      Exactly my issue!! How on earth is everyone supposed to get to London?? I mean, the Dursleys and the Weasleys live reasonably close (how the Weasleys did it before 1992 still remains a mystery to me: Mr Weasley's car was a first time in 1992, in 1993 and 1996 they had MoM cars, in 1994 Molly called a taxi in the village for the first time, in 1995 they took the underground from Grimauld Place. And how did they get home every time??), but how about the kids from Wales or Ireland? Or even Scotland? Do they travel all the way down to London only to travel back up north???? And how on earth do they never meet anyone else, especially when Dobby blocks the doorway?! It bothers me SO MUCH and even more that J didn't mention that the "solution" has the same and even bigger flaws.

    "Three hour train ride"? From London to the Highlands? Are you having a laugh? That's more like ten hours. If the Hogwarts Express can do it in three then that would be true magic. In fact, if any train in the South-East actually showed up on time the muggle-borns would probably faint from shock.

      The train leaves the station at 11 AM, but doesn't get to Hogwarts until it's dark outside. It's not dark out in September till around 8:30, so that'd be about a 9.5 hour trip.

    I've always thought that Hogwart's Express was actually used because it gives a chance to spend time with schoolmates or to meet new friends. I mean, sometimes there's no need to travel as fast as possible, sometimes you can just enjoy your journey (especially if you can eat tons of candies at the same time).

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      This! There's a lot to be said for a journey helping set the tone and helping really separate the experience of the school year from the usual rest of their lives. It's got to help people feel more focused and committed when there's a nice thick time/mental border between being at school and being elsewhere (with the small exception of Hogsmeade for a bit of socializing later, but that's well contained and still takes a walk). Idk maybe I'm just romanticizing it but I'd like to think travel would be one of the best things about going to any boarding school with a lot of natural grounds around it.

    I think you missed a pretty important reason why the hogwarts express is used. I think at least part of the reason the train is used is because it gives the new students time to meet other students and start to perform friendships so they dont feel as nervous when arriving at hogwarts for the first time and it gives students that have been to hogwarts before time to catch up with their friends so they dont have to do it during the first day of school.

      His Horcruxes would still remain. Thus Harry could not have killed Voldemort using an assault rifle. However, if he did so by traveling back in time and shooting him before he when he was a baby which still feels wrong despite him growing up and killing thousands of people, would be much more effective as he could not have established his Horcruxes at that point would likely prevent the reign of Voldemort. The problem with this is there could be many unexpected consequences or a paradox as if he died as a kid, Harry would not become the 'Chosen One' and never travel back in time which would allow Voldemort to live and so on

    It's 4 times a year. Once to get to school, Christmas Holiday is two trips back and forth and then once when they come home.
    Also, it's more like a 5 or 6 hour train ride they leave before noon and get there at around 5 or 6 for dinner. It could be longer because it's always night when they arrive and the sun goes down in England a little later in September because they are closer to the north pole.
    The way they hide it is that, most boarding school students in England leave for school around September 1st so train stations are rather busy that day with families sending their teenage children off to school.
    On a fun note, I have a picture of me with the trolley between platform 9 and 10.

      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Perhaps, but voldemort was supposed to be out of the country both those times and I seem to remember him flying over water for at least one of them. Perhaps the distances to apparate across the north sea was too far? In theory you could still just circle around to the channel side, but who knows. Also, we never see anyone apparate more than twice in succession so its not clear there isn't any sort of cost or cooldown, particularly if its a really long distance one rather than just across a room or something.

    • @Agateophobiadragon
      @Agateophobiadragon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Neil Briggs I think of the names when I approach this problem.
      Apparate and Disapparate.
      In the definitions of the prefix, "dis," we find that it can mean, "a reversing force."
      This tells me that since apparating is like teleporting, then disapparating is to teleport with a reversing force, essentially teleporting back to where you were before the first teleportation.
      I feel like this would be quite limiting, even for Voldemort, especially of there are limiting distances, cool-down times, and etc other factors that go into apparating.

