I had an XFR 2011 but facelift. Unfortunately the timing chain failed and the engine needed a full rebuild, apparently the chain was revised in the 2013 model onwards and this was a rare issue. I really loved the car too. I bought an M4 after this but the Jag was more enjoyable to drive - supercharging is the way
My wife has run a 2013 XFR for more than six years, it’s now done 87,000 miles. All it demands is regular maintenance and consumable parts; brakes, tyres etc, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it, and for the AMG, M & RS smashing performance delivered, it’s not even heavy on fuel.

A bit late but awesome XFR really good deal you got there. I know Jaguar hasn't got the best reputation regarding reliability, but the V8's are really solid cars. Most you had to do was normal service, that is never cheap for a performance oriented V8. Don't be scared by the forums, they exist to speak about the problems but it is never as bad as it looks.

So my mind won over my heart and I ended up going with a 2008 XF (3Ltr v6 petrol) Luxury Premium....mainly because it was low(ish) mileage getting it for under 50k miles and all serviced by Jag themselves - 90yr old retiree who owned Jags all his life, so had some money for sure haha...only got rid of it because of lockdown and decided now was as good as any, to give up driving. I kind of expect the cost of owning a Jag would not be the same as say a 30yr old Honda Civic haha, but it’s still good to get a handle of what to expect for certain things. My previous cars have been a 5 series BMW and Mercs, I have long ago accepted that buying such prestige luxury brands is easy, but keeping them running is where the costs pile up. Though mine isn’t an XFR, it does have a nice rumble to it, which I didn’t expect, as well as a decent pick up, with speed piling up much quicker than I expect...maybe sound insulation has come on over the last few decades as I often find I’ve reached a certain speed much faster than I expected hahaha....this big cat will definitely take some getting used to. After watching a few of your previous videos, I’ve ordered those swish cup holder mats, and also a mat from online to cover the entire boot area (don’t want to mess up what is a nice new boot space). Not confident enough to pull door panels apart yet to fix the blue leds to the side panels, but I was wondering whether it was possible to fit ‘angel eyes’ to a 2008 XF? And if so, is it worth it, and is it an easy job? Keep up the great vids....I am thoroughly immersed in your ‘back catalogue’ at the moment. 👍
Congrats on your purchase. The 3.0L has a wonderful burble to it. As for angel eyes, it's too much of a faff to do. Headlights out, bake them in the oven to loosen the sealer, take lenses off, then wire and install the angel eye lights. Your headlights won't be the same again. You could risk warping the lenses or the housing. I'd rather do an LED conversion if you have halogen bulbs. Easy to do and so much brighter at night. 😉

I have a budget which would get me either a 2017, 2 litre diesel turbo R-Sport spec, which would have lower mileage, but not all the creature comforts and features, or an 'S', which would be a year older, higher mileage, but would have a 3 litre, V6 twin turbo engine, and be fully loaded. What do you think? I am torn.
@@mrek2068 Errol, my advice with these type of choices us always go with the fully loaded one. You will kick yourself later for not doing it. I get so many messages from guys who bought a lower spec and then ask me how to ad lane keep assist or blindspot monitoring or cameras or heated seats afterwards. I even had a guy ask how to add parking sensors in the front. It's difficult, nigh impossible to add these canbus features if it wasn't built with them. So get them while you have the chance and have no regrets afterwards. In addition, that V6 is a little beast. You'd be crazy to turn that down. But if fuel economy is the biggest concern and you do a lot of miles, then a diesel is sensible. Personally, the V6 would be my choice. But only you know your needs and ultimately you will have to make the difficult choice my friend 😉. Good luck. And let me know which one you took 😜

@@carfanfan Just test drove the F-Pace 'S', followed by the R-Sport, and it's an easy decision - the S all the way. Far superior with the more powerful engine, and added luxury. The R-Sport felt weedy.

