How to Hold your Breath Longer: Static Breath Hold

  • Hold your breath longer. freedive deeper. Have longer dive times. It all begins with static breath hold. Learning how to hold your breath longer has so many applications and will improve your freediving. In this video I talk about static breath hold training, how to begin training and all the applications that longer breath holds will have in freediving.
    Learning how to hold your breath longer is one of the absolute foundations of freediving training. Once you're comfortable with longer static holds you will quickly find yourself growing more comfortable when you dive and especially when you spend more dive at the bottom.
    Holding your breath longer is a process of getting used to the sensation of long breath holds. High carbon dioxide, contractions of the respiratory muscles and hypoxia. These sensations aren't comfortable at first and so the best way to train is to go slow, don't push yourself and allow yourself to grow accustomed to breath holds gradually.

      Dont worry its not that hard, or you could just ask a follower to do it for you (pretty sure people would be ok with that). You just share the content with the developper and he does the app. Then he can give it to you to send to the store.

    Hi Adam and everyone in the free-diving family. Thank you all for your inspiration. I'm a 64yo and want to still be doing this when I'm an 84yo. I need more motivation as I'm not consistent (off and on like a faulty light switch lol). I'm not sure if I did the exercise correctly. Intervals between breath-holds were 1 min approx. Looking forward to any constructive criticism. I've only been in the water Mar'18 (NZ hols) and haven't been diligent with any regular exercise regime. Looking forward to your reply. And....I'm so glad that I found your vids, love them to bits. Cheers

    Your videos are very informative and you speak very clearly. After discovering your videos I went from 3 minutes 45 seconds to 5 minutes holding my breath in a matter of a couple days.     Love your videos, I use to practice holding my breath as a kid in my grandparents pool. I use to snorkel at the beach. Now I am older and interested in getting back into the water freediving and spearfishing. Thanks for sharing your experience

    I am wanting to get into diving, I am a mountain runner so I have pretty good cardio but my breath hold is not great considering my fitness. What you said about the human body is absolutely true!

    Hi., i used to spearfishing before and i can only hold my breath for only 20-40s under water, but when i'd try the technique that you said.,
    In 1st try 1:43s
    2nd try 1:45s
    3rd try 1:50s only.
    I will also try this to catch more fish here in the Philippines.,

    Thanks for the great tips and entertainment. You are fun to watch. I have really slacked off on my breath holding and had to dive to retrieve our laptop which I hope the gods liked. But the panic of losing all our footage and diving under docks made it really hard to stay calm and search. While the laptop is in a rice bath I figure now would be a good time to improve my breath hold and focus underwater.

    Wow, this really works! I just started practicing yesterday, and I was just doing the static breath holds, and I got 45 seconds, 1:25 and now I need to do 3 more lol, but they really do work, and it makes me feel extremely relaxed.

    Hi adam, your videos & tutorials are really encouraging me to practice a lot. I find it hard as an asthmatic to hold my breath some days, but with your tips ive improved a lot. It turns out i can hold my breath longer than all my friends (who aren't asthmatics) which i find really funny. Keep the great videos coming :)

      Exhale breath walks i think have helped me. Exhale 15 steps then 3 big breaths and on the exhale hold and do another 15 steps. Been doing that a few weeks and just did 8 rounds and can hold breath heaps longer.

    Wow, I really impressed myself this time. Adam, I saw your videos weeks ago, and got me motivated to improve my breath holds. I found your videos really interesting and entertaining as well, good job! I have been practicing in the last 2 weeks the CO2 tables incresing from 1 minute hold to 1:30 and 1:45 two times. Also, I followed your advice and signed up for a freediving course last weekend and it was fantastic....I dove down 20 meters for the first time in my life! and now for the first time I could hold my breath for more than 5 minutes! even though last week couldn't hold my breath for more than 2:30 minutes......but I am understanding why, now. Thanks again and keep doing the good job!

      Thanks Adam! Today I got a new PB of 5:17! and getting into the groove. Relaxing is key....for the first time in my life I am realizing this. Also, I would like to ask your opinion about this: after I did my 5:06, and after my 5:17 today, both times my left hamstring started to cramp a little (even when I was relaxed). It is kinda weird, since I didn't move my body at all, always laying on my bed. Any thoughts about why this could be happening?

    After doing that exercise I was able to get to 2 minutes without feeling contractions. My max static breath hold time has been 3 minutes, but I struggle through it. I usually get contractions between 1:15-1:30 and just push myself. I really like the perspective of just working your way up and staying within your comfort zone. I also really benefited from your video on the Frenzel technique! Thank you!!!

      Adam Freediver I am definitely one of those people that jump to immediate panic as soon as my contractions come on. I wish I could have taken my first course with someone as patient as you- I feel like my instructor lost all respect for me when I wasn’t able to hold my breath for 3 minutes on the first day. It broke my confidence but I’m working on the basics on my own and hoping to get back out there soon to retest for certification. Thanks for the videos! They are so helpful.

