    Great video, I followed the steps (1:mouthfill with air, 2:closing the epligotis, and 3:using the tongue as a piston to compress the air back and upwards to pop the ears) and it worked pretty well. Rolling the jaw and lowering it a few times followed by a few Valsavas makes it easier for me by providing flexibility and loosening up the Eustachian Tubes before I do the Frenzel. I'll continue to practice the technique frequenly. Thanks again for sharing.

    This is great, I'm going to copy a link to this video into the video I'm uploading to TH-cam tomorrow. It's about "equalizing" to dive to the bottom of the deep end. It's certainly not as advance as your description but it's also intended for kids. Anyway thanks,

    That's a fairly good explanation for two different things - the Mouthfill and the Frenzel. IMPORTANT NOTE re Mouthfill: The safe way of moving air up into the mouth is by sucking it up by a "Reverse Pack" - the belly needs to be absolutely relaxed! Trying to "push up" air with your belly will lead to severe injuries, even at shallow depths. Here is one way how yo can exercise that: Fully exhale, then sit erect, pinch your nose and bulge your cheeks to suck up air from your already deflated lungs. There you go, this works only if your belly is absolutely soft. Thanks for the good work. Oli Christen, AIDA Master Instructor.

    This was exactly what I needed to hear. I recently learned the frenzel technique from a molchanov short. i had it confused with handsfree. when i saw alexei pinch his nose and building pressure in his nostrils. my mind was blown. when i tried to copy it and it worked building pressure even better than valsalva my mind was super blown!!! but what you said was what i needed to hear; that between 20 and 30 meters valsalva becomes very difficult which is what i've been experiencing for quite some time, thinking there was perhaps something wrong with me. I could tell right away from the ease at which i could produce copious amounts of ear pressure that this was going to be a huge game changer now! and yeah, i've had some issues telling if i was doing it correctly in the water or if my usual insticts for valsalva were kicking in, but as you've said at the end, a way i can test it is to try and do it on vacuum. neat idea. still the coolest og freediving content creator on yt.

    the troubleshooting tips, empty lungs and then try is a great one to know. its so hard to know if im doing it without this check. im still doing valsalva, but working on the frenzel but its a conscious choice that is hard without experience. so the simple step by step is usefull but the trouble shooting was the best!

    This method comes straight from my freediving course material, and this is not listed as a step. However I 100% agree with your comment that it could be the divers problem.I'm trying this again following all the steps in the video. And I seem to be able to succeed without an extra step of consciously having the open the epiglottis, as my epiglottis remains consistently open, for me I have to consciously close it.However There room for improvement in the video, and thanks for pointing that out.

    hahaha its great finding out there is a next technique, me and my mates started diving this really deep and clear sinkhole, up till then i was using valsalva because i hadn't really needed anything else. we were diving a shallower pond where i would reach the bottom and waste some time down there, about 10 metres deep. But at this new spot Instead of wasting time I just kept going deeper, I started really feeling the squeeze and stopped being able to equalize. Now i know what to do haha :)

  • @freediverhd
    @freediverhd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends how good your BTV is. If it fails at a certain depth, then the frenzel method can continue take you down deeper. To be honest, ive never done this BVT method, but from what ive head, some people have success with it in the shallower depths, but find it stops working at a certain depth.. a good frenzel mouth-full will take you down reaaaalllllyyy deep

    This is really frustrating for me, I can't tell if I am doing it or not. When I blow out all of my air and even reverse pack a few times I can still equalize the way I usually do which is blowing a little air out while pinching your nose. I'm not sure if I've been accidently doing the frenzel this entire time but I can equalize perfectly with absolutely no air in my lungs using the normal way

    • @blackbombchu
      @blackbombchu 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just noticed that even if my lungs are full of air, it's still easier to do the frenzel than to push air from my lungs into my ears because my cheeks are stronger at compressing air than my lungs. I think I may have been doing the frenzel instinctively all along but not while diving which a hardly ever do and I do it with my cheeks, not my tongue. If most people are the same as me, then maybe this video is totally useless for everyone but those few unusual people who don't do the frenzel instinctively like the probably the uploader of this video.