Love this car, except the mudflaps (the ruin the aesthetics of any vehicle imo, but thats just me) I currently have a Lincoln LS which is typical Jag powertrain, now that ive learned the car so well and appreciate the engineering of the Jag engines and overall controls I want another one, and the XFR is topping that list. Do you have any acceleration videos of 0-100 or 0-150+? would love to see that! and to hear that engine to what its made to do.
I plan to do a review video of the car in a month or so. I'm trying book a track with a straight long enough for me to get it to top speed. I might have to find an a small airport that will allow me to do that though. But I plan 0-100 kmh and 0-200 kmh and then top speed. 😉

I love my XF from 2008 . its a 4.2 supercharged sv8. I do al Repairs by myself . so brake pads + disk cost me in total just 500 euro. oil + filter cost me 60 euro,s spark plugs 120 euro.s

Thanks Chris. I took a look at Spires but shipping to get it here cost more than the exhaust 🤣. So I will most likely get Powerflow to help me with that. As long as I don't have a drone in the car at highway speeds. My car's RPM idles at around 2,500rpm when doing 140 km/h so droning shouldn't be an issue though. 😜
Hi Hilton. I just bought the bargain of the decade, a 2013 8 speed spotless XFR with 80k km for R 290 000. I know the person and he's VERY kind. Just took it to PowerFlow Bellville and it now literally sounds like the F-Type, the XFR is one incredible amazing car!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Nick! Awesome. I don't know any place in Pretoria who can do my exhaust for me. They all quoted me R40k to do the exhaust. Did you just do a rear muffler delete? Or did they put a semi free flow? by deleting the middle boxes?
@@carfanfan No a full system is really not necessary (1 of the many advantages of the XFR). They only replaced the rear mufflers with a very very small box so that it's a little bit quieter and easier to live with than straight pipe. It only cost R 5000. I will try to tag you on the Jag Facebook group when I post a exhaust vid.
@@Rickbearcat That's a good price Rick. Low mileage too. Mine is one year newer and has 50,000km on the clock, around 35,000 miles. And it still drives like new. So I'm sure that one would too.
Hey Hilton, Please give me your thoughts on the following: just found a 2015 XF Sport with 57K on the clock. In caviar metallic and ivory interior. Just what I was looking for. Price $18,000 US dollars. A steal right. One thing. It sat at a dealership for 19 months. Driven ONLY 15 miles over that 19 months (from 8/2015 to 3/2018). It had 2 owners after that. At 51K miles with the last owner the water pump gasket, intake manifold gasket, and the oil cooler seals were replaced. It now has 57K miles. I’m going to check it out and test drive it but I’m thinking this car is a maintenance bomb waiting to go off. A jag can’t just sit for 19 months and not be driven. Probably why 36K miles after it sat that long it’s having seal and gasket problems. Do you agree? The fuel lines, hoses and belts are probably shot. Needless to say the rubber gaskets and seals in the engine and brake lines. Let me know what you think. Thanks Hilton! Cheers! Matthew C. Napa, CA PS. Gratulations: What a bargain. Currently the cheapest XFR 510PS from 2012, 70.000 km from private will cost, without negotiation, 22.000 € here in Germany. If you want something from a dealer, it will be an older model with way more km on it. Or you have to double or even triple the price. Amazing how cheap you got your car. Keep it, love it. The most expenses won´t come back so soon. And as allways. If you buy a car, keep around 5000 € in you back hand to cover unexpected repairs. At least if it is a Jag, BMW oder Mercedes. :) So yes, that´s eye watering. But it is for a really good cause.
Random Question Hilton , would you ever consider going over to the Dark side and getting a Range Rover maybe a Sport or a FFRR or a Discovery ? I really fancied same model as your current XFR . In the end I went with an end of run fully loaded L320 Luxury RRSport . Which I totally love . I have never regretted it . 12mnths later I still get that initial thrill from it . I love the brand as a whole . This car is my first foray into JLR . It will definitely not be the last . I very nearly XF'd but the driving experience of a family members RRSport sealed the deal . Yes I would. I love the RR Sport. Gorgeous to look at and man that plush ride. Our roads are getting worse so my next car would probably be an Evoque or RR Sport. 😉
Beautiful styling, nice handling, low reliability. (Hey, no surprise because it's a TATA product, like Land Rover/Range Rover.) I'm still in my 2019 MAZDA CX-5 GT Reserve 2.5 L. turbo, AWD. A K&N drop-in air filter, a new, stiffer Cork Sport turbo downpipe and a CS oil catch can are all the performance upgrades I'll do. The Cork Sport down pipe definitely gave me better throttle response from take off and at lower speeds. As I told you before, using 1/4 tank of 100 octane gas and 3/4 tank 91 octane "premium" gas I get MUSH improved acceleration. Later I will put some wider 235 Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on it late in 2022. As per your CX-5 videos on trim upgrades to this car I was very pleased with the good quality of the Ali Express-sourced Chinese parts.
Hey Eric. Yeah, most of the accessories are very good quality. Just be sure to read the description on chrome moldings though, some are metal and some are plastic. Don't waste your time on plastic as they arrive broken. The only other thing I didn't like was the poor design of their wood trim for behind the arm rest for rear passengers. It doesn't fit - so huge waste of time and money on that. They aren't cheap either. I really enjoyed my CX-5 and in the year I owned it, not one thing went wrong. Very reliable. Mine was not turbo, so under powered for where we moved to, otherwise I'd still have it if we lived on the coast.
Sounds like a bargain bud how ever you look at it , and what a beautiful car you have. Mines a 2008 in for paint and wheels sorted and a Jaguar rear lip spoiler fitted in the metallic British racing green to match the car body colour May 10 th at a cost of £1800 I can’t wait to see her 100 percent again the old girl is worth every penny 👌👍
An interesting update Hilton. Great to get all the major work is done. The next 12 months should be much less expensive. So far my modest Tucson 1.6 has proved cheap to run, although the mileage for the past year has been pitifully low (due to lockdowns which will end soon). The second annual service at a dealer cost £250, about 5000 rand / $350. The next service is due in September. I too have been intermittently buying premium fuel, as I was advised that all cars benefit over the longer term. Happy motoring in the XFR :-)
Thanks Andy. Yep, your Tucson service is about what a standard service costs for my XFR. The Tucson is much more financially economical to run though. Overall service costs are low in them and they are great reliable SUVs. I mentioned before I was thinking if buying one but bought the Mazda instead. But I wished afterwards I'd gotten the Tucson. Mostly because it had better spec and tech. Especially Android Auto. Have an aw6 weekend. 😉

