I’m so glad you have mentioned that male italian greyhounds almost always pee on their chests. Because I have one and I wasn’t sure, if it is normal or if my italian greyhound is just „special”. So thank you for sharing this information.
My 1,5 year old male iggy pees on his front legs ALL THE TIME, in the winter we have to wash his clothes every week but the solution to that is owning more cute iggy clothes:)
I had to give up my male IG to rescue. He kept marking everything in the house: sofas, beds, chairs, etc. Very affectionate and loving, but couldn't deal with it anymore.
I’m terribly sorry to hear this, but know you made the best decision for yourself. I’ve had 3 male rescues, still have 1 female. Potty habits are something MOST discussed in italian greyhound behaviors, except being Velcro dogs! I wish I knew where you were because rescues are few and far between in most areas (I’m in SoCal) and I would snap him up! I now have my 2nd companion male chihuahua and his little 4.5lb body pees and marks as alpha behavior to our 12yrold female iggie. Lots of carpet cleaning, even our bedding, many surprises after 2 years but I do the best I can. We can’t image rehoming any of them, tho I don’t judge you for doing so. Now you know better about the breed and will find the pup that suits your lifestyle and temperament. Don’t give up, just look at other options, perhaps! Please let me know he found a great home🥰
I’ve had male and females and I prefer males. It had been 23 years since my last Iggy and my husband wanted to “surprise” me with one for my 40th birthday (pets should never be a surprise so we discussed it first but it was his gift idea) I knew without a doubt I wanted a male. My crazy boy doesn’t pee on his chest but he always pees on his front legs and sometimes if he’s looking down he pees on his face too 😂 and doesn’t seem to care either!

Yesterday I had to put my dog (Italian Greyhound) down of 14 years, 3 months old and I am grieving, it is being very difficult time for me. I'm not ready to have another dog yet and I don't know if I want one but if I do I'm considering getting one again when the time is right. It is a wonderful breed.

We had both male & female Ita Grey, at the same time. Some of your observations match ours & others not. The male was the most affectionate absolutely! The female liked to do things on her own, but she slowly became more cuddly in older age. Oddly its our female who humps! Shes terrible for doing it to people, not other dogs. The male never did this in public, but he did hump a certain cushion & run away embarrassed when you caught him - LOL. He didn't pee his chest though, that's an odd one!. But he was a bad aim & would often get his foot. Id add that both ours were excellent at learning tricks, high five, roll over, bang bang, dance, stand, shake a paw. They seemed to learn very quickly, the female watched the male & did several of them with no training! She doesn't even need a treat, she loves doing tricks for fun. She is highly intelligent, she can watch TV & even play games on iPad. Both were really well behaved, generally, but the male did get defensive of being made to move from a comfy spot, which was his only bad habit. It sounds crazy, but I truly believe our male, Kubo (who sadly is no longer with us) understood everything we were saying. Its the closest bond I've ever had with an animal, we did everything together & we sensed everything about each other. I had whippets also in the past & they are very similar in that they love being your best friend.
Same here. Never even heard of peeing on their chests. None of my greyhounds did that. But wait, she plays on your ipad?😮 I need to see that... amazing!

