Especially since they butted heads so often, him being a prefect and them being loveable dastardly pranksters. Also, the farts every time his name is said wrong had me dying.
Honestly, the sadest part is that I don't think anyone ever knew he was under the imperius curse, including himself, so coming back to his family after so long, regardless of what he is doing at that moment, they would have to think that the past 3 years were of his own choice, which had to leave some sort of mark on them
I'm unconvinced he was under the Imperius during the second task because he's so emotional that he runs straight at Ron when he's pulled from the lake, so he's biased to give Harry full marks. He might love rules but this is the same guy that bet ten galleons he DIDN'T OWN on a Quidditch match, he's not completely strait-laced.
I have two theories for the second task thing:- Peter Pettigrew was away looking for Voldemort as a rat. He may have been too focused on that or just forgot about Percy. Percy at the sight of seeing his brother almost drown, shook of the curse and without wasting any time jumped in after him.
I also think it makes a worse story if he is under the imperious curse. People can get stuck in their ways and make poor decisions and then find it hard to return to the right side. I don’t know I’ve just always liked Percy’s arc
@@celinavivian1162 Same! It’s much more interesting to have someone who’s genuinely misguided and messes up but in the end is able to reflect enough to change his ways. I have too many thoughts on the topic so I’ll leave it at that, haha.

Seriously can you actually find a single time that either his siblings or father actually acted like they even liked him?
I think Percy wasn’t placed under the Imperius Curse until after Voldemort had returned and after it was discovered that Crouch Sr was killed and Jr got the Dementor’s Kiss.
I love how Crouch keeps calling him Weatherby. So insulting. Maybe that's part of why Percy didn't want to believe Crouch was not himself. He finally felt seen by his boss, something he wanted so badly that it blinded him to the painfully obvious truth: something is very wrong with Barty Crouch, Sr.
And how do you explain all the other people that would've known Crouch for longer than a year? Why didn't they know something was wrong? They would be more knowledgeable of him than an 18 year old who has only worked for him for less than a year.
@@1993digifan Maybe he was part of the "quiet quitting/work from home" craze? Or maybe no-one wanted to step on his toes by questioning such a hothead...
@@brandiarmstrong2902 You do know the series canonically takes place in 90s so there no Muggle fad for him to follow right? Plus that won't explain why Percy was left to do all the work if Crouch Sr. was just working from home.
I think Percy was just a bit of a prat at this stage in his life. Glad he grew out of it. Plus, wizards are often a bit touched in the head. Very obvious things often elude them. Probably why Snape's protective measure for the sorcerer's stone, though not shown in the film, was a shelf of seven potion bottles and a riddle that ran on pure logic. 2 bottles contained poison, 3 contained wine, one had a potion to go back through the fire you just passed, and one to pass safely forward through the next wall of flames. The riddle told exactly which bottle contained what, but was written in such a way that those who don't possess a whit of logic within them would be hopelessly lost trying to figure it out. My guess? At least half of that department would be among those who never made it out of that challenge.
@@brandiarmstrong2902 You are right, coming from an emotionally abusive family it makes sense that Percy would be desperate for just a sliver of validation from literally anyone since he LONG AGO gave up expecting any genuine support from his blood relations. You people want me to believe that it was so horrible for Percy to pick a well paying job over his blood relations than PLEASE find how many times his "loving siblings and pappy" weren't insulting, backhanded complimenting, dismissing his personal wishes, supporting the mistreatment of him by others, betraying a simple promise, or really just anytime that acted if they even liked him before he walked out on them. So was it really something to "grow out of" or was it just an abuse victim going back to the abusers since the bar for his personal happiness is so low they are least worst choice at this point?