Hi Hilton, Do you know if the facelifts have electric steering, rather than hydraulic? I was given a facelift courtesy car, and the steering is way lighting than on my original XF. This is welcome but it doesn't seem as planted as the steering on my original XF. In other words, it wanders a bit on straights. Thanks,
Great video thank you! I'm also in Johannesburg and currently researching the XFR to buy as a second car mainly for my wife to use. She does less than 10 000 km a year, so a 100k km vehicle wouldn't be a huge issue. I must say cost of maintenance is quite high, but if you want to drive one of these I guess it comes with the territory. You never mentioned how much it cost to change the rear shock absorbers, or whether if it was done - unless I missed that somehow in this or a previous video. Have you ever researched or thought of taking the car to an independent Jaguar specialist? I find that indies in general do exceptional work, and are also quite a bit cheaper when it comes to service. Of course the discount you received from Jaguar would keep you with them, but I was just wondering. Thanks for all the detail in explaining the expenses.
Hey Sigurd - the XFR is an excellent choice. If I'd bought one that had all its major services, it wouldn't actually have cost that much in maintenance. I'm surprised by this car's reliability - no leaks of any sort. I would have expected water pump failure by now, but it just keeps going. As for the shocks, I didn't replace them as Jaguar said there was nothing wrong with them and what I thought was leaks was just sweat coming from the shocks - they are electronic adjustable shocks, so they get harder the faster you drive. At 180kph this car really comes into its own. Everything just smooths out and it cruises quietly along at that speed. The shocks just for info would have cost me R15,000 a piece. So replacing all 4 would come to R60k. I have a mechanical warranty on mine with Hollard which costs R450 per month and covers everything. It's their top of the range warranty so the cost of cover you get for various components is worth having the warranty. Even the supercharger is covered. But to have it, I must service it at a Franchised Jaguar dealer and it must have full service history which I've now gotten up to date. Just a warning, the wheels are big, the tires have a low profile and the smallest pothole will buckle those big wheels. I've repaired mine twice already and about to have them repaired again after hitting a pothole while purchasing some spare wheels to keep for when this happens again. You can only fit 20 inch wheels to it because the front calipers are so big, anything smaller won't fit. Wheels have become the bane of my existence. Other than that, you get a good V8 which is reliable as long as the one you buy has already had it's major 8 year service. If not, negotiate the price down by that cost because you will end up spending that money. I got R100k off the price of mine and I've spent almost that on wheels, brakes, services etc so far. So I'm not really out of pocket as the going price of these cars is around R400k for a 2012 and up model. But I personally wouldn't pay a cent more than R330k for one if it hasn't had the big services. Check the service history, call the dealer where it was serviced and ask for any other issues they reported to the previous owner that needed attention. Also check the warranty history to see if anything major failed during it's 5 year plan. ;)
Have a question since you've had so many Jags. How much difference is the Bowers and Wilkins 1200 watt system vs the Meridian 380 watt or 825 watt surround sound system? Thinking of trading in my 2012 XF for a 2016 F Pace S. But damn do I love my sound system in the XF.
Unless you okay your music at too volume all the time while you drive, you won't hear too much if a difference in the 1200w and the 825w systems. The 380w system was in my 2016 model and it wasn't steller, but it was passable. Low end bass was missing though and it sounded a bit tinny with certain music like club mixes. Heavy metal doesn't fair well on it either. My 1st XF had the 825w system in it and I loved it. The sub had more bass oddly enough than my XFR 1200w system. The sound was rich and even in the absence of surround sound, it brought music to life. The 1209w system has the surround and dolby settings, but on this system I miss being able to set speed sensitive volume like in my older XF. I find by moving the sound to be slightly more bias to the rear of the car, one gets more bass and can appreciate the surround sound a bit better otherwise the front speakers drown the rear out and the experience is somewhat dull. Hope this helps 😉
@@carfanfan I drive 100+ miles sometimes for work. I have my windows closed, music loud, and get lost in the music. The low bass is a must. It sounds like the 380 watt system isn't a option. Do you think the 825 is close enough to the 1200?
Hi Hilton, I came across your page as I am really considering an XFR. Basically narrowed my search down to an XFR or a BMW 650i GC. The Jag wins in pretty much every aspect in my opinion but I am still torn because I haven't ever owned a Jag and also living in JHB I am not sure where to get parts should something fail. I know its a V8 but I've been told they are economical for a 5.0 V8 and very reliable. Claims aren't always the case in reality. In the year you had your XFR how was the consumption?
Hey Shane, it can 12l per 100km if you drive it normally but will go up to 14l/100km if you drive it hard. But that's for one that is tip top mechanically. One thing to make sure of is that the plastic timing chain guides have been replaced if it's older than 2014. They fail after high mileage and that's the end of the car. 2014 to 2015 models were fitted with metal ones. Quite indestructible. Also the super charger clutch can fail which causes a rumbling noise that sounds like a worn idler pulley. It won't cause damage to the engine but just sounds dreadful when it fails. It's easy replaceable with a nylon clutch which is fairly cheap. You can get parts on eBay easily or Amazon. The dealer isn't cheap but I had all my servicing done at the dealer to retain the value of the car and keep my Dotsure warranty in tact. It cost me R500 a month and is worth having the peace of mind. Also be sure tknhave a good look under the car for oil leaks. Have the covers removed and check properly. They can develop valve cover leaks at high mileage and leaks between the gearbox and engine.