    +Freediver HD, so as I am diving down, I need to equalize, is there also some sort of de-equalizing as I swim up? Or can I swim up after I equalized at let´s say 10m? thanks :)

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, swim straight up. Air needs to be forced into your ears through equalization on the way down. However on the way up, the air expands and comes out of ur ears naturally, so there is no such thing as de-equalize.

    Could you do a video close up of the throat action while performing Frenzel? I think that's the hardest part of frenzel. We know the tongue is the piston. We just don't know what to use as the crankshaft and rod to push the piston upward.

    This may be a dumb question, but is it a good idea to remove wax from your ears before a dive? I also think I have a hard time equalizing because as soon as I feel that my ears are full of air I get an urge to swallow. I think that causes air to escape but it usually happens when I'm practicing out of the water. Do you get the same urge on a dive?

    Something that was weird was that I already knew how to do it without even freediving having started freediving yet. I would just do it randomly. The funny thing was that for a couple of weeks I was thinking that i wasn't doing it right but when I came across a video that used a partial close of the nose and then started doing it I could hear that familiar noise of air going in and out of the nose and from then on I knew that I had already mastered it. My tip to u is don't worry about closing off ur throat just relax and try to breathe through Ur nose without actually involving Ur lungs, hope this helped :D

    • @suzakico
      @suzakico 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RIGHT! -- "just relax and try to breathe through Ur nose without actually involving Ur lungs" I think this correspond to ~2'27 in the video --- sort of country intuitive - not work hard, but relax. (If we can raise Adam's apple up and down at ease while sealing the air from the lung, I feel like that will do the trick - like effortless effort) THANKS - and quite interesting to learn a new trick!

    Even if you dive to only 20 meters, the Frenzel will make your dives a LOT more enjoyable, at least that's my experiences. A way how learning the Frenzel, is first to learn the theorics and then do like this : 1 full inhale, try 5 times to equalize, then full exhale, try 5 times to exhalize, and then repeat for like 10 min. The first minutes you will be struggling hard but at the end you will be mastering the method

    How many times do you have to equalise when descending to about 10-15 metres from surface?

  • @johnnyk7132
    @johnnyk7132 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello. When you dive to a depth lets say 10 - 15 meters it is important to go up to the surface slowly, or you can go up as fast as you want?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +johnny k Freediving you can assend as fast as you want. Scuba diving you need to slow your assent. The reason has to do with Scuba divers breathing compressed air at depth, while freedivers do not, so they avoid the risk.

    @freediverhd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey There Tyler. It's a common problem. please check out my video on "Vasalva" equalization first - you can find it by looking through my channels list of videos. They method is much better suited for people who cannot equalize at all. Frenzel is only something that is needed for more advanced divers. And once your vasalva is good, the frenzel is an easy step.

  • @abdullahddiver
    @abdullahddiver 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I developed a technique of equalization through trial and error. I 'close my throat' and do as though I'm forcing to swallow but I don't have to squeeze my nose. I found it to be more efficient than the valsalva. I've never gotten the chance to use this technique below 12m(crappy scuba fins) so I can't say if it could be done at depths greater than 20m. I'll be getting my gara professionals soon so I will soon find out

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need some air in your mouth for the Frenzel, but "cheeks full" would be quite impossible for a freediver to acheive deep down. I would say "cheeks full" is nonsense.

    Did you mean closing the epiglottis, the exact same thing we close when swallowing. I'm confused why it's even possible to consciously control yourself to close it when you're not swallowing if it's not possible to consciously control yourself to not close it when you are swallowing.

    u see the soft palate is a muscle situated on the back top of ur mouths, this muscle controls the flow of air to your nose and Eustachian tubes. try rotating an exhale from mouth to nose and u will feel it moving.this muscle is coupled with the epiglottis,meaning once the epiglottis is closed so is the soft palate,meaning u cant push the air from ur mouth to your ears to equalize.do a search for frenzel fattah for the steps to control and uncouple the soft palate.cant post link for some reason.

    like I stated in the previous comment do a search for Frenzel Fattah to learn the various exercises u need to perform, I don't see why being a singer should prevent u from controlling those muscles if anything it should be easier for u. the best way to test if u can frenzel, inflate a balloon place in mouth, and concentrate on letting the air escape through your nose.