You do know that Luna's mother died from a cauldron exploding? Seems like the stability of cauldrons is valid concern. But since it's not a happy funny thing people like you ignore it, just like you whine about car inspection.
I figured that Percy was under the Impirious Curse, but watching this it just hit me about his connection to wormtail. Now it all makes complete sense.
Because you can't imagine Percy walking out on the people that treat him the same way the Griffins treat Meg? No, no, no people like you support abusive and toxic relationships as long as you get to laugh at the misery of the family punching bag.
I like this theory, but as for him being a Slytherin, I can see him having the choice like Harry did. His two older brothers and parents were Gryffindors, and everybody sees Slytherin as the evil house, so I can see him asking the hat to put him in Gryffindor because he wants to be the "good guy" and also wants to share the house with his family.
While I enjoyed this video, I don't believe this theory. I see Percy as more of a parallel to Hermione's arc. They are both type-A personalities and their characters are how JK Rowling decided to showcase how differently people who live by rules react to chaos in their lives. Hermione learned that rules can be bent or broken when the need arises and that sometimes, it makes your life better. On the other side, Percy couldn't see a life without rigid rules and just wanted to hold onto any sense of normalcy that he could and he lost his sense of morality in the process.
Theory: Percy only was under the imperious curse for a year but he thought his family will hate him since they did not know he was under the curse but after two years he worked up the courage to talk to them
Or he left an extremely toxic environment only being willing to be around them because of what was basically the end of the world. Don't believe they were toxic? Please find anything in last four years before he walked out where you could actually believe his siblings or father even liked him or that his mother only liked him because he did what she wanted.
You know, one potential nickname for Harry could be “The Great Forgiver”, one account of the fact that he is the only wizard who has shrugged of EVERY unforgivable curse. You make a compelling argument. Percy loves his family, but Wormtail would know precisely how to coerce Percy into turning on them. The Imperius makes you think that doing what the caster wants will solve all the world's ills. Percy has always wanted to be a success and his father has never really wanted to do more than work in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office. His doing the work of a Department Head as a first year intake should have been suspicious, but his ambition may have been well known in the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Even though Crouch never bothered to learn the kid's name, his hard work would still have drawn attention. That Percy came back to his family after Wormtail's death strengthens the argument. You did a great job presenting your arguments. Good job!
"when Voldemort and Wormtail went to rescue his son, Barty Crouch Jr." I heard that with the missed context that Voldemort was actually Crouch Jr's real father.
Honestly it feels more like Percy had built up resentment of their family not having the best financial situation and a mixture of middle child syndrome. Growing up with Fred and George's antics would eat up a lot of their parents attention and then when Jenny Comes Along being not only the youngest but the only girl that his mother always wanted probably meant that especially with him being so well-behaved responsible and great in school he was easily pushed aside and ignored most of his life by his family or made fun of.
On the Wizarding World app it said “the maps magic includes the homonculous charm- this enables the user to track the movements of Hogwarts’ inhabitants” (Wizarding Weekly edition No. 4- discover Hogwarts, slide 7/ the marauders map)
Misnaming Padfoot Wormtail like that each time is going to become a new hobby of mine. It reminds me of my favorite British actor, Battlefield Counterstrike.
In Percys defense: He's literally the odd one out. Arthur - Molly Bill - Charlie Fred - George Ron - Ginny Which just leaves Percy who kinda gets left out, especially if most of them don't have the interests he does.
His pair was the 8th (3rd?) Weasley Child, between Charlie and Percy, who was killed during the first war. Explains Mr. Weasley's explanation (in the after math of the attack at the world cup) of the fear of the time, and the terror of seeing the Dark Mark above your home and knowing what is likely to be found inside. Also explains Bill's conspicuous silence and understanding to this explanation (He would have been old enough to remember the child...age 3-4 at birth, 5-6 and death).