    • @TravelinJenB
      @TravelinJenB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, you can only go so far when apparating. The other thing is you have to be able to exactly picture where you are going. So if you're going somewhere with no places you're familiar with in between, apparating isn't really an option. Also the use of apparate vs disapparate is just like using appear or disappear. In other words, if someone with you leaves they disapparate, and if someone not with you comes to where you are they apparate. If you do it yourself you apparate.

  • @Hammerandhearth
    @Hammerandhearth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    There are a number problems with Rowling's origin of the Hogwarts Express.
    1. The ministry procured the locomotive in 1830, this is a year after the Rainhill trials and the establishment of the first true railway from Liverpool to Manchester. Trains looked very different back then, nothing like the current Hogwarts Express.
    2. The Crewe works, where the locomotive was built, wasn't established untill 1840.
    3. The current (movie) hogwarts express is a Great Western Railway Hall class built in 1937. GWR engines were built at Swindon, not Crewe.

As someone who would be 9 days younger than Harry (my best friend back in school was born on July 31, 1980), I have to defend their use of the library. I remember the time when not all information was at your fingertips, and though the internet existed, it's existence wasn't widely known until a few years after Harry started at Hogwarts, especially by kids (I heard about it on Channel 1 in 1994), computers ran on DOS with single-color monitors and dot matrix printers, and with wizards not using computers to begin with, I would be more surprised to see them using something other than books, though you'd think they could at least have a magical card catalog.

    Can you do you a video on how stupid countercurses are? Like Reducto and Bombarda should be the most effective combat spells because they aren't combat spells and therefore have no countercurses. Case in point when Ginny explodes the Death Eater in Order of the Phoenix and there's nothing he can do about it.

    • @bennett8921
      @bennett8921 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing with spells like Reducto and Bombarda is that: a) they are a *hell* of a lot more difficult to use than combat spells and b) roughly three times as difficult to control. Ginny is a *very* skilled witch, and so can control the energy of these spells enough to make them effective. An average or poor wizard would have much more trouble casting these difficult spells, and it is likely that they would either go in an unintended direction or just fizzle out before doing any real damage. Combat spells such as Furnunculus or Stupify can still be difficult to cast, but for different reasons. Rather than the energy from these spells being "wild", it is simply slippery. Once you get a hold of it, it is fairly easy to point in the right direction and make it do what you want.

    • @chloec4009
      @chloec4009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then why do "skilled" wizards still rely on curses and hexes. Other than Pettigrew blowing up half a block, I can't think of another instance where "skilled" wizards, like Ginny apparently, use them in combat. We know Harry is capable of using Reducto very accurately as he uses it in Goblet to free Cedric from the vines. Why then, does he not use it against the Death Eaters or Voldemort in the graveyard unless he's just ignorant/stupid or it's a plot hole?

    • @bennett8921
      @bennett8921 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chloe C Because they're difficult to use. If you're driving on the highway, you can choose not to use clutch. It's easier to change your speed, and in the end it is more effective. But it's also really hard to not use clutch. So you use it. It's easier to use even though it's ultimately less effective.

