1 I feel it's appropriate that most animators chose to animate it using all color schemes we've had until now. I also think Gigi specifically choosing to add their own color scheme that they used for their first two Epic animatics in the Troy saga (Orange and purple) was a nice touch, when I noticed I felt really nostalgic.
Just to break you heart even further, if you listen back to Polites’ song, you’ll hear the same melody that was song in monster. The lines of Polites “I can see you’re getting nervous, so do yourself a service and try to relax my friend”, “Think of all that we have been through, we’ll survive what we get into” shares the melody of “I’ll become the monster” etc. Also, in Open Arms, Odysseus sings the same melody “If we don’t get back safely, my men will turn this place into blazes”. This motif being in Monster shows both Odysseus is remembering and abandoning Polites’ “greet the world open arms” *and* references the first time he threatened to commit ‘monstrous’ actions in order to ‘get back safely.’
"Hades is not in the story", we'll in the original story Odyseus doesn't even get to see Poseidon face to face, this story takes it's own liberties in order to communicate what the author is wanting to tell in his story
I noticed in the animatic that when he says “if I got to drop another infant…” when he’s still a man he has the baby and when he lets go it’s the monster.
Casper the 4 note monster motif you noticed is also in Remember them. A choir sings it when Odysseus is singing the last part of the song with the lyrics :"Remember me, I'm the reigning king of Ithaca"
Also in "Remember Them" when Odysseus screams "Nooooooow" and the choir starts singing "Oh ohhh ohhh" the first three "Oh"'s are that motif, and it's repeated at the end of the song with choir singing the "Oh"'s in the background of Odysseus giving his ID the Polyphemus
Something i noticed in this animatic is that on the line, "Oh ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.", the first one, it seems like the shadow of Odysseus is the one singing it.
I don't know that I agree with that interpretation of the (possible) soldier backing chorus. While I do think it's either the men or the souls, if it *is* the men, the only word they're singing is "Monster." I don't think they're cheering him on. I think they come across more afraid.
whomstve THE FUCC is hyped for Act 2 I will be recording the entire Thunder Saga when it comes out which OFC means Patreon gets the full unedited version RIGHT AFTER I've recorded it. Join in on the fun! www.patreon.com/CFReacts
I love the detail in Gigis animatic at the infant line when the picture of Odysseus holding the Infant over the wall switches to the monster and the monsters hand being open. So Odysseus was holding on to the infant and the monster let go. The whole animation is incredible.
That animatic was amazing!! One of my favorite parts was during the line "And if I gotta drop another infant from a wall in an instant so we all don't die" On the word "die" when it changes to the monster shadow, his hand is open! Yes, in like a handshake sort of way, but also, it's open cause he DROPPED THE CHILD.
Interesting thing about the thunder saga (NOT A SPOILER) is that it contains two songs that NO ONE knows the names of or has heard any snippets of. Jorge hasn't released anything about them at all.
This animatic is the soul reason why Epic should be a TV show and not a stage musical. Cuz a stage musical just could not reach the visual heights that these do
Hello! Regular viewer and Epic fan here. I just wanted to point out a tiny detail in the animatic On 9:17 on the right corner of the screen, there is a pair of broken glasses. These glasses are Polite’s glasses. Have fun with that information :D Also, awesome reaction as always!
