  • Ryuutama is a tabletop roleplaying game with a focus on the players going through, put simply a journey. The “Natural Fantasy RPG” as it calls itself has a feel-good atmosphere to it and emulates the feeling of playing through a Miyazaki movie, going on great adventures from a place of wonder and curiosity and leading them into strange and exciting adventures along their path.
In this video we explore the RPG and look at how to play is and why you should give the RPG a shot!

One of my favourite games. Last time I ran it there wasn't even combat until game 6 and the players were still having fun.

I honestly love games where that can be the case and it's still a blast to play.
I love me some deep combat systems but also... It's nice to not have it in your face sometimes and be able to focus on the roleplay!

@@HollowTale I am going to run it again soon and one of the players hit on the idea of making a sort of Lupin 3rd character who goes around trying to steal priceless items from every city she visits but she plans on making the character really bad at it on purpose. Should be really funny.

I picked this up a few weeks ago to play with my family. Haven’t had a chance yet though. Still not totally sure how to run a “feel good” adventure - the tricks, tropes, etc. Would love to see more videos breaking things down with examples (I tend to loose interest when trying to watch let’s play videos due to the unfocused nature).
On a side note, it’s going to be hard for people to find a copy of Ryuutama for a few months. The translator just posted on reddit that the warehouse is sold out. But they are doing a reprint in a few months.

      That's amazing to hear!
It does feel like it would make an amazing family game due to how light-hearted it can be and how it's focused on that core journey.
I will be doing some breakdown series in the future on certain systems (starting with D&D and savage worlds) so I can certainly add ryuutama to the list in the future!
I hope the game goes well with the family!!

this seems like one of those interesting systems that would be a nice break in between big story arcs in my current tabletop game that has been running for almost 2 years now, maybe if we have one of those soon we'll try out this! thanks for opening my mind for this kind of play because I didn't even know there was an entire system for this, I would've probably just edited 5th edition D&D......

There is one exception to the clearly written rule statement: carrying capacity. The book does not outline that your worn equipment counts as 0 towards carried weight and has a 2nd carrying limit for max item weight worn.

What a nice video, I really appreciated it. Nice music, good flow of images, great flow of the explanation, and examples were very useful. This was a good elaboration of the manual that have a feeling of the game, instead of the usual boring summary of rules with a short opinion at the end that many other videos do.

Even if you don't use it as intended there are some game mechanics that could be cribbed for other systems with some work. That travel system in particular would be great for exploration-focused campaigns, and would be pretty easy to adapt to any engine that uses "dice type" stats (eg Savage Worlds). The game itself probably doesn't need to be as "cute" as it looks at first glance either, you could re-theme it to something darker - like have the journey the characters are undertaking be a desperate attempt to outpace the scouts of an invading army and warn the capital city in time to rally a defense, or to lead refugees away from that army when the defense fails.