@@shanewessels4525 Any time mate. Yes, the Jag is unique and will stand out from the crowd. It also says old money which a BMW won't. BMW V8s from 10 years ago are trouble. They self destruct due to the vanos system failures and the electronics become a nightmare. I wouldn't buy a Jag from 2016 onwards as they were built by TATA and corners were cut. But those designed by Ford are pretty reliable.

Thanks Dan. I had a new XF already and didn't like the feel of it. Something was lost in that car, so I went back to an older XF which is my XFR. If this car looks after me like I do it, I could have it for quite a few more years. Maybe by then I'd be interested in a Jaguar electric or am F-Pace 😉

why do u go to dealer for brake job? Many jobs u list here can be done just to the same quality for half the price. Also you could have used stronger dics and pads from aftermarket ;/
I’ve owned 5 R model jags and ever had to do ANYTHING only oil brakes belts and all filters and a tranny flush….besides that I never even had to do a fuel pump I’m 2 years into my XFR bought it with 87k miles and now it has 105k and it runs perfect all I’ve done is tranny flush oil change and serpentine belt….I beat on it it actually sees 155mph governor every-time I drive it
Unfortunately not. I know eBay and Amazon sell these service parts. You just got make sure they match the OEM part numbers and check with the seller before buying. I've learned over the years, always check and double check before buying because returns are a pain in the butt.