Mortius is so hilarious for using the April Fools Monster bit HAHA Also, the Monster and Athena connection is very valid. 13:23 Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and *battle strategy.* Odysseus was her *warrior* of the mind. He was built, by her, for war. I don’t remember exactly how Athena will take to this change in Odysseus exactly, if it’s too reckless in the other direction or precisely what she wanted from him, but it’s definitely a fair connection to interpret it as him internalising her advice and teachings and “going back” to her in a way. And yes, the backing vocals are the men. And I don’t really interpret them as agreeing with Odysseus per se in his strife to become the monster, but rather in the fact that he has “been a monster to ourselves”. Them just echoing “monster, monster”. They already see him as such. Perhaps that fuels Odysseus. He gets that confirmation that, yes, everyone else agrees that he’s a monster, so he must be the only one in the wrong. And he must right this wrong by being exactly that. By being a monster, this time to his enemies instead of his allies
I'm pretty sure that no longer you lyrics meant that odysseus in his current state in the way he is going will get him killed so he wont make it home alive the more ruthless and colder version of him will and the open arms side of him dies in this song so just a great day for odysseus
(No Spoilers Allowed Here) The helmets connection is just for the historical aspect of things. It's what the Greeks would have worn, which is why some artists use it for both Athena and Odysseus. I would love for that to be true though, and that it's a piece of Athena that Odysseus carries with him throughout, but I don't believe that is story accurate. Similarly, some artists depict him as having an owl pendant or bracers etc. I love when they do because even after their division, she has been with him and watching him throughout his journey whenever we hear her motif/piano.
It also brings to mind the Iliad scene of Hector’s helmet scaring Astyanax, since he doesn’t recognise his father in it. On one hand this is a great little scene on how war dehumanises you - Which applies to this whole musical and especially Gigi’s animatics… And also makes it way sadder knowing that here, the infant’s last sight was of something that he was known in the text to be frightened by.
@@amyhurst3629 For sure! I love that bit of attention to detail and lore. I just don't know if it qualifies as a spoiler for Mortius and Casper at this point. :L It's difficult to want to share lore things from before the Odyssey that apply to the Odyssey because I'm bad at knowing what they'd consider to be a spoiler or not.
I think Jorge wanted Hades to show up, I believe there is cut instrumental for his song. Also, when Odysseus is singing about Poliphemus you can see Polities' broken glasses in the right bottom corner
Spoilers here There was originally going to be a Hades verse in “God Games” but it was cut for what ever reason, Jay has shared the instrumental track, and it was really good (though when has Jay ever released bad music?) I kinda want to know what the planned lyrics were, though.
@@VictoriaStarratt Spoilers Maybe his grievances could be the fact he keeps getting his men killed or he disrespected his realm by barging in so Athena has to convince him that he tried his best with his men or like appeal to his general softer side which is seen in myths where people beg for their loved ones to return
Can't wait to see Casper's head explode at this one! The song is amazing and the animatic makes it *even better* and I couldn't imagine experiencing both for the first time at the same time!
17:00- We see Penelope take off Odysseus's headband and thats when he goes full dark. That was Polities's headband and when she took it off that was symbolizing the end of Odysseus doing the "Open Arms" mentality. My god Gigi is a genius.
About the colors, I think the animators have a shared inspiration of using thr color palette of the cover art for each saga. Cyclops was red and dark, cerci was pink, ocean was blue.
So About Hades..... It is entirely reasonable to think he would be in something called the underworld saga, however his absence becomes more understandable when you look at ancient Greek culture. The first thing to remember about Hades is that The Greeks were terrified of him to the point where we only have a few records of his name as usually he is referred to by a title this is because the Greeks thought that even mentioning his name was inviting terrible things. another thing is that hades is the god of the underworld and the dead his main job is ruling the underworld and making sure the dead stay put. which is likely why Odysseus never ran into hades because all he was doing was talking to a dead guy not trying to bring someone back from the dead or disrupt the realm and as such hades had no reason to appear (unlike with Orpheus) and more importantly (for the Greeks) their writers and story tellers didn't have to talk about him.
