    Actually. I think Winchester made the 300 win mag to directly compete with the 7mm rem mag. The year the 7mag came out it pretty much killed off the 264 win mag. Winchester had to respond so they made the 300 win mag. Both companies were marketing their cartridges as a do it all caliber that’s better than the 30-06

    Good presentation young man. I think it really comes down to personal preference, as they are (to me,) simply a variation of a theme to each other. Thus, it’s more of a case of you can go more right with one over another than going wrong, based upon the specific needs.
    For me, the 300 RUM is hard to beat! Very flexible in terms of cost, bullet/ brass selection, reloading data (you can load it down to 30/06 specs,) and variety of rifle companies that chamber for it. But again, you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

    300 RUM was my only rifle for about 10 years in MT and AK, it's a hammer. I loved it but I should have picked a win mag instead but the allure of speed got me. But I shot everything from prairie dogs to moose with it, no regrets.

    I am amazed that he did not include the 300 norma which is the second fastest after the weatherby 300-378. The 300 norma is efficient as it has a shorter fatter case. The 308 norma is also efficient haveing less powder than the 300 win and almost the same speed. The best barrel life goes to the 308 norma as it uses the least powder. The best long range competition round is the 300 norma with the 300 weatherby second. The 300-378 weatherby would be the best but I discounted it because of the extremely short barrel life, also the advantage of extra speed is offset by the extra recoil. I discounted the remington 300 rum for the same reason, too much powder, and low barrel life as well as more recoil than necessary because the extra powder gives very little extra speed. The 300 win is very easy to find cases or ammunition which is a very big advantage, even though it is not the best round.

    My choice for a 300 would be the 300 WSM, it is more efficient than any of the others, has longer barrel life, easy to find ammo and very accurate. Tops out at around 3000 fps or so with 180's. Of the ones you mentioned here the good old 300 Bee or the new 300 PRC would be my choice.

    For hunting it would have to be the 300 H&H magnum. As accurate as the 300 win and possibly more accurate. More efficient and will never let you down even if the case splits ( conical shape). Yes expensive and hence only for loaders today.

      You’re right on the money! The 300 H&H was the original 300 magnum, and no one has bettered it efficiency or accuracy. Not the mention the smothers loading round, bar-non.
      I reload, and after taking all the 300’s into consideration, I went with the 300 H&H. The major problem was finding a good quality rifle. I ended up with a Steyr and an X-Bolt.

    I looked at most of these but considering all factors I think .300PRC will be the way to go. It's a modern design like the 6.5 Creedmoor, long neck and room for long high BC bullets, not belted, doesn't require a .338 sized action. What's not to like? Also shouldn't be too expensive to reload. It's top of my list now for my next rifle.

    • @ReloadingWeatherby
      @ReloadingWeatherby  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I made the video today I would probably pick the 300 PRC. The only reason I didn't and am still a little hesitant is availability of ammo and reloading supplies for the PRC. I could see this becoming the new 300 Win mag.

    I'm sending the 225 ELD-M at 3047fps out of my 300 Win Mag with no pressure signs. I could go faster, but found a good node there and felt as if that was plenty fast. I see no benefit in going to a PRC. If I didn't already own the Win Mag, I'd probably give the PRC a try.

    300 win is easier to reload. The 300 wby can be very sensitive on the double radius shoulder. They crush easily when seating and crimping bullet. Then it won't chamber. 300 wby brass is also pricey. I still love my 300 wby even though I have both. I usually neck size only if shooting in the same rifle. I only full length size when they get tight in the chamber. This increases the life of the brass.

    Absolutely nothing against Weatherby, but the 300 Win Mag and the 308 Norma, were made to compete with the 300 H&H. Not the 300 Weatherby. The idea was to create a less expensive rifle with similar ballistics, in a standard action. The 300 Win came closest to 300 H&H speeds, but with a way less efficient case. It’s take 3 to 5
    grains more powder to achieve the same velocities. The 300 WSM has a very similar powder charge, but doesn’t feed as nicely as a 300 H&H.
    IMO, the 300 Weatherby has too much recoil and muzzle blast for a lowly 30 cal. At that point, I would just step up to a 338 Win Mag, which is what I did.
    If you’re hunting under 500 yards, there is no need for any of the “ultra mags”. It’s preferable to step up in caliber, or just stick to a standard 300 magnum or even a 30-06. If you’re going to hunt under 350 yards, a 35 Whelen or a 9.3 x 62 with a 250 or 286 grain load respectively, serves you better than a 300 Weatherby. I do love the 257 and 270 Weatherby, they make sense to me. I also love the quality of the Weatherby Mark V’s. Very underrated in my opinion.
    Any how, just my 2¢ worth. Btw, the only rifle I’m terrified of is the 460 Wby.
    Thanks for the channel and your coverage of all things Weatherby.

    I completely agree with your choice of winner. Everyone I know who owns one loves everything about it, but every one of these choices also has an Achilles heel, and case head separation is this one's. They aren't too happy with that aspect but still love it overall. I've shot a handful of rounds and I was surprised at the lower recoil than what I anticipated. Still, my bucket list is to build a 30 Nosler. You can seat a long sleek bullet out within its Saami spec freebore and shoot VLD's with little trouble.