I always like watching your adorable Nello. My female (7 y/o rescue) has yet to get over her shyness. One day, I hope to have her sit on my lap and cuddle. Maybe I should show her Nello's videos to see how it's done!
My female iggy clings to me 24/7 and I don't have to worry about her peeing on her chest or all over the place. She goes only in one spot, whether that's outside or on a pee pad inside.
Hi! I’m from Mexico and I just came across your channel a couple of weeks ago. I loved all your videos. Everything is absolutely try. My iggy is 2 and a half years old. I own a 4 year old whippet as well. Iggies are not common in Mexico and Latte (my iggy) gets a lot of attention on the street. Many people have reached out to me to ask where they can get an Italian greyhound and my first reaction is to tell them to really think about it because they require a lot of attention and it’s not like other breeds at all. Your video really reflects that. If you are ever in Mexico we would love to meet you and Nello for a play date!
Thank you for your nice comment! And yes, I've heard about grass allergies too, it often happens when they are imported. If we ever do come to Mexico, I will let you know :)
I had a female Italian Greyhound for 17 years and she was not clingy at all. She could be aloof as she got older but liked everyone. They can be tricky to house train though. Great dogs.
I guess one key point to consider is the size. Male tends to be significantly bigger within the small dog category. I have a 6 month "beast" of 40 cm and 5kg. I am always surprise to see how some females can be much smaller and thinner.
Surprisingly, that's not always the case. Size is not necessarily related to their gender. I've met both female and male tiny iggies of 3kg and big ones of 8kg or more
I had two males, one very clingy and affectionate the other one not so much. Both super sweet. One peed like a girl the other lifted his leg. Both were Indoor potty trained on wee wee pads, never an issue with peeing on chest. One liked to wear clothes the other didn't.
I have a male greyhound (not iggy) & have often thought of getting an iggy. My greyhound is fine with my parents’ papillons, but he does growl a little if dogs get over excited “in his face”. He also destroys his toys.
We have 2 boys 1 and 3 years old, although we had others in the past, I agree that the males are super affectionate, having 2 greatly helps their anxiety when they are left alone. For a short period we had only 1 because of the death of our old boy. The 3 year old wouldn’t sleep by himself in the kitchen. Now with 2 again he’s not interested at sleeping any where else. So 2 are much better than 1, in our experience. Thank you for your information.
I have a whippet and have always loved IG's. They seem to multiply all that I love about my Zippee times 4 or maybe 5! So adorable. I'm not going to let Zippee read this! 😉
We have had 3 Italian greyhounds over the years, all male. Only one pee’d on his chest and still does at 17 months old. I’ll only have male dogs, more affectionate, I find easier going. All 3 have been velcro to us.
I lived with a male IG for years. He was fun to play with and was SUPER sweet and cuddly. He was also just funny all the time. Loved him. Only sweeter dog I’ve known is the the current male Pomeranian I have. I think he is unusual though.
You answered my question quickly. I've had mostly cats, but hope to adopt an IG in a year or two. Love Helio! 💖 Is that brindle Greyhound yours? I love any brindle doggo!
My boy just passed. I'm having a great deal sadness, after 11 years he's been my constant companion. Yes he was notably attached I used to say, lol. He had extream seperation anxiety. He was as affectionate as he could be having 4 yrs of a bad life before I got him. He was pee pad trained. His biggest problem is he wasn't just a jumper he never stopped. It was difficult around other dogs. Poor little guy, I'm positive it was a dominance thing. Well, that's it. I hope to adopt another male. 👍
My iggy is male and 1 year old now. I must be extra lucky because I haven’t experienced him peeing on his chest. Since he a was a puppy, I’ve trained him to use a pad indoors because I live in a hi rise plus a cold climate during the winter. He’s quite good about using the pad… 95% of the time he uses it and I love him for it. He pees standing or semi squat. Sometimes he will get pee on the front leg, and if that’s the case I can just use a wet wipe on him. But I also noticed he will try to clean himself too. He’s such a clean pup! Of course I also take him out as much as I can. He prefers to go outside and that’s when he lifts his leg, usually on a tree. The weird thing is that he very rarely poops outside. He prefers to go on his puppy pad which is in a more private place inside the house. Does anyone else have an iggy like this?

