25 Things I WISH I Knew Before Buying a Tesla Model Y - Pros & Cons of 2022 Tesla

  • I just bought a new 2022 Tesla Model Y & here's everything I wish I knew (good and bad) BEFORE I bought it.
    I know there are a LOT of Tesla lovers out there who worship their Tesla's, and if that's you please be kind in the comments if you don't disagree with me. I am definitely NO car expert, but I did want to share my initial thoughts, concerns, and feelings after making such a major purchase. I do have to say, I do love a lot of things about my new Tesla Model Y and I chime in on all of those in this video. I do think, however, there are a few drawbacks that I wasn't quite prepared for. Before you buy a new Tesla (even if it's NOT the model Y) I think you should watch this first. I weigh in on Tesla's Phantom Braking issues, the paint problems, and all of the best Tesla Model Y Accessories.
    UPDATE ON THIS VIDEO: I did finally order the Tesla Key Fob and connected it to my Tesla today and OH MY GOODNESS IT'S A GAME CHANGER! I don't know why this key isn't already included in the price, but it has been working so great so far!

    I loved this video. Great to hear a pro and con list from someone who actually owns and uses the car often vs a car guru who drove it for a limited amount of time. Also, I was surprised to find that at least one of your cons (driving like a car) would be a pro for me. I like feeling lower in my vehicles, gives me a better sense of control.

    Loved hearing what you think! I agree with a lot of your points. I have a ton of non Tesla accessories and I agree with your safety concerns 100% and I’m hoping they’re going to address the connectivity issues because I did not used to have these issues 🙄
    And omg the regenerative breaking was so weird at first but now I LOVE it! Tesla insurance saved me $40 compared to State Farm in IL
    Again - this was a good and accurate review and I still love my car so so much!

    • @ErinRobinson

      Do you have connectivity issues with your phone at all??

    • @frankeggers4024
      @frankeggers4024 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had no trouble adjusting to the regenerative braking. It took very little experience for me to be able to control it by exactly how far I release the accelerator. I find that very helpful.
      Although there are many things that I like about the car, I do not like the touch screen. I see it as simply a money saving device for the manufacturer because it is probably far cheaper to have a touch screen than to have individual controls. There are many things on the touch screen that I cannot read while wearing my distance glasses which I need for driving. Probably people who are not much over 40 years old would not find that to be a problem. However, it could be corrected if Tesla simply used a bigger type size on the screen. But even then, there is something to be said for being able to reach and the cabin temperature and air flow controls without looking at them. In theory one can use the voice controls, but they require too much memorization and do not always work as intended.
      When I lived in San Diego, the built-in GPS got me onto a dead end street and would not help me get off of it. It would not get me home either; it had me drive right past the street on which I lived. Here in Palm Springs it tells me that I am approaching my home but does not direct me to turn onto the street where I live. That's why I use my Garmin GPS.
      Since one of the software updates, the odometer controls have been moved to the right side of the screen where I cannot read them. They also deleted the tenths of miles. I have owned a number of cars, but this is the first where the odometer does not display tenths.
      I am considering having the front part of the glass roof covered with white vinyl. Here in the desert the glass roof allows too much of the sun's heat to reach one's head.
      Many of the problems could be very easily fixed with a software update, but Tesla doesn't seem to care. It could not take much effort to increase the type size of some of the displays and others have also complained about the small type size.

    • @frankeggers4024
      @frankeggers4024 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I found the regenerative braking easy to adapt to; it took me less than an hour. Probably that was because 95% of my driving was with manual transmissions. With them I used a lower gear to slow down thus reducing brake wear. Because I used heal - tow double clutching to downshift, that did not cause extra wear to the gearbox or clutch.

  • @hphillips7425
    @hphillips7425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I appreciate your detailed review. most tesla owners sugar coat everything and skip over the negatives. I test drove a model y and my F250 4x4 has smoother ride. The regen is easier to get used to when you have more experience driving a manual transmission

      Jesus! That's terrible.

    • @frankeggers4024
      @frankeggers4024 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Regarding the regenerative braking, quite so. Until I got my Tesla, 95% of my driving was with manual transmissions. In a car with a fuel burning engine, I think that a manual transmission makes more sense than an automatic transmission except for people who have a disability which makes shifting gears difficult or impossible.

    One of the best ways to describe how the GO/STOP pedal feels is if you've ever used a battery powered drill. The faster you squeeze the trigger the faster it spins and the faster you release the trigger the faster it stops spinning.