    Honestly, they could use a lot. You mentioned pens and pencils, cars, et cetera, but things like electric lights instead of torches, using the house-elves instead of Filch as the caretaker(s), and the entire Wizangamot system (and pretty much the Ministry in general, given its corrupt nature) are just so wrong. I know that electricity doesn't work well in the presence of magic, but there's got to be SOMETHING that can fix that. I, for one, can't imagine going an entire school year without my iPod (or a piano- there are no pianos either! NO MUSIC? WHAT?). Filch clearly doesn't want to be there, so just use the elves who LIKE WORKING!!!! The Wizengamot is just awful; there's not a democratic system that I know of, and bribery is so rampant that it's basically expected. The monetary system is too complicated for a society that doesn't teach math; you can just melt the gold down, sell it, then convert it back into Galleons = Ponzi scheme = rich in twenty-four hours. Fudge is a complete pendejo at all times, Umbridge is a popote-pajita-pitilla (they all mean straw in different accents, and swear words in others), and somehow they don't get kicked out for all that they did.
    I should really stop now before going off on even more of a rant about how stupid people can be. This has been my eighth long comment of the day (not including e-mails!) so I'm getting tired of typing.
    Oh yeah; typewriters. THEY'RE NOT ELECTRIC! THEY SHOULD WORK FINE IN THE PRESENCE OF MAGIC! YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO HAND-WRITE EVERYTHING WITH QUILLS AND PARCHMENT! USE TYPEWRITERS AND PAPER OR JUST A NORMAL PENCIL! YOU CAN ERASE WITH THEM! AAAARRRGGGHHHH!

      Filch is actually a really sad situation. Filch likely grew up in the wizarding world, so when he discovered he was a squib there weren't a lot of appealing options. He either starts a life in the muggle world, a world he's never known and isn't allowed to know about him or take whatever job you can get, despite the options being extremely limited. If you look at it, his Hogwarts position seems to be charity. House-elves do a majority of the cleaning and professors often patrol the castles if deemed necessary and carry out detentions themselves. Filch probably grew very bitter over the years from jealousy and at times bullying and turned into a miserable old git.
      It's probably also a lot harder to transition from magical world to muggle world. It's much more common for muggle-born witches and wizards to be born than squibs. Wizarding children aren't allowed to practice magic before school, giving them only a slight edge. For a squib you'd need to find a bordingschool, your teachers would not be able to support your transition because they're not supposed to know about the wizarding world and you'll be years behind education-wise. It's probably easier if there's muggles in the family that could help you though.
      Agree on everything else though. :D

    The only problem I have with the hogwarts express is the fact it doesn’t have any stops on the way. Hogwarts is based in Scotland right? And kings cross is in London at the bottom of England. Do students from northern England and Scotland have to travel to London just to go north again? I mean they would be going further to get the train than to get to hogwarts. And there is no mention of students from the north traveling straight to hogsmead and if they did it would be inconvenient for them to arrive one by one. Is there a different form of transport available to them since there is no sense going from Scotland or northern England, to London (bottom of England) and go straight back up to Scotland. It just doesn’t make sense.
    Edit: and you can’t expect there to not be a single student from Scotland since Scotland competed in the quidditch world cup meaning it’s populated with wizards and hogwarts is the only magic school in Britain

      Layton pro 🎩⚡There are a few possible answers to this. One of them, quite simply, is that Platform 9 3/4 is linked to multiple different train stations across Britain and the letter sent to each student directs them to the nearest station. Alternatively, there may be multiple trains (though the books imply the first moreso than the second given the fact that there are students from all over aboard right from Kings Cross). However, of course the Hogwarts Express doesn't stop... That's what "express" means in that context. It means it's a train that runs non-stop from origin to end destination.

      I expect that even though it is very inconvenient, students from Scotland need to go to the London anyway. There isn't any other place to buy necessary school supplies outside Diagon Alley (the other closest will be probably somewhere in France). I guess you could find a few books, quills and potions ingredients in Hogsmeade or other (partially) wizarding villages, however for robes, wands, brooms etc. there is nowhere else to go except London. And don’t forget about money. The only place you can withdraw, or store larger amounts of your Galleons is at Gringotts. It seems to me that the wizards became “slaves” of their own ways. They never thought of expanding all the shops outside the London, because why do it, when you have instantaneous travel. But once the wizards started to really hide, the school became mandatory and you add the children to this mix… Well that’s how you get problems.
      I guess that’s why the train only goes from London to Hogsmeade even though the students come from all over British Isles. All the important things are available only in London and the families must go there for supplies and other wizarding necessities regularly anyway. This way you also make sure that you don’t overload the Floo network and allow everybody to get to London easily. Everyone will travel at different time to different place - perhaps even to their friends’ houses.
      And what about the crowds of wizards? I always suspected there is much more going on in the King’s Cross. I believe there are countless secret enchantments that make all wizards almost invisible by making them “forgettable”. The muggles see them, wonder why they are so weird, but once they get around corner, they forget about them (also there will be some ministry workers undercover to help if things get out of hand). My headcannon is that’s the reason why some people suddenly forget to buy tickets or get on the train - the magic can go a little wonky occasionally.

