  • You have probably been told a thousand times not to use double negatives in English, but in this class I am going to show you that not only are double negatives ok to use, but they can give you an extra tool to express subtle meanings. See you in class!

    I'm from north of Brazil! We speak portuguese, a derivation of latin, but an adaptation of portuguese with an own way of to express phrases and words. We use very things like: eu não quero não ( "I don't wanna no") , eu não preciso não ( "I don't need no").

    In Spanish the same thing happens. Old forms still persist in rural areas, but they are "incorrects". When I was more ignorant than I am now, I used to correct people when I heard them say "nadies", etc.

    Hi Chris, nice to meet you, this class of you surprised me a lot, because in italian we do say "I ain't eat nothing" (non ho mangiato niente) and I always thought that the avoidance of double negative was completly english not latin. So is it a latin way? or just a modern way, registred first in latin?
    And also, in spanish you can hear "no he comido nada"; how is it possible that romance languages don't show this latin characteristic of not double negative?. I hope you can find the reason. I love your classes by the way.

    Christian, I have a doubt about "like/unlike".. For example.. "Many Americans don't like soccer like the rest of the world" or "Many Americans don't like soccer unlike the rest of the world".. Which of these is the correct sentence? I had many real life like/scenarios scenarios but I forgot them now..

    • @Canguroenglish
      @Canguroenglish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Krishna! 'Like' has two meanings: one is used to say that you enjoy something, and the other meaning is for comparison. And their positive and negative forms are different:
      Like (enjoy) = like/dislike
      Like (comparison) like/unlike
      I hope that helps!

    • @Krishna-nu8nv
      @Krishna-nu8nv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Christian...Yes, it helps.. But I don't know to use the like (comparison) in sentences in some cases...Whether to use like or unlike... For example, let's say hypothetically that "Americans don't have a good sense of humour....But the Brits have a good sense of humour"...So how do you combine it? So which of the following is correct - "Americans don't have a good sense of humour like the Brits" (or) "Americans don't have a good sense of humour unlike the Brits" ?

    • @Canguroenglish
      @Canguroenglish  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your example sentences should mean two different things. Remember that 'unlike' means 'not the same', so:
      '...like the Brits' (the same as the Brits)
      '...unlike the Brits' (the opposite to the Brits)
      BUT, depending on the intonation, 'like' can mean both 'the same' or 'not the same'. So, yes, it's possible that 'like the Brits' could also mean 'the opposite to the Brits', but this can really only be appreciated when you're speaking and you can add the necessary word stress.
      I APOLOGISE on behalf of the English language for this craziness!

    Then what's the meaning of "I don't neend no money" ( from cheap thrills)? Because I used to think it means I don't need any money! But if negative +negative is positive(as in many cases), then it would mean, "I need money"... What the sentence actually mean? Plz... Explain...

    No sé si tiene relación directa con el tema, pero acá en Chile la gente usa mucho la expresión "antes que nada", "primero que nada", "más que nada". Y está mal dicho porque se debiera decir "antes que todo", "primero que todo", "más que todo".

    • @Canguroenglish
      @Canguroenglish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's interesting. I think in English the 'nada' in your examples would be 'anything' and the 'todo' would also be 'anything'!