personally i dont think he was under the curse for many reasons. one of which is he still expressed concern and love for his family, even if it sometimes was misguided. like the letter he wrote ron, telling him to stay away from harry. obv it was wrong but from his pov he was warning his little brother of a dangerous life. why i think he choose the ministry is simply bc he was tired of never being appreciated, always being misunderstood, and having his hard work go not only unnoticed but also mocked by his family. so, instead, he chose his out. he choose to believe the sweet lies being fed to him instead of more questions and mockery from his family. thats quite understandable in my opinion, not good, but understandable. and i get why people dont see justification of his words or actions he used against his family, but i understand where he was coming from. not completely, ofc, a lot of things he did were completely out of line. however i have said terrible things to my family because i felt secluded from them, they not only didnt get me but they also never wanted to listen to me when i told them what they were doing hurt me. so i became a prat to them honestly. i feel percy did the same. he was more than tired at that point and i think the final straw was that his own father didnt think he could get a job like that in the ministry, instead, from his prospective, his father didnt believe he could do it on his own merit. and ofc from our perspective its obvious he was just being used as a spy, from his he finally got his big break, his talent finally recognized. which is quite sad. the boy was desperate for any appreciation and felt he got none (which, from what we read, he doesnt from anyone but his mum. which is complicated) which is partly why i defend percy, or at the very least share his pov. the weasleys are amazing people, wonderful and kind. but they never understood percy and i dont believe they ever tried to, 'sides molly. the twins were cruel to him, i will say, their relationship is very complex and we dont have an exact reason why or who started to feel animosity. but anyway, alls that to say i personally just think percy deserved better and if you can forgive characters who made even worse decisions than his, i think you can forgive him aswell.
Regarding why Percy is a Gryffindor: he was sorted 4 years before the audience meets him. People can change. And as much as I love Fred and George and hate to point the finger at them, I wouldn't doubt that they are at least partly why Percy was burdened with being "the responsible one" once he went to Hogwarts. As for being on the side of Umbridge, that's simple: he just didn't know what she was actually like. When Scrimgeour was trying to get on Harry's good side, he brought up Umbridge, which I can only take to mean that Umbridge didn't see fit to tell her coworkers about her habit of carving up people's hands, because Scrimgeour doesn't seem like he's dumb enough to intentionally bring up someone that he knows Harry would hate.
I swear the Weasleys are my favourite family in Harry Potter! Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Charlie Weasley, Molly Weasley, Arthur Weasley, Bill Weasley and of course, Polychromatophilia Wappenschawings (That's an actual word)
How did Snape (or anyone) CREATE a spell? Like do they concentrate on what they want it to do and say it enough (maybe with the wand movements) until it works or something? Idk
I think this level of magic needs at least a Bachelor in magic to explain. Unfortunately the books never go past high school level. Try sending an owl to an MM (Magus Maximus) and see if they can give an explanation. I doubt these Squibs without any formal education could make a proper video about it.
@@tmorris7329 Except it's outright stated that Severus Snape created Sectumsempra. And the fact that the notes for it were in the margins of his Potions Textbook would tend to indicate that he created it while he was a student at Hogwarts. That's also why he and he alone knew the counter for it to save Draco and protect himself from it when Harry tried to use it on him.
@Phoenix137 It's probably very complicated and involved and requires a Witch or Wizard of extraordinary power. And we know that Snape fit all of those categories.
I'll be honest, Percy is one of those HP characters that I forget even EXISTS a lot of the time. I mean, he'll be gone for a while, then he'll show up and I'll go "oh, I forgot he was in this one".
Oh yeah, so horrible the exact same kind of sweater that he got the moment he stopped growing. So horrible to not want something from the toxic family. PROVE the Weasleys weren't a toxic family to him, find anytime that you could genuinely believe his siblings and father even liked him or that his mother didn't just like him because he did what she wanted.
Jonathan Maderos we cant be sure if this is accurate because it is Sirius that says this and he was no killed by the killing curse he was killed by the veil
anna fuller well the Movies went off in a different way in that area. Lestrange Hit him with the killing curse and he fell into the veil rather than just being hit by a curse and the veil taking him. So perhaps he meant the movies not the books.
I also think Percy’s rule following shows how a susceptibility to authority figures which seems like it might also make him more susceptible to a curse that gives someone authority over his choices…
lol im imagining effie trinket calling Primrose Weverdeen at the reaping and percy stepping forward and then katniss saying "boi u can go die in the hunger games"
I actually dislike this theory. I feel that Percy's Arc of trusting the wrong people and making mistakes but owning up to it and apologizing is important. So few people it seems can do that today.
Takes away from his character development and the narrative tensions within the Weasleys. If he was under the curse it would ruin the narrative at the end with Fred. I don't think J thinks about narrative and character development when he makes videos in favor of wanting to explain anything that doesn't make sense to him.
Agreed. I see the merit for the theory, but yeah, I think the only spell he was under was the spell of the allure of money and power. As a guy from a poor and underappreciated family, he saw a way to success and respect (which he got none of at home).
I know this is an older video, but i do want to address something. Crouch does not use Percy's proper name, but he does consistently call him "Whetherbee" unlike Slughorn who used different names for Ron. I think Percy either goofed in his introduction, or intentionally used a different name. I am more inclined to believe the former because Crouch clearly respects Arthur.
I think it works better for him NOT to be under the curse. Sometimes people screw up and make bad choices. It's important to be able to see your mistakes and seek forgiveness.
People also walk out on their toxic family and yet they are the ones in the wrong for no longer pretending that there was anything healthy in the entire relationship. Can you actually find any moment in the first 4 books where you could truly believe that Percy's siblings or father even liked him?
I think everyone, even J.k. Rowling herself, did Pencety Witthernings(Percy Weasley) dirty. She made him do all those things and then he didn't have much that redeemed him. So, I agree that it is possible he was under the imperius curse. If he wasn't, then everyone did him dirty.
The Weasleys did nothing to redeem themselves as a healthy family. If they weren't toxic do you really think it would've been so easy for him to cut them out for three years? Oh please, I beg you and everyone like you, PROVE the Weasleys didn't deserve to have Percy walk out them. PROVE that at any point before he had enough of them that his siblings or father even liked him.
More like Dionysus intentionally miss-saying his name cause he doesn't like heroes and he's gone WAYYY too long without a glass of wine, but the same idea.
It was frightening how much I enjoyed your voice and the feeling it gave me as you were describing what the imperious curse felt like. The tingles down my spine as I just gave in... it was .. . bliss . . .
Or is it an abuse victim just accepting his abusive family and their treatment of him that went on LONG before he walked out on them because the narrative says they are best simply because the worship Main Character?