    I haven't gone deeper than about 35 feet (11 meters), so I don't know if my usually equalization method would work at deeper ranges or not, but it works for high altitude (aircraft, elevators, etc). It's a method that I taught myself in swimming class, & I don't know if it has a name. It's like a stifled yawn, in which I use jaw muscles to pull my ear canals open while keeping my mouth closed. I never hold my nose to equalize my ears.

    Hi, Dean. I'm struggling to learn this technique. I can feel my ears full of air when I do this, I also can hear like a squueze sound in my ears. Is that mean my frenzel work? But I havent test it under water yet. I only practice in dry land for now. And one more question, lets say I manage to equalise with this method under water, should I trap the air in my mouth that I used when do the mouth-fill? Or should I return it back to lung? Because when I try to return the air back to the lung, my ears feels like unequalize anymore. Hope you can understand my stupid question. Sorry for that bad english.

      what ever air you have in your month - keep is in your mouth.. if you need go deeper and equalize again you will need it. The air should be kept behind your teeth, not in your cheeks.

      riko sp same process, its all about getting the tubs in your ears warmed up - using a rope, and going down pulling down the line. I just used the frenzel to demonstrate using the rope.

    When you try using your tongue as a piston, does the front of your tongue remain touching the roof of your mouth?

    Valsalva never works. It failed me totally. I had really hard time doing free immersion as I felt short on breath very quickly one after one valsalva. I'm practicing Frenzel now, it's a bit confusing but I need it anyway.

      then you are on the right way - for freediving, there is no reason to do Valsalva!

    i am hoping you can help me....i don't have any problem equalizing my ears but there are times i get back to the surface and i notice blood in my mask and some weird pain from around my eyes. have you ever experienced blood in your mask or pain around your eyes while diving?

    • @kimujin6
      @kimujin6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      same for me.
      my instructor says its quite common for who has weak sinus and you need to take a full rest for a few days to recover it. otherwise it will keep hurting you. and you need to keep the best condition before free diving .

    • @robjjc
      @robjjc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ronnie wilson HI Ronnie, I believe this is actually failure to equalise your mask as you go deeper. What happens is the pressure causes a vacuum in the mask which bursts blood vessels in the eyes/sinues and causes the event you experienced. From a scuba perspective this is easily solved by using your air supply to breathe out and equalise the mask but harder with freediving. Maybe try using tiny amounts of air in your nose to qualise the mask

    how can a noseclip help with equalization

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All a nose clip does is permanently close your nose. This means you don't need need to use your hand to pinch your nose closed. However using a nose clips means you cant use a normal diving mask, you need to use it in conjunction with 'fluid googles' if you wanna see well underwater - and those things suck for regular diving, cause you have water permanently in your eyes - competition and serious training time only.

    Hey, great vids still! I am so close to getting a GoPro as I told you a while ago. I have used valsalva all of the time I have been diving and can easily do 75 feet on an average day. Hopefully this will take me deeper and most importantly, longer! Also I received my Cressi Tecnica in 3.5mm. I will post a vid. Maybe you can check it out!

    Not sure I'm doing it right. I don't think I'm using my tongue at all. I am moving muscles in my neck. But I can do it with my lungs empty. I'll count it as a success. Thanks. I'll use the technique tomorrow on my spear fishing trip.

    • @YF-23A

      When the divers dive in the water, their diving masks act as nose pinchers because no air gets in the mask.

    • @pressdesign
      @pressdesign 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a total bullshit, sorry. You need to pinch your nose even in the mask. Othervise you blow out the air through the mask.

    • @YF-23A
      @YF-23A 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No need to be hostile, the diving mask covers the eyes and nose only, not the whole head.

    • @pressdesign
      @pressdesign 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But, please... Read my first comment. I am a diver. A scuba diver and a freediver too.
      You need to pinch your nose with your hand for equalise your ears (you not need to pinch your nose, when you need to equalise the mask - mostly in freediving). Thats why the diver mask have a smooth silicone nose cover.
      But... Mi first comment is about a totally other thing. The video above is about Frenzel technique of equalisation and there is a technical version doing it handsfree, but it happens internally in the head/mouth/nose - this have nothing to do with the mask.

      Tomas Pressel - Freediving
      VTO is something you can't learn, I am sure it's by instinct. Rarely divers learn it and if it worked, I heard it need years of practice. So no worries 1% can do VTO in the world by luck, their tubes are already very wide and manage to click their ear drums voluntarily to equalise

  • @nubz0r
