Thank you for covering this. Not only was it cool to see a small system I had never heard of, but I think you might have inadvertently helped me solve a combat problem in my home game, and how I can simplify maps and combat in my dungeon delving style campaign without painstakingly designing every map and room. Thank you so much!
Just found a French translation of Ryuutama, and picked it up thanks to your review. I'll definitely run it at least for my kids. My wife might join us for this one.
you can also get a crit success by rolling 2 6s, so in this way if you roll 1d8+1d10 and they both come up 6 then that's a crit, OR if they come up as a 8 and 10 then that's a crit too! yay double the chance for crit! love your video regardless! more people need to know about this game!
I know this video is years old, but I love both the presentation and the actual game. Thank you for highlighting one of the best game systems if you want to have a nice chill time or introduce someone to a system that is comparatively rules light.
Excellent review Dave. I had heard of Ryuutama. I heard it described as Hayao Miyazaki mixed with Oregon Trail. I was debating getting it and now I'm sure. 😁
You know... I saw this on DTRPG and was debating about grabbing it... with this review, I think this is the kind of game I could get behind. I'm also a huge fan of dragons, so having the Ryuujin function kinda like an adventure patron/guardian angel would be amazing.
Table-talk RPGs is a great name! Great review as always, would love to hear other players experiences of playing the game. I've just bought 4 RPGs in the last few months (I blame lockdown) so might have to put the brakes on about this one, but it's definitely on the list! Thanks.
8:20 I'm one of those grognards (and goblinoid as well) you speak of, and I vehemently keep cutesy anime stuff off my Pathfinder/AD&D tables; HOWEVER, I DO like anime and I do like cute stuff, and this is an example of a game I've been eyeing for quite a long time, and for me, the art here works because it is not discordant to the gameplay, this system seems to propose a very "Studio Ghibli" whimsical take on roleplaying. When I read the fluff and the rules about this little game, I think "Oh, so it's like one of those semi slice-of-life anime about serene journeys with a chill atmosphere", that considered, I expect the world to look more whimsical and happy; that same style pisses me off when applied to D&D because I don't think that's where it belongs. That said, this seems like a breath of sweet, fresh air a group could take from all the blood, dungeons, taxes & politics from D&D and the like, it's a contrast to the games I usually play and I would very much like to try it.
As always, love your review style and presentation ... but, I found the new, what I might call "dot point sound effects", rather jarring and disruptive. The music though was a perfect choice.
I've run Ryuutama as a one-shot several times at conventions, and it's always been a lot of fun. Dave's right that it's very important that the traveling rolls be roleplayed out and not just brushed past. Also, nekogoblins make great introductory sources of adventure. (Cat-headed goblins.)
There may some some "official" adventures in supplements, but the core rulebook mentions explicitly that it's intended for each party to design and develop their own unique adventures. There is, however, a "tutorial" adventure with a nekogoblin thief in the book that it states everyone should play through to get a feel for the roleplay and systems of Ryuutama, as well as game design principles in general.
Is it just me or is the video out of sync with the audio? by a lot, too... like he is still talking about rolling and the video is well into the journeys mechanic
The first two zessions of ryutama were fun. Especially the world building. But after this the resource management began to be boring. Also the overall sleep management and all this little stuff. At the end it is a managemebt sim and this is something i wouldn't want as rpg. I want storys that take me away.
I LOVE Ryuutama. I wish there was a larger community for it.
The game now also exists and is greatly appreciated in italian! I had the honour to be the official translator :)
Very cool! Congrats.

As usual, your presentation rocks! Yet another game on my bucket list.
Thank you! Yeah, this is a fun little RPG.
Very cool! I love to see this gem of a game getting more attention! Your review got posted on the Discord run by the translation team for this!
I have just bought this and am so excited to play it! I hope I love it as much as I think I will!
The Brazilian Portuguese pdf was just relesead and I was looking for reviews. Thanks a lot :)
Seems like a heartwarming game! Also, nice choice of songs!

It looks so much fun! Like playing a J-RPG with friends. I absolutely adore the combat zone with items!

Terry Beal 2 That’s a pretty good description. Get your dysentery on! Or 赤痢 I guess.
This sounds really interesting to try. I definitely like some fluffy stuff would be a breath of fresh air.
Okay. I'm picking this one up. Not my aesthetic, but I really like the rules and the GM support items.
Eric from Bloat Games Yeah the rules are great. They could be a great framework for someone who wanted to make an old-school Final Fantasy TTRPG.
You know... I saw this on DTRPG and was debating about grabbing it... with this review, I think this is the kind of game I could get behind.

It’s a beautiful game in a lot of ways.

I love the collaborative world building sheets but still wrapping my head around losing one hit point when you use a non-proficient weapon

Sword World 2.0 is fully translated and the first core book from 2.5
I would love to see a video on Japan's biggest RPG not made in the west.

I can see why some people compare Fabula Ultima to this game
Another RPG that has this interesting Setup similar to Ryuutama is “Fabula Ultima”.
I've been meaning to check that out. It was sitting at the top of DTRPG's bestseller's list for three weeks.
Great video as always. Would this be a fun game to run as a one-shot?
deliciouslunch I think very much so.

Did you make up adventures or play the official ones?
Hello?
hi
There may some some "official" adventures in supplements, but the core rulebook mentions explicitly that it's intended for each party to design and develop their own unique adventures. There is, however, a "tutorial" adventure with a nekogoblin thief in the book that it states everyone should play through to get a feel for the roleplay and systems of Ryuutama, as well as game design principles in general.
I've used the sample nekogoblin adventure for one-shots and it works very well.

Man really thought that was a disgaea ttrpg