It’s also worth noting that it’s possible that the composition of the Odyssey (or parts of it) took place before Hades was recognised as a full deity as opposed to merely use as a place-name - Because up to a certain date, the name ‘Hades’ ONLY referred to the Underworld realm, with other gods (such as Poseidon and Persephone) being associated with it. The text of the Odyssey mentions Hades as a place, and during Odysseus’ visit there he encounters Persephone, plus there are mentions of Hermes (Psykhogogos) guiding souls there, who are judged by Minos. But as Mortius says, Hades as a god is never mentioned. In contrast, the Iliad gives details both about the realm AND has Poseidon mention Hades as his and Zeus’ brother as the ruler of the dead. The odd thing is that the two texts are generally considered to be from around the same era (roughly 8th century BC) and both contributed to the same author(s); I.e Homer, but since we can’t even be sure that he was a single person, and it’s possible that at least SOME of the Iliad’s verses are from considerably farther back. So it’s weird for only the seemingly ‘older’ (and narratively first) of the two tales to mention Hades the god and NOT the ‘younger’, but the possibility of patchwork authorship over a period could help explain this. But if we go with ‘both composed by a single author’, then your theory might explain why the Iliad is not afraid to reference Hades indirectly as a figure (through Poseidon), whilst the Odyssey shys away from having him directly portrayed… But both openly mention ‘Dread Persephone’ (although maybe Hades’ sheer newness as a figure in the pantheon might have made people less certain of talking about him).
It might be indirect Afina reference. Like, he imbrecing his identity as a warrior (And that is why monster wears helmet) and that is what Afina wanted him to be. Or I am overthinking it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah I also commented literally every depiction of Athena since antiquity has her helmet or an owl being their defining visual feature. Like not in a mean way but it's not unique or creative that's literally just what she looks like.
My interpretation of the Chorus is that they are the souls of the dead crew. That at first they were calling Odysseus "Captain "and trying to reach for him, but now are calling him a "Monster" and are moving away. It'd be horrifying to see some cared and respected for turning themselves into a Ruthless monster.
What I love about Gigi's animations is that you can tell they know a lot of the mythological background. I still haven't seen a reactor point this out but even in Just A Man, there were trees included in the animation. My favorite part of Odysseus and Penelope's love story is that he carved their marriage bed out of a living tree and then built their palace around it ❤ it symbolizes the strength of their relationship and love; it is unmovable and unchangeable. I LOVE that Gigi included an animation of this 😍
Just a little food for thought for the animatics. I dont kbow if it was intentional, BUT. In film making/cinematography, the good guys are usually on the left of the screen facing to the right, and the bad guys vice versa. But in mircy's polyphemus, polyphemus was on the left side anf Odysseus and his men were on the right since they were breaking into his home and killed his pet. But here when he talked abt himself using the horse, he was facing to the left so he was objectively the bad guy but when he starts to think if he became the monster, he was on the right while the monster is on the left which is... interesting.
It would be interesting to see this live, but Jorge has said that he wouldn't imagine this as a Broadway, but as something like an animated thing, which is why I love all of these animations and seeing the subtle/little differences and similarities between them.
The *_ONLY_* decent point Odysseus makes in his self-reflection is empathizing with Circe. She's the only one who deserves to be empathized with and viewed as humane.
Just when we thought we were completely done with Act One, Jorge made an announcement yesterday. Apparently, he hasn't seen a single dollar of royalties from The Troy Saga or The Cyclops Saga, so the cast got back together, rerecorded them, and he's releasing them under his own LLC, Winion Entertainment. I'm so excited to hear the new versions, but that means we're gonna have to relive Polites's death. Fuck Blair Russell and Blair Russell Productions.
The stream just ended and I won't spoil anything but holy shit... I won't tell you to prepare yourself, because you can't. It probably also hurt because he debuted the Official Concept Album version of Troy Saga and Cyclops Saga, so we watched all of Act One.
To be fair, Hades never showed up in the Odyssey, it was Persephone that presumably sent the ghosts to haunt Odyessus. Hades was busy petting his dog and tending to the sudden influx of souls.