    There are a few things I would like to point out. While steam locomotives have been around since about 1805, the locomotive in the film, Olton Hall, was built in 1937, over 100 years after the first heist. But, I do have a theory on why it is the locomotive used by the wizards and witches of Hogwarts. You see, she wasn't the first locomotive stolen, but may have been one of MANY taken. The first train may have served well for a while, but eventually more and more students would take the train and soon, you would need a more powerful locomotive. So, after many more locomotive heists, presumably from ones sent for scrap, in the 1960s, British Railways were modernizing, in a big way, new diesel locomotives were making steam obsolete and hundreds of locomotives were being placed on the scrap lines. Olton Hall was sent for scrap in 1963, but she was a fairly powerful locomotive, easily able to haul the amount of coaches required while not requiring much of an infrastructure overhaul to carry her. So, the ministry of magic stole their final locomotive, saved from scrap to run forever for the magicians of another world.

    Other ways wizards can benefit from muggle technology? Guns.
    Not only has Rowling herself said that a muggle with a shotgun would win against a wizard with a wand, that's not even the crux of the matter.
    Let's say it's possible for wizards to throw up shield charms that protect against bullets. I mean, I'm not sure they can. I can't recall them shielding against many other things than magic. Also they are often caught unaware when someone just gets close enough to punch them instead of throwing spells at them, and a fist is a lot slower than a bullet. But let's for the sake of argument say they can throw up bullet proof shields.
    And let's also leave aside the fact whether a slight combat advantage between an armed muggle and an armed wizard would do much in favour of the muggles. Wizards can still mind-charm, and muggles are largely unaware they exist, and so can't mount an offensive.
    Never mind all that. We're talking strictly about wizards vs. other wizards here.
    So let's say if a wizard attacked another wizard with a gun rather than a wand. Let's say bullet proof shield hexes are a thing.
    You still have to react in time. And you just can't.
    Wizard spells are so much slower than bullets. I don't know what speed they travel at, but it's not super sonic by any stretch. Mostly if someone throws a spell at you from the other side of the room, you'll at least have a chance to react to their voice before the spell reaches you. That's why voiceless casting is such a big deal.
    With a gun, though? Not only won't you hear the gunshot until after the bullet reaches you, because the bullet is travelling faster than the sound of the shot. Even if you did hear the gunshot, you just couldn't react in time.
    Moreover, the gun doesn't have the avada kedavra drawback of you having to genuinely mean it from the bottom of the heart or whatever. You just pull the trigger, and if you hit the person right, the person dies. If you hit the person wrong, they're at least distracted long enough for you to fire off a spell. Or hey. Shoot again.
    You know what would be terrifying? A sniper that could reposition instantly to another sniper vantage point and try again right away if he or she missed a shot.
    So why don't wizards, who really want other wizards dead, don't try to just snipe them instead of getting right up close where they risk countermagic?
    You know what you also have to do with spells? Aim. You have to aim them, and a wand isn't exactly an instrument designed for precision shooting. I don't care if you're Dumbledore or Grindelwald. You're not going to hit someone shooting at you with a sniper rifle with a well-aimed hex-shot.