The males being more "cuddly" than females thing is true of all dogs--not just Italian greyhounds. I have had many different kinds of dogs in my life and this has been true probably 80% of the time and I have heard the same thing from other dog owners. But, yes, this is a generality only. There are always exceptions. Nothing is 100% when it comes to dog personalities.
I have no idea where this "males are more clingly or cuddly" thing comes from. I think it's just a thing that's been repeated. I choose not to have males b/c of the marking issue (if you own an IG, you want a late spay or neuter for bone density purposes - the hormones are good for their bones, and IGs are so prone to breaks - so males will go through puberty and mark everywhere). If my female IG got any more clingy or cuddly, I'd have to sew her on as a fifth appendage lol. I go to pee and she sits outside the door, whining forlornly, until I come out. She has to be ON TOP OF ME at all times. Velcro dog isn't even the term; she's a gorilla glue dog lol.
Well I was reminded because after our previous video many iggy owners, mostly those with females, told me that their iggy isn’t clingy at all. So generally speaking, it is true but that doesn’t mean there are no females who aren’t clingy. Of course there are as there‘s always exceptions to a rule 😊 on the other hand marking isn’t necessarily an issue for all males either 😉
@@GiuaSuki you'll want to let her get her first heat, then wait 3 to 4 months post-heat to do the spay. That's when she'll get those hormomes that are good for her bone density. Be prepared, Iggies notorioulsy have late first heats. My Sophie didn't have her first heat until 15 months, so she wasn't spayed until she was 19-months-old. My vet is super sighthound-knowledgable, and insisted we wait, though. And I'm glad I did for a multitude of reasons.
Hi I’m a staffy man my self iv had both male and female the females was more protective then male males would protect but females defo other a male dog any time
I've only had female Italian Greyhounds, a pair at a time since 1990, and all six have been the sweetest, cuddliest girls ever. I had a male Dachshund before that and will never get a male dog again. They are too messy and embarrassing.
My sister's female was strange in that she had in the household another dog of a different species and she would often go out of her way to sit next to him. BUT when it came time to sleep she would growl and mean it ==go away this bed is MINE. Otherwise she was devoted to her partner. To me that was inconsistent strange behavior. When she had the zoomies the other dog would try to keep. up----NO WAY so eventually it was a one woman show and I have said THESE dogs LOVE to run. Do you consider Greyhound racing cruel? some think thoroughbred racing cruel for horses. Yes there is whipping going on and sometimes drug enhancers but I think those thoroughbreds want to run. We two leggeds have taken advantage of it for betting purposes. I am guilty of that myself.
I just got a male iggy, in Japan, and named him Freddie. Your videos with Nello helped a lot when I was searching for a dog. Thanks 😊

Please what is the average weight of an adult Italian greyhound?
They vary like all breeds anywhere from 8 -14 pounds is average. I have a 16 year old female thats 12 pounds. Taller than some but sturdy.
My little girl is 17 she’s a total lovebug named Nina
Are both genders evenly prone to dental and heart issues?
Do male Whippets also pee on their abdomen?
I had a male whippet that lived to 17. As he got old he had a hard time lifting his leg and would squat and pee on the back of his front legs.
You can't go wrong with either.
Oh the peeing I was like only reason I want a female ahaha. So many clothes I washing and lots of rags to washed as well
I have no idea where this "males are more clingly or cuddly" thing comes from.
When should i get a spay for my female iggy? I have one sceaduled for 6 months should i wait / when should i sceadule?
@@GiuaSuki you'll want to let her get her first heat, then wait 3 to 4 months post-heat to do the spay. That's when she'll get those hormomes that are good for her bone density. Be prepared, Iggies notorioulsy have late first heats. My Sophie didn't have her first heat until 15 months, so she wasn't spayed until she was 19-months-old. My vet is super sighthound-knowledgable, and insisted we wait, though. And I'm glad I did for a multitude of reasons.
You're very fortunate to have a greyhound savvy vet. Are you in the usa?
Hi I’m a staffy man my self iv had both male and female the females was more protective then male males would protect but females defo other a male dog any time
Thank you I thought it was just my boy dog LOL
I've only had female Italian Greyhounds, a pair at a time since 1990, and all six have been the sweetest, cuddliest girls ever. I had a male Dachshund before that and will never get a male dog again. They are too messy and embarrassing.
I prefer an iggy boy. The one and only man in my life😜
🤪🤪🤪
Man I miss my blue male IG... he was the best dog in the world; no offense to Nello.
I have little male iggy
And omg he’s just the best
He’s quiet
Cuddly
A good boy
Then there my other dog…
Who’s the total opposite 🤦♂️
I have a female she is very cuddly.
There are a few exceptions of course 😊
Yes! Peeing the chest!! Arrrgh.
not true, my boys love me sleep with me and give me hugs and kises to me all male they dont favor my wife at all
Well just like I said, there are a few exceptions always 😜
Will you marry me?
Jungs sind cooler
Applies to all dog breeds