The reason a Jaguar is considered an older person's car is because the cost to get in one when new is prohibitive. Back when these cars were on the showroom floor, in America for me, the sticker price was $85 to 90 thousand dollars. How many 20-year olds can afford that payment?

it sure will. That's what I love about the XF. It was so futuristic when it came out that it still stands the test of time, even if the interior has become a bit dated, the exterior still looks fresh and it still turns heads. Especially when they hear that V8 burbling by.
I'm not sure, but this was a 2011 model - just made the facelift, so its the older V8. I'm pretty sure that engine's timing chain guides would fail at some point in the future as they are the plastic ones. But this was a low mileage car so I didn't have any issues with that yet.

LoL - yes, but considering the total cost of maintenance thus far, it's still been cheaper than the total cost of the other cars I looked at. And heaven only knows what maintenance those cars still would have required. So in all, I still got a bargain basement buy :D

My previous cars have been a 5 series BMW and Mercs, I have long ago accepted that buying such prestige luxury brands is easy, but keeping them running is where the costs pile up. Though mine isn’t an XFR, it does have a nice rumble to it, which I didn’t expect, as well as a decent pick up, with speed piling up much quicker than I expect...maybe sound insulation has come on over the last few decades as I often find I’ve reached a certain speed much faster than I expected hahaha....this big cat will definitely take some getting used to. After watching a few of your previous videos, I’ve ordered those swish cup holder mats, and also a mat from online to cover the entire boot area (don’t want to mess up what is a nice new boot space). Not confident enough to pull door panels apart yet to fix the blue leds to the side panels, but I was wondering whether it was possible to fit ‘angel eyes’ to a 2008 XF? And if so, is it worth it, and is it an easy job?

Congrats on your purchase. The 3.0L has a wonderful burble to it. As for angel eyes, it's too much of a faff to do. Headlights out, bake them in the oven to loosen the sealer, take lenses off, then wire and install the angel eye lights. Your headlights won't be the same again. You could risk warping the lenses or the housing. I'd rather do an LED conversion if you have halogen bulbs. Easy to do and so much brighter at night. 😉

I have a budget which would get me either a 2017, 2 litre diesel turbo R-Sport spec, which would have lower mileage, but not all the creature comforts and features, or an 'S', which would be a year older, higher mileage, but would have a 3 litre, V6 twin turbo engine, and be fully loaded. What do you think? I am torn.
@@mrek2068 Errol, my advice with these type of choices us always go with the fully loaded one. You will kick yourself later for not doing it. I get so many messages from guys who bought a lower spec and then ask me how to ad lane keep assist or blindspot monitoring or cameras or heated seats afterwards. I even had a guy ask how to add parking sensors in the front. It's difficult, nigh impossible to add these canbus features if it wasn't built with them. So get them while you have the chance and have no regrets afterwards. In addition, that V6 is a little beast. You'd be crazy to turn that down. But if fuel economy is the biggest concern and you do a lot of miles, then a diesel is sensible. Personally, the V6 would be my choice. But only you know your needs and ultimately you will have to make the difficult choice my friend 😉. Good luck. And let me know which one you took 😜

@@carfanfan Just test drove the F-Pace 'S', followed by the R-Sport, and it's an easy decision - the S all the way. Far superior with the more powerful engine, and added luxury. The R-Sport felt weedy.

Love this car, except the mudflaps (the ruin the aesthetics of any vehicle imo, but thats just me) I currently have a Lincoln LS which is typical Jag powertrain, now that ive learned the car so well and appreciate the engineering of the Jag engines and overall controls I want another one, and the XFR is topping that list. Do you have any acceleration videos of 0-100 or 0-150+? would love to see that! and to hear that engine to what its made to do.
I plan to do a review video of the car in a month or so. I'm trying book a track with a straight long enough for me to get it to top speed. I might have to find an a small airport that will allow me to do that though. But I plan 0-100 kmh and 0-200 kmh and then top speed. 😉

I love my XF from 2008 . its a 4.2 supercharged sv8. I do al Repairs by myself . so brake pads + disk cost me in total just 500 euro. oil + filter cost me 60 euro,s spark plugs 120 euro.s

Thanks Chris. I took a look at Spires but shipping to get it here cost more than the exhaust 🤣. So I will most likely get Powerflow to help me with that. As long as I don't have a drone in the car at highway speeds. My car's RPM idles at around 2,500rpm when doing 140 km/h so droning shouldn't be an issue though. 😜
@@carfanfan ...My XF at 70mph or 112.65kph equates to exactly 2,000rpm. I'll have to see what my RPM is at 87mph.

