  • A full re-fret on a lacquered fender board.
Its not my favorite task when fender lacquer in and over the frets.
Getting the frets out is a challenge and leads to significant damage to the finish. Large ridges of remnant hardened lacquer on the board prevent new frets from ever seating correctly.
From a repair and maintenance perspective, Rose wood or any unfinished fingerboard is much preferred.
In reality the process took many hours. It should be noted that I have skipped showing several stages ,and no I could not tap them out laterally as the frets were so thin they bent upwards and I risked even more damage to the fingerboard.
The fingerboard edges were slightly rounded to make playing more comfortable. The fret ends were profiled and rounded to remove any sharp edges left by the file and chamfer stage. The voids left under the fret tangs at the board edges were also filled.
Before the final burnish and polish of the frets a precision ground straight steel block with 2000 grain abrasive was run over the fret tops to ensure that no discrepancies in co-planar height was possible. This also ensures any remaining striation marks from the leveling stage are removed.