      DisThoughts i feel like a lot of things are assumed here. also, they would have to learn to shoot a gun, because it isnt as easy as it looks. then you have all the regular drawbacks muggles have when using guns---which includes evidence. AK kills with no trace, and while im not sure if they have magical CSI, it is something to consider. also, once they see the gun, it would be pretty easy to defend against. afterall, you have to show the gun before shooting it (barring sniper scenarios and the like), so there would be at least a hot second to do something. plus, youre figuring that everyone is fast and adept with firearms, which isnt usually the case. im not saying guns wouldnt be a viable competitor in killing tools for magical folk, but i feel as though there are prolly many reasons they arent used.

    • @carlrood4457
      @carlrood4457 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The full moon doesn't completely explain it. One would assume teachers normally arrive several days before students in order to get settled. It's certainly how real schools work. However, it's possible Remus was unable to travel BEFORE the full moon because the Ministry would likely have wanted to question him regarding where Sirius might be hiding or what routes he might take. He's the one living person who knew Sirius best, so they would want to see what he might know that could aid in a speedy capture.

    • @faithjones3196
      @faithjones3196 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, maybe he didn't want to go before the full moon as that would have meant he would have had to transform while at Hogwarts (well in the Shrieking Shack). I know that he would have to do so eventually anyway but if I were him I'd want to put off transforming there for as long as possible because the shrieking shack always reminded him of when he would get help from James, Sirius and Peter, who are either dead, presumed dead or convicted for being a killer. I could be wrong but that's what I always imagined when I thought about it.

    I think the reason why voldemort flew to malfoy manor and Godric‘s hollow is because he‘s too far away at that time to apparate there. While Harry was in Malfoy Manor voldemort had been of to Nurmengard to kill Grindelwald. I actually forgot if it was mentioned where he‘d been while harry was in Godric‘s hollow, maybe in Germany or somewhere else, looking for the elder wand. The distance you can apparate is limited, so it makes sense that he had to fly to a certain point to apperate from there. But please correct me, if I got something wrong or messed up :)

    • @simonvanberlo983
      @simonvanberlo983 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Julia You're completely correct. I thought you were only able to apparate to a place in the same country.

    • @matt755spruce
      @matt755spruce 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why not apparate multiple times? There isn't a cooldown on spells and magic dosnt seem to dramatically tire people, so if you can't reach with one spell do it in two or three or fifteen.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We never see anyone apparate more than twice in succession so its not entirely clear that it is unlimited. Voldemort as a very powerful wizard would presumably be able to do more, but its never really directly shown or confirmed. Plus its possible there are some sort of international boundaries you can't just freely apparate across and while voldemort is in charge of britain he is actually on the continent both of those times so might have to stay under the radar so to speak.
      There's also some confusion where its not clear if you can apparate to random places or not. The lessons seem to emphasis envisioning the location to get there, but then we see examples of harry and crew apparating to random places all over the country in book 7 so who knows. If there is some necessity to know actually know a location or have some other guide to it then maybe voldemort can't just chain apparate from anywhere.

    • @Sentariana

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Key word "defeated", not killed. Dumbledore imprisoned grindewald in nurmengard (poetic justice since that was grindewald's own prison), which is where voldemort tracks him down in book 7 on the trail of the elder wand.

      You could still set up a floonetwork hub with a unique ID (so even if you pronounce it wrong there is nothing else nearby it could redirect you to) just a short carriage ride away. Then you just set up a few local hubs throughout the areas of Great Britain, so you don't need hundreds of contections. Doesn't require a whole train station, and people going to a few random houses and/or businesses is a lot less suspicious than the same group arriving at a train station multiple times a year, yet never buying a ticket.

      Yeah, most likely, I mean they leave London at 11am and get to Hogwarts just in time for the Sorting and dinner, which, if you assume it's Brit style, is around 6/6.30 pm. Count getting off the train, the commute by carriage or boat and the excitement of seeing each other again after the summer (for non first years), my guess is they arrive in Hogsmeade around 5pm, which makes the train ride around 6hours.