      But you can't seat out longer bullets in a standard long action with the 30 Nosler(Designed for long action OAL 3.34") out of the magazine, unless you hand feed them. My project is a 300-6.5-300 Wby donor rifle rebarreled to 300 WM or 30 Nosler. Then we can seat out longer bullets. Used $500 or much over depending on the make and $800 new (Vanguard) + $600 -800 Barrel . Quite affordable. But I might lean to a 7 MM, Have my old 1917 US Enfield in 35 Whelen. But its highly inefficient, overbore, barrell burner, requires a lapua size action and factory ammo is 5-7$ a round. Its like using a top fuel funny car to get groceries 🤣.
    The 300wm is the cartridge by which all other 30cal magnums are compared to.
    The 300wby is an improvement over the 300wm but still carries that useless f..king belt!!
    The 300nos hobbled itself by sticking to a 3.4" coal. And rifles chambered in it aint cheap....neither is the ammo.
    The 300norma is a beast....but still requires a lapua sized action and factory ammo aint cheap.
    The 300prc is my choice but is hamstrung by having only 2 factory ammo choices currently.

    I shoot 2000k Yards with my 300rum. It’s a little more than you described. I send 215’s at 3250 FPS. That’s what you list a light 180 at. These big overbore 30s need heavy bullets. They would actually work best with heavier twist rates like 1/9 or a 1/8.5 so the could stabilize 230’s. I don’t waist my time with 180s, but I know I could get them to at least 3400fps. The problem with that is, a 180 isn’t designed to move that fast. Pushing them over 3000fps is past their construction and they will most likely frag on impact and not penetrate deep into large elk or moose sized game. I will admit though, it is not a cheap or an efficient cartridge.

    • @ReloadingWeatherby
      @ReloadingWeatherby  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct, the RUM is meant for heavier bullets. And yes you can get faster velocities than what the books say. I've noticed that my 300 WBY goes 100 FPS faster than the book says. So do you have a faster twist rate for the bigger bullets? You really have to reload to get the full potential of the RUM. Factory ammo is slow for the RUM. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @JohnDoe-du6yi
      @JohnDoe-du6yi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReloadingWeatherby I have a 1/10 twist, and it stabilizes the 215 great. But I want a higher BC bullet so I just got some Hornady 225gr ELD match bullets to try out. They have a .777BC and the box says 1/10 twist right on it. So I’m excited to try them out. If they stabilize, they will be insane with a .777bc at approximately 3150fps. This would equate to 5000lbs muzzle energy, and with a 100 yard zero only 4 mills of drop at 1k. That smokes most everything out there, even the 338 lapua can’t compete with that. A 338 shooting a bullet with those BC’s are much slower, like 2600-2800 because they are 300gr.

      Ash Merch in 26" barrels the 300RUM and 30-378 Wby run at the same velocities, I know I loaded both and crony'd them. With the 28" barrel Weatherby usually installs now plus a muzzle brake (over 30" total to deal with) the 30-378 can get closer to using all that powder. In. 26" barrel the big 30-378 spots tons of powder still burning in the air when it should be smoke. My 26" Rem700 LSS goes between 3350-3400 fps over my MagnetoSpeed with. 180 grain Accubond. A death-ray on the hunts.

    • @samueladams1775
      @samueladams1775 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ReloadingWeatherby agreed. While both the 300 RUM and 30-378 would both benefit from the longer barrel, the Weatherby would benefit the most I think. I have compared my 300 RUM to a friend's Weatherby and his rifle is a flame thrower compared to my rifle. I suspect it could even put to good use a 30 inch barrel, but that not only adds more weight, but also the rifle starts getting a bit awkward at that length.
      One thing I like about the 300 over the 300 Win.Mag. is I can load full power, or load for a Win.Mag, or 30-06 power. That way I am not destroying the deer and antelope, but can up the power for elk and moose using the A-frame and Nosler partition bullets. And yes both the 300 RUM and 30-378 are barrel burners. Even with the Krieger barrel I don't expect more than 1200 rounds before accuracy is affected and the Weatherby is even worse lol. Maybe 1000 rounds, but more like 900 depending on your loads.

Follow-up shots are so fast you are not aware of working the bolt. It's a little harder to find a rifle so chambered but they are out there and well worth looking for. For 30cal ELR? The RUM.
    For hunting? The H&H.
    They all perform similarly, but the WM/PRC is a little cheaper and lighter than the RUM/NORMA/WBY.
    The RUM squeezes the most juice out of the loading for the velocities, and is a little easier to get parts for.
    Go 300Norma if you want a larger platform for marginal gains.

      @@ReloadingWeatherby A buddy of mine has one is the only reason I knew that. My neighbor owned the Ford dealership in our little town. He went up to Kodiak island and shot a Kodiak with a real .300 Weatherby in 1974. Great video!

    And where is a big improvement on the old 300 H&H? If you need more than it get a 338 or 375

      Sorry for the late reply, yes you have a point. Out to 400 yards there isn't a big difference between the old 300 H&H and a 300 Win mag or Weatherby.

      That is hyper velocity speed. You use monometal bullets?
      I have some old ( Vietnam era) 30-06 sabot rounds with 5.56 bullets but I was told I would have jacket separation as soon as the bullet left the barrel because of friction at that speed.

    300 wby is not a barrel burner. It is not overbored.

      I never said it was a barrel burner, and I didn't say it was overbored.