A cool tip for amplifying the emotion of a scene, is to add something to contrast it previously. To ease the mind into drawing a comparision. So when mortius showed you the april fools “monster”, he was (intentionally?) gonna make watching the real one so better. Cause when your brain has its tone set on silly fun “rawr rawr rawr”, then immediately followed up by the serious “how has everything been turned agaisn’t us” it goes all the much harder… Which works so well back to back
I love the fact that the cords that play in the first 2 seconds of monster are the same cords as the beginning of horse and the infant. In the first song he was going into battle but all he wanted was to get back home and here he is fighting an emotional battle but his goal still remains the same, to get back home to his wife and son. Love this musical so much❤❤
The connection you made at 13:30 about gigi’s depiction of oddy’s monster having athenas helmet to me seems really interesting. Cause the monster that oddy was originally battling with in himself, is what athena was modelling him to be wasn’t it. “You've grown soft, your dead friends can attest, put your emotions aside” - goodbye Athena’s perfect general, doesnt dwell on the morality of the situations, on the suffering of humans, or the emotional trauma the winning decisions might bring. Athena’s teaching from the start have been “be the general that always makes the smartest decision that ensures victory” and to never question who get hurt by what you choose. Him making that decision by the end of the song. Is him falling back into that role, that lack of humanity. For why is a god so different from a human? A god is its domain, not a human who can sway between shades of gray. Athena is the god of wisdom, strategy, and war. Athenas as oddy’s patron, learns from her it’s only 0 to 100. From your talks in (luckruns out?) you’ve noticed that oddy’s lacks the capability of taking in multiple values at a time. In troy, he’s athena’s soldier. When introduced to polite’s virtue, and when he feels guilt he pivots. When it doesnt work, he pivots back, to the only thing that worked before. He can’t have his own values, it’s always a 0 or 100 from others. I wonder where’d he learn that from. Is Oddyseus’s monster is athena’s making?
I saw the monster figure's helmet plume thing as being representative of Odysseus' armour, since that's the kind of helmet he wore when defeating the Trojans, so that was the first time he was a "monster", when he dropped the infant.
The Athena helmet connection is very valid but it's worth mentioning that's the "usual" greek helmet to represent she's a warrior goddess, Odysseus and co wear it too in just a man! :D
Odyssues's backing vocals could also be athena summoning them as like her show of support. Since this is what she wanted him to be all along and theres no way athena hasn't been watching this whole time.
If you listen to the very begining of "The Horse and the Infant" and then the very beginning of "Monster". You will notice they both start off similar. With a slow buildup and then you will hear the "Man motif" and the "Monster motif" respectively.
@@VegaTheLyra them saying monster still fits that. The soldier that fell from Circe's castle had a whole rant, so the souls could very well have more to say about Odysseus besides what we hear in Underworld
i am soo happy you are talking about thisss!!! 25:30 I was soo shocked how you told some of the songs names. I am pretty sure you also said something like "Oddyseus will be 'done for' bla bla bla" I was like duddeee? And you also said "cause the end always justifies the means" in the infant song if I am not wrong. So everytime I hear you say a song's name or a exact same lyric from a future song I was screaming lmaoooo I happy you realized that
Like crazy idea but what if Penelope in this animatic takes the headband off of Odysseus as symbolization of Polites's beliefs of being merciful/ greeting the world with open arms being slowly forgotten and no longer believed in and instead the ideas of being ruthless and merciless takes over that belief. As in songs previously Odysseus is like "okay we should be more merciful" as that is what he learned from Polites-> AKA the headband (the headband symbolizing the belief wrapping around in his head if that makes sense srry im not the best at explaining things)
In this song it speaks about him not showing mercy in order to get back home safe and seeing his wife and child again so if he HAS to be merciless so be it which is not what Polites would agree with. Odysseus is becoming a monster while Polites was a saint. Why have a saints beliefs still in your head when you are corrupting yourself to go AGAINST that thought? why not remove it as a whole which is exactly what Penelope (in the animatic not as her as a person) was doing. after doing so he says "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" showing that he does not believe what Polites had to teach him anymore.
In some universe in the future, there's a version of this production where the 'canon' version of him accepting the monster and Gigi's version are combined. A broken, reflective Odysseus in blue lighting stands in front of the shadow warrior that represents "the monster." He is a bit hunched from the burdens of the journey so far, but when he takes the hand of the Monster and absorbs it, the stage lights shift to blood red, and his posture changes to that of the strong, straight standing monster Odysseus is accepting himself to be. Ugh I wanna see that so bad!
9:20 why is nobody talking about our best boys broken glasses in this scene! I noticed it the very first time I watched this I just never brought it up cuz I thought somebody else would and so far I've only found one person and that's just not enough!!!