    I owned a Tesla Model X from 2016-2021, the best car in 40 years, no issues, no range anxiety, no charging in the cold problems, the Falcon Doors worked flawless. The Tesla X saved my life going 65 mph in Kansas City on 435 south loop. A very large Church like chair fell from the back of a truck. I did not have time to respond but guess what, the car steered left to avoid the chair crashing into my windshield and likely severely injuring me or worse. Then steered back into the original lane to avoid a car to my left rear blind spot. There no amount of features better than collision avoidance. For Tesla its routine to help its drivers, its built into the design of this EV

    It's a great video! And I watch lots and lots of them to learn all that I can about my new car. I love the honesty you portray. And you come across as real, genuine. Well done. I love that way. Keep up the good work. Too many videos out there seem to be selling some position or product. And way too many videos have too much "fluff", music, intros, sales pitches, and more time wasting nonsense. I actually have a longer list of complaints than you put in this video. But I picked up my 2022 M3P a month ago. In spite of my complaints, and some are very serious issues, I just love the car! The Model 3 Performance is just amazing! I gave a ride to a couple yesterday and we all concluded it's not a car, it's just crazy amazing, off the charts, much better than any performance car any of us ever owned or rode in. The car's balance, stance, weight distribution, traction, overall behavior in turns / curves, speed, "transporter" acceleration, all stupendous! It is fairly quiet, although it could be a little more so. I don't have too loud AC fan that I noticed. It's really quite a different car from the Y. On the seats, they seam very comfy but I have a large frame, over 6' and large bony hips. The seats are just too narrow in the seat. I had to get pillows and plan to modify them. The head rest is absurdly too far forward that it hurt my entire body. I found a video on it and I ended up successfully modifying it to a more comfy position. The Phantom Braking is my biggest complaint! That is a horrible excuse for autopilot capability. Followed by the random alarms. Followed by the tiny print that disappears when the alarms go off. These real issues can be maddening. Thank you

      i test drove a model y that had FSD installed and enabled and I tried it out and oh my GOD is the random breaking terrifying. it only did it once, but once on a 20 minute test drive of which i did maybe 10 minutes of FSD??? it took the freeway offramp way too fast for my liking, cut off another car, and then slammed on the breaks. i felt so bad for the other driver and i immediately took over after that happened. maybe they shouldn't allow FSD on test drive cars....but I'm glad I got to try it because I immediately had my SA remove it from my order. hopefully normal autopilot is better but who knows :(

    You make such great points in this video! I've had my Model 3 since early 2021 and I've experienced a lot of what you covered. The Tesla app on my phone used to take sooo long to connect to the car. I would see the forever loading screen and be unable to unlock my car or open the trunk, etc. I think they've made improvements to the app recently because it's connecting quicker than before now thankfully! I've also experienced the phantom breaking on the highway. Once we were driving on autopilot about 70 MPH and the car suddenly decreased to 35 MPH! This was so scary and dangerous. I wasn't sure if it was due to the construction zones around, or if the car was confused which roadway we were on because there was an road underneath the overpass we were traveling on. Either way, changing the speed on the highway like that is so scary that I just took over and drove myself the rest of the way.

    • @ErinRobinson
      @ErinRobinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nikki! I am jealous...I really wanted the model 3. It's so fun to drive. The thing that I wonder with the connectivity is, do you need to have a newer phone in order to connect more efficiently? My phone is old, and I refuse to get a new one until it breaks, but it made me wonder if that had something to do with it.

I have a newer iPhone though so maybe you're on to something there. I was waiting around 3-5 minutes for the app to even respond before and now it's in less than 20 seconds I can connect. One of my new favorite features is the ability to see live footage through Sentry Mode when it's on. But Sentry Mode is a battery killer if it's left on for a long time.

If my 2018 Rogue does this, and my new tesla is going to do this, wth. I haven’t looked through all the comments so this might have been noted as a Con: Tesla 3 and Y have the most arcane and difficult way to change your cabin air filter. It involves removing dash panels and standing on your head to reach a tiny fastener with a special tool. And you will have to replace the air filter after about two years. Or you can pay Tesla to but on other cars it’s not a gymnastic event.

    I've observed that the phantom breaking happens most commonly where there is construction on a freeway exit to a city street where the speed limit is significantly lower. Example 70mph highway goes over a 35 mph road and there is some kind of expansion or construction on the highway sometimes the car will "grab" the lower speed limit and slam on the breaks when it is going over the bridge. Not fun but it happens on I-4 going through downtown Orlando all the time.

    • @frankeggers4024
      @frankeggers4024 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can also occur if the car ahead is slowing down to make a right turn and you are rapidly gaining on it. Another situation which causes it is when a car on a cross street is slowing down for a stop sign and the Tesla does not realize that it is stopping. It's good to be cautious under those circumstances, but the Tesla cruise control panics too easily.