Hi Hilton. I just bought the bargain of the decade, a 2013 8 speed spotless XFR with 80k km for R 290 000. I know the person and he's VERY kind. Just took it to PowerFlow Bellville and it now literally sounds like the F-Type, the XFR is one incredible amazing car!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Nick! Awesome. I don't know any place in Pretoria who can do my exhaust for me. They all quoted me R40k to do the exhaust. Did you just do a rear muffler delete? Or did they put a semi free flow? by deleting the middle boxes?
@@carfanfan No a full system is really not necessary (1 of the many advantages of the XFR). They only replaced the rear mufflers with a very very small box so that it's a little bit quieter and easier to live with than straight pipe. It only cost R 5000. I will try to tag you on the Jag Facebook group when I post a exhaust vid.

@@Rickbearcat That's a good price Rick. Low mileage too. Mine is one year newer and has 50,000km on the clock, around 35,000 miles. And it still drives like new. So I'm sure that one would too.

Please give me your thoughts on the following: just found a 2015 XF Sport with 57K on the clock. In caviar metallic and ivory interior. Just what I was looking for. Price $18,000 US dollars. A steal right.
One thing. It sat at a dealership for 19 months. Driven ONLY 15 miles over that 19 months (from 8/2015 to 3/2018).
It had 2 owners after that. At 51K miles with the last owner the water pump gasket, intake manifold gasket, and the oil cooler seals were replaced. It now has 57K miles.
I’m going to check it out and test drive it but I’m thinking this car is a maintenance bomb waiting to go off. A jag can’t just sit for 19 months and not be driven. Probably why 36K miles after it sat that long it’s having seal and gasket problems.
Do you agree? The fuel lines, hoses and belts are probably shot. Needless to say the rubber gaskets and seals in the engine and brake lines.

Gratulations: What a bargain. Currently the cheapest XFR 510PS from 2012, 70.000 km from private will cost, without negotiation, 22.000 € here in Germany. If you want something from a dealer, it will be an older model with way more km on it. Or you have to double or even triple the price. Amazing how cheap you got your car. Keep it, love it. The most expenses won´t come back so soon. And as allways. If you buy a car, keep around 5000 € in you back hand to cover unexpected repairs. At least if it is a Jag, BMW oder Mercedes. :) So yes, that´s eye watering. But it is for a really good cause.
Random Question Hilton , would you ever consider going over to the Dark side and getting a Range Rover maybe a Sport or a FFRR or a Discovery ?
I really fancied same model as your current XFR . In the end I went with an end of run fully loaded L320 Luxury RRSport . Which I totally love . I have never regretted it . 12mnths later I still get that initial thrill from it . I love the brand as a whole . This car is my first foray into JLR . It will definitely not be the last . I very nearly XF'd but the driving experience of a family members RRSport sealed the deal . Great as always Hilton keep them coming .... :)
Yes I would. I love the RR Sport. Gorgeous to look at and man that plush ride. Our roads are getting worse so my next car would probably be an Evoque or RR Sport. 😉

I'm still in my 2019 MAZDA CX-5 GT Reserve 2.5 L. turbo, AWD. A K&N drop-in air filter, a new, stiffer Cork Sport turbo downpipe and a CS oil catch can are all the performance upgrades I'll do. The Cork Sport down pipe definitely gave me better throttle response from take off and at lower speeds. As I told you before, using 1/4 tank of 100 octane gas and 3/4 tank 91 octane "premium" gas I get MUSH improved acceleration.
Later I will put some wider 235 Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on it late in 2022.
As per your CX-5 videos on trim upgrades to this car I was very pleased with the good quality of the Ali Express-sourced Chinese parts.
Hey Eric. Yeah, most of the accessories are very good quality. Just be sure to read the description on chrome moldings though, some are metal and some are plastic. Don't waste your time on plastic as they arrive broken. The only other thing I didn't like was the poor design of their wood trim for behind the arm rest for rear passengers. It doesn't fit - so huge waste of time and money on that. They aren't cheap either. I really enjoyed my CX-5 and in the year I owned it, not one thing went wrong. Very reliable. Mine was not turbo, so under powered for where we moved to, otherwise I'd still have it if we lived on the coast.
Sounds like a bargain bud how ever you look at it , and what a beautiful car you have. Mines a 2008 in for paint and wheels sorted and a Jaguar rear lip spoiler fitted in the metallic British racing green to match the car body colour May 10 th at a cost of £1800 I can’t wait to see her 100 percent again the old girl is worth every penny 👌👍

