  • A step by step tutorial on Frenzel Equalisation. Being able to Frenzel equalise is essential for freedivers. Other equalisation techniques have significant limits and disadvantages. This video takes you through, in great detail, the movements and coordination required to perform a strong Frenzel.

Most professional FREEdivers are becoming more and more "comercial divers" and they don't really like to reveal tips and tricks unless it's a paid course. Don't know if you read comments on a 2-year-old video, but in case you do, Thank You! After reading one book, taking a freediving course, reading numerous articles, and watching several TH-cam videos I was still struggling to Frenzel. Wow, so thankful for this video! I've been working through a freediving Zero to Hero program with the goal of being an instructor, and this has been incredibly helpful! I spent an entire season working as a divemaster, and there is a stark difference between equalizing as a scuba diver vs. equalizing as a freediver. I've also been vlogging about my experiences in working through the challenges and successes of becoming a more skilled freediver, and your vlog provides me a lot of inspiration. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial Adam! 🙏🏽 Although I still need to practice, because I just got into freediving, realizing I was trying to push the air from my lungs to equalize, what did work out in most cases up to a depth of 5m.
    But every time I tried to go deeper (than 5m) it turns out impossible for me to equalize, and the pain made me to ascend again.
    So I hope practicing with this tutorial will do the trick 👍🏽

I've been snorkeling for years and never been able to dive more than a couple metres. Hey Adam! Awesome video and really helpful. I did learn how to Frenzel equalize while watching it. I did that while sitting upright. Now, I tried it upside down, but I felt that either I dont get the same equalization level as when upright, or feel no "push" pressure at all on my mid ear. How do I improve that when upside down? Is there something I could possibly be doing wrong if it's working while upright but not when upside down?

    Hi Adam, I have learned a lot by watching your videos during my journey, from zero to becoming a freedive instructor.
    I have a student who are not able to frensel, she turns around every time to push up air from her abdominal to equalize. On our SSI level 1 course in Crete last week, I tried to work with her, and her equalization technique. 'Glottis' exercises, EQ tool exercises, and with the two exercises you mentioned. She has been on a Padi level 1 course before in indonesia. So ofcourse its frustrating for her, that she's not able to make it work, on her second Level 1 course. I tried to calm her, and to make her have patience during our course.
    On the last days session in our freediving week, I just wanted her to have fun, and use her old technique, and she did all the SSI Level 1 exercises on the line. On her last dive she went down to 24 meters, which means she is very confident in the water, and have a strong breath hold. But its like she tenses up in all her muschles when trying to frenzel correctly, from all the tension built up by frustration, of not being able to frenzel properly. From the baloon exercises, it seems like, she is able to controll her soft palate and her glottis. But she is not able to push up air with her tongue on land.
    Do you have some other exercises, for training movement of the tongue?
    I really dont want her to give op on freediving. Im planning to make a dry training program for her, so she hopefully will become a happy freediver:-)

    Well done, You've just created the best video tutorial there is on frenzel. I especially like how you mentioned the different tongue positions. My problem is that by the time I get to 20m I feel like there's a vacuum in my mouth and nothing left to eq with. Do you think a change in tongue position will help this? (I use the T position) Or do I just need more air in the lungs to compensate for pressure? Thanks for making this Adam!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Domhnallus thanks mate!!! The issue could be that you're trying to pull up too much air. When you're deeper a T or K Frenzel will be hard because of the air you have to bring up for it so getting more familiar with the H position could sort that out because you don't need to pull up so much air to do it

    I've got a lot of these things down (as best I can tell), but I really struggle to get it right in the water. It works sometimes, but not always. I'm not sure if it's because I'm rushing it in the moment, or if I'm doing something wrong. Either way, I'm heading to Cairns on Friday to try and do some dives, hopefully it works!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can think of 3 things off the top of my head:
      1: like you said, you're rushing it
      2: you're becoming tense in your mouth and throat and this is causing you to close your soft palate and block off the opening into your nasal cavity
      3: you're letting too much pressure build up in your ears before you equalise

    Amazing video! One quick question. If I can equalise with my air out my lungs, am I 100% frenzel? Adam, you are the man. Despite not feeling like my diaphragm was contracting with my hand against it, I've always been unsure that I was doing the Frenzel correctly. It always seemed like I was still blowing air. Attempting the Frenzel after exhaling completely was the key. It was such a simple suggestion, but it had totally escaped me until watching your video. It's hard to say for sure without being there but it could just be the sound of you equalising. If you had a perforated ear drum it would be quite painful

    Hi Adam, I want to thank you for this video. It is very explanatory. This type of knowledge requires real learning. Being a youtuber is very easy, but not teaching. I encourage you to continue with this detailed method, especially for your South American fans, since we don't have much material in our language. Thank you and congratulations!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly because you have water in your nasal cavity and then you push it into your ear :)

    I watched this video months ago and "learnt" how to do the frenzel then, but I've always had issues such as my mouth filling up with air whenever I equalise and having to squeeze my cheeks in to get the air into my nasal cavity. However, I decided to watch this video again while trying to learn how to equalise head down and I finally managed to get a proper frenzel this time. Thank you so much, Adam!!!

    Wow. Huge thank you. In short order I could hear it in my ears with just a little practice. I've ALWAYS had trouble equalizing pressure when diving. So much so that I wouldn't even dive with others because it took so long to equalize the pressure. I'm really looking forward to trying this out.

I've always thought that i was having a hard time learning Frenzel or doing something wrong. To my surprise i was actually doing it right naturally all along. Thank you for clearing this up. Best tutorial ever thank you

I woke up this morning with a double surprise: tongue push works perfectly, and I can Frenzel without any effort ! Thank you so much for the great videos and tips Adam. After a failed equalization attempt in my first scuba dive I always thought I cant equalize and stopped diving all together. After practicing dry equalization for a week I got in to the sea, equalize at the surface and managed to dive 5 m. I equalized often and didnt feel and pressure on my ears . I was so excited when I looked up and see how far I managed. Next step will be signing into a free diving course to practice it further

      Yeay. Will wait for your vids. I have a question though, I have problems equalizing my other ear. It doesn't seem to "pop" at the same time with my right ear. Do you have a technique so I can equalize both at the same time? I'm a noobie. 😭

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not such a problem that they dont equalise at the same time. What this means is that one of your tubes is more flexible than the other. The other one will gain flexibility as time goes on. You're doing everything right! you just need to dive more and practice more :)

    Adam, thank you. I used to use Valsalva equalisation when scuba diving until I burst a capillary and then forced blood back into my middle ear and against my ear drum. Dive over. I've since watched all your videos related to equalisation and have found Frensel come fairly naturally now and is much kinder. My diving, snorkelling etc has improved and I am calmer when descending now. Thank you once again :-)