    It was an interesting video with much truth to it. I have a 2020 Tesla model 3.
    Regarding phantom braking, I too have experienced it when using the adaptive cruise control. I have learned when to expect it and, when it occurs, I hit the accelerator quickly to stop it thereby eliminating the possibility of being hit from behind. That is a problem which could be very difficult to correct. We drivers can THINK and often make better decisions than the driving computer.
    Regarding speed limit sensing in cruise control, that SOMETIMES works very well. However, it thinks that the speed limit past my house is 45 mph whereas it is only 25 mph. There is no speed limit sign for the car to read but it is clear that the limit is 25 mph in most residential areas. Also, I can control the speed much more smoothly than the cruise control can. I can anticipate the need to slow down but the cruise control waits until much too late to slow down. Even so, the cruise control is useful when there is very little traffic.
    I much prefer my Garmin GPS to the Tesla navigation / GPS system. In San Diego the Tesla navigation system took me onto a dead end street and could not direct me off of it. Both here in Palm Springs CA and in San Diego, the Tesla navigation system took me right past the street on which I lived whereas the Garmin had me turn onto it and took me directly to my house. The Tesla navigation tells me to turn left after it is already too late to get into the left turn lane; the Garmin GPS gives me plenty of time to get into the left lane.
    While driving I naturally wear my distance glasses, but the touch screen is too close for me to read the small print thereon. Others have also complained about the problem. It could easily be fixed by increasing the type size, but Tesla apparently doesn't much care.
    I strongly suspect that touch screens in cars will be a passing fad like the wrap around windshields which made their debut in 1953 on the Cadillac El Dorado, became almost universal in 1955, but were gone by the early 1960s. The real reason for touch screens is that they cost the manufacturer less than individual controls which do not require taking one's eyes off of the road to operate. There are voice controls but having to memorize a whole slew of them takes time. Moreover, there is no printed manual with a list of them. Also, some are not understood. For example, when I intone "fold mirrors" it thinks that I am saying "old mirrors"; I cannot get it to understand the "F" sound. Fortunately "close mirrors" works as I determined from experimentation. If it does not understand a command it states so on the touch screen. It would be more helpful if, in addition, it instantly voiced "Command not understood".
    I am seriously considering having the glass roof covered with white vinyl to match the rest of my car, leaving only enough uncovered to permit using the inside rear view mirror. Here in the desert the glass roof becomes very hot forcing me to wear a hat to avoid the resulting considerable discomfort.
    In many respects I really like my Tesla model 3. However, there are some things about it which are a continual source of frustration. Most are related to the touch screen controls.

    13:07 I'm glad you touched on this. I drove a Model Y the other day for the first time, and my main takeaway (other than "holy sh!t the torque is instant") was that it's not a luxury vehicle, but a modern one. I still plan to own one in the (hopefully) near future, but people should be aware that the interior quality isn't amazing, but rather simplistic with a focus on the tech inside. At least that's how I feel!

    This was good information. I do think however for that amount of money a car should not have these issues. I also heard living in colder climates can also affect battery life….

      Yeah, I think the colder climate issue is a major issue for all electric vehicles. I think batteries don't work in freezing climates.

      It’s true! The battery has to stay warm so it uses a little juice 😅 I keep mine plugged in so it’s a wash on those colder nights (I live close to Chicago)

      What about in a hot climate? I live in Tucson, AZ (moved from the Seattle area 16 yrs ago) & have found that this climate is rough on batteries & tires. I have a 2017 Subaru Forester & replaced the battery at about the 4 year mark & am thinking I'll be replacing the tires soon, not because I have a lot of miles on them, but because after a few years of high heat, I don't quite trust them, even though the car has always been garaged. I think I got spoiled in WA, with things lasting longer on my cars.

      @@aubnwa01 hot climate is fine, at battery level. In cold climates it required more time to charge and has less range because the liquid in the battery doesn't flow as well if cold.
      The battery is safe, it's just underperforming.
      I live in the Alps and it's just a bit annoying to have less potential range "if something happens" - but that something hasn't happened yet and I have enough juice in my frozen battery to do what I have to do.

    The busy charger isn't a problem in Europe: Teslas here have the 'universal' European plug, so every charger of every grid works. No adaptors, no gimmicky - not as fast and not plug-an-charge, but in a pinch...

    Driving an EV is fantastic. One pedal do it all. If you push down, it goes and it goes and it goes, constant acceleration as aggressive as you want.
    Lift the foot, and you decelerate. You need the actual brake just to "almost stopped" to "dead stop".
    I have a (cheap) Electric vehicle from 2018, and my mechanic said my brake pads are basically new.

    Regarding the app connectivity issue & it not unlocking you car: I have a model 3 and had that happen a few times when I first got mine at the end of last year, but I looked it up and what you’re supposed to do in that situation is turn your Bluetooth on your phone off wait like a second and turn it back on and then it should work. Also I don’t know why, but your never supposed to manually close the app on your phone. That causes connectivity issues too. I hope that helps a little bit