    I’ve tried a static breath hold in the past and only managed 30 seconds but after watching your breathe up and final breath videos this was the result! Only problem is that I keep stopping my hold before I feel any contractions. I can’t seem to hold it long enough and on the last one I felt nauseous. But I’m super excited to keep practicing 😊

    very good like always! I'm a spearfishermen, i can tell that at the begging i had strong contractions...now I do not feel them so strong anymore, and the freediving is easier! :D and I noticed that deeper is the dive I am more relax and the breathold is longer, my deepest dive is 15 m :(

    Hey fellow freedivers of the world, question for ya. I have trouble equalizing on occasion and often have to push air into my drums and swallow in order to get a pop on the way down. Sometimes only in one ear thus compromising my dive. Anyone else have their own magic way to do it because that’s all I got so far and I can’t get past about 30-40 feet before I am unable to equalize. Also Adam you have taught me a lot about breathing in the 45 minutes I’ve spent on your channel. I didn’t think I could get past 1:30 but after listening to you I held for 2:45 on my first hold and I’m blown away.

      I’m brand new to free diving… but I’ve learned to hold nose and pop BEFORE it hurts. Popping 4 times just to get to 20fow. Also equalizing my mask with very small breathe out threw my nose 2-3x. I could be way off but this helps me…

    I love your wisdom. i am starting to get quite serious about my attempts at freediving. any ideas for freediving in the northern climates? i am quite landlocked and unable to afford to fly to warm places like Florida or Bali...keep up the great videos.. :)

      Thanks so much Richard :) well to be dead honest I really don't know that much about that part of the world. My worldly knowledge is limited to places with warm tropical water. I'm sure you'll be able to find some opportunities with local facebook groups etc? :)

    Hello yedi master! You mentioned on the commentary for wch that you got an inflammation when you started with breath holds, I think I got it after a few weeks of training (only every third day)
    but I don't feel like I have stressed it out so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
    1. 1:30 2. 1.45 3. 1:54 is my "best" but now I can't relax because of pain and so on so I guess I need to pause. Thank you so much for all the amazing videos, you are great!

    I do CO2 table training from time to time. My contractions start around 1,45-2,00 minutes. After the contractions, it become very difficult for me to continue holding my breath. I wonder when does this mammalian dive reflex is kicking in and extend my holding time further.
    My target is 4.00-5.00 minutes best time. What would you recommend for me. Thanks again...

    I started a Freediving course two months ago, age 44. Never ever did any kind of diving before. Hardly some swimming lessons. Anyway, during the first static breath hold attempt of my life I did 4:40. Last week I did my second attempt. A surprising 5:03. Which is strange considering I totally suck at dynamic, haha (I mean, sometimes it's hard to do a simple 25m in swimming pool)! I never felt any contractions, more like a strong tension in my lung/throat area. I thought static was just a mental thing and that all you could do physically was expand your lung capacity. Didn't know about the getting your body used to CO2. I'll try these exercises. Thanks!

    Hi Adam ! I have two questions about these table :
    Should i, at any point in my progress, change the breathing period or should it always be the same (descending from 1:30 to 30 sec? And for 02 tables, do you recommend the same system (starting at 50% of max breath hold and holding 10 secs more)?

    Performed during my freediving course, dry statics.
    Last one was not comfortable, I pushed hard but was really surprised at the result as my previous PB was 3:30. Proper relaxation and stretching helps.

      definitely helps but try not to push with breath holds....you'll find that you can do huge breath holds without pushing and it leads to even bigger breath holds in the future.....but in saying that....dude! nice work!

    I'm still a newbie at Freediving, how do you get to stay at the bottom for a long time? How do you even descend so easily and comfortably without taking so much effort? You're as informative as ever Adam!

      freedivers often use weights when diving in depths which makes them float up less and gives easier descends

    Adam mate, I'm so confused.. There's so many videos from you related to breath holds, that I don't know based on which video to train. I loved 4 min static table; I also trained with this video. However, I'm still confused on the warm ups and which table to use after specific warm up. So far I've trained CO2 and this is very easy (comfortable?) for me, I have no problem training it. I would love to have a training session video from you, where you go straight on the point with warm up times then what table to use, when training either CO2 or O2. I like to train 2 times a week, but I still don't understand how to practice O2, so that kind of video would really help.

      Hey buddy :) the issue with this topic is that training your body for breath holding is not simple and you can't just train C02 or train 02 in such a simple way. Each table to good for different things. Sometimes warm ups are good. Sometimes they aren't good. The best all round table that exists is the 4 minute table that I describe. The tables in this video are just different examples of training that you can do

    My pb static is 3:45, but I find it more/less difficult depending on the day/hr... i appreciate being told to not push too hard and let my body adjust and improve in its own time. I have a habit of turning up the intensity too fast and burning out fast esp w/ athletic pursuits. I dont want that for my freediving! Thanks!