I can't believe they didn't notice that Penelope pulled off Polites headband😅 How is he going to tell Mortius no spoilers Because This Pertains to this part which has already ended but in the original odyssey Polites was still alive when they met Circies Meaning Jorge went out of his way to add more trauma to the Odyssey

Remember me (Oh, woah-oh) I'm the reigning king of Ithaca (Oh, woah) I am neither man nor mythical ^^^ for the theory that it's the monster or something in Odysseus spawning the vocals. Alternatively the men are yelling "Monster" because they're _seeing one come back to the boat_
11:35 I also perceived it as it being in the order from least worst to most worst and him putting himself as the worst of them because in his perspective (and from what we've been saying the whole time cause lets be honest) he is the wort monster of them all cause no matter what happened he is still the one leading them, he was still the one that put his crew through that and he is blaming himself for it

It’s funny how he is starting to understand what Athena was talking about now that he is becoming something other than a man
Casper the 4 note monster motif you noticed is also in Remember them.
Nah, Hades ain’t dealing with his bro’s BS because now he’s got near 600 mens worth of soul paperwork to deal with.😂
The pulling the monster into himself ✨perfection✨
The reason most animators use the same colours is probably because they're using the colours from the album art
Something i noticed in this animatic is that on the line, "Oh ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.", the first one, it seems like the shadow of Odysseus is the one singing it.
Or maybe the shadow is like "Woah did he finally get my morality?"

I don't know that I agree with that interpretation of the (possible) soldier backing chorus. While I do think it's either the men or the souls, if it *is* the men, the only word they're singing is "Monster." I don't think they're cheering him on. I think they come across more afraid.

I love the detail in Gigis animatic at the infant line when the picture of Odysseus holding the Infant over the wall switches to the monster and the monsters hand being open. So Odysseus was holding on to the infant and the monster let go.
The whole animation is incredible.
Hahahaha "Divine Sugar Hades" is now Athena's new name 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Smart Hades
He's finally the monster rawr rawr rawr
That animatic was amazing!! One of my favorite parts was during the line "And if I gotta drop another infant from a wall in an instant so we all don't die"
On the word "die" when it changes to the monster shadow, his hand is open! Yes, in like a handshake sort of way, but also, it's open cause he DROPPED THE CHILD.
I noticed that too 😭
Interesting thing about the thunder saga (NOT A SPOILER) is that it contains two songs that NO ONE knows the names of or has heard any snippets of. Jorge hasn't released anything about them at all.
3:28 when Mortius pranks Casper is so perfect
This animatic is the soul reason why Epic should be a TV show and not a stage musical. Cuz a stage musical just could not reach the visual heights that these do
That's one hell of a pogface on Mortius omg
what watching gigi's animatics does to a mf
Hello! Regular viewer and Epic fan here. I just wanted to point out a tiny detail in the animatic
On 9:17 on the right corner of the screen, there is a pair of broken glasses. These glasses are Polite’s glasses.
Have fun with that information :D
Also, awesome reaction as always!
I didn't... I didn't need that extra pain in my life. Thank you very much. 😂😂😭😭😭
LMAO you’re welcome!!
Why… WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT
gotta say, I'm really enjoying the Polites fan club that is the two of you
Mortius is so hilarious for using the April Fools Monster bit HAHA
Also, the Monster and Athena connection is very valid. 13:23
Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and *battle strategy.* Odysseus was her *warrior* of the mind.
That's such a good interpretation! Ody's soldiers telling him that he's _been_ a monster to them, so why not be a monster to their enemies instead?
I'm pretty sure that no longer you lyrics meant that odysseus in his current state in the way he is going will get him killed so he wont make it home alive the more ruthless and colder version of him will and the open arms side of him dies in this song so just a great day for odysseus
The parallels GiGi does are just so good, we love you art hades
Spoilers here
There was originally going to be a Hades verse in “God Games” but it was cut for what ever reason, Jay has shared the instrumental track, and it was really good (though when has Jay ever released bad music?) I kinda want to know what the planned lyrics were, though.