An interesting update Hilton. Great to get all the major work is done. The next 12 months should be much less expensive. So far my modest Tucson 1.6 has proved cheap to run, although the mileage for the past year has been pitifully low (due to lockdowns which will end soon). The second annual service at a dealer cost £250, about 5000 rand / $350. The next service is due in September. I too have been intermittently buying premium fuel, as I was advised that all cars benefit over the longer term. Happy motoring in the XFR :-)
Thanks Andy. Yep, your Tucson service is about what a standard service costs for my XFR. The Tucson is much more financially economical to run though. Overall service costs are low in them and they are great reliable SUVs. I mentioned before I was thinking if buying one but bought the Mazda instead. But I wished afterwards I'd gotten the Tucson. Mostly because it had better spec and tech. Especially Android Auto. Have an aw6 weekend. 😉

It's a direct injection engine, is it not? If so, fuel doesn't even touch any carbon buildup.

Hi Hilton, Do you know if the facelifts have electric steering, rather than hydraulic? I was given a facelift courtesy car, and the steering is way lighting than on my original XF. This is welcome but it doesn't seem as planted as the steering on my original XF. In other words, it wanders a bit on straights. Thanks,
Hey David, all X250 XF have hydraulic steering ie. 2007-2015. And all X260 have electric steering, 2015 - present. 😉

Great video thank you! I'm also in Johannesburg and currently researching the XFR to buy as a second car mainly for my wife to use. She does less than 10 000 km a year, so a 100k km vehicle wouldn't be a huge issue. I must say cost of maintenance is quite high, but if you want to drive one of these I guess it comes with the territory. You never mentioned how much it cost to change the rear shock absorbers, or whether if it was done - unless I missed that somehow in this or a previous video. Have you ever researched or thought of taking the car to an independent Jaguar specialist? I find that indies in general do exceptional work, and are also quite a bit cheaper when it comes to service. Of course the discount you received from Jaguar would keep you with them, but I was just wondering. Thanks for all the detail in explaining the expenses.
Hey Sigurd - the XFR is an excellent choice. If I'd bought one that had all its major services, it wouldn't actually have cost that much in maintenance. I'm surprised by this car's reliability - no leaks of any sort. I would have expected water pump failure by now, but it just keeps going. As for the shocks, I didn't replace them as Jaguar said there was nothing wrong with them and what I thought was leaks was just sweat coming from the shocks - they are electronic adjustable shocks, so they get harder the faster you drive. At 180kph this car really comes into its own. Everything just smooths out and it cruises quietly along at that speed. The shocks just for info would have cost me R15,000 a piece. So replacing all 4 would come to R60k. I have a mechanical warranty on mine with Hollard which costs R450 per month and covers everything. It's their top of the range warranty so the cost of cover you get for various components is worth having the warranty. Even the supercharger is covered. But to have it, I must service it at a Franchised Jaguar dealer and it must have full service history which I've now gotten up to date. Just a warning, the wheels are big, the tires have a low profile and the smallest pothole will buckle those big wheels. I've repaired mine twice already and about to have them repaired again after hitting a pothole while purchasing some spare wheels to keep for when this happens again. You can only fit 20 inch wheels to it because the front calipers are so big, anything smaller won't fit. Wheels have become the bane of my existence. Other than that, you get a good V8 which is reliable as long as the one you buy has already had it's major 8 year service. If not, negotiate the price down by that cost because you will end up spending that money. I got R100k off the price of mine and I've spent almost that on wheels, brakes, services etc so far. So I'm not really out of pocket as the going price of these cars is around R400k for a 2012 and up model. But I personally wouldn't pay a cent more than R330k for one if it hasn't had the big services. Check the service history, call the dealer where it was serviced and ask for any other issues they reported to the previous owner that needed attention. Also check the warranty history to see if anything major failed during it's 5 year plan. ;)
Have a question since you've had so many Jags. How much difference is the Bowers and Wilkins 1200 watt system vs the Meridian 380 watt or 825 watt surround sound system? Thinking of trading in my 2012 XF for a 2016 F Pace S. But damn do I love my sound system in the XF.
Unless you okay your music at too volume all the time while you drive, you won't hear too much if a difference in the 1200w and the 825w systems. The 380w system was in my 2016 model and it wasn't steller, but it was passable. Low end bass was missing though and it sounded a bit tinny with certain music like club mixes. Heavy metal doesn't fair well on it either. My 1st XF had the 825w system in it and I loved it. The sub had more bass oddly enough than my XFR 1200w system. The sound was rich and even in the absence of surround sound, it brought music to life. The 1209w system has the surround and dolby settings, but on this system I miss being able to set speed sensitive volume like in my older XF. I find by moving the sound to be slightly more bias to the rear of the car, one gets more bass and can appreciate the surround sound a bit better otherwise the front speakers drown the rear out and the experience is somewhat dull. Hope this helps 😉
@@carfanfan I drive 100+ miles sometimes for work. I have my windows closed, music loud, and get lost in the music. The low bass is a must. It sounds like the 380 watt system isn't a option. Do you think the 825 is close enough to the 1200?