Theory:
Percy only was under the imperious curse for a year but he thought his family will hate him since they did not know he was under the curse but after two years he worked up the courage to talk to them
Or he left an extremely toxic environment only being willing to be around them because of what was basically the end of the world.

Your kind do hate the idea of your fantasy replacement family having any hint of being so toxic one of them just walks out on them.

He turned on his family because they stood by Dumbledore and Harry.

personally i dont think he was under the curse for many reasons. one of which is he still expressed concern and love for his family, even if it sometimes was misguided. like the letter he wrote ron, telling him to stay away from harry. obv it was wrong but from his pov he was warning his little brother of a dangerous life. why i think he choose the ministry is simply bc he was tired of never being appreciated, always being misunderstood, and having his hard work go not only unnoticed but also mocked by his family. so, instead, he chose his out. he choose to believe the sweet lies being fed to him instead of more questions and mockery from his family. thats quite understandable in my opinion, not good, but understandable. and i get why people dont see justification of his words or actions he used against his family, but i understand where he was coming from. not completely, ofc, a lot of things he did were completely out of line. however i have said terrible things to my family because i felt secluded from them, they not only didnt get me but they also never wanted to listen to me when i told them what they were doing hurt me. so i became a prat to them honestly. i feel percy did the same. he was more than tired at that point and i think the final straw was that his own father didnt think he could get a job like that in the ministry, instead, from his prospective, his father didnt believe he could do it on his own merit. and ofc from our perspective its obvious he was just being used as a spy, from his he finally got his big break, his talent finally recognized. which is quite sad. the boy was desperate for any appreciation and felt he got none (which, from what we read, he doesnt from anyone but his mum. which is complicated) which is partly why i defend percy, or at the very least share his pov. the weasleys are amazing people, wonderful and kind. but they never understood percy and i dont believe they ever tried to, 'sides molly. the twins were cruel to him, i will say, their relationship is very complex and we dont have an exact reason why or who started to feel animosity. but anyway, alls that to say i personally just think percy deserved better and if you can forgive characters who made even worse decisions than his, i think you can forgive him aswell.
Very thorough explanation. Just not entirely kind I'd say

@@tmorris7329 Then how did they become lost/forgotten? Who created them originally?
I think this level of magic needs at least a Bachelor in magic to explain. Unfortunately the books never go past high school level. Try sending an owl to an MM (Magus Maximus) and see if they can give an explanation. I doubt these Squibs without any formal education could make a proper video about it.
@@tmorris7329 Except it's outright stated that Severus Snape created Sectumsempra. And the fact that the notes for it were in the margins of his Potions Textbook would tend to indicate that he created it while he was a student at Hogwarts. I actually dislike this theory. I feel that Percy's Arc of trusting the wrong people and making mistakes but owning up to it and apologizing is important. So few people it seems can do that today.
Same. Imerpius curse seems like a cheat and takes away his character development
Takes away from his character development and the narrative tensions within the Weasleys. If he was under the curse it would ruin the narrative at the end with Fred. I don't think J thinks about narrative and character development when he makes videos in favor of wanting to explain anything that doesn't make sense to him.
I agree that percys arc is important but I still think they did great research
Agreed. I see the merit for the theory, but yeah, I think the only spell he was under was the spell of the allure of money and power. As a guy from a poor and underappreciated family, he saw a way to success and respect (which he got none of at home).
Ya i can see that
I know this is an older video, but i do want to address something.
