  • In this video I find the limits to my 300 Weatherby with a Barnes 175 grain LRX bullet. I loaded it up with RL-22 and did a ladder test to see the top velocity of my rifle. I also shot my 270 Winchester and my friend brought his 30-06 Springfield.

My 26" Sako 75 .300 Wby loves maximum loads with the bullets just touching the lands and grooves. I use only RE 22/25 for my 300wby loads. Up to 200 grain partitions.

Happy Birthday Austin! It turned out to be a great birthday celebration at the range! Nice groups, crazy velocities with your 300 Wby. You were into 300 RUM territory and just about nipping on the heels of factory 30-378 velocities. And you found your pressure limits. A productive birthday at the range!

How far are you jumping and what is the barrel length? I couldn't see any ejector swipes but definite craters. I had a Savage Axis 1 in 6.5CM. I got a deal that I could not refuse. I have owned a Weatherby Mark 5 with a custom 30inch barrel for 40 years. I bought it to shoot at a 1000 yard range plus take elk hunting. I have used RL 22 for many years . I have hunted coyotes with 100 fmj and taken coyotes at 600 yards with little adjustment. With those bullets i could shoot direct on target at 250 yards. I don't buy high end bullets like barnes or any solids but a good standard bullet that opens to a size of a nickel,up to 600yards. I have taken elk or deer at 600 to 800 yards and each time .the animal dropped.

Oddly when I hear a discussion of cartridge "efficiency" I start to shut down. Usually, not this time, the term is used to describe a new cartridge that is NOT as fast as what it is designed to surpass. Personally I don't concern myself with those things. If it delivers a bullet at a higher velocity and more punch, I like it. Do I need that higher velocity? How can I tell, the buck/bull didn't complain. My Ram 2500 is probably not as "efficient" as a Prius , but I don't care.