I came across your page as I am really considering an XFR. Basically narrowed my search down to an XFR or a BMW 650i GC.
The Jag wins in pretty much every aspect in my opinion but I am still torn because I haven't ever owned a Jag and also living in JHB I am not sure where to get parts should something fail.
I know its a V8 but I've been told they are economical for a 5.0 V8 and very reliable. Claims aren't always the case in reality.
In the year you had your XFR how was the consumption?
Hey Shane, it can 12l per 100km if you drive it normally but will go up to 14l/100km if you drive it hard. But that's for one that is tip top mechanically. One thing to make sure of is that the plastic timing chain guides have been replaced if it's older than 2014. They fail after high mileage and that's the end of the car. 2014 to 2015 models were fitted with metal ones. Quite indestructible. Also the super charger clutch can fail which causes a rumbling noise that sounds like a worn idler pulley. It won't cause damage to the engine but just sounds dreadful when it fails. It's easy replaceable with a nylon clutch which is fairly cheap. You can get parts on eBay easily or Amazon. The dealer isn't cheap but I had all my servicing done at the dealer to retain the value of the car and keep my Dotsure warranty in tact. It cost me R500 a month and is worth having the peace of mind. Also be sure tknhave a good look under the car for oil leaks. Have the covers removed and check properly. They can develop valve cover leaks at high mileage and leaks between the gearbox and engine.

@@shanewessels4525 Any time mate. Yes, the Jag is unique and will stand out from the crowd. It also says old money which a BMW won't. BMW V8s from 10 years ago are trouble. They self destruct due to the vanos system failures and the electronics become a nightmare. I wouldn't buy a Jag from 2016 onwards as they were built by TATA and corners were cut. But those designed by Ford are pretty reliable.

Thanks Dan. I had a new XF already and didn't like the feel of it. Something was lost in that car, so I went back to an older XF which is my XFR. If this car looks after me like I do it, I could have it for quite a few more years. Maybe by then I'd be interested in a Jaguar electric or am F-Pace 😉

That's not bad. A major service costs £350 for my car and it's just a Passat. That's main dealer prices though.
I’ve owned 5 R model jags and ever had to do ANYTHING only oil brakes belts and all filters and a tranny flush….besides that I never even had to do a fuel pump
I’m 2 years into my XFR bought it with 87k miles and now it has 105k and it runs perfect all I’ve done is tranny flush oil change and serpentine belt….I beat on it it actually sees 155mph governor every-time I drive it
On mine the governor had been disabled. I got it up to 290km/h

Unfortunately not. I know eBay and Amazon sell these service parts. You just got make sure they match the OEM part numbers and check with the seller before buying. I've learned over the years, always check and double check before buying because returns are a pain in the butt.

The reason a Jaguar is considered an older person's car is because the cost to get in one when new is prohibitive. Back when these cars were on the showroom floor, in America for me, the sticker price was $85 to 90 thousand dollars. How many 20-year olds can afford that payment?

it sure will. That's what I love about the XF. It was so futuristic when it came out that it still stands the test of time, even if the interior has become a bit dated, the exterior still looks fresh and it still turns heads. Especially when they hear that V8 burbling by.

I'm not sure, but this was a 2011 model - just made the facelift, so its the older V8. I'm pretty sure that engine's timing chain guides would fail at some point in the future as they are the plastic ones. But this was a low mileage car so I didn't have any issues with that yet.

LoL - yes, but considering the total cost of maintenance thus far, it's still been cheaper than the total cost of the other cars I looked at. And heaven only knows what maintenance those cars still would have required. So in all, I still got a bargain basement buy :D