@@VictoriaStarratt Spoilers
Maybe his grievances could be the fact he keeps getting his men killed or he disrespected his realm by barging in so Athena has to convince him that he tried his best with his men or like appeal to his general softer side which is seen in myths where people beg for their loved ones to return
I don't think thats the case because that instrumental was for a spoiler song and in the Odyssey, it's Persephone who shows up here, not Hades
Can't wait to see Casper's head explode at this one! The song is amazing and the animatic makes it *even better* and I couldn't imagine experiencing both for the first time at the same time!
Watching Gigi’s animatic so much made me notice something. At 9:18 you can see Polites’ broken glasses in the foreground. THANKS FOR THE TEARS *GIGI*
17:00- We see Penelope take off Odysseus's headband and thats when he goes full dark. That was Polities's headband and when she took it off that was symbolizing the end of Odysseus doing the "Open Arms" mentality. My god Gigi is a genius.
that sad little detail that he still imagines his son as an infant because he was not there to see him grow up.
Mortius’ scream when Penelope ripped off Polites’ headband was my reaction as well lmao
7:11 🎶” look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now” 🎶
About the colors, I think the animators have a shared inspiration of using thr color palette of the cover art for each saga.
@@amyhurst3629 true, I actually thought about putting that down as a possibility but tbh I just really didn't want to try and explain it
Sorry to say, but that is just the normal Greek helmet
Yes... But as Athena is supposed to be the perfect warrior and his teacher for years before this so it would make since for it to be a call back.
I just noticed Polites’s broken glasses at the bottom right- 9:18
My interpretation of the Chorus is that they are the souls of the dead crew.
Rawr rawr rawr
LONG LIVE WINION ENTERTAINMENT
"Holy cow" hits different after Mutiny
The color motiffs came from the album covers! Polyphemus is black and red, Circe is that deep pink, and Poseidon is blue.
To be fair, Hades never showed up in the Odyssey, it was Persephone that presumably sent the ghosts to haunt Odyessus. Hades was busy petting his dog and tending to the sudden influx of souls.
How would he be tending to the sudden influx of souls if Persephone sent them to haunt Odysseus? Because 99% of the influx was there. 🤣
A cool tip for amplifying the emotion of a scene, is to add something to contrast it previously. To ease the mind into drawing a comparision.
So when mortius showed you the april fools “monster”, he was (intentionally?) gonna make watching the real one so better. Cause when your brain has its tone set on silly fun “rawr rawr rawr”, then immediately followed up by the serious “how has everything been turned agaisn’t us” it goes all the much harder…
Which works so well back to back
I love the fact that the cords that play in the first 2 seconds of monster are the same cords as the beginning of horse and the infant.
“You've grown soft, your dead friends can attest, put your emotions aside” - goodbye
Athena’s perfect general, doesnt dwell on the morality of the situations, on the suffering of humans, or the emotional trauma the winning decisions might bring.

It took me a bit to see Polites' glasses in front of all the sheep and now I'm crying again

Casper. CASPER. You might be a son of Apollo. Like DUDE. MY DUDE. HOW???????
I NEED that TikTok that was mentioned at the end
18:52 My interpretation is that it’s the souls the dead soldiers calling Odysseus a monster, imagine how dark that would be
9:20 why is nobody talking about our best boys broken glasses in this scene! I noticed it the very first time I watched this I just never brought it up cuz I thought somebody else would and so far I've only found one person and that's just not enough!!!

^^^ for the theory that it's the monster or something in Odysseus spawning the vocals.
Alternatively the men are yelling "Monster" because they're _seeing one come back to the boat_
11:35 I also perceived it as it being in the order from least worst to most worst and him putting himself as the worst of them because in his perspective (and from what we've been saying the whole time cause lets be honest) he is the wort monster of them all cause no matter what happened he is still the one leading them, he was still the one that put his crew through that and he is blaming himself for it
Or this may just be me looking too much into it, idk 😂😂
